    Wow. Thank you for addressing this. Ground fighting and standing fighting are indeed different. In wrestling, we used to have an expression,"Taking things to the mat." Implying that if you want to get hardcore you take the fight to the ground. Other folks will tell you that in a fight you want to stay mobile-and thus don't want to confine yourself to the ground. Boxing was the predominant street defense for a long time because of this reason. I myself think you need to be prepared for EVERYTHING in a fight. Never limit yourself to one style and keep an open mind! Congratulations on 10,000 subscribers brother. Until next time...

    That is a pretty cool that Geo was from Kyoto I didn't know that. I think that the idea of BJJ having become it's own system, with an increased focus on the ground can be linked to a couple of factors. One of those factors is the lack of influence from the Kodokan. Since BJJ was left in a vacuum of it's own it developed in a different direction from judo. BJJ in the sportive context was originally BJJ vs Luta Romana (greco wrestling), vs Capoeira, then it progressed into being used for Vale Tudo and the fights/grappling matches against Luta Livre. Whereas at the same time Judo was becoming more organized into what would be an olympic sport, and much less used for prize fighting as that space gave way to the catch wrestling scene in Japan. I think that it is fair to say that while Judo had given a foundation for BJJ past Geo Omori, the link with the Kodokan becomes far more tenuous if not completely disconnected. I think this hyper specialization was necessary for a time in order to gain a greater generalized baseline for grappling and later MMA. When i first came into bjj Berimbolos were all the rage, then it moved to leg locks, I think the next grappling arms race has already started with BJJ's renewed interest in takedowns from both judo and wrestling. I think that given the performances in the last olympics in Judo there is a new arms race occurring in the IJF centered around newaza. I do think that it'd be cool to do a mixed rules set to bring all grappling styles together. Anyway sorry for the rant. Congrats on 10k subscribers and love the videos man, the perfect length for the commute to work.

    If you are able to make a Japan trip, I would also suggest you check out the Osaka branch of the Kodokan, Osaka, being very close to Kyoto it wouldn't be too far out of your way. My wife and I went to the Kansai for the cherry blossom viewing a few years back. We stayed in Osaka and traveled to Kyoto, Nara, and Mt. Yoshino. So just one more bit of advice: get the Kansai Thru Pass, it lets you travel on non JR trains, buses, and subways throuout the Kansai Reigion. (Best way from Osaka to Kyoto is the Keihan Line. I was an exchange student at Ryukoku University so I traveled on it a lot)

    Amazing analysis as always Chadi I am so glad that there are people like you who goes into depth about the real history behind judo and Bjj, it seems like everyone today even smart people like Joe Rogan don’t look into the real history and just accepts what they hear from the Gracie side of the story. I think the Gracie’s are amazing fighters and that they contributed a lot to the martial arts world but you are not a Gracie hater just because you states facts and I obvious lies from their side I think that you have an obligation as a martial artist to respect the origins of your art.

    An interesting piece of early BJJ history is also how the Luiz Franca lineage apparently adopted footlocks and leglocks compared to the Gracies whose early style focused more on attacking the upper limbs and chokes. Now I'm not sure who Luiz Franca credited as his primary instructor. I think it was Geo Omori.
    But it really is interesting how even early BJJ styles differed depending on the teacher/student relationship and which judoka from Japan was teaching the techniques.
    Today, the individual styles of BJJ seem to be disappearing as new techniques are created everyday by someone and shared on social media like TH-cam.
    My question is will sport judo ever experience a renaissance where, due to the immense popularity of BJJ and MMA, they will start changing the competition rules so that newaza techniques become more relevant than just the myopic focus on the ippon?

    Take it from someone who’s been there & done that... You may be disappointed by your Japan pilgrimage... there are no answers hiding there. You will find pockets of dedicated folks, training hard and piecing together remnants of distant memories of what once was or “may have been” in the minds of martial artist idealists, mixed with hobbyists and regular classes filled with people only half-there lead by instructors using fairly standard training methods. Occasionally you might come across a new technique or two but the real secret is that hard-work part, and whether you can keep yourself in that select group for life and continuously learn:improve or give in to the inner lazy voice & complacent tendency that modern conveniences drive humanity towards seems to be the real secret.
    You’re already doing the work, good luck to you to keep it up!

