Only been to this junction once on a Saturday afternoon, but what a different the location was on a morning for freight trains on a weekday. Filmed on the 6/12/2023
Brings back memories! I used to sit on that bridge in the 70s having cycled 3 miles from home to get there! It was more interesting then, the variety of traction was amazing and very much missed.
Great memories Mike. Indeed in the first shot I can almost feel the power car lurch as it took the curve from the Up Erewash Slow onto the Trowell branch, then notch one of power to pull it around the corner, then as you pass the 70mph speed board count 4 seconds for each P/car & coach before opening the taps. The climb up to the summit meant you would still be under full power. Once over the top it was best practice shut off before you reached 70 as the amps on a P/Car take quite a few seconds to run down during which time you'll gain up to another 5-10 mph. Then rub the brakes early as the steep downhill gradient and subsequent speed changes from 70-35-30 were at the foot of one of the worst adhesion areas on the Midland. Worse still the timings along the Trowell branch were frequently way too tight and reaching Notts on-time wasn't common. EDIT: Incidentally, during my last year at Derby I worked an EMR train (class 222) that was booked to stop at Ilkeston. I'm sure it was the first service EMR ever stopped there as the station was only used by Northern at the time. Maybe someone out there knows the date/time?
Nice one Mike. Never seen this place before. I guess folk go to other places nearby and miss this gem of a place. You even get to see standing starts and quite a few trains using the points which I always like to see.
Fantastic video Mike, that looked a really good location with some good freight workings through there. As for the thrash from 37610, you have to say thanks driver, top man 😄 Thanks for sharing Mike and have a good week. Colin.
Yes indeed Colin that driver could see our friend in a bright coat. But the day I went it perfect weather, cold frosty and sunny just how I like it, and NO wind, just right. Cheers Colin for your continued interest in my videos, regards Mike.
Cheers Tony I had a great time in the area as its been ages since I last went there, and then for one train with a 56 on the front. Take care and keep safe Mike.
Used to sit on a grass bank here in the 1950s watching freight train after freight train with occasional passenger train hauled by jubilee class locos.
@@antman09ful1 It was indeed, they used to crawl along because the track was in a terrible state due to all the mining subsidence. It was even better at the old Trent Station where the trains would be stacked up class 9f after 9f waiting to get into the Toton yards. Oh what memories. Then them damned diesels came along.
Smashing shots and captures there Mike. Nice sounds and liveries. Good action and variety. Nice tones too. Excellent detailing and camera work! Another gooden from you! That was a busy spot. Great 37 to end with as well. Very nice indeed! Really enjoyed, thanks for sharing! Take care, have an awesome day and all the best! Jamie
