    Wait! Notice something, they can detect the pitch. It's not the syllables they're imitating, it's the pitch. A high pitched or rising pitch call like "Amy" or "Bye Bye" is followed by shrieky imitations. Whereas the flattening out ones like "One Two" is followed by the raspberry noises. They're not imitating us they're trying to communicate & probably trying to understand us, like we them.

    As a former sonar technician for the US Navy, the passive sounds of the sea never get old. Sound in water travels faster and for much greater distances than in the atmosphere. Hence, noise pollution is much more impactful than one might expect. Especially for creatures that depend upon sound for navigation.
    Before mechanical ships, whales could theoretically communicate three thousand miles apart if their songs entered a SOFAR (Sound fixing and ranging channel). Of course, it was likely one-way communication at such extreme ranges because it would take a while for sound to travel that far. Back in the day (early 80s) when I was a sonar technician, we called it the "Sound Channel Axis" (SOFAR is a new term to me). Apparently, the terminology has changed as search engines don't like the old terminology (Sound Channel Axis).

      Wasted, do you feel that it would be ethical to bring these orcas up into our sentient level of awareness? If we can communicate with them in the future: is it a good or bad idea, if we were to make them more intelligent, and civilized, and integrated into our civilization?

      I recommend that you read "Broca's Brain" by Carl Sagan. It will answer your question better than I can. There is a recent article, however, that describes a modern dilemma facing college professors. They claim that an increasing number of students lack the basic ability to read a novel front to back so perhaps recommending a book is no longer fashionable. Further, your absurd question leads me to believe that you might be one of those folks that the professors are complaining about. We certainly do seem to celebrate ignorance lately.

It is a series where various sentient species uplift (evolve) other species, making them sentient and acting as their mentors. It has both human and alien protagonists. Humans uplift dolphins and chimps. Chimps then go on to uplift gorillas. By the sound of your question maybe you've already read the series or know about it?

      @DaveGrean 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So ... if you meow at a cat, or bark at a dog, are you doing it because you're legitimately trying to communicate with them...?
      Because I certainly don't, and neither do most other people. We do it for amusement. We don't expect for a second that the cat or dog will actually understand our intentions just because we're mimicking a sound we regularly hear them make. Why assume differently for cetaceans?
      Do you also think that parrots - notorious for mimicking human speech for no particular reason - are actually trying to communicate with us?
      Sorry but it just doesn't make much sense. They're just copying sounds they're hearing us make

      @@Biketunerfy So ... if you meet a person whose language you don't speak (and let's pretend for the sake of argument that you have no resources at your disposition such as Google Translate or dictionaries) ... you're going to attempt to communicate with them by ... mimicking words they say, which you don't even know the meaning of...?
      Because, I'm sorry, but that's really not going to work. You'd both have to use gesticulation, and point at relevant objects, in order to make each other understand what certain words mean, which you obviously can't do with a cat or dog, nor can a cetacean do it with you.
      The idea of interspecies communication is actually one of my biggest fascinations, but just mindlessly mimicking the sounds the other is producing is really not going to lead to any sort of mutual understanding, not even in the most rudimentary capacity. I don't understand how this could possibly not be self-evident. The dog obviously has no way of knowing what you're thinking when you're barking at it, and you obviously have no way of knowing what the whale is feeling while it's trying to copy the sound of "byebye" or "one-two". It obviously has no way of knowing what those sounds mean. They're just sounds to them, just like a dog's bark is just a bark to you.

The exception is legit rehabilitation or sanctuary facilities., in order to help them take care of the animals. I have always loved animals so much, and when you spend time with with them and observe them, you come to know that they have their own intelligence, personality, and their own community and ways.
      I think humans are at our greatest when we are aware that the Earth is their home too, and we have a responsibility to Earth, and all life on Earth, not just ourselves. The negative things we do reverberate and have domino effects.They deserve unpolluted habitat to live in without trash, plastic, or chemicals and they certainly deserve to live their lives and not be our slaves.