    The Gracies favored the ground because in a one vs one, unarmed, duel being skilled at newaza ground grappling gives one an exponential advantage over anyone unskilled in newaza submission grappling. But Judo was still rooted in military mentality of quickly taking down the opposition hard and shanking them with a dagger or short sword. Or breaking their limb and taking them captive. On a battlefield BJJ newaza is suicide. In unarmed, one vs one duel, BJJ shines.
    In the Army, we have Gracie Jiujitsu Combatives, I had an Infantry brother in 1997, (Pvt Welch) a Gracie BJJ Purple belt from Boston, got into fight with a bully, a folk wrestler, (Pvt Creech) and my buddy Welch had Creech's back, rear choke with hooks in, Creech was going unconscious when his buddies rushed up, someone had ran to get them, and they began stomping & futbal kicking my buddy Pvt. Welch in his head & neck. Me, Pvt Washington, Pvt Gonzalez and Pvt. Zack Boyer tried to drive them back, but they were able to get in quick stomps & futbal kicks to my buddy's head and neck. Pvt. Welch suffered traumatic brain injury, he wasn't ever same after that fight. That fight, I witnessed, changed my mind forever and I didn't pursue Gracie BJJ any further than Combatives Ground Escapes to get to my feet off the ground. Years later I went to prison for self defense and not once did I ever want to use Gracie Combatives Newaza in a prison fight. Going to the ground in prison would be suicide. I relied mostly western boxing & judo in prison. One vs One challenge Duels like vale tudo & ufc don't reflect real life self defense like I encountered in prison nor encountered growing up around violent gangs. Every fight I ever survived or personally witnessed never remained one vs one. And in prison very few were unarmed. BJJ is best in one vs one duel. Not so great in street attack, prison fight or where fights don't remain one vs one.

    • @ernestlaw423
      @ernestlaw423 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's real life experience! I agree with you that Gracie Combatives ground escape + striking and some throwing is better than just bjj in a street fight.

    • @lambosnicko
      @lambosnicko 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thats like saying i dont want to learn striking anymore because i was boxing with a guy and 3 guys came and beat me up so now im not gonna use striking anymore. Your comment makes no sense. Doesnt matter if you’re on the ground or not you have to be ready to deal with someone else interfering in a fight at any time.

    It's make a lot of sense. Brazil has the largest Japanese migrant community, and martial masters came from all walk of life. Some with tokui waza in Tachi and some would prefer Ne-Waza, some were pro empire of Japan and some probably were exile. Since it was in the early day of Judo movement, and I just wonder if some Jiu-Jitsu masters had migrated to Brazil early on or later but chose not to be under Kano's banner for various reasons and had continued on with the old Jiu-Jitsu tradition.
    Also, I am curious of the age and size of old Judo masters who favored Ne-Waza. From my personal experience in training and competing in both Judo and BJJ, as I am getting older, I am not as fast as I used to be and my body is falling apart, I would absolutely have no chance standing up against bigger and younger Judo-Ka/wrestler who trains full time. The best strategy for me would be just taking the thrown and land in a better position to take the back or pulling guard and slow my opponent down before going for submission. BJJ rule is designed to do just that, no throwing Ippon, no Osaekomi, no immediate Shido and a longer round. Judo-ka and wrestler are 100-meter sprinter, and BJJ practitioner is a marathon runner.

    Brazilians favour the ground because it was shown to be highly effective in vale tudo matches. Brazilians favour the ground because sport bjj rule set awards more points for ground and submissions happen on ground. The argument is built on false premise. My understanding was that Maeda left Japan a few years prior to the onset of the Kosen school starting to operate under their rules, and that Kano was not a fan of the manner in which Kosen was doing things. That would seem to suggest more of a parallel development than a direct translation of Kosen to Brazil.

    • @Kitajima2
      @Kitajima2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think "parallel development" is the most accurate way to describe this. That phrase is used in situations like Newton and Liebniz both discovering calculus at the same time independently of each other, or comedians who use the same joke structure on accident. It's really hard to make the argument that BJJ didn't stem from the Japanese Diaspora to Brazil

    Mastering throwing techniques to the point to be able to throw opponents to the ground efficiently takes much more skills that learning submissions for the same purpose. It’s easiest to apply a choke to a person than it is to effectively throw a person with a clean ippon. Japanese judokas start training by the time they start walking basically, the gracies where already mature adults when they started training, so in my opinion even if they have tried they were not gonna be able to attain the level of proficiency needed for the standing game. I think that’s the simple plain answer..an old guy can train jujitsu and Learn enough to defend himself, an old guy can’t even think about practicing judo, lol, just thinking about it will hurt, lol. The newaza is more forgiving than the standing aspect of the art...the fight of Gracie with Kimura and even the fight he won’t with the other Japanese guy, you can tell he was completely dominated when standing but things got more even when the fight went to the floor..I want to clarify that I am not referring to the development of the jujitsu flow which takes years to develop, just to the learning of newaza techniques to the point of being efficient against a non trained opponent..
