    I love the Red Control app. I recently bought a portkeys bm5-wr monitor, but after testing it for a few days, I actually prefer using my iPhone as a monitor. Because the portkeys only allows to control a few variables and you still have to go to the cameras little tiny screen on top, so if I need both my iPhone and a monitor, I'd rather have a 7-inch monitor that's bigger even if it doesn't have camera control, and then leave the phone always attached to the camera for all the other critical controls.

    The killer feature for me is the app's ability to control playback. It's by far the most robust way to review clips, sort through them, scrub. 1000x easier than doing the same with the on-camera controls.

    • @willvazquez3218
      @willvazquez3218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but the really super badass killer feature is the ability to have audio on playback on the app. The Sony FX6 and FX3 apps cannot play audio through the app. Komodo is badass all the way. Now that I own it, I understand the cult. haha.

    Great video Carlos 😊 I love the Komodo app as well. I often give my clients my I pad on set as a Client monitor using the app (of course I have my controls locked then ;) )
    My T & E is always green after I did the calibration. I used it in -15 degrees in the Snow for a entire day and at 35 degrees on a very warm day and had no issues. I‘ld suggest reaching out to Red.

    • @carlosq00
      @carlosq00  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      if I recalibrate when the T goes red, i can hold green through the rest of the project...so I am thinking that because I calibrate and move about to different setups, may be the reason why I need multiple calibrations during a shoot.

    make sure you are not in middle of nowhere with Red Komodo, I have been shooting a doc in wilderness and used the iphone as the app will have lot of frame drops, it's like you are viewing your footage at 10FPS vs. 24 or 60 etc... you need a proper SDI monitor to make sure you see the smooth footage.

    For those using focus motors I recommend the metabones t cine reducer (locks like PL) and the kondor blue bottom plate with the universal adapter (it takes a 1/4-20 stainless washer in between the adapter and the reducer, and you're set). That would give a solid cinema setup. The reducer would be anchored both in the RF mount and the Kondor base via a 1/4-20 bolt, and it would be as if it were built in the chassis of the camera. Then the locking mechanism does the rest.

    My T gets green fast Carlos. You might have an issue, talk with RED tech. My komodo had another issue fyi; you know how the core plate is said to disconnect? It's the left battery bay (where core has its link). I would wiggle a red battery up and down and the camera would reboot. I sent it in under warranty, got it fixed - they changed a power board circuit. Now it works fine.

    I’m thinking something is wrong with your Komodo. I almost never need to black shade my Komodo in the studio. Even between shooting days. The only time I black shade is if there temperature changes significantly.
    As for the Red Control app; It works well if you are on 5GHz. Other than that, it can be laggy with frequent freezes.
    In studio I generally monitor on an external panel. I love the app for when I need to travel light.
    Pro tip: if you want to pack really light, use Leica M glass and the Canon type batteries.

    How’s the noise at ISO 800? I’ve seen examples of Komodo that were quite noisy. Regarding the sensor latitude, if you were to theoretically over expose by a stop at ISO 800 and then pull it back to 400 in post, would the shadows be cleaner? I suppose I could test that with my dragon, but Komodo just seems to have a little less latitude and more noise than even the older dragon sensor…maybe due to the global shutter.

    • @carlosq00
      @carlosq00  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      so what I've been doing when I need clean shadows is to expose for a lower ISO and it works well. I'll upload some clips. The only problem is that highlight protection takes a hit at lower ISO values.

    • @loudandclearmedia
      @loudandclearmedia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carlosq00 Yeah, the highlights were one of the things I was thinking about by suggesting to over expose at 800 and then pull it back in post. I'll tell you what's helpful...Blackmagic has a chart for each of their cameras specifying how many stops over and under the camera is capable of at any given ISO. I've not seen any such chart from RED, and to make matters worse their language on the subject has always been quite nebulous. I've seen them answer the native ISO question several times with "well, that's not how it work's. ISO is just an assigned value within the R3D file...blah blah blah."

    • @carlosq00
