The size of your calipers make me question my manhood (as a mechanic)... I am mildly concerned about the possibility of a “balloon effect” of the tire on the arch under compression. Try a big hit on a soft lawn first. Then keep the great content coming!
I did a similar video where I tested 27.5x4” front with 29x3” rear. Super fun. Can’t wait to see how your test goes, I bet you’ll feel like you can plow through anything, but still have a playful feeling from the smaller rear wheel.
Looking forward to the review! Also, in the video you said that every 20mm of A2C would decrease the HA by 0.5 degrees. I thought a change of 10mm would cause a change of 0.5 degrees in HA.
Crazy timing, just switched my Banshee Paradox to a mullet this past weekend. 29x2.5 Assegai by 27.5x2.8 Rocket Ron. Couldn't fit a 27.5x3.0 on a 40mm ID wheel in the rear on this bike the 2.8 hardly clears for me. So far loving the setup, I had a 27.5x3.0 Dirt Wizard on before so it's definitely rolling easier now. The higher BB is welcomed since the paradox sits so low already.

Oh boy, that rubbing is sketchy sounding off the trails. I did the same to fit a tire too big for the rear. My bike still has that brake bridge in the frame design, though it's not used for that at all. I've seen others just cut it off, but I'm not that experiMENTAL yet. I did, however, take a file to it and give myself a couple of millimeters of clearance. Only time I notice it is when I go through mud which isn't too common in Southern California, fortunately.
awesome thank you for posting this! i've been undertaking a similar exercise on my Big Honzo ST. Going the other way though experiementing with 27.5 x 2.6 instead of my 29 x 2.35 eliminators and the 27.5 x 2.8 ardents. i came up with similar differences in tire height, really only losing about .5 inches in bb height going to the 2.6's but need to do some more testing. swapped into some 165mm cranks to help out too!
Hey, love your videos. A quick question though. Any quick thoughts on turning an old 26er into a mullet by swaping the fork for a 27.5 or a 29 one and the corresponding wheel? I know it would mess up the geo seriously, but what would you expect it to be like? Too gnarly? Too short reach?
I have a 29er Hardtail and also want to try mullet. But how is it for the steertube when the headangel changes. How are the forces with the mullet setup? or arent there any problems with that?
I sure would like to try a normal 27,5+ or 29+ and a mullet+ a MASSIVE 27,5+ has to wait till i have a Ragley Mmmbop frame next year as my frame barely fits a Minion 2,4. I hope they will change the geometry a bit with like you said on the big al with a steeper seatangle and i hope maybe a little lower bb. Not sure i would like a 29er more i would have to test ride a big al to know. But damn would i love to put berd spokes on the wheelset for the next bike! I wish they would be a bit cheaper. 500bucks for a full set of spokes is a bit much. I should probably ask around to test ride a set on the next bike. My current one doesn't have a boost rear end. I also got a question.. A the moment i have 31,8mm aluminum bars. He is also a lot taller and 30kg heavier than me tho. I just want to go carbon because of the vibration damping. Should i worrie about bars braking when shredding my bike real hard?

That is almost exactly how my Paradox is set up. 29x3.0 XR4 front with 27.5x2.8 Nobby Nic's in the back. Both on 40mm internal width wheels. On my MKI Helm coil I had to remove a lot of material from the bridge. Like a lot of material, I really would not worry about the little bit Steve took out. Mine has held up fine for the last year. It will rub the crown slightly on a hard bottom out but not enough to cause a problem. Shaving the tire down or adding a 2 or 3mm shim to the bottom out bumper would probably be a good idea long term. Love the content. Keep up the good work.
I’m wondering when under pressure (ie bottoming out the fork) will the tire diameter increase slightly on the opposite side of where the tire contacts the ground (fork arch area)? Similarly,I have pumped up my maxxis 2.8 from 13 psi to say 23 psi, and noticed the sidewall and corner lugs width grows slightly, but didn’t think about checking the overall tire diameter increases.
How you measure axle to crown, I just buy a marzocchi z1 150mm 29er the info page say it's 560 axle to crown but I measure and is 570 the rock shox 35 at 130 is around 542 so how much change should I see in geometry?

