Hardtails on Hard Trails: Flying Monkey Trail on a Banshee Paradox V3 Plus Mullet

- I never thought I'd ride Flying Monkey on any bike, especially a hardtail. This one really got in my head. I had heard so much about it that it already psyched me out before I got to it. It wasn't awful, but the exposure and consequences were the real deal. I'd love to head back on a full suspension, but I'm glad I was able to ride so much on the hardtail. The paradox as a 29+/27.5+ mullet did even better than expected. And that Atomik rear wheel held up without a single issue. I'm supre impressed with that wheel.

It's so hard to ride well when you're scared, your technique goes right out the window. I haven't been this scared on a trail in a LONG time. The exposure was no joke. It definitely lived up to its reputation.
I was scared just watching this. You killed it on the hardtail. Way to go!
Spot on. The older I get, the more bothered I am by how high the penalty for cocking something up can get.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the odd crash, so long as it doesn't keep me off the bike. But some of those ledges looked unfunny if you fell off em.
Cheers
@@BrianRPaterson The consequences are real. This is an expert only trail. The one move i walked was rideable, but the consequences weren't worth it for me.
@@hardtailparty yeah... I've said that to myself a few times over the last 30+ years of riding, "Consequences of failure... not worth it."
The "GoPro effect" is in full force in this video.
@@ianfurqueron5850 It looked pretty darn steep off the edge even on gopro so I figured it just had to feel completely vertical in person.
Steve-"I'm walking this section" Me-I'm walking the whole freaking thing! This bike ride just became a hike!
Cody and a few of the others rode it, but the consequence just isn't worth it for me.
@@hardtailparty I cant believe the sections you did ride, sketchy.
It's amazing how exposure takes a trail from difficult to extreme haha. Great riding, I wish more people on here would show when they're walking sections...I think it helps viewers to understand there's nothing wrong with it and that it's not always worth the risk.
NFW - stands for "no effing way" would I do that. Balls of steel Steve.
Awesome riding Steve. That was proper scary !!!
As it’s a family channel, so I’m glad you couldn’t hear my cussing from the UK !!!
Taking risk for a RedBull helmet is just not worth it.
Hardtails on hard trails is my favorite TH-cam series!
I've never met a trail I couldn't clean on a hardtail...after a little time in the editing room.
I really like your attitude about riding, it's all about the sensible & the fun! Thank you kindly!
The footage as it stands looks scary enough, but what's scarier is knowing that the obstacles and steeps are at least 50% more sketchy than they look on GoPro's. Mad riding Steve and co!
This trail is a chunky ride of death on a full suspension. Steve: hold my Banshee
I thought about commenting on your last couple of videos about you maybe releasing another hardtails on hard trails and then you drop this. Hardrails on insane trails video. Great riding.
Wow, that was terrifying. Fair play! Amazing riding. I was clenching and leaning left whilst watching. Some serious chunk and with massive exposure. Taking a HT to its limits.
Flying monkey is no joke. I use to in hurricane and sometimes we’d shuttle that trail 3 times in a day. But we usually were riding our full downhill bikes. I did it a few times on hard tail back when 26” wheels were the only option. I just discovered your channel and I like it so far!
This video is such a testament to what you can really do with your bike. All with a 130mm fork! Insane!
wow, the front wheels of bike equip with ICAN Cycling F945 ? So cool video !
Yup, they survived Flying Monkey! Review coming soon...
@@hardtailparty wonderful
I agree, Steve, if he misses one of those its a couple hundred feet down! Hats off and respect!
No idea how I followed you down that trail and didn’t realize you were running berd spokes until you put out this vid!
You crushed it Ben. You were riding at the same level as the rest of the group.
SICK!! That trail is bonkers. Well done Steve great skill and cojones!
Safe, smooth, and fun! That defines my MTB riding.
It's getting rainy here in the Philippines at this time. Roads are wet, and trails are becoming muddy. It's high time to enjoy the trails!
Lots'a love, coffee-cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines!
Mad respect. Mad respect for the self preservation and mad respect for showing what can be done on sick hardtails.
Hardtails are so good these days
03:55 just looks like you're heading full speed into a wall. Crazy trail! Good job!
One handlebar on or against a rock or foot slip on a pedal, then a good rider is dead on parts of this trail. You definitely were smart to be cautious. I could never do that risk! I might hike it though. I am so glad that you were safe.
I mulletize my Sir 9 when I'm going to hit moderately steep stuff. In that case, I'm only going from 68 to 67-degrees HTA, so it's more compensating for what's lacking than trying to upgrade to tackle anything anyone would consider extreme. Super-steep stuff gets the already slack FS, but having the mullet setup definitely expands my hardtail options.
Steve definitely rad riding. Don't blame you at all for walking that section. Had to watch it two more times.
So excited, I’m buying a paradox and have a 27.5 wheel set already but definitely want to be able to set it up mullet too 👍🏼
Holy cow my butt-hole tightened up so hard it disapeared up inside my body!!! THAT'S TERRIFYING!!
