On reinstall tighten the pulley center bolt 🔩 to 70 ft the balancer on the crankshaft moved from compression stroke mark. Is that okay in order to get 70 ft Torque on center bolt 🔩? I hope you can respond to my question... Thanks...
Great instructional video without the unnecessary talking. Straight and to the point! Love it!
All these videos are by far the best automotive tutorials on TH-cam
Great video, just a couple of follow up notes:
-There is a very good chance that you will have to remove the first 6-8 oil pan bolts to get the cover out. It is rare that the cover comes out without doing this, as it seals to the oil pan.
-On the same subject, look at your oil pan gasket where it seals to the timing cover. A lot of these trucks have had their oil pan gasket replaced, and usually with a FelPro brand gasket. The FelPro gasket is one piece, and is quite thick where the oil pan seals to the timing cover. In this case, you would not want that massive bead of silicone in there. Just clean the one piece gasket very well with brake clean, and then put a decent sized spot of silicone on each corner of the timing cover where the oil pan lips seals to it.
-I would strongly recommend using red Loctite or the special locking fastener the aftermarket offers to keep the 3 cam gear bolts tight. Not necessary, but why take the chance of them loosening up.
-Use thread sealant or Teflon tape on all 4 water pump to block bolts, or they will leak.
-Lastly, you might change the chain only to find that the engine runs rough/doesn’t start, or the computer sets a P1345 Cam/crank correlation code. This can happen if the vehicle was retimed at any point while the chain was loose. If so you will need the engine retimed with a scan tool. Great video though, and good luck with your repairs everyone.

Hey there, good comments. I can't find any good videos on how to do the timing correctly with a timing light. Specifically where the dam cable is for the auto timing to the ecu, that needs to be disconnected first. Any suggestions or links you have would be awesome. Thank you. 1997 K1500 5.7l vortec
your videos are absolutely amazing with photography and description I really think that you'll video should be made for students in vocational schools while learning automotive like Lincoln tech and other schools absolutely amazing you are what you do
I agree, videos are great in a training situation. " A picture" is worth a million words. Back when I was in "Auto School" we found videos well worth the time.
when you put the water pump on make sure you put rtv silicone for anti freeze on the threads, as the bolts go into the water jacket
Nice step by step video! I'll be doing the same on my 96 Astro. 230K miles and not running to well per timing issues. I assume the chain must have some bad slack. Adding my 2 cents, I see you added a new water pump on the re-assembly. Loosening the bolts on the water pump pulley would probably been easier (for those who don't have an air ratchet or impact wrench) before taking off the serpentine belt. Also, the same for the crankshaft pulley as well. Cleaning the gasket residue around the water pump jackets and the timing chain on the block first would probably been easier before adding the new chain set. Other than that, awesome and most detailed video I've seen on youtube! Thanks!
+James Logue Thanks for watching. If any of our viewers needs to make this repair, we carry the auto repair part shown in this video on our website. Here is a link to them www.1aauto.com/timing-chain-set/i/1atbk00063?TH-cam&CTA+Comment&UeIe2Cgchs
Well, I just wish... I COULD DO THE JOB MYSELF! Who can pay $2500 dlls for this Job. My truck 98 Chevy Tahoe needs to pass emmisions inspections, because the stupid engine light is on and has been on for years. AND DOES NO HARM TO ANYONE! MY TRUCK RUNS JUST FINE! What the hell!!!!
Very good advise I was thinking same thing
You deserve appreciation and praise. It is an excellent channel. I really benefited from it
Check your torque specs! Timing cover is 6.75 ft-lbs not 18! (or 75 in-lbs). I figured that out after breaking off 2 screws in the block!
How did you fix? I had the same issue. I knew it seemed a lot tighter than they came off too.
Yeah I snapped 9ne of mine also. He also doesn't tell you that the oil pan gasket is one piece and you tear the part between the pan and timing cover when you pull it off. Now I gotta drop my oil pan to fix that. Mine is leaking right there.
Thank you for this excellent channel. It deserves all the appreciation. Excellent practical explanation and wonderful photography. This defect is found in my car GMC 1996 Sierra 1500. Thank you.
On removing the bolt on the crankshaft put a socket on bolt with a breaker bar against frame bump starter bolt comes loose it is threaded this way so it doesn't come loose while running.
Oil slinger ? You mean the relucter wheel that keeps the timing for the computer.
It may ! be for both
Oil slinger or reluctor wheel for crank position sensor?
I miss when this channel did actual repairs. Great video!!

