Agreed. This is great storytelling in any movie. No actual violence was shown, just intent. Make the right suggestions about what could and should happen and the viewer will fill in the blanks.

yes indeed.. he is able to turn a murdering psychopath, into a lovable hero!!! for reference, in this scene, a guy who was desperate enough to risk going to prison, nervously robbed a few bucks, but was later killed by another guy who very confidently went and bashed his brains with a sledge-hammer. only Denzel could sell it as a heroic act!!! deserves an Oscor!!
@@moralityisnotsubjective5 yes, rude, disrespectful, and POTENTIALLY violent... but none of those things makes him deserving of ANOTHER EXTREMELY and ACTUALLY violent person bashing his head with a hammer!!!! also, looking over his shoulder constantly, is a sure clue to his anxiety and nervousness. even his rudeness and impatience is a is a result of the anxiety im not siding with him, but just wondering who was the real criminal here, just based on this scene. a guy who stole or the guy who murdered.
@@adamfirst3772 the only reason he would be nervous or anxious is because he is literally doing a crime and he doesn't want to get caught. That man did this many times before and shot and killed one guy too. You can't tell me there's something actually wrong with him other than he's actual garbage.
While Denzel is of course outstanding, both the writing and the direction deserve a lot of credit. The close shots of every small detail Denzels character takes in (including the kids coming in which prevented a fight right there), the license plates, the photos and the way they don't show us the actual violence but just cut back to the store the next day to show us who the character is. You're right, it's such a crazy leap to assuming the robber was killed by RM. I'm sure, as you said, he just did the poor criminal a good deed and was properly rewarded with...the guy's head bashed to hell. Yeah, I'm just speculating wildly here.
Exactly! What is everyone’s problem? He obviously negotiated a deal with him by helping build something special and give him jewelry in return as a sort of gratitude.
Money is just paper and little discs of metal. But that ring isn't just a ring. It was something that belonged to Jenny's family. What Robert did for her made me tear up. A decent man doing a decent thing for a colleague.
That's what sealed the thugs fate. If you notice as they were clearing the register Robert was concerned, maybe a tad annoyed but he figured he's a punk who has gotta punk, it's only money, the store has insurance etc. He went into kill mode when the thug targeted the ring, a personal possession that means a lot, that's irreplaceable, that when he starts doing his equaliser thing of details etc. 💯 the thug doesn't take the ring, he doesn't get a McCall
He was all smiles, knowing it was only money, until the robber made it personal by demanded her mother's ring. That's when he gets that look in his eye.
You gotta love how the main theme plays whenever Robert finishes taking care of business. In other movies, it would feel overused, but in this it adds so much satisfaction to each scene.

Think of the time and money saved by not shooting that scene, and how unnecessary we all recognize it to be. These writers know what the audience needs to see and what it doesn’t to still give the audience a sense of satisfaction that justice has been served. Brilliant.
Never know. McCall probable gave him a chance to return the money and especially the ring and the robber wasn’t having any of that and underestimated what awaited him

The whole scene was played perfectly we literally did not need to see anything to understand and it was delivered in a terrifying way. Fucking amazing directing and screenwriting.
The entire scene and resolution was a case study in "show, don't tell". The audience understands that he's sizing up the threat, remembering details, weighing in taking him out now only to have it change the moment the children walk in (either reminding him of the possible collateral or because it tipped the scales too far). Then a resolution left to your imagination, since you've seen him fight before, and will see him do it again in a more plot relevant way.. The act of cleaning and putting away the "tool" denoting that the retribution and recovery of the ring was just another good day's work. Very very well done.
I really don’t think anyone makes a more perfect face for this character than Denzel. When he’s doing his scanning thingy his face is completely emotionless, no one else can make that face as good as him.

I'm so glad to see that some of the more recent movies have brought back the filmmaking trick that sometimes what the audience doesn't see is better than what they do.
Denzel is masteful in every type of character he plays. Brilliant actor. Man on Fire and the Equaliser are his signature roles. Badass protector of the innocent ❤
This movie and countless others have always showed in situations like these how to observe. Calm your mind, breathe and scan the situation. Always pay attention to your surroundings the best you can. It's an invaluable technique to teach yourself. Relax, survey, record.
Denzel Washington's movies are always worth watching. His motivational speeches are to the point and no bs. He tells it like it is and thanks Denzel for taking the time. Those who live in 3rd world countries have way steeper punishment then here in the States. They don't mess around there. Here, you get a slap on the wrist the first 8 offenses.
But did he?Seems like maybe they ran out of money in the budget to film a fight scene with the robber so you have to use your imagination of how his retribution went.
What I love most about his character is his immense focus and discipline...he could sit I a room for hours just staring thru the window while most people would go berserk if they weren't on their phone for 10 minutes
This movie perfectly demonstrates why you don't just go around messing with someone because they appear to be weak. You NEVER know who that person who you just told you "F off" in traffic is, what they've been through, or what they're capable of.

