Omg thank you so much Ronda for posting this, it’s revolutionized my punching!! I’m using the oxford punch needle and much fatter yarn, but your tip for sideways punching (saving me from using my left hand) and making a loop to change rows which you cut later have sped this up and made it much more enjoyable! Rug punching GOLD this is :))).
This is the best instruction video I have watched! I have had my tail thread coming from the back and turning my work constantly...very annoying! I am only on my 2nd project, but I wondered why mine doesn't look as neat as others I see...now I will be trying your technique! Your work is beautiful! Thank you for the info!
I have never come across this craft before, I watched another video and thought "why would anyone in their senses want to make that?" But seeing what you have achieved explains why! Very nice result.
I just ordered a little starter set of coasters that look like orange slices and avocado's. Your video was very helpful. I wouldn't have thought about the pattern w/in the pattern or what you explained as movement. Thank you. I am going to save this video to rewatch!
Hi , I just come across your video , thank you for all your tips !! I was trying to follow , but I wish it was more of a close up so I could see more of what you were teaching , Thank you very much again ,
Ronda, THANK YOU for this video! I am fairly new to punch needle and have been all worried about the "never turn your needle, always turn your work." And I have been doing what I see you do. I am so relieved a pro is showing me this. BTW, your work is gorgeous!!
@samweddell the fabric used is a tight woven weavers cloth and it is the fabric itself that secures the threads/loops. Make sure your thread flows freely through the needle, and try not lifting the needle any higher than what allows you to drag/slide to the next punch, also make sure that your fabric is drum tight. Hope this helps. thank you for your question.
That is soooo pretty! I would love to see the front of the work! I myself have just started off with needle punching and it didn´t look very good, this video had a lot of theory in it. I am going to try again, using this wisdom! Thank you!
Hi Ronda, Thanks for your tutorial. You mention watching videos of someone that sounds like Laurie Brechan. I'm wondering who this is and how I may locate her videos for my own learning? I can't seem to find her on youtube. THankyou.
Great video tutorial! Are you punching on Linen or Weavers cloth? If Linen, What count is it or does it matter? Also is that embroidery floss like DMC or another brand. New to needle punching. Beautiful project you are working on. Thanks, Judy
Linda,🙋♀️ just came upon your channel. Lovely work. Hope you're not sick of this question but I'd like to punch needle on jeans. Do you think this could be done using a small hoop. Also, what kind of thread do you use. I have old DSM, but if there are other kinds you recommend as well??? Thank you Linda, you're a really good teacher.👍🙂
Very helpful tips! One suggestion.... using a dark thread on the light fabric would makes it easier to see for illustration purposes. Gonna try punching sideways today!!!
Wow wow thank you..I am just starting and this was my tenth video and finally one that makes sense and really works. Thank you for the great explanation to free ,fun punching..
Thank you! Yes I am still making videos, this one happens to be my most watched, I surely hope it has helped others learn and love the art of punch needle.❤
hi Paula, make sure you are allowing the thread to flow smoothly thru the needle, don't lift the needle any higher off of the fabric than required to slide the needle forward.
I'd like to know what form you are using to hold your material in place, also what type of material do you use? I'm very new to this so I have no clue what to buy. Thanks.
hi Ronda I was wondering if you were going to be making more punch embroidery videos and maybe make them longer I love watching you punch thanks for sharing brightest blessings
Hello again! .. I do hope to punching again soon. Will try to do another video! .. my phone makes it hard to do very long ones due to memory space, I think the last one was 3 or 4 videos I had to put together. Thanks for visiting again.
Great video. Love the tips! Can I see the front of your work? I am getting tired of having to split threads to 3 strands and would like to try 6 but wonder how it looks. Also, what size tip are you using on the punch needle? Thanks!
Jazzy Glass Gems I use 6 strands and setting 1 with medium size needle. Please see example here plus.google.com/+RondaTedder/posts/Kd6Tmbnqxk1 thanks for visiting and reaching out
Thanks for watching!! I really do not think so, the threads are only held by the weave of the fabric, the fabric locks in the loop, even with a thread ran through the back, the loops will still pull out. Any securing with thread would have to be done on the front side, iside each loop , which would not be feasible.
Do you always use all six strands together? I have the same punch needle that you have. Mine came with all three needles but the smallest one was broken.
Hi Ronda! Your tutorials are really helpful. I am quite literally a novice and until today did not know how to thread a punching needle. I just have a quick question - I kinda noticed that there is no mechanism to hold the thread to the fabric, and the whole work might easily come apart with a slight tug. Does that mean it isn't possible to embroider a handkerchief (or something frequently usable) using this technique?
how do you prevent the stitches from pulling out since they are just loops and not locked on the wrong side? I'm thinking about this being done on a garment or a bag where there is a danger of it being snagged, or even when laundered.
How is thread fix on cloths.....it lokk like it untie easily from the cloth.....when we punch needle in to the cloth, what happens back side to prevent removal of thread from the same punch hole???
This is called a gripper frame, I have bought mine from Nistock Farms, you stretch your fabric over the frame, the grippers are sharp and will keep the material drum tight much better than an embroidery hoop. The tighter stretched your fabric is the easier punching goes. Hope this helps. Go to Etsy or Ebay and search for needle punch or rug hooking gripper frames. You can also visit the Nistock Farms website, they are reasonable and very well made, even made me a custom size.
Hi I am new to punch needle, I purchased the needle, dmc floss and weaver cloth but every time I try the stitches will not stay in the fabric please help. Very frustrated.
can i ask, how do you secure the thread? i'm new to this kind of embroidery, but when ever i'm trying the thread come back out and i get these loose loops on the back ?
I am really enjoyed watching your videos. From what I observe, it appears that this isn't something to do for dish towels, because it appears that it could come unraveled easily. Is that true, or could I do dish towels using this tool?

I appreciate what you’re saying, but it is so difficult to actually see what you are doing. There are shadows and the camera needs to get closer to your needle. I would love to see you do another video with these changes because I feel like you’re techniques are better than most. I can’t see the bevel on your needle to really understand what direction you are using. Thank you so much.

Helen Beebe hi Helen. That is correct. What you are seeing in this video is the back side. I have been seeing that people are doing punch needle with yarn and choosing the back side as the finished side. With the yarn it looks quite nice. Thanks for visiting!

Carole Halsey hi Carole! Yes in punchneedle the finished side is the other side of your work. The numbers are for adjusting the length if the loops.
How do you keep the loops from coming undone?

After six minutes, I gave up trying to figure out how the stitch locks itself on the bottom.
It is the close weave of the fabric that holds the loops.
