    re: Hostage Taker: The ability to play the permanent is part of the ETB ability that exiled the permanent, so Taker losing that ability is irrelevant because the ability already triggered. Similarly, if you had removed the Taker, you would have gotten back the Map as it's all part of the same triggered ability.

    Hostage Taker has only 1 ability. It's a triggered ability that creates a continuous effect when it resolves, and that effect lasts until the permanent it came from leaves the battlefield. The "you may cast" thing is part of the effect.
    Overwhelming Splendor removes abilities, but it does not remove effects they have already created.

  • @notorioezz
    @notorioezz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +79

    Overwhelming Splendor takes away the ability, but not the fact it's a Hostage Taker.
    You can cast cards exiled with Hostage Taker. So the card allready got exiled, therefor you can cast it even if Hostage Taker lost it's ability.

    • @obesechicken13
      @obesechicken13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Are you a judge? That part sounds like the card's ability.

    • @pageofvoid6881
      @pageofvoid6881 6 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      Nowhere on Hostage Taker does it say "You can cast cards exiled with Hostage Taker". If it did, you would NOT be able to cast the exiled card once Hostage Taker loses its abilities.
      The reason you can cast the exiled card even while Hostage Taker has no abilities is that Hostage Taker has the text "You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled" as part of the triggered ability that exiles the card. Therefore, the ability to cast that card is not a static ability of Hostage Taker, but is instead linked to the triggered ability which has already resolved.

    • @notorioezz
      @notorioezz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I never said that 'you can cast cards with Hostage Taker' was actually on the card. Relax there buddy. You just said it better, but I ment exactly the same.

    • @obesechicken13
      @obesechicken13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not being hostile. To me it wasn't clear that it wasn't a static ability. After all you can't cast the card if hostage taker is removed.

    Game 2: Is there a reason not to just slam Ixalan's Bindings on Nezahl? They are basically a Mind Rot and fog because they stun Nezahl and make your opponent discard slightly more than they draw.
    If you were holding it as an answer to Scarab God, you should have topped at 26:51 and used the spare to bounce Nezahl and force a discard. That leaves you more resistant to removal and time walks for a turn because they tap out to cast Nezahl.

    • @tomjackal5708

    A nice little piece of tech to do when an enemy has a Gonti on the field: whenever you are searching your library via Evolving Wilds or any other card, you can skim through your entire deck through MTGO pretty easily. If you have your decklist open in another tab or you just memorized what you brought in from the sideboard, you can easily deduce what they took. In game 2 against U/B control, the Gonti took one of your Sifter Wurms. You could have guessed it perfectly just by seeing the first still in your deck and the second in your graveyard. That leaves the third Wurm to be under Gonti's control. Not something that comes up a lot but it can provide useful in certain situations. A little scummy but it's not against the rules or anything.

    • @MTGGoldfish

    • @sasukekuniski1959
      @sasukekuniski1959 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      how is it scummy? its your own cards and deck. if you have a search ability and you search for a 1 of,and they took it,its not your fault you know what they took cause you only have that 1 card. scummy is 100% incorrect word

    I've always wanted to see somebody make a Standard deck that uses Aid From the Cowl to good effect. This is pretty sweet. Nice and janky and really fun when it works. Also helps that your opponents generally have no idea what you're doing.

    Unbridled growth does work for this deck, replace the renegade maps and you gain card draw from your ralliers, you'll also need a manasink for the later turns so I suggest 2 of both deserts even if they aren't the most effective in your deck and even if it takes the budget thing out.

    The ruling for the hostage taker is similar to gonti’s in that as long as the card is still in exile, but takers case it has to be alive, you can cast it. Even though it’s a one one it still is hostage taker.

  • @Lantalia
    @Lantalia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The abilities on Hostage Taker don't matter after it has exiled something, as the conditions are attached to the card in exile

  • @Kaowaul
    @Kaowaul 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The ability to cast the card exiled by Hostage Taker is part of it's ETB ability, and is not a static ability. The ETB ability has no duration, only a condition. Being able to cast the exiled card is not a separate ability but part of an ability that has already resolved.

    So etiquette question: In the match vs UW Auras Seth correctly noted that the opponent could have won the game by sacrificing Siren Stormtamer. Is it ever acceptable to point out to your opponent when they make misplays (obvious or otherwise) like that one, or is that considered rude and unwarranted in every situation? I tend to lean towards the latter, but then again experience is our best teacher and that realization could help the opponent become a better player going forward. What say you?

    The deck is really interesting and I think there's something here but I don't believe it's the revolt package. Both Overwhleming Splendor as well as Sandwurm Convergence are such massive game enders that I think setting up a ramp package with some interaction and taking advantage of Wayward Swordtooth to just spit lands onto the battlefield quickly might work better. Take out all the revolt cards and enablers and maybe Wurms and Splendors can just carry us to victory!

    10:24 you missplayed grabbing evolving wilds rather than renegade map. As renegade map guarantees an untapped land and revolts.

    First instinct while watching the decktech: "20 lands?? Play at least 22 and cut a couple of those Traveler's Amulets"

      They're necessary for Revolt triggers and they basically count as a land, same with renegade map

      technically the artifacts are addittional lands. if I'm playing mana "rocks", then I too minimize lands and mana screw is not really a thing...

    • @lucasenraraujo
      @lucasenraraujo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      claudio pulento the artifacts do help, but they're not proper lands. In the very last match Seth had trouble finding lands and I honestly expected that to happen a lot in a 20 land deck, that's why I suggested playing 22, which is still a low number but it would make me more comfortable piloting the deck.
      Consider if you need a land for the turn and you draw a Renegade Map or even a Traveler's Amulet when you are behind. And those are different than mana rocks since they remove lands from the deck, reducing even further the chances of drawing a land next turn...

    I don't think saving 2 points of damage is worth giving the opponent 4 extra cards when you're at 13 and have caracel in hand. Just got to 6-8. You can climb back out out of burn range.

      Yeah, I've been meaning to check into that, it felt weird to me that they could still cast the Treasure Map, but it could be right according to the rules.

  • @ComradeArthur
    @ComradeArthur 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Ixalan's binding *is* useful against Nezhal. You cast it, opponent bounces and has to recast. Buys you some time. And, cast the 2nd one, opponent might run out of cards.
    --------
    Around 38m you were desperate for a Fumigate and you played a forest instead of Evolving Wilds. The Wilds would have let you thin you deck by 1 - making the fumigate a bit more likely.

    • @notorioezz
      @notorioezz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Uhm, Nezahal doesn't bounce, therefor your don't recast it, it just ETB's back from exile. I think opponent was f6 due to time and so he simply skipped the ability to activate Nezahal.

    • @melissagrenier2200
      @melissagrenier2200 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did Seth previously scry non-fumigate cards to the bottom? I have to rewatch it to answer that. If the answer is yes then cracking the wilds could actually decrease his chance of hitting fumigate.
