I've been watching Emmerdale ever since Britbox was made for North America (A Netflix service with BBC and ITV content) and I officially gave up on it when it stole a story from Corrie that literally happened that week lol. It was where that rich kid hit himself to frame Robert which is a rip of Chesney hitting himself to frame Daniel on Corrie.
I'm pansexual and I'm loyal to a T. I was in a relationship for 6 years, recently. About 3 years in, my ex-partner just stopped having sex with me. And I know that he has a lower libido than mine and that he worked for a lot of hours, but it just stopped at one point. And you get to a point where you get rejected so many times, you don't even want to anymore yourself. On top of that, he did a bunch of hurtful things toward me, so in the final year or so, I thought to myself that even if he did initiate, I probably wouldn't even want to because emotionally, it would just hurt too much to do. But I couldn't easily get out of the relationship due to mutual financial dependency. I wanted to much just to have sex with somebody. I knew my relationship was falling apart. I knew I wasn't gonna get it at home. I knew that it was a source of depression for me. So the idea of cheating was a rather tempting one just due to circumstances. But even though our relationship was very fractured, I still could never bring myself to do something like that. I was still in a relationship. I made a commitment to him. And until it was over, I just couldn't do anything about it. In the final two months, I was about to repatriate and that was to be the end of things. And I knew what was on the horizon. I was going to be able to date again and meet new people after I'd repatriated. But even though I knew that that was 100% coming, absolutely, while I was still living together with him, I couldn't even bring myself to so much as browse a dating site. That's how invested I was in him and the relationship. Even though it was determined that it was coming to an end, I still couldn't even consider other people. I know I'm preaching to the choir, here, but commentary such as that, that bi people aren't loyal and they're only going to cheat really bothers me, because I'm seriously the most loyal person I know. I don't have a high opinion of myself, but I pride myself on my loyalty.
I swear you are like my long lost British sister. I found Emmerdale over here in Australia through the Robron fandom and now they are two precious cinnamon rolls that have taken over my life. This storyline absolutely broke my heart because of Robert's development up until that point and the two of them (Aaron in particular) have been through enough. If only the writers could just leave the boys in Maxine's capable hands.
Brooklyn Nine Nine, Rosa is bi, says the word, would never ever cheat, is an amazing well-rounded character, her actress Steph Beatriz is also bi! Really awesome!
OH MY GOD, this story line KILLED me. I was so happy with the Robron wedding and them FINALLY getting the happiness they deserved...being a straight woman who loves a well-plotted lgbt story that doesn't end in death or heartache...and being a Robron shipper since Robert caught Aaron and Ross in the garage with his stolen car (yes, after all these years I still remember their first meeting :) ), after everything they've been through with Robert being married to Chrissie, Robron's affair Katie's death, Robert trying to kill Aaron & Paddy, Aaron outing Robert to Chrissie, Robert getting shot, and then the story of Aaron'd abuse by Gordon the Scumbag...it was a happy day when they finally wed... And then came along Rebecca, once again getting between them...granted Aaron pushed Robert away and Robert was hurting/intoxicated/wanting to hurt Aaron...but it still KILLED me to watch Robert with Bex (I adore the actress, hate the character though). And then their marriage finally breaks when Bex gets pregnant and Aaron can't take it anymore...and after that we get the STUPID, vomit inducing storyline of Robert making Lawrence believe he loves him and that they slept together *barf*... I'm just glad that's all over now and that finally Robron are back together after a year of misery...it was also great for Aaron because he needed a step back in order to deal with his mental health on his own and to be stronger on his own without having Robert as a crutch... The Robron reunion of last night was just spectacularly beautiful and they're finally on the right path this time around... BTW, I LOVE finding booktubers who love Emmerdale and Robron as much as I do xoxo
i really feel you on this claudia. I'm an Eastenders watcher and they've had awful bisexual representation. the one long lasting bi character they've had has cheated on her partner (this was a long time ago mind you) and after she broke up with her husband and dated a women there were constant comments of "she's a lesbian now, i turned her gay" ect ect. theres currently 4 LGBT characters one of which isn't a regular. its so infuriating! affair storylines are so overdone and lazy too.
Are you talking about Sonia???!!! Because I feel your pain! I hated how many times people kept calling her gay! It was one of the reasons I went off Eastenders. xxx
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has the best bisexual representation I've seen. It's a bisexual man and a gay man in the most faithful, adorable romance~ Plus the protagonist is very well versed on feminist issues and the show covers many of them. If you can get past the cliche love triangle bull, I highly recommend it. Great LGBT representation, characters dealing with real mental health issues, wonderful musical numbers. It's on Netflix if you'd be interested.
