Honestly, I believe Maeve proved that she was in fact self aware.
At first she was like "What a strange looking creature." and even peaked behind the mirror to see if there was another bird back there.
When she didn't see one, she eventually did an experiment of her own, bringing two of her cap toys to the mirror to see if they would show up, and checking behind the mirror a couple of times for good measure.
What sealed it though, was the piece of tape.
At first she wasn't totally sure if it was on another bird or on her, but once she figured out it was on her, she left the mirror and focused on trying to get the tape off.
How do I know she figured it out?
Because as you said, you put the tape on a blind spot for her.
How else would she know it was there unless she knew the mirror was her reflection?
In conclusion, Maeve is an intelligent bird.
Much more intelligent than one of my family's dogs, Snoopy, who barks at his reflection everytime he sees it in a blank TV screen.
He would not pass the mirror test of intelligence. 😂

He definitely didn't react like he thought that was another bird, you're right. He just calmly looked at himself. I mean he is really alarmed when Bea comes too close to him so in no way would he have acted that calm if he thought that was another bigass Toco toucan like himself. :D
Haha yeah when I bring my cat to the mirror I honestly feel she's saying, "yeah, and?" and just blinks at me, in the reflection of the mirror. She knows it's me in the mirror so I imagine she can recognise herself but just does not care at all

maybe its an "i dont care" reaction though, because, i own mice, and their reaction is very much to just be like "nah" and then leave. they definitely dont care enough to bother. but this is also a good thought, bc we KNOW toupac is incredibly smart, especially in the way he trusts brock, and knows brock is there to help him.
I believe Maeve is self aware because she got the different lid to test it out for herself. She really seems to get it!

I am pretty sure toucans don't play with each other like that. Plus, we've seen how she reacts to new birds so if she really thought that was another bird, even at the beginning, she would have probably attacked it. She was clearly looking at the reflection and the tape experiment proved that she got that what she sees in the mirror is actually on her. She may not comprehend it to the extend that a great ape or elephant does but it's pretty close.
It seems like she 'almost' gets it, like her little brain is frying trying its damned best.
They are so almost getting it that it's frustrating to watch. That's not to say they are dumb by any means, almost getting it still puts them miles ahead of most animals.

Yeah, I was thinking the blue cap is a different color to her in the mirror.
Birds see ultraviolet, and silver coated mirrors do not reflect UV very well. To her a UV colored cap would then look blue in the mirror. The mirror might actually be showing birds how we (humans) see the world with our limited color vision. Disregard if the mirror was aluminium coated though :P.

I once put my cat in a box with holes and the sides are all mirrors, the box is pretty big, big enough that she can jump and play around, i recorded all of it and she was just confused and was spinning around

autumn colbeth but it wasn’t something really big, it was a tiny piece of tape barely stuck to her feathers at all. I would understand if it was at the base of the feathers, closer to the skin, but it isn’t. It wasn’t getting caught on anything either. We aren’t the bird so we don’t know for sure, but she could clearly see the tape in the mirror.

That was fascinating! It's clear that Maeve figured the whole mirror thing out. At first I thought she was bringing the orange cap to give to her 'friend' in the mirror. What's interesting is that kittens will freak out at the other kitten they see in the mirror but grown cats don't really pay much attention to mirrors except to occasionally admire themselves in the reflection.
I loved this so much - Maeve is such an inquisitive girl and you really do see a level of understanding and comprehension in her that is remarkable.
I used to have a cockatiel who loved to see himself in the mirror. He would walk back and forth and put his head against the mirror then whistled at himself. I miss that dude. He was the coolest.

I'd say it looks like Maeve does know that's her reflection. She starts off with the toys, testing out what's going on and then looking behind the mirror; not like how a dog runs barking at a dog on TV and then runs behind the TV to find the dog when it goes off screen. I think it's meaningful for Maeve, she's learning from it and she's trying to figure out what the mirror is and how it relates to her seeing a reflection. I think she pieces it together after some time, the different toys are different ways for her to piece things together.
At first, the tape is something she sees in the reflection and she tries to go for it but after some attempts of testing the waters by trying to take the tape off the reflection, she twigs on that this isn't working and realises it's not working because isn't another toucan with tape on it in the mirror. So, she flies off to the side and goes for where the tape is to get it off. She could have only knew to remove the tape because she had seen the tape on her reflection in the mirror as she couldn't see the tape on her front by herself, she needed to see the reflection to know it was there. I'd say that this is a good start and is pointing in the direction to show that Maeve recognises that the reflection is of her.

it almost seemed to me like maeve was trying to reach THRU the mirror and get the toy from "mirror maeve" specifically around 8:16 and 8:31 when the toy is brought over maeve puts it right up against the mirror but her beak reaches for the gatoraide caps reflection first, im not sure if that was just like fumbling to pick it up or what but its interesting.