Wow, that sure goes to show you the different levels of trail that are out there! When I used to rock-climb a lot, it was hard to explain to people what that gut-wrenching exposure feels like when you are right out of your comfort zone, and how it can affect your judgement too. Amazing footage - thanks for sharing Steve!
Everytime I see your paradox that paint job pops man I love it
Thanks. It's a super fun paint job, I'm happy with how it turned out.
Wow, that was really inspiring, thank you. We certainly don't get trails like that out east. Looked like fun!
Super vidéo. Looks like terrifying exposure.
Boy, I wish I had 29” and a dropper on the last bike I rode on that trail.
Great job and awesome video.
I have run mullet plus on my Esker Hayduke, I went i40 rims with 27.5x 2.8 Teravail Cumberland in back and i40 rims with 29x 3 Surly dirt wizards on front. I definitely didn’t tackle that extreme chunk that you rode but totally agree that the plus tires offer stability with that loose terrain.
Im heavily considering getting this frame, i love the look of it and i dont think theres anything more hardcore you could ride then this stuff!
Wow! That's one helluva ride. On any bike... I think I'd have to walk quite a bit of it with the exposure, but I'm sure there's not a ton of places to stop. Our trickiest trails are typically the off-camber, chunky, loose over hardpack. I think the trails I find the most fun are those with all the crazy technical challenges, but without as much risk. Fast flowy trails with exposure are pretty blah in my book.
Amazing riding the exposure on that trail is intense
Enjoyed the vid. Would love to have access to these trails. I live in Fl and although we have some great trails, there's nothing like the challenge you get out west. Not to mention the fact that a lot of trails here are being made way too easy so more people can ride them. Keep up the great content
Made me nervous watching you ride, not because you don’t have the skill set, but because you’re riding a HARDTAIL! Well done, sir!
This was not an easy one on a hardtail.
May give this a try. I have a frame that will take a 27.5x3 and a fork that I think will take a 29x3. If not for sure a 2.8. You’re always giving me these ideas to spend money dang it😂
Excellent ride on a very technical trail. I must admit I was a little puckered watching this video. No shame in walking one section and you should feel satisfied knowing you completed the Flying Monkey on a hardtail. Woo hoo!
Outstanding 🙌🙌!!! This was some of your best riding and the cliff on the right side 🥺🥺💀💀. Great footage, trail is scary even riding with a full squish!!! Great job 👍💪💪!!!
Thanks Shaun. That cliff was no joke. I'd like to go back and clean my riding up a bit now that i know the trail. This was my first time on it and riding a trail blind isnalwaus awkward.
Big props to you. That trail is a pucker ride.
Indeed! I was pretty nervous the first half of it.
Nice J-Hook by Cody at 6:15. I think I did one of those once 15 years ago... definitely on less extreme terrain, like child's play compared to this!
Man that trail looked fun!
Talk about the definition of "under biking", that was one scary trail. I probably would have ridden that when I was half my age, but at 54, I am definitely more cautious. I have said this many times, but my mantra is an old Dirty Harry saying, "A man's got to know his limitations".....I know mine
I like that saying.
@@hardtailparty Yep, it has kept me from getting hurt. No sense in getting injured trying to prove something in my opinion. I would rather take the little bit of disappointment, than take time off the bike.
3:40-4:15 no GoPro effect there. You could really tell how challenging the terrain was and how much precision was required. I would probably go there to hike and leave the bike at home for that trail (at least for now)!
Sick man. Nicely done.
Mad respect. I'm not riding that on anything less than a full squish rig with 160mm travel minimum. Riding like that would take some getting used to. I see nothing like that near me. Lol
Wow, that trail looks hard core with those boulders + side drop, I'd hardly want to walk it let alone ride it 😅
That was awesome plain and simple. Serious consequences on that trail. 👍
Some of this stuff is big (2:49, 4:43) it must be hard keeping your eyes up on the line. It would be so easy for me to get laser focused on trying to keep from getting wedged only to end up getting wedged between the chunk.
I don't comment ever on ride videos but DANG...nice job dude, that did look SOOOPER sketchy in some spots like head super-computer-line-picker-program-on-OVERLOAD...nice work...
Thanks. My brain was even more tired than my body at the bottom of this one.
Nice riding!
Definitely going to try the mullet setup on my paradox I'm running 275 plus now front and rear and I'm liking it a lot
What tire size are you using? And what's the bb height on 275 plus?
@@bikepink4768 2.8 and bb I really don't know but it's on the low side but very manageable I'm running 175 mm cranks and I still get very few pedal strikes and it's very Rocky where I am
@@JohnM-p5r glad to know. Planning to change my tires to 2.8s also. Really loving the Paradox! Ride safe! 🤘
POV angle here is impressive.
wow! great riding. you guys have some skills.