Kels Kersa Yesss I second this recommendation! I love CEG so much, so glad a friend of mine got me to watch it even though I had my doubts since the title of the show seemed horribly sexist to me (in truth the show subverts the trope but I didn't know that at the time!). Look up the song "Getting Bi" from the show - as a bi person I think it's delightful. Also, I just love Darryl.
I couldn't agree with you more. I live in the US and it's popular over here and NO ONE can understand why the writers did what they did. It's very upsetting.
Shadowhunters has an amazing bi guy - gay man dinamic ever and they are both very interesting characters- sadly they are sidelined a lot but I think you should give it a shot. Also dizzee from the get down is a confirmed bisexual so...yeah
xyxl l it's a perceived betrayal I think. A lot of gay people feel like bi people have it better because they have the ability to fall for a different gendered person and essentially straight pass. It's not true or fair, but that's the perception a lot of people have. Couple that with a bad experience of a bi person cheating in you, biphobia in the gay community explodes
I dont watch it but I rly feel this because recently lots of people (straight, and really lovely) around me have been arguing dating bi people is a massive risk and a show like this would really confirm their unfounded beliefs
Exactly! Lots of my friends even thought this for ages. They were good people, some of them LGBT, but they just thought bi people couldn't be trusted and would cheat with another gender. xxx
It felt like that episode was missing like 50% of Robert's scenes. It was disjointed and rushed - if Robert had 2-3x the screentime they might have made his 'breakdown' more believable and more deep rather than just BOOM breakdown. Boom Rebecca. It was rushed and kind of sloppy, sadly - to me
have you seen "You Me Her"? i waited the entire season for someone to say the word bisexual, but nope. the main couple even discusses the womans attraction to other women?? but god forbid someone gives it a name
Polly Kat I literally just started watching that I love it and the characters but it’s soooo irritating how they refuse to use the word bi when it’s obviously such a big part of the storyline
I'm a little bit late commentating on this one, but I would highly recommend a show called Skam. Season 3 focuses on a teenage boy coming to terms with being gay and his first relationship with a pansexual male. It's beautifully written and pretty much the entire season focuses on their relationship. Only downside is its Norwegian but there are episodes with subtitles online. I can't rate the show high enough. Also, when will this awful emmerdale s/l be over? Somehow the writers have managed to make it worse each episode ☹️
GOODGUY 13 or Annalise Keating in How to get away with Murder, or Piper Chapman in Orange is the new Black (although she also cheats so I'm somewhat glad she hasn't labeled herself)
Legends of Tomorrow has been doing pretty good with Sarah. There's a few moments where you have to question what she's doing, but it usually doesn't affect the overall storyline
Everyone cheats in soaps. It's a classic trope of the soap opera genre - it doesn't matter whether the character is gay, straight or any other sexuality, they just use it for the drama it causes. They're not trying to say all bisexuals cheat, they're not trying to say bisexuals are evil. They just want to create drama.
I agree with much of what you stated in the video. I think I would have been more accepting of a fail attempted on Roberts part had it not been so soon after an emotional wedding. However outside of that there is another things that bothered me about this direction of the storyline. It seems to be okay with reinforcing the perception of “once a cheater, always a cheater” as if a person cannot change, especially when they are trying to do just that. That this is not seen as another form of stereotyping among most is beyond me. That said, I agree with your assessment that this to get a baby in and for me this is the reason I will no longer be watching, because I can watch sloppy writing like this in the US for free. Once again thank you for the perspective.
black sails, crazy ex-girlfriend, bob's burgers, broad city, chasing life, degrassi: the next generation, halt and catch fire, grey's anatomy, house of cards, how to get away with murder, the legend of korra, lost girl, orphan black, and shadowhunters all have bi characters!
I'm curious to know what you'd think of the show Crazy Ex Girlfriend (I know, unfortunate title, they kind of address that, but still...). It's not entirely perfect but I enjoyed it, and there's a bi man character in that which I think they did pretty well. I get the song he does in my head a lot (go look up Gettin Bi. It's hilarious) Other shows with good bi representation... Grey's anatomy? Callie Torres... Was there cheating in that though... I don't remember (I'm poly so whenever there's cheating I'm thinking about that lol). I feel like it was done well though. Shonda Rhimes
My gay uncle (not blood-related but a close friend of my parents and actual aunt and uncle) is named Robert (sometimes called Aunt Berta) and he is so flamboyant. All the love
I've just stumbled on this channel and video - so I'm super glad you also ship RobRon - but it also reminds me that the date this video was uploaded was also the date I stopped watching emmerdale..... like IM has totally ruined them and whilst Aaron now knows about the cheating I still can't bring myself to watch it and that makes me sad :(
Goodness, what a trainwreck the L Word was. I had such high hopes - so many women, so much girl love, so much representation! - only to have them crushed over and over and over and over and over. And the end of the show was horrifying! Such a shame
Aaron Dingle is the reason I got into Emmerdale because of his storyline. So disapointed in the current storyline because before that I hoped Bex would become Aarons best friend. Not gonna happen now.