I may be wrong but here's how I interpret the scene... the store is robbed, and Denzel sees how easy it was, so he decides to steal a hammer. The robber feels guilty or perhaps is nervous about being caught so he returns the stolen ring. Denzel, following suit, decides to return the hammer.
Right. That's how I figured it too. Denzel ran out after the thief to ask him for tips concerning store robbery or perhaps where he, the robber, purchased his bling which Denzel admired.
Crazy but true story. Decades ago, I worked at Target. One of the areas I covered was luggage. One night while I was straightening the area out. I was putting a suitcase that was at the wrong place and heard something clattering in there. People would often put other items in luggage and walk out with them because often it was too big to go over the scanner, and a scan gun was just used. So, I opened it to retrieve whatever it was and it was a knife with blood on it! Of course, police were called and they made sure to ask if I'd touched it. I told them I watch too many cop shows to be that stupid. LOL Not sure what happened after that, but it is something I won't forget
@@ANSWERTHECALLOFJESUSCHRIST I don't know. I went on maternity leave not long after and never heard another word about it. I am assuming not as I didn't hear back from the police, statement, testify anything.
It seems like a prank to me. If a crime was committed with the knife, why take the risk to travel with it and leave it somewhere you know it would be found! While if you dispose of it in a river/lake etc. there is a chance it never will! Additionaly, Targe has cameras, not that you found the person who dumped it … but there is a chance it would have been on camera.
Why would he kill him?? Nothing to learn there, He stole, so you take away his ability to steal, forever. Use your imagination to see what the guy's hands looked like after a "lesson". Never to steal again.
@@markw3598 you know he did kill him at first he probably gave him a choice like he always does for ppl and the dude thought he was better so he probably died lol it’s more of attitude that will get you killed
What a way to dispose of a murder weapon though. Steal it from a store, then later put it back right where it was and no one's the wiser. This proves that old saying, "Sometimes the perfect hiding spot is right in plain sight."
Brilliantly done. You don't have to see what happened. Taking the sledge and it's return leave your imagination to fill in the details. Given what Mr McCall does throughout the film, you can assume the robber had a really bad day. So bad, he went and got hammered.
What a great edit. The ring is stolen, cut away to nobody involved, SCENE MISSING cut back and the ring has magically reappeared, and he puts a hammer back on the wall.
Great writing. No need to add a scene telling her I will get your ring back, 5mins following the guy, waiting for him in his house....all to end with the ring back. No time wasted here. Denzel is great too. That scene only would give you 1h30' more in a Nigerian or Indian movie 🤣🤣

Agreed. This is great storytelling in any movie. No actual violence was shown, just intent. Make the right suggestions about what could and should happen and the viewer will fill in the blanks.
Robert gave new meaning to the phrase...(beat the F out of you)👍
@@RudyBleeker The Bible is great story-telling, too. It tells what will happen on Judgement Day to all the liars, robbers, thugs and murderers that do not accept forgiveness for their sins purchased by the man who will be sitting in the judgement seat. even his rudeness and impatience is a is a result of the anxiety
im not siding with him, but just wondering who was the real criminal here, just based on this scene.
a guy who stole or the guy who murdered.
@Krypto Universe yes!
The viewer realizes that this is someone not to be messed with.

Denzel shows us once again why he is truly one of the greatest actors of all time! The Equalizer is one of my all time favorite movies
Why does everyone think he killed him? He obviously just helped him build a deck or something and got paid with jewelry
Plausible!!
Dude, that, was classic.👍🏻👍🏻😂😂
Use the right tool for the job. You don't use a handheld sledgehammer on a deck. It's for light duty demo
Man, Denzel cold angry pissed off is totally believable. I always get chills with his crafting. One of the best actors. For all kinds of genres.

The equaliser actually does things we only imagine of doing to those who wrong us.
No, he does not it's a silly film version of a character from an old UK TV show with Edward Woodward much more restrained and realistic in the original role. That look in his eye when he was sizing up the robber. No emotion at all. Just committing the important details to memory. And as cool as it would be to see the ring's retrieval, the wiping down of the hammer just fills out mind with images of extreme and shocking retribution. Well done.
Sometimes less is more. Being the robber was small time, it's best to let the audience ask "What the fuck did he do?! Who is this guy?!"
This is a sign of quality writing and smart filmmaking. Leave some things to the audience's imagination, like, "WTF did McCall do to that guy?"
The first time I watched,I felt cheated we didn't get to see him use the hammer, but since, I have realized the best scene is in our heads. Hitchcock knew this. I could not be more non violent, but I love these movies.
Yes! Not showing every step allows us to fill in the details for ourselves... like he must have found the guy by his license plate.
Think of the time and money saved by not shooting that scene, and how unnecessary we all recognize it to be. These writers know what the audience needs to see and what it doesn’t to still give the audience a sense of satisfaction that justice has been served. Brilliant.
I LOVE this movie. Robert McCall stands for everything that is right in the world.
Actually he doesn't. The scene has a second meaning about how evil causes more evil, and people celebrate it. It feels good.
he's the vengeance.
Never know. McCall probable gave him a chance to return the money and especially the ring and the robber wasn’t having any of that and underestimated what awaited him