that's amazing, it's as though Maeve was performing her own set of experiments with the mirror
its like her brain can't quite grasp the concepts its being given. she seemed to be using the mirror to help her see the toy from different angles so it was easier to catch. but when the tape test happened, it was like her brain couldn't hold the idea that the two images of the tape were conceptually the same pieces of tape. when she was playing with the lids it was like her brain understood the relation between the reflected object and the real object, or she was trying to figure out the relation. but when the tape test commenced, it was like her brain couldn't quite understand/get past the notion that there WAS no other bird.
it was like she understood the mirror was confusing her and she had to move away from it to figure out the puzzle, though. conceptually, she knew the tape was ON her, but couldn't figure out why she couldn't reach through the mirror to grab it. more interestingly, she understood the reason she couldn't reach through the mirror: because it's in the way. to get the mirror out of the way, you have to move away from it. i think I had the seam realization as a baby.
I remember as a kid not knowing if my reflection was another person or not. the mirror seems magical. and i confused the words 'mirror' and 'window' until i was maybe 7 years old. though to be fair, i confused the words 'salad' and 'lettuce' until I was around the same age.
obviously the true reason for why you can't reach into the mirror is because it's just a flat object reflecting a copy of the room. but until you learn that relation or have it explained to you by bill nye the science guy, it just doesn't click that way. your brain thinks the reason you can't reach into the mirror is because there's an invisible barrier stopping you from doing so: a more familiar concept if you've ever been in a cage/crib or sat at a window for a while. or you think the reason you can't reach into the mirror is because no matter what angle you approach it from, your hand inside the mirror meets your other hand and they push against each other. you learn you can gather information from the mirror, but that's it. you can't reach in and get TWO toys where there was once just one.
I mean considering how difficult it is for the adult human brain that has looked into the mirror hundreds of times to do certain movements while looking in the mirror (the left and right issue) it's quite remarkable that she figured so much out in such a short amount of time. I love birds! *cries * :D

as brock did state she isnt attacking the mirror which she isnt... but i agree with u if that was a new bird she would have let out a call possibley to warn flock or possibley acturally attack it brock is right she does have an attack mode which u can see in other videos and if u compare this isnt it she isnt being as aggressive. this video is more of her tasting, feeling and seeing the mirror reflection. ^-^

I think she totally gets what’s going on after a while, and that it’s NOT another bird she’s seeing in the mirror. The adhesive patch on her throat really makes me think that way :)

That is very good investigative behavior. Recognizing that she could bring something else into the frame like that proves she knows that she is seeing a virtual image. Eventually figuring out that the tape was on herself was amazing to watch! She was really curious the whole time turning her head like that. I think Toupac was the biggest cutie though
I think it's also worth noting that Maeve was raised in captivity and sort of "enculturated", so that could also influence the result of the test. The same is also true for most of the apes that take the test, and people still argue over whether this is something they could naturally do. Really cool for you to test this with toucans though! Hoping for more stuff like this :)

I have an African Grey parrot. They are smart, and for the most part considered to be self-aware animals, but as I see it, she rethinks the mirror thing every time she sees it. They're smart about figuring puzzles out, but there is no prefrontal cortex thinking going on, and selective regarding what they remember.
Birds brains are much different than mammalian brains.Structures like prefrontal cortex doesn't work with birds brains.
I think Meave behaved as being self-aware, some sort of self awareness as bringing her toys of different colours to make sure that is something not related to herself doing so.
I kept waiting for Maeve to tip over the mirror from behind and smash it in typical Maeve fashion.
I think the test was almost there but not quite. She seems to realize it is her in the mirror by trying to get the tape off (assuming she wouldn't equally try to get the tape off of a nearby toucan due to her liking to play with such things). But not quite to the level of using the mirror to aid in picking it off, like I've heard of other animals doing.

There's always the mirror trick when you get a puppy. They usually go crazy! It's so cute. But over time they get desensitized just like we do... Except my Rottie. She LOVES staring at herself.

This bird is doing science. The blue cap was testing a hypothesis.
For the record, my dog Jessie, a Cocker Spaniel standard poodle cross or cockapoo, was never fooled by mirrors. We had a floor length mirror in my mom's room when we first got her. She caught movement in the mirror out of her peripheral vision and stopped walking. As soon as she locked eyes on her reflection, she stared intently for a few seconds and then never gave that mirror, or any other, a second look.

I fully believe that animals can recognize their reflection. My cats and my conure will actually use our mirrors to make eye contact with me, ignoring their own reflection to find me.

Definately. There was a goose that sat outside my work alone for a few weeks, I fed it eggs everyday and it would get close and hiss at me as it ate out of my hand. It came back this year. I'm amazed. I think it may even remember me. If they're smart enough to do that I'm sure they're smart enough to be self aware!

if you watch closely she doesn't just take her toy there, she is trying to confirm it's a reflection by trying to take the "second toy in the mirror" out of it! because if it's a reflection there wouldn't be any toy that she could grab! what a smart way to confirm it's a reflection! maeve is amazing!! 😍

I feel like testing two cap colors and the tape is pretty conclusive. Leave the mirror out for a couple days and see what happens!
