    A video all about which fabric you should and can use with different punch needles. There seems to be a lot of confusion about which fabric is suitable for punch needle. In this tutorial I take you through my own journey with this subject and explore the options of 6 different fabrics, like linen scrim, monk's cloth, Panama cotton, burlap, cheesecloth and a regular linen.

    1-Cheese Cloth (easily breaks)
    2- Burlap (cheaper than monks cloth, good with bigger needle, not good with smaller needle)
    3-Monks Cloth (good for big and small needle, *Best)
    4-Panama Cotton (same as monks cloth, a bit more dense)
    5-Linen Scrim (breaks easily)
    6-Linen (hard to punch for bigger needle, ok for smaller needles)

    I used "unsuitable" material in multilayer (2 or 3 layers) with success. Sometimes I mix them: a good holding layer, and on top something I want to show at the end. This approach normally works out pretty well too. You don't need to sew the layers together, the embroidery will hold them together very well.

    I use Panama cotton in cross stitch and there are several densities you can try if the smaller one is difficult for you to punch through. If you ask your supplier, you can ask if they carry the diferent densities and get samples to see which one works better with each needle.

    i found aida unsuitable. It breaks easily and is harder to tense. In punch needle the fabric needs to be tense as a drum skin, and I found that difficult to achieve with aida. I use monk's cloth and chunky microfibre yarn (such as chenille). It's fast, and makes rugs that are incredibly soft and durable. Not even our house panther can destroy these rugs, and they are easy to keep clean.

    Would it be possible to use a thicker embroidery cotton for the linen fabric, by doubling the five strand thread; so maybe I can use a ten strand thread of embroidery cotton, that would be the same or close to the wool thread in the medium punch needle?

    I guess I’m weird, because I love the look on the burlap! I want to create a wall hanging - not going to wear it so the roughness and smell doesn’t matter to me. I envision a textured piece. Thanks for the video, I was wondering if I could use a punch needle on burlap successfully!

    • @studioversie
      @studioversie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe I'm the one who is weird😉😊 but yes, burlap works! It could be that the weave is a little bit more loose, so the loops won't get grabbed that well. But it should work.
