  • In this video I discuss various 7.62x39 magazines for the AR-15 platform from D&H Tactical, ASC and C Products. I'll let you know what works and what to avoid.
Finding a reliable magazine to feed my 7.62x39 AR was a huge pain in the rear. Hopefully, my trials and experience will help others avoid the same frustration that I experienced and lead to more fun at the range and in the field. A gun that won't feed is certainly no fun.
    30 round C Products
    20 round ASC
20 round Duramag from C Products
    10 round ASC
    10 round D&H Tactical

I stopped at 2 minutes after not hearing a single word about what buffer was in the gun. My gun was way over gassed and it was causing the bolt to cycle too fast. Put in a H3 buffer and the double feeds stopped and it ejected at about 5 o'clock rather than close to 1 o'clock. Short magazines with stronger springs did work with the lighter buffer. After the buffer change even the weaker spring magazines worked well.

I have three of the D&H 30-Round 7.62×39mm magazines and they run great. Maybe one or two hang-ups every hundred rounds, no more.
Also, I have a few ASC 30-Round 7.62×39mm magazines and, as with the lower capacity ones they make, SUCK as they are, brand new. I've since gotten them to work fairly reliably after filing down the front wall to allow for better clearance of the rounds, as well as changing out the standard floor plates for Magpul Ranger plates. They are now about as reliable as my C-Products 30-Rounders.

I've seen other reviewers state similar problems with all 7.62X39 mags especially in the 30 round configuration. It seems the problem is as you found with the nose of the bullet hitting the front of the mag. The solution I've seen most often work is to remove about 1/16'' - 1/8'' of metal in the front of the mag with a Dremel in a light curve fashion. This gives the top round the clearance it needs to be stripped off by the BCG and feed reliably. On the mags that currently don't work this may be worth a try.

I had to "break in" all my 28 round DuraMags and ASC 20 rounders.
I loaded them and unloaded by hand a half dozen times each. Then, I cycled them all through the rifle a few times each.
The 28 round DuraMags are my favorite because they fit in my chest rig on my plate carrier as well as my Esstac pouches on my belts.
    Thanks for the video

Thanks for putting this up, I have had nothing but issues with ASC and AR Stoner 7.62x39 mags especially the 10rd versions. One thing I noticed right away, ASC and AR Stoner use 5.56 followers in the 10rd, but 7.62 followers in the 30 round. I got into huge argument with Midway about that, the 5.56 follower doesn't fit the profile of the round correctly and that causes jamming. Look closely at the followers, I think you will agree. Thanks again SUPER helpful video! Cheers!

I just recently picked up the D&H tactical 30 round magazines they run great. Haven’t had a misfeed yet. The only negative I can say about them is after you load 20 rounds, The spring pressure is really tight makes adding last 10 rounds a chore they are fairly new after a few more times cycling it might loosen up a bit.

  • @Drawde907

C-products and ACS 30 round mags work flawless for me . C-products 20 round also work flawless . If you have D&H mags purchased in last year or so those should also be good to go , they fixed an issue i found and they have been great since .
My advice when building a 7.62x39 . Since they are sometimes picky with mags
#1 Try out different mags when you find some that work 100% buy some more .
#2 Get a adjustable gas block , this is a must IMO it doesn't matter whether you're going to run suppressed or not just get one .
#3 Get a enhanced firing pin my recommendation is red x arms
#4 while not a hundred percent necessary , try to buy a barrel that's MADE for 7.62X39 not just chambered for it, but actually made for it (feed ramps )

I have both the c-products gen 1 and gen 2 duramag (28 & 30rd) as well as ASC mags in all capacities.
I prefer the c-products mags, especially the gen 2 duramag because the feed angle is more pronounced and less likely to snag HP ammo. The finish is much better than ASC but I've had zero issues with either brand with thousands of rounds through them assorted HP/SP/FMJ. One of my ASC 20rd mags has the finish 90% removed and almost 2k rounds through it but I can tell the mag spring is getting weaker.

I personally think the 20 rounders are the best for size. Not as unwieldy as the long and awkward 28 rounders, holds more than the 10 rounders, fits decently well in most AR mag pouches.

Before the unjustified crap was unleashed on Blackwater and for a limited time around 2008 you could have one of their four outstanding armorers custom build you an AR chambered in the Blackwater Contractor’s 7.62x39mm. I was fortunate enough to have one built. Not cheap; but I will not go down the list ..., mine had Daniel Defense Rails as an example. They shipped with C Products mags just like Armalite does in that caliber. That should say all you need to know about which mags to use just like the extremely good review just confirmed. Thirty round are hard to find right now; but twenty round can be found if you look consistently over a week.

I know this video is 2 years old but here's my 2 cents... I've used lots of ASCs for my 7.62x39 and other brands as well with no malfunctions but here's why...no matter what brand you have you have to take a small belt sander or a Dremel tool and grind away some of the material at the top front of the magazine maybe a big 1/8 of an inch or a little more...not matter the brand this works.

I have experience with two D&H Tactical thirty round magazines. They are really twenty-six or less rounds. When I filled them to more than 26 rounds, I experienced failures to feed. The magazines are large in size. I ruined one of the magazines (my fault). I dropped it on the feed lips and ruined it. The other has been very reliable with twenty-six or less rounds with full metal jacket rounds. I would give them four out of a five star rating, in my opinion.
My favorite magazines thus far are the C-Products (also called Dura-Mag) twenty-eight round magazines for the 7.62 x 39 AR-15.

