So ... if you meow at a cat, or bark at a dog, are you doing it because you're legitimately trying to communicate with them...? Because I certainly don't, and neither do most other people. We do it for amusement. We don't expect for a second that the cat or dog will actually understand our intentions just because we're mimicking a sound we regularly hear them make. Why assume differently for cetaceans? Do you also think that parrots - notorious for mimicking human speech for no particular reason - are actually trying to communicate with us? @@Biketunerfy So ... if you meet a person whose language you don't speak (and let's pretend for the sake of argument that you have no resources at your disposition such as Google Translate or dictionaries) ... you're going to attempt to communicate with them by ... mimicking words they say, which you don't even know the meaning of...? Because, I'm sorry, but that's really not going to work. You'd both have to use gesticulation, and point at relevant objects, in order to make each other understand what certain words mean, which you obviously can't do with a cat or dog, nor can a cetacean do it with you. The idea of interspecies communication is actually one of my biggest fascinations, but just mindlessly mimicking the sounds the other is producing is really not going to lead to any sort of mutual understanding, not even in the most rudimentary capacity. I don't understand how this could possibly not be self-evident. The dog obviously has no way of knowing what you're thinking when you're barking at it, and you obviously have no way of knowing what the whale is feeling while it's trying to copy the sound of "byebye" or "one-two". It obviously has no way of knowing what those sounds mean. They're just sounds to them, just like a dog's bark is just a bark to you.

@mel1503 No, this is something that has been forced upon them in captivity, it's called pavlovian conditioning. Watch Blackfish if you haven't already. Will really open your eyes.
A mother orca was separated from her baby in captivity, and she attempted to call out for her baby using long distance calls, it was the first time scientists had ever heard such a call, when there was no response she went into a deep depression, and was further punished by pavlovian conditioning, basically "perform for us or you starve", and when orcas are starved, the other orcas don't like it and they attack the one not 'doing their job', this is also talked about in Blackfish, truly heartbreaking. They don't deserve to be locked up for our entertainment.

They are trying to communicate with us. Amazing.
No, they aren't. They're mimicking sounds.
So ... if you meow at a cat, or bark at a dog, are you doing it because you're legitimately trying to communicate with them...?
Because I certainly don't, and neither do most other people. We do it for amusement. We don't expect for a second that the cat or dog will actually understand our intentions just because we're mimicking a sound we regularly hear them make. Why assume differently for cetaceans?
Do you also think that parrots - notorious for mimicking human speech for no particular reason - are actually trying to communicate with us?
Sorry but it just doesn't make much sense. They're just copying sounds they're hearing us make
@@DaveGrean yes I do. Whole heartedly.
