    Dude, after YEARS and countless hours searching TH-cam, watching TH-cam vids etc... Finally someone who does a crystal clear and simple explanation of a VFX Blender tut. You got a sub from me. Thanks for making this. I'm looking forward to seeing more. One of the best and concise explanations I've seen on TH-cam. Perfect bro, only a question, why Blender 2.79?

    • @ClassyDogStudios
      @ClassyDogStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      Oh, the main reason is because I didn't know how to set up my render passes in the newer versions of Blender, since I was used to having groups and layers instead of just collections! And there were so many shots to create for that video, I decided to stick with the version I was comfortable with. Though I want to start using the new versions of Blender for videos soon, especially with all the new features being added.

    • @ClassyDogStudios
      @ClassyDogStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Patrick! It might be a bit of a lazy solution, but I figured the time spent trying to come up with something better would exceed just changing out the HDRI and rendering again!

    • @TheDuckCow
      @TheDuckCow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ClassyDogStudios Sometimes, a lazy solution = just not overthinking it and avoiding unnecessary time and effort. Much easier to place and play with a mask to make it feel right, rather than try to sort out messy shadow and light setting and have to do many re-renders to get it to feel right. So totally in line with your last statement!

    I was gonna stop watching this because you are using 2.79...and I 2.90, but your wealth of additional links to other tuts are extremely useful and I kept looking at your upload date showing May 1, 2020 (that's this year!). This was like an "executive summary" how to do it...
    I wonder why you used Ae's tracker compared to Blender's? I have experience with Ae's tracker and from the little I've seen of the Blender tracker system, it seems "easier" and more sophisticated...then again, I've been taking my stuff into UE4 and doing my rendering that way...
    Do you have any issues with Blender not having the ability that I can see to denoise the shadow pass (even though it produces the shadow pass and denoise shadow data, I have no idea how to use it to denoise the pass)? It's amazingly convoluted how you have to use cycles to get the shadow catcher to work in the first place, and then make different layers and collections to turn visibility on and off to effect what you want...though I forever thank Jacob for showing me that too. Sock mic or not!
    How would you compare UE4 rendering the scene and Blender rendering the scene, if you've worked in EU4? If it's good enough for "I got beat by a girl" _The Mandalorian_ on Disney+, it's good enough for me.

      Hi, Jeff! I'm glad the video was useful to you! For the tracking, I decided to use the AE tracker whenever I could, just because it generally takes much less effort compared to the Blender tracker. Of course, there are times when the AE tracker just doesn't produce a good solve, or I'll need to track an object as opposed to the camera, so in those cases I'll end up using the Blender tracker. But it's purely just seeking the "path of least resistance" you could say, especially when working with a sequence made up of many shots that need tracking.
      I've actually got very little experience with the denoiser options in - I have heard that the new options in (I think) Blender 2.8 are good, and I hope to try them out soon. You're right, it would be nice to run a denoiser on shadows passes to save a bit of time. I've noticed those tend to take a little longer to render to a clean result.
      And I haven't used Unreal Engine at all yet, I'm a little daunted to try it out because I'm worried it will be so different from what I'm used to and difficult to learn. I've never used a game engine before. But I'd like to try it out sometime this year, since I always see so many cool things being made with it. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between Unreal and Cycles as well!

      @@ClassyDogStudios, counterintuitively, UE4 is easier to learn than Blender. It's less obtuse, like when it has it's default to not shade smooth, and not turn on the normal smoothing, for. each. obj. you. create. I come from Cinema 4D and ffs, that does not help at all.
      Shader/Material creation can get complex, or you can use it like everyone uses their phones: beginner level, and you'll still get good results. I think, e.g., equal to your comp. I think on Cinema settings, it would look even better in UE4 (!) As best as I understand it now, you would need to have created an HDRI of your comp scene.
      The Shader nodes for the most part are very similar to Blender's btw...and Blender is trying to become HoudiniFX...so it looks like everyone is converging to "best practice."
      As long as you export an FBX from Blender with the geo option to smooth on Face, UE4 won't groan, and then because I use Sub. Painter, it's pretty much the same from there...except: realtime, tons of effects you can't get from DCC packages in preview mode because you're system grinds to a halt (I only have a 1080ti, but my bro says it's a beast, then buys a 2080ti cause he has to make me jealous), and when you choose to render out a exr sequence (or PNG if you like the gamma error), it is no less beautiful than a REALLY long render in Blender, or my old C4D with Redshift that took 18hrs for every 3 seconds of "movie." The only difference, is I can render out Cinema quality stuff of a sequence for not much longer than one pic of the sequence if I was working in a DCC. I still don't understand it, and I'm thinking the DCCs are messing with us...
      UE4 is FREE, and it's NO WHERE like Unity, which is so constructed that after a couple months of trying to figure out how to use the camera system, I gave up for my machinima. In 2 weeks, I rendered my first shots in UE4. It's just constructed in a logical way (even though, yes there are small tick boxes, and such that if you don't see an experienced person use the software, (in a tutorial somewhere), you'd never consider, but that tends to be differences in polish than in function, i.e., in HoudiniFX, if you forgot one tick box, your whole sim may just not work.
      Do a couple of the free tutorials with the free starter assets, and LOOK at the quality of the materials, and lighting. EVERYTHING is lighting, and then materials, and UE4 _kills_ both.
      I'm still going back and forth between doing the same thing in Blender and UE4, just to verify it's not me, it's them... ;)