    Excellent vid!
I have a handful of various capacity ASC mags and they just don’t work in my PWS Rifle. I bought C Products 28 rd duramags and they were a little better but jammed a lot! I dremmeled out a small half circle on the front edge of one of them where hollow point ammo was smashing into it and it seemed to help with the feeding jams for regular hardball ammo and improved feeding for hp ammo. I had a whole mag run without a jam last weekend and finally realized that I’m tired of dealing with this thing jamming. I bought the Ross unimags and when they arrive I hope that they’re the answer that I have been looking for.

I also saw that but fortunately I didn’t have to get that drastic.
I bought the Ross Defense Unimags and it runs like a sewing machine now.
Only issue I have left is that occasionally a round won’t go off even though I’m running the enhanced firing pin and it’s a deep primer strike. I’m going to remove the Wilson Combat trigger and put one in with a mail-spec spring to see if it helps.
Here’s to hoping that it’s finally going to run as reliably as the other PWS guns that I’ve owned.
If you’re in need of reliable mags for X39, I can’t recommend the Unimags any more highly.

@@1AbominAble1 I never heard of the unimags, just looked them up and they seem amazing! Why buy a bunch of mags for different calibers when I can invest in these do it all mags.
As far as your light primer strikes go, I have heard that a lot of people pair their enhanced firing pin with the stronger spring to really solve this problem on mil-spec triggers. Would the enhanced spring fit on your trigger?

I really like the Unimags, the X39 feeds as smoothly and reliably as 5.56 now. I’d still stick to Pmags for 5.56 because I think the hold the round in the feed lips better, but, I wouldn’t be upset if I had to run Unimags exclusively.
I don’t have any 6.5, 6.8, 300 blk, 450 BM, etc, so I can’t say wether they work for those calibers or not, but, with how great they work with X39 I believe the marketing.
C-Products and ASC spent a lot of time and money to make Z39 mags work and are a miserable failure in comparison to the Unimag.
I bought a couple initially and I’m planning on getting a few more.
If you try them on other calibers please let me know how they work for you.

I could have been loading them with a bad technique though lol. First time tbh. I was lining the bullet up as far back as possible before pushing down...should I be pushing them in a bit more forward and kind-of sliding them back as they go in? I'll get the hang of it. Thanks for the video, def staying away from ASC and will just stick with D&H or possibly duramag if the price tempting enough!

I reload for 'deer' rounds, everything else is steel fmj/sp. The feed ramps on most extensions chews up the shoulders of brass so I've had to open them a bit and blend corners. Never had a problem with feeding though, at the beginning I was loading 5.56 mags with 3-4 rounds because I didn't have the correct mags. I think I've been using cpd mags, and haven't had issues related to mags as far as I know. Usually it's firing pins or gas settings causing problems (me making my own problems), not feeding or ejecting 🤷‍♂️

ASC are not good mags. Had em loaded full minus one for about 2 months in storage, grabbed a couple of em on my way to the range and upon arrival to the range i went back home in 15 mins. For 15 mins i was trying to figure out those mags. Springs lost tension and didnt have enough compression in em to push rounds up. Since than lost the upper with those mags.

I have had issues with both C product and ASC. Thumbing rounds out of the mag i found two spots that caused issues. The bullet lip is sharp edged on steel rounds so it catches the front edge of mag. Used dremel to remove 1/16th off and micro files to bevel inside front edge of mag. Next would be the mag side walls, middle rib, top of mag. The rear of the round would catch the middle rib. So vice grips to pinch and flatten the upper middle rib, about 1/4 inch worth. Thumb testing rounds will show if more needs to be done.
Final is the follower, i found that some needed sanding due to plastic injection issues. Caution to not remove too much, just the spots that rub against interior of mag. Of course you can leave alone and overtime, with use, the high points will rub away. I did all 16 30 rounders .. don't have time and prefer to conserve ammo due to domestic .. issues.
Steel 124gr fmj, laq and sealed rnds in BCA 16". Brass had zero issues in unmodified mags. Of course enhanced parts; extractor, hammer spring, H2 (extraction timing assist), flat wire buffer spring, firing pin.
Check your gas block, factory may have messed up a hair worth and or set screws and that's all it takes for piss poor recycling.
Ammo Seek : set search to magazines, c product and it will give a list of companies currently in stock

I bought the Ross Defense Systems Unimag. Holds 25 rnds of 7.62x39 and under full loading they work flawless. Only 2 issues is that they are $20 each and the manufacturing is inconsistent causing them to not drop properly in some lower receivers. I have an Anderson lower that both drop empty. In the spikes tactical, one of them doesn't drop when empty. They don't have 10 rounders so I will look at the D&H. YES! The ASC SUCK!!

I have the same experience as you as a few of mine are hard to insert into the mag well with the bolt locked back. I am going to try and polish the areas where they’re rubbing excessively in the magwell to hopefully get them to go in/out easier. My biggest gripe on the Ross defense is that if you drop a full mag on the ground, the rounds go everywhere! Doesn’t happen to my regular x39 at mags but oh well. Just gotta make sure not to drop them! Haha
