Welcome to the club I’ve been into bfs for nearly 10yrs it’s good to see the gear a bit more accessible here in Australia now. When I started it was all expensive imports from Japan
Really enjoyed this, Steve, not so much for the bfs, but your constant casting, perseverance and narration of bream and snags, had my mind wandering to the Scamander River and many countless hours spent fishing for southern black bream. Very therapeutic viewing!
So interesting to watch the strategies employed to solve the problems he encounters, including testing the limits by casting into the wind. It's apparent the rod and rell need to be tuned for the style... but tyhere's nothing new there. Good stuff Starlo, taking us on a journey to expand your horizons and explain your approach.
That was so enjoyable to watch, mate for having a heavier rod, you fished that like a boss. I was watching waiting for a strike. finally 😀😀. Really looking forward to you fishing lighter rod, will def let you launch those lures. Looking forward to the next installment of BFS
I remember an old Modern fishing magazine had an article by Micah Adams. It was about this stye of bream fishing. He fished where the fresh met at estuary in rapids and waterfalls.
Great vid mate! You should have had a go at the rocks behind you where you filmed your "outro" - I've had alot of luck on those, especially on topwater ;)
Hi, Great video, Thank you for continuing your journey, Use the BFS with the Ligun66f for topwater bream and whiting. Its so much fun especially if a random flathead takes you on. Oh Cicada bream fishing is also fun on BFS.
I love the concept of this new fishing but I have the nice ultra light spinning gear and I couldn’t think of anything worse then birds nests during a hot fishing session. It’s gunna test ur patience Starlo 😂
definitely agree distance isnt everything, enjoying and no over runs, backlashes or tangles for me but really enjoy very light baitcaster work. very nice hits waking up that rod tip indeed.
I'm glad you have given the BFS reel another go they're a lot of fun. I'm also checking out your smoked tailor episode I've always heard they aren't good eating which is a shame. One last thing Starlo I have seen huge tailor/bluefish caught in the US but never that size here is it the same species?
Try using your thumb on the reel when casting to control the spin - this will avoid over runs/bird nests etc...a very light touch is all you need...with practice it will come...
AliExpress has LOTS of BFS reels suited to all budgets - even some of the cheaper ones are excellent according to a number of TH-camrs - and they are all available in left hand retrieve.
@@StarloGetsReel I've been fooling around with a few top water lures, trying to get them to go sub surface for a short distance, try changing trebles, split rings, rigging them backwards (Hooks at the normal tow point, that causes them to dive at the start of the movement)etc, had some success with bream hitting as the lure breaks the surface, something else you might like to try is surface soft plastics, I use a worm hook (appropriate for the plastic) and some of the bigger SP's, they are heavy enough to cast on BFS
Hmmm. That throwaway comment shows a distinct lack of knowledge on this subject. Actually, Shimano are lagging well behind in terms of the availability of top flight BFS gear, at least in Australia. Hopefully, that’ll change over time, but at the moment many other brands are well ahead in terms of both their ranges and their sales figures on BFS tackle. Probably not a bad idea to have at least a vague idea of what you’re talking about before sounding off on a public platform. Just sayin’… 😉
There is a new BFS technique on the rise in Japan. BF PE, Bait finesse with heavier lines of #1-#1.5 ratings and rods to suit those line class. More suited for bigger trout and bass but still all about the finesse.
BFS we know what that stands for. Get Abu Garcia made in Sweden with real gears and bearings not Chinese crap. Pay the extra for the reel Deal it will be SH just saying 🐊
@@StarloGetsReel Fact Starlo I have purchased reels made in China and wouldn't spin or retrieve or cast after time to full measure X 3. There is a documentary on the AG about the bait caster I have on You tube check it out. And don't forget my Shimano Quick fire is smaller than you 500.
I have a abu garcia revo 3sl that I was fishing with small lures and minnows on my 1-3kg Berkeley venom sidewinder 7ft single piece long before they came up with bfs 😂 one of my favourites to throw was a cultiva bigeye bait.

Looks like a very sporty fun way to fish.

I can't wait when my bfs rod back from my rod builder after a repair built on a spin blank
Sounds good.

I fished them. They were very quiet.

Ah yes, but anyone who tells you they’ve never had a casting tangle with spin gear is fibbing. 😉
I like the idea of using short fly rods, 7 to 7.6 ft 8 weight
Cool.
How did Saturday arvo went for ya Steve? Was there at the boat shed
Pretty slow. Couple small flatties and a few whiting on the surface: one cracker but the others barely legal or just under.

could try a side arm roll cast
Possibly.
What do you think is the distance in meters you were casting Steve.?
I’d say 15 to 25 metres, maybe 30 with the jig-rigged soft plastic with a bit of wind assistance.
Try using your thumb on the reel when casting to control the spin - this will avoid over runs/bird nests etc...a very light touch is all you need...with practice it will come...

If I was to have a stab in the dark, I reckon Steve’s had a bit of practice with a baitcaster
@ thumbs up. 😉
where would you get a left handed model? Only seems that in australia they stock right handed models.....
Ah, that's slowly changing. Shimano have quite a few left-handed versions now. Their model numbers usually end in a 1 (201, 301, etc).
@@StarloGetsReel unfortunately not in this country with the Shimano SLX BFS Baitcast Fishing Reel ..... ah well. Just have to remaint procrusteanised

So we took a couple of magnets out did we Steve?
Not yet! That'll probably be the next step. But I need a lighter rod first, I reckon. I'm hitting the lower weight limits of this one.
@@StarloGetsReel I think you’ll need to look a bit further than Shimano in this case
Try a surface lure in that shallow
Yep, I often do, but they were very shut down on that day. So I figured surface wouldn't be especially productive. You never know, though...
Zip baits Fakie Dog is amazing into the wind
@@stevegray4012Amazing topwater bream lures. The fakie dog is designed with Japanese black bream in mind
