  • In this video, I show you how I created custom storage for my copy of Settlers of Catan using small plastic bins from the container store. Most of them are this product:

You did an unboxing of a game you've had for a while. Nice! Container store here I come!!

Container store is great for storage like this. I'll admit, it's not always the cheapest solution, but the quality is unmatched and it makes organizing so easy!

Dude, thank you! After watching this, I went to the container store and got a few more boxes. It doesn't seem like they carry the bigger Systema ones anymore, as you mentioned. Once I got home, spent a couple hours messing with it based on this video, and was able to get the player pieces into the container one smaller than the one you used.
But then I started thinking about including my Seafarers base expansion, so ultimately did go with the medium boxes you used for player pieces which had plenty of room to include the Seafarers ones in them. For the hex tiles and end pieces, I just rubber-banded them together since the fit was snug in the box as-is, and used a technique to identify base Catan vs expansion vs Seafarers I found elsewhere...I used sharpies to draw a single red line on the sides of the tiles and end pieces for base Catan, a double red line for the expansion ones, and a single blue line for the Seafarers. (Will do double blue for Seafarers expansion.) For the containers I used single dots for base, two dots for expansion. Using the large hinged containers I was able to put the resource cards into one (with the roads card), and another for the building cards.
Can't believe I spent this much time on this! LOL But it was quite satisfying when I was done and was able to get it all into the one box with no bulges. Took a pic of it if you're curious: gyazo.com/35ce6574fe94343f5f5fa6fd1404e81b
There should be room for Seafarers 5-6 expansion. I don't believe I'll be expanding beyond Seafarers, so this works out perfectly for me. Very much appreciate you taking the time to show how you did yours and providing some inspiration and ideas!!

Your welcome! I love, love, love the picture - so awesome! There is something so satisfying about getting them all to fit. I showed my wife and she was geeking out about it too :-) We really like the player trays all lined up vertical on the side. Thanks for sharing the idea about how to separate the base vs expansion - I'm definitely going to have to do the line trick on the side of mine.
I think the rubber bands should be fine. Some people don't like them around cards because over time they can slowly leave indentions. I think as long as the rubber bands aren't too tight, they shouldn't damage the hex tiles. It definitely leaves more room in the box than putting them inside a container like I did.
Love seeing your pic of how you came up with a solution for yours. Have you ever taken your game directly into the Container Store? I do that all the time - LOL. The employees don't even blink an eye anymore when I come in with a few games. I'll sit there and try out everything until I get the right fit. Then I just take the game up to the checkout with all of the bins in the box. They scan them all, I pay, then walk out with just my board game boxes and all of the pieces in the bins. You should try it sometime - it's pretty addicting ;-)

I think the bands I'm using are #117, so are pretty big...they're snug but not tight, and am only using them around the cardboard pieces as opposed to cards, so should be ok.
I thought about taking the game into the Container Store like you did, but I have deficiencies in the planning department. LOL I saw your vid, and just ran out to the store! Will definitely do this for new games though! Already got a "great idea" comment from the cashier who was wondering what I was going to use these containers for. :)

ha ha, good stuff! Love it when the cashier comments on what you're doing :-) glad to see that you're finding good solutions for our storage. Interestingly enough, someone on reddit commented on my Terraforming Mars storage and said something like "to each their own, but you just spend $38 on storage. You should have just bought the inserts for the box." Well, the broken token was $50 for the Terraforming Mars insert. The broken token stuff is good, but it's super expensive - even more so than the Container Store. It's cool and all, but I like the ease of just handing someone a container and saying "go"! Some games are very cheap for the Container Store setup, some not so much. Either way, they are are good quality bins. Oh, and if you get an expansion or something - guess what? You can shuffle around bins and re-use them for other games, no problem. You can't do that with a $50 insert from Broken Token.

I agree, you paint yourself into a corner if you get those inserts. Would much rather the flexibility of using the containers...can use them for other things, if you get expansions, can upgrade containers, etc. Totally with you there! Like Alton Brown says, no uni-taskers in the kitchen!

Awesome! I'll need to do this for my go-to games. The setup will be super quick😍

+Geeky Gaymer Guy good idea! Doesn't necessarily make sense for all games, but for the frequent ones it really helps. My recent addiction is Scythe. I already see a trip to the Container Store in my near future to outfit Scythe 😬

Dude, this is great! I just don't know if the OCD in me could pitch the storage tray in a game like Catan though. I'd probably need a separate bin from the Container Store to store all the unused stock inserts. This is such a better idea than baggies though. Nice video!

+Geek City USA ha ha - I totally get that. It was difficult for me to ditch the first insert, but now I do it all the time and have no problem. Once you've done a few games you realize how much better this storage is than the plastic tray that comes in most boxes.

No doubt! The quick setup and clean up is also well worth it! Cheers!