Good video, thank you.
What was the torque on the three crank pulley bolts?
What was identified as an oil slinger, is the crank sensor reluctor ring.
Clean the timing cover gasket surface, and water pump gasket surface as soon as the timing chain and gears are removed or, prior to installing the timing chain/gears and timing cover. Makes it easier to access those surfaces without those items being installed.

Would’ve been great to know that it may leak if you don’t drop the oil pan front! Used a ton of RTV and it was a PITA to get in and still leaks which now means I need to drop the oil pan AGAIN! To finally get it to stop leaking!
🤦🏽♂️
Excellent How To Video!
Thanks For Sharing! 💪🏼
Replace the ignition switch module! My truck had the same issue. GM was having ignition switch problem way back in the 90's as well. Replace the ignition switch and the crank shaft sensor.
+tommy lopez Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com
You guys are amazing!! Deeply appreciated
Tried tightening the belt like this guy did on a 2001 gmc jimmy, pullies would still turn, finally broke down and got the actual tool at Advance auto, so much easier, ull need a 1 and 7/16 inch wrench and a tool that u take 2 bolts out of the pully behind the fan then instert the tool to hold that in place
Or just hold the pulley with a pry bar instead of even stretching out a otherwise good serpentine belt.
Also never pry on old hoses with pliers...use a pick and spray a little silicon. Will come right off easy
Also when turing a engine by hand...remove your spark plugs this way your not fighting so much compression.
+Anderson Auto Help Thanks for the feedback!
I broke a timing cover bolt while torquing to 18 ft-lbs. Make sure to double check the torque specs for your vehicle. After doing my research I found the torque spec for my timing cover listed as 106 in-lbs or about 8 ft-lbs. I have a 99 K1500 Suburban
+1. I also broke a bolt and had to drill it out. Chilton's recommends torquing to 100 inch pounds, or 8.3 foot pounds.
How long did it take you to do a job like this?
you need to always use a measure of common sense when working on cars, trucks etc.a timing or valve cover or oil pan/trans pan isnt a structural or combustion sealing item so it will always be in low inch pound increments or tighten to tight plus an 1/8 to 1/4 turn
Lock tight ? For timing cover bolt?
Great video. Except for the part where he says torque the timing cover bolts to 18 ft. lbs. I just broke a bolt in my block. The correct torque is 106 inch pounds. Very frustrating.
I usually replace the balacer at this time also, when fixing the cover, install the balancer enough to centre itself in the seal, secure the timing cover bolts you can reach, then pull the damper off again to alpply final torque to timing chain cover - it is sometimes necessary to test the crank pos sensor clearance toshaft as the cover may be shifted slightly from centring seal to shaft. Spacers can be added to sensor to increase clearance.
Thanks a ton for this video. I should tell you that I tried to buy the timing chain (or cover, I can't remember) from you and
you are out of stock. Funny. I'm originally from Hopkinton. Keep the good videos coming.
hell yea , mo fo's ... this vid was a life saver... im ordering from 1a now
+Roland rollins Thank you for your order. If you would like to leave us a review on Google it would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to our reviews section. Have a great day! goo.gl/i5JFNY
FYI when you put the cover on it doesn't actually slide in like it looks like it does that's why you have to put so much rtv on. Found this out the hard way.
+Tyler Elliott Thanks for the tip!
Do you need to remove the oil pan first
When you turn your crankshaft this way do you ever risk breaking your crank pulley screw that you used?
+Scott Box Not typically, as long as you follow the directions in this video you shouldn't have any problems! 1aauto.com
Guy cleaned the housing after putting the new chain on. Guess hes trying to grease the new chain with the old sludge. 😂
Just wondering why in the list of what you need does the new chain have to be from 1a auto?
Best damn informational video I've ever seen. Great job dude 😎