      Thanks for the helpful information, Jeff! I think I may try out Unreal soon in that case. I always see cool things being done with it, and it would be really nice to have another option when it comes to rendering things. And like you said, it can make some really fantastic looking renders despite taking hardly any time at all. Perhaps I'll pick a small project to recreate in Unreal, that would also give me a fun comparison of the differences between render engines.

      I understand, that is difficult. If you live near a library or know someone who will let you use their computer for a while, I believe you can still run Blender off a portable flash drive. Perhaps you can get a couple hours of practice each week that way.

      Hello! I was say, browse some projects other people have done and see if you can find anything that looks pretty simple, but also interests you. Even if it's just a super simple project, it will help you to start learning some of the basics of the program and you'll be able to decide what you're comfortable with. From there, you can decide if you want to try more advanced projects.

      I chose to use 2.79 for this project because I'm not completely comfortable yet with the new interface in 2.8+. For example, I didn't know how to set up the separate render passes I needed, though after seeing Jacob Holiday's video, now I know what to do. I plan to use the newer versions of Blender for videos soon!

    How you adjust the "scale" of the world when you camera track in ae and bring it to blender? I try to normalize the 3d scene in after effects using hashi's and Andrew kramer's techniques of parenting the camera and null to de origin solid e adjust the scale and rotation, but it seems that doesn't make any difference in blender so every time I'm importing the camera data in blender the camera seems too far distance and the models and scene became too small in the frame. How you fix that without messing with the original scale of your models? Btw, great tutorial! Thanks in advance!

    • @ClassyDogStudios
      @ClassyDogStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, Gutemberg! I would recommend doing is controlling all of that scaling on the Blender side of things, instead of trying to set scale inside After Effects (if I'm understanding you correctly). I'm actually not very familiar with AE2Blend, since I've only used it a handful of times over the past year, but I think there are a couple different things you could do.
      If you go to the product page for AE2blend and check out the second image showing the tools in the sidebar, you can see that you're able to adjust the scale of the imported data at the very top. It looks like it also has an option for specifying the distance between two markers (no idea how that works to be honest, lol). But another thing that you can do, which I'm pretty sure I have done in the past, is scale up the empty which the new camera is parented to when you paste your tracking data into Blender. And if you need to be very precise when doing this, you can also create nulls in AE for tracking markers that you want to match to your Blender scene. You're able to copy the location of those nulls and paste them into Blender as empties, which you could then use as measurement guide or even just general size/shape guide when you're scaling your tracked camera. I've done that as well, copying nulls in After Effects and pasting them as empties one at a time into Blender.
      I hope some of those ideas prove helpful, and if not, or if you have anymore questions, just let me know!

    • @MegaGutem
      @MegaGutem 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ClassyDogStudios Yeah, after commenting I realize that parenting the camera to an empty and adjusting the scale of the empty is the exact same technique as in after effects to adjust the world scale. So I tried and it works. Thank You for answering!

    how did u snap hdri image ground to worlds grid ?

    • @ClassyDogStudios
      @ClassyDogStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! In Blender, the HDRI is always centered in the viewport regardless of where the camera is. If you want to make your vehicle look like it's touching the ground, you'll need to make sure the ground plane you're using is in the right place. If it's too high or too low, then it will affect the illusion, so I would recommend practicing a little with where you place the ground plane to get a feel for where it should be. Ideally, your ground plane/mesh would have the same geometry as the ground in the HDRI map. Let me know if you still have questions!