Have you seen Lady Dynamite? It's a semi-autobiographical comedy series about a woman who's a comedian and is coping with mental illness. The second episode is called "Bisexual Because of Meth" and it is exactly what you're talking about in this video. But in a good way.
i really want to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that their thought process was "we need to add drama to their relationship, cheating is an easy way to do that, aaron wouldn't cheat, so robert will since it makes more sense to his character" and that they didn't think about the implications for bi people...but to be honest, i don't know if that's the case.
Do you know what, I actually think having Aaron cheat would have been more narratively interesting. I mean I don't want either of them to cheat, but just thinking about drama, that would have come right out of left field and also somehow levelled the relationship out more.
I make it my personal mission to find good bi rep because I'm pan and that's the closest I can get to positive representation :/ Here's the list I have so far: - Magnus Bane (Shadowhunters/The Mortal Instruments) - Mark Blackthorn & all the other faeries (The Dark Artifices) - Cal Price, Leah Burke & Patty Peskin (Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda/The Upside of Unrequited/Leah on the Offbeat) - Charlie Liang (Queens of Geek) - David Alleyne (Young Avengers) - Callie Torres (Grey's Anatomy) - Miles Hollingsworth III (Degrassi: Next Class) - Rosa Diaz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) - Mark Bryant (The Bright Sessions) - Darryl Whitefeather (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) - Brenna Carver (Chasing Life) - Tina Tevetino (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency) - Mason Trimmer (The Great Outdoors) I hope this helped some people :)
One Australian soap draggeeeeddddd out a bi cheating situation so much. The couple (man and woman) had planned to have a baby through surrogacy (idk why they couldn't have one together) and she freaked out about being a parent so she cheated with a woman who was only recently separated (the woman is gay). Now the story line is being dragged out because the two who were cheated (though the gay woman had been separated already so idk) on work together and are both upset. Oh and now the man is going to be raising the baby on his own. Anyway bisexual representation is basically the worst I agree! If The latest seasons of New Girl have a bisexual character played by Meghan Fox who I love (and she is bisexual herself) but she's barely in it and I'm just waiting nervously to see if/how they screw that up.
This might sound weird - but because it is a Soap (which are notorious for couples coming together and falling apart over and over and over again) if Robert and his husband didn't go through similar trials and scandals and just lived happily ever after it would be treating their relationship differently than heterosexual ones. So at least they are treating all relationships equally by having the partners cheat I suppose. XD (Although I am speaking from my experience with U.S. Soaps so... British ones might be a bit different?)
The 100 has a bi main character (they don't use the b word in the show but that's because it's set in the future and no one gives a crap about anyone's sexuality) but they did kill off one of the main gay characters which was crappy
One of the stories I'm writing at the moment has a guy who, I wouldn't say is bi, but has had a serious boyfriend before if that counts? (the bi part isn't really a big part of the plot tbh) :P
i believe that he couldn't "perform" when he was with rebeca and this is the twist that IAN was talking about.... and she just let him to believe that ...
I just feel so let down by this whole storyline. Aaron has been so insecure over Rebecca, he and Robert almost split up over it with Robert calling Aaron a child. Aaron finally gets into a position where he whole heartedly trusts him and when it gets tough, when Aaron needs him most what does Robert do? Sleep with Rebecca. Tossing away almost 3 years of great character development for what is like you said, a cheap stereotypical cheating storyline. She will get pregnant with a 'who's the dad' storyline, I bet.
Claudia Boleyn I wouldn't be surprised at this point. Some people have wanted them to have a baby, but you should be careful what you wish for 😂 I think they would lose a lot of viewers though. It's already gone down a lot
Everyone, I don't think it's all about sexuality. One's sexuality has the properties of influencing our actions especially when emotion are allowed to rule our thinking...like the emotion of anger can make us lash out at another person, even one that we're not anger with; they just happen to get in the way. The fans who have been so emotionally involved with Aaron's life and now that he's found Robert and they have what we would consider real love, it's shattering to us that Robert (and we have to admit that he's been a real scoundrel), after all they have been through has been unfaithful due to his emotions. Emotions can be wonderful or deadly. However, everyone, remember that this is a soap, yes, and that the way they real us in...with out emotions. Also, don't forget that Robert was ready to give up his life to die with Aaron when the can went into the lake. He saved Aaron...and...he went back into the lake to retrieve Aarons ring so he could ask him to marry him. Now, does that sound like feigning love for Aaron. He was willing to sacrifice himself to the love of Aaron. If anything, I think this will make Robert's love stronger for Aaron. And look at what Aaron is going through in prison...how much more will he have to do with Jason before he get out? And, don't forget that just about everyone in Emmerdale iis screwing around with everyone else...and that's the way soap go. My had hoped that Robert and Aaron would become the real stand-up and faith couple as the "faithful" couple and be the example for everyone else. Let's just hangout and see where these script writers are going to take our favorite couple. OK?