Old video....solid video
Is it better to heat crank sprocket for install or using the tool shown?
NO, it does not slide on that tight, just clean the crank nose a little with sandpaper or cloth and it will slide on.
When I took off the cover on the oil pan side there was a plastic seal that fell apart. Will just the gasket sealer work or do I need to replace that plastic front main seal part?
a little late but rule of thumb I've been taught I'd is a if you take a component that has a gasket replace it. The cover should be ok unless you notice a crack. Gasket sealer was place at the bottom to reinforce where oil will sit the most
Awesome video! Eagerly awaiting the oil pan gasket replacement video for this model of truck.
+Etcetera Leatherworks We're always cycling through common cars. We'll add this repair to our list! 1AAuto.com
Like your vid’s but I’d like to note that on TDC of the #1 compression stroke the cam reference mark is at the 12 o’clock position. Unconventional in my experience but everything starts with the engine set at the TDC of the compression stroke on #1 cylinder.
thank you, that was the best video I have EVER watched for doing this. I was told there is 2 differant timing chains for my 97 GMC Sierra 1500 truck, it;s got a 5.7 V8 motor. they told me They needed to know what timing chain it was. So I need to take it off to show them what one it is? Is this true?
8 digit of the VIN assuming it is a 5.7 then:
If the 8th digit is R then you have .280" Tooth Width Sprocket
You are correct..there are two different types one being a roller chain with .280" width sprockets or the inverted tooth chain with .400" width..my '97 Vortec 350 VIN R has the latter.
Don't they use gasket glue any more? Also silicone always shrinks later been many years in silicone better now i had bad luck with this trying to use it as a gasket replacement.
U made this look so simple and easy
TDC compression stroke number 1 cylinder : both cam and crank marks are at 12 o'clock position.
Is this correct? Sure seems like it! Because I'm at this very point and my rotor is at the #1 cylinder when both are pointing at 12 o'clock position!
@@johnathanlivings8540 yes it is correct. When dots are at 12 and 6, (dot-to-dot) that is actually number 6 top dead center. Edelbrock techline confirmed this for me and it was correct when I started the engine.
How long it takes to do this job?
i replaced mine, it dosnt leak at idle or reving the gas, but on the road i have a leak, i used a whole tube of sealer, whats the issue? clean it and apply more sealer to see if it stops?
I noticed you didn't mess with the distributor, do I need to setine 180 out cause I changed my chain and distributor
Was this Truck throwing a p1345 code before the timing chain and sprockets were replaced?
Hello. I used your torque specs on my timing cover which you stated in video 18ft pounds and I broke 2 bolts off instead the block. The correct torque is 6.5 ft pounds. Not very happy. I will from now on just look up torque specs
How do you replace the keyway on the crankshaft in a 97 GMC suburban 5.7 leater
my 4.3 has a geared ballance shaft , how are the dot's lining up
How do you know if it is a non interference motor if it's been rebuilt
would this video and steps also apply to 88-94 Silverado
I'm putting the head's and intake&all the accessories off the off my 95 throttle body on the block of my 97 Vortec do I need the oil Slinger
I put the change and its feell lose in both sides feel the same like the old one i buy this truck a week ago and i try to replace the timing change and i dont know if the rigth part
One time use on timing cover for 6.5?
Great video
wish this was for the 4.3 L vortec, looks very close to it,but I've seen some that require the oil pan to drop out of the way!
You should do one for a 5.3L silverado/Sierra that would be so awesome! I love your videos.
+Marcus Blanco Thanks for watching. Have a great day!
Oil slinger? I thought that brass plate was the reflector gear for the crank sensor....
Timing cover torque specs say 7ft lb not 18. I broke a bolt at 18
How did you get it out
This is not the first time this set has been changed the original set was a dubble row chain and I had to drop the pan , if you use the factory type of plastic cover you can use the better set of gears of you use the Holley aluminum cover with a replable seal
You need a thin set like this one or single row chain. I do mine a little different I take a old dampener and cut the shaft off and use it to aline the cover ( seal ) with the crank but pan needs to be lowered but I don't have leaks something you would have to remove the alinement pins . If you have very high mileage put a new dampener on at this time.
+good guy Thanks for the feedback!
So I got one I have a 98 k1500 Chevy my baby but original motor 215 thousand got a tick or I thought it was adjust timeing advance dimed it down I get new battery put in then listen to front where pulley are in front motor and heard the tick their is it ever heard of time chain slapping around and almost like a lifter tick but on front of motor help me if can ?
On a 350 we were looking.at to buy it sounded like a knock I was worried dad sprayed wd 40 on the belt and it went away.Worth a try don't remember if it was a pulley or belt.
Very Good Video, Very Informative!!!