Why would he kill him?? Nothing to learn there, He stole, so you take away his ability to steal, forever. Use your imagination to see what the guy's hands looked like after a "lesson". Never to steal again.
@@markw3598 you know he did kill him at first he probably gave him a choice like he always does for ppl and the dude thought he was better so he probably died lol it’s more of attitude that will get you killed
if he didnt kill him the guy can only sing mary had a little lamb now
And that's how you dispose of the evidence. No matter how well the police search, they aren't going to find that hammer.
I imagine he probably gave the robber the same treatment as the last guy standing in the apartment from the second movie
We've been wondering what that hammer did to get that ring back since
This movie came out. Epic.
no.
no we haven't.
@@jonnyb70 yes.
yes we have.
I'm guessing the robber walks with a cane now.
@@therealrvasinger241
A limp, he cant hold a cane because his hands are all swollen up
and his fingers are broken so gotta be a limp.
a lot of mangled fingers/hands ---can't hold a gun/knife well or effectively maneuver a get-away vehicle anymore.
My favorite part is him waiting to get into the store to clean off the hammer.
I like the way McCall disengaged, when he seen the kid walk through the door in the background
The best part is that we don't need any more detail to surmise what happened 😁
Facts homie!!🤣🤞🏾🎯
DENZEL IS THE MAN !
What a way to dispose of a murder weapon though.
Steal it from a store, then later put it back right where it was and no one's the wiser.
This proves that old saying, "Sometimes the perfect hiding spot is right in plain sight."
On aisle 18.
He must have been a fan of "Lamb to the Slaughter"
He didn't "steal" it. He took it to give it a consumer's home test, and when it worked to perfection, he brought it back.
I always think of this scene whenever I go to a DIY store.
Me too. I have to walk by the hammer display.
Denzil Washington is the greatest living actor today !
Denzel is a fantastic actor.
Brilliantly done. You don't have to see what happened. Taking the sledge and it's return leave your imagination to fill in the details. Given what Mr McCall does throughout the film, you can assume the robber had a really bad day. So bad, he went and got hammered.
I agree. If they had showed what happened to the robber, it would have taken away from the poignancy of the return of the ring.
What a great edit. The ring is stolen, cut away to nobody involved, SCENE MISSING cut back and the ring has magically reappeared, and he puts a hammer back on the wall.
Adds new meaning to the term "put the hammer down."
His eyes go blank, and the person becomes an animal to be butchered. Beautiful cinematography.
I wish they didn't cut the part Denzel basing that robber's brain to a pulp :)
Me two
3:39 he's so badass he only wiped the bloodstains off the hammer when he reached its shelf! 🥵😂🤯
Great writing. No need to add a scene telling her I will get your ring back, 5mins following the guy, waiting for him in his house....all to end with the ring back. No time wasted here. Denzel is great too.
That scene only would give you 1h30' more in a Nigerian or Indian movie 🤣🤣
Everything in the store scenes were beautifully crafted script, cinematography and direction. Excellent!
Damn he made her a new ring, from memory, with just a baby sledge! Amazing!
The guy who buys that hammer will never know how or what it was used for before.
Well, it was tested against some hard bones.
That hammer should have a tag on it saying "This hammer works just fine."
Could have been used to crucify someone. 😁
He won't care, either. He needs a small sledgehammer, he buys one. As long as it works, so what.
Très beau film du grand acteur Sir DENZEL WASHINGTON
Love how he leaves the Sledgehammer in the shop to pass the evidence onto the next person in the market for a sledgehammer. Smart move
Scene: Spectacular!
Writer: Perfect
Director to make it work: Amazing
Washington to glue it together: Phenominal
Just goes to show, you dont need gore and blood to make a point!
When I saw him cleaning the hammer I was like: "Damn! We missed what he did to the guy."
This is what we need in the US now real people like him
This is what is needed on this planet: instant karma!
Now, if only we could have seen Denzel showing the nice man all of the gardening tools the store carries. Like hedge clippers, an assortment of shovels, one of those 3 pronged claws used to get through stubborn dirt. And so much more.
Denzel Washington: F*ing Legendary