Emmerdale have never been good with bisexual Characters.Debbie and Vanessa have both been in love with woman but now both there Characters are straight when they could have made them bi
Emmerdale is just fast food tv; quickly produced, disposable daytime rubbish. They aim to retain their viewership with formulaic tripe to appease audiences and advertisers. The writers have no obligation to break stereotypes.
They don't have any obligation, no, but I think that's actually underestimating a show like Emmerdale. They've gone out of their way to educate people on important issues before, and they've done that pretty well. I don't think that does the Emmerdale team (and other soap writers) a disservice. They're a smart bunch and they've written some brilliant educational storylines in the past which have changed so many people's minds about certain topics.
Am I missing something? Like, I am having a hard time thinking of someone that hasn't cheated or been cheated on on that show, and I HARDLY think this is about bisexual people being more likely to cheat than straight people.... so basically, it's assumed that EVERYONE cheats as far as I can tell. So yeah.... WHY is it a big deal that the bisexual guy isn't basically the only one on the show not to cheat, and who is basically better than the straight people? To me, this is just another affair played up for drama, and not in ANY way a commentary on bi people cheating more than others.
I may be losing my mind, and I can't put my finger on what it is, but for some reason I feel like something is missing from the far right of the frame that's usually there.
1:09 That isn't because he was bisexual, that is simply how shows create drama. The exact same thing would have happened and has happened in shows where the characters are straight or gay. The fact that it was a bi character has nothing to do with the writing decision to make the character cheat on their partner. This was a writing decision to create drama. Considering your background I have no idea how you don't understand this.
"Normal straight people, what an oxymoron!" I live
How is that an oxymoron? Normal and homosexual would be the oxymoron as the entire species would have already died off it homosexuality was the norm.

I hope this helped some people :)
XD
(Although I am speaking from my experience with U.S. Soaps so... British ones might be a bit different?)
The 100 has a bi main character (they don't use the b word in the show but that's because it's set in the future and no one gives a crap about anyone's sexuality) but they did kill off one of the main gay characters which was crappy
MY QUEEN!!! Robron is my favourite ship. They my OTP and yes I was fucking devastated when Robert cheated 😭😭
You look lovely! Your hair and makeup looks so pretty :)
Thank you! xxx
Completely unrelated to the video topic but where is your rainbow top from? I love it!
One of the stories I'm writing at the moment has a guy who, I wouldn't say is bi, but has had a serious boyfriend before if that counts? (the bi part isn't really a big part of the plot tbh) :P
Cheating in in Robert's natural, he cheated on Chrissie with countless people (that's just Robert not bisexual people)
i believe that he couldn't "perform" when he was with rebeca and this is the twist that IAN was talking about.... and she just let him to believe that ...
Why do you believe that? He has always been able to perform with women- long before Aaron joined the show.
idk i have the feeling bc in the youtube channel say"kiss" why they don't say "sex " cmon something is up... or maybe I'm in denial....
oh my daysss does this speak to me on another level! robron ruin me
I just feel so let down by this whole storyline.
If they make her a vessel for the Robron baby, though.... I dread to think.
I'm still holding out hope for one of them or both of them actually being officially bi. Especially Debbie. xxx
Emmerdale have fully ruined my life I was so happy because of the robron wedding because they were finally happy and they just ruined it
oh yep, they threw a baby on the scene too!! it all keeps getting better and better hahaha. 🙄
I feel your pain!!! I couldn't believe it either!!!!
robert jacob sugden !! man that its a fan ....
Mych _ The door, I think. she has it closed in this video I guess.
Magnus on shadowhunters is bi and great
Anyone here have shows that have great lgbt+ relationships? I need them. Emmerdale is making my bi heart cry.
LittleMeLindsey yes Skam

Oml just all the characters are on point it's so well written EVAK
Hey Claudia, I'm considering watching Emmerdale, so which season would you suggest I start watching from?
Døbby! The PhanElf it's a soap, not series so there aren't any seasons :) You just jump right in!
That One TH-cam Comment oh ok
I was just confused because the site I was gonna watch it on split it up into seasons
The most consistent clips around start with Aaron's story circa December 2008. You may want to try those.
Ken George Jones thanks!
I have that shirt. I wore it today!
Soap always doing things and this why I not in to soaps.
Also with jails its the money goes to wrong place.
Awwwww İvy and Harley on your shelf. So cute.
I love Harley and Ivy so much. xxx