I'm running my banshee with 2.8 front and rear but I really wanted to put a 29er up front in plus mode very curious to see what you think I love it in 2.8 275 but you're right the front end does get stuck in deep holes more than my 29er
i wouldnt be afraid to sand the middle knobs down just a bit on the front tire verses removing more material from the fork arch easy to do real quick with an angle grinder and a flap disc sanding wheel. Just dont do it in the house because burning rubber stinks !!
Had to bust out those massive calipers again, I love it! So running mullet+ now, can't say I've ever seen that. Pretty cool, but I'll stick with 29+. Can't wait to hear your review on this and those ICAN wheels and Bontrager tires. Have a feeling you'll get a lot of front tire buzz once on the trail. You might have already changed the fork.
Have you heard of anyone doing a fatbike mullet with 27.5 front 26 rear? Almost tempted to to this with the RM Blizzard. Probably 3.8 front and rear...
I haven't, but it sounds like a fun experiment. I'd really like to experiment with fatbikes more. Nobody is making a slack fatbikes with a short cs. I think a 26" rear tire or even a 24" rear tire might be required for the short chainstay I'm hoping for..
@@hardtailparty I'd be curious to see how slack fatbikes get. The 2021 Blizzard is 66HTA which is quite slack at least by FB standards, ya? Not sure about the CS length. Presumably someone could fit it with an angled headset to put it to 64HTA etc...
@@killjoy8914 see my modern technique video. The reason brake rotors are bigger in the front than the back is because of how important the front wheel is for weight and traction and stopping power
To maintain the geometry and to mitigate the effects of feeling like the rear is sagging too much, I'd be more inclined to keep the 29x2.3 up front. Only a 16mm difference in height between that and the 27.5+. Haven't tried this but it'd be interesting to hear your analysis.
I'm actually most interested in the geo change to see what it does better. I don't like running a high grip 3.0 rear with a narrow 2.3. i imagine that will just lead to more wash-outs. I prefer my front tire to have more grip than my rear.
@@hardtailparty I think part of the problem with MTB tire sizing is that we purchase based on width. In motocross, we see the width and sidewall aspect ratio. If we could get a standard size mtb tire (like a 2.4) with a very tall sidewall, we might get just as good bump absorption as with a plus tire. Other considerations like sidewall stiffness become more important, but for an aggressive hardtail where we need more suspension from our tires it could be a hit. Imagine a 29x2.4 front, but a 27.5x2.4 rear that has an outer diameter equal or almost equal to the 29er front. No geo change if you don't want it, improved bump compliance, but potentially slightly sluggish pedaling, and maybe too much rollover in the corners. The latter depends on sidewall construction.
i had 29x3.0 front,27.5x3.0 rear on my Banshee phantom it was a sweet setup. i might run it on my New RSD wildcat. a 29x3.0 minion fit great in my lyrik

Oooooo I've always been curious about a plus mullet. Although I'm personally more interested in a plus rear and standard trail width front, but I've always thought that the wider tires would add to the mullet idea.
I always prefer more traction up front vs in the rear, so i don't like running a narrower tire up front. With motorcycles it's different since they steer with the rear as much as with the front.
@@hardtailparty For sure, moto is also a much more climbing focused sport whereas mtb is all about the downs. For me plus tire traction on the front is more than I need except in the deepest sand or snow. However I've always been curious about the added cushion of plus in the rear on-top of the possible ability to spin out less on climbs. I also like a snappy light steering feel. Alternatively I've been meaning to experiment with wildly varying rim widths front and rear. With the same tire a wider rear rim would change the contact patch, tire profile and even the volume slightly without the downsides of a plus tire.

Great point about the balloon effect. I assume the top of the tire will be at max psi at all times while weighted.

My first mullet was in 2000. Azonic ds-1 with a 150mm bomber z1 cr. 26" front wheel, 24" rear with a nokia galazoddi 24x3.0 rear tire. It was awesome.

I am running mullet 27.5x2.8 rear 29x2.6 front on my eccentric cromo. I love this setup as it really smooths out the trails.

How will it fit an USD fork like the Intend? With no crown it might run smooth ?
Depends on the fork I suppose. I have an usd fork coming in soon to test that exact scenario.
I was about to say what fork are you running that has clearance for 29x3.0
RockShox forks have clearance for 29x3.0. some fox forks do as well, but not all.

Thinner on front usually means your front wheel breaks loose before your rear when cornering.

RockShox has been making 29x3.0 compatible forks for a few years now, i love that.

Oooooo I've always been curious about a plus mullet. Although I'm personally more interested in a plus rear and standard trail width front, but I've always thought that the wider tires would add to the mullet idea.
I always prefer more traction up front vs in the rear, so i don't like running a narrower tire up front.
With motorcycles it's different since they steer with the rear as much as with the front.
@@hardtailparty For sure, moto is also a much more climbing focused sport whereas mtb is all about the downs. For me plus tire traction on the front is more than I need except in the deepest sand or snow. However I've always been curious about the added cushion of plus in the rear on-top of the possible ability to spin out less on climbs. I also like a snappy light steering feel.
Alternatively I've been meaning to experiment with wildly varying rim widths front and rear. With the same tire a wider rear rim would change the contact patch, tire profile and even the volume slightly without the downsides of a plus tire.

@@hardtailparty Well first I said awesome video! And then I left a link to a website I just launched. I like to do these sorts of experiments with my bikes too, so I built a geo calculator that allows for wheel size changes, anglesets, axle to crown changes and some other stuff. I thought it would be right up your alley. I'm not trying to spam it, I have nothing to gain, just thought you might find it useful. I've been following your channel under my personal name for quite awhile. I won't post the link in this comment in case that was the issue with TH-cam flagging it.