I understand you guys have to sell your parts to make a living like we all do, but you should warn that this replacement IS COMPLICATED and should-work very careful not to damage the crankshaft’s threads. You make it so easy to replace. GUYS IS NOT SO EASY, PLEASE BE VERY BE CAREFUL. This video they made easy with only purpose of selling you the parts.

Great job!
How do i know when it bottoms out. Will just turning? I dont want to ruin anythin as it gets tighter and tighter
Would this be the same process for a 5.3 vortec? 99 Sierra Z71
did you have to pull the spark plugs to do this?
+Stephen Hardaway Thanks for watching! No you do not need to pull the spark plugs to perform this procedure.
Hello, will this be similar to a 1994 Chevy 5.7L?
+Jody Castro This procedure might be different for your application. We do not currently have a how-to video for this particular year, make and model. Thank you for asking! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c

I looking for some help to how to change a timeing Cain on a 2000 Lincoln LS with a V8
Is it a vortec 350?
Yes 5.7L
Enjoyed the video, but I can do without music in the background. I do not know why everyone thinks you must have music with a video, such as RTV ( thread sealer) on threads going into a water jacket and I was wondering about the "oil slinger". Thanks for the list of items needed for the change.
+James Smejkal Thanks for the feedback!
Hello. It isn't an oil slinger. The part he decribes as one is actually the Crank Position Trigger Ring. It is what the cover-mounted Crank Position Sensor uses to create a reference signal to the ECM.
Can this prevent my vehicle from running totally?
+Benjimin Bliss We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, but you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
This does not comply to a normal 5.7 chevy, only the vortec
Is this similar on a 4.3 vortec?
+Brandon Wilkinson It may be a different procedure on that vehicle. 1aauto.com
There's two different size chains for a L31 vortec which one do I choose??
+willy Jilly We do not have any information on the correct size for your vehicle but your dealership should be able to tell based off of your VIN.
Soooo i dont need to take the oil pan off?
+Dawson Scruggs Thanks for watching! No you do not need to take off the oil pan if you are performing this repair for this vehicle.
MUCH EASIER TO CLEAN THE AREA WHERE THE GASKET GOES WITHOUT THE GEARS AND CHAIN IN PLACE, NO ?
17:40 question?? A1auto .... So I can make my own gasket sealer for the bottom timing cover? Because I have this thick rubber gasket where you have to drop the oil pan some just to install the timing cover for the bottom rubber u shape gasket to fix properly. What's the name of that oil gasket sealer brand or name?
+Darren Stevens You will want to create your own gasket/seal for that part of the installation. That is just an oil-safe gasket maker that can be found at any local auto part store! 1aauto.com
That's the crankshaft sensor reluctor wheel, not an oil slinger.
followed the video and have no spark what could the reason be ?