Steve - “This is a section I’m going to walk, just because that exposure is really big.” Me - “ The entire upper section looks like he’s riding one the side of a cliff!” I’m still on an adrenaline high from watching…the second time!!
Apparently there was a trail there, just looked like s sketchy almost vertical boulder field. Skills - but I was scared watching.
Nicely done!
very impressive riding
BRAVO sir!
Awesome video! Thanks for showing when you decided to walk it. Always ok to be smart. Have you ever worn a full face helmet on gnarly trails like this?
I own a full face helmet, but I don't feel very comfortable in it, as my vision is compromised. For big bikepark, fast stuff i wear the full face, but not slow soeed tech like this.
No pressure from me. Stay safe!
Who else leaned their head to the left to give Steve some extra grip?
Looks awesome 👍
No, no, no, no. Yall did great. But there is no way I would do that. Spicy!!!!!
You're a stud! That's a sketchy trail on an enduro
Thanks it scared me more than I'd like to admit, but I'd happily go back on the right full sus.
Wow, “SPICY”! great video
I usually fall asleep to the sound of your tire buzzing. Ill put you up there with Seinfeld and King of the Hill. Do you cover your front brake?
Hardtail hardtrail 💪fist bump to you brother..🤜🤛
Your a madman Steve🤘
Hey, and this is coming from a crazy clown, he should know!
I forgot to mention, wow, in the hands of a skilled rider, the Paradox is a beast! What a bike.
It truly is!
Whoohoo! I got a reply from Steve. Btw, I just finished watching Dustybetty's bike packing day 1. Very fun!
Yikes! I can imagine being deflected off one of those rocks right off the cliff!
That trail would be sketchy and scary even without the exposure. I think "fear" is an appropriate term to use. Some of those sections could easily send someone over the edge, and there wouldn't be time to do anything but watch them fall.
Interesting what you say about the rebound, do you think that in a hardtail you have to set the rebound more slower? I feel like you have better control on technical trails whit the slow rebound on the hardtail, what do you think Steve? By the way great riding that trail is no joke a lot of exposure any bad move and game over.
Hitting big drops makes me want to run slower rebound. You'll notice the rampage guys run their rebound SUPER slow, often as slow as it'll go. It keeps you from getting bucked when compressing on big landings.
Good ride. Plenty of pucker factor just watching today The risk vs. Reward scale is in effect. Why the paradox over the spot or middle child?
This is far too chunky and steep for the spot. Not to mention i didn't have the spot at the filming of these videos. These videos take a LONG time to film and edit. The middle child is set up SS. I was on Utah for a weekend riding all sorts of trails with my buddies. While I love SS, on road trips I pick a bike that's versatile enough to handle whatever i come across, and gears are part of that for me.
@@hardtailparty i feel ya there. I'm doing a 5 day trip around Oregon and am taking the squishy bike cuz there can be only one.
I’m 6ft do you think I can pull off a XL in the Banchee ?
Stopped the video halfway through and searched for flying monkey trail deaths, I figured someone must have gone over the edge at sometime.
Shows that you can ride a hardtail anywhere.
Amazing ride mate :) what pressure are you setting in rear wheel on those rocky rides?
usually around 15-16 psi with the 27.5x3.0
Im scared of looking at it. Is 5:45 a place from Matt Jones Intro?
Possibly, he's ridden this trail and it's even more dangerous sibling, King Kong. I'll never ride King Kong, especially on a hardtail.
Mad Skill!
I’ve noticed your brakes squeak the same way that mine do. I believe that’s down to microscopic bends in the rotor and a really stiff caliper, do you have any other guesses? I know they’re not contaminated and I know they’re not cheap either. Appreciate any answers you can give and love the vids
It could just be the pads, or dirt on the rotor.
That’s not a trail, it’s a debris field. Nice job.
Is there a video with it ridden in pure 29er mode?
Yes, several
So gnar dude
I had palpitations for you!! Dude, amazing moves👍
This trail looks sick, but the exposure makes me sick...lol
Nerves of steel! That would terrify me lol
Yooo hardtail party.
How about the steering? Does it still feel like a 29er when doing corners or more on the 27.5 side when steering?
It corners like a modern, slack 29er with a long reach
@@hardtailparty I see! I was hoping that it would steer turn like a 27.5 maybe just a little bit but appreciate the relply htparty! Btw! theres a local bike here in the Philippines that is getting a lot of hype for its geometry, price and materials its called KENS TYRANN X1. They say it was inspired from the Commecal METAHT. Maybe you wanna do a review for your Filipino supporters 😇
Come to Boise and I'll ride my Hardtail with you! It's got a trust fork so it looks like something from the future and never fails to get comments, I'm sure you'd like it :)
I'd love to try a trust on a hardtail. I've only tried them on fs bikes so far.
@@hardtailparty Works great! 130 travel is a perfect amount for a "trail" hardtail imo, and the stability is unmatched.
I have considered running my 29” Santacruz Chameleon as a mullet . What do you think about a aluminum Santacruz mullet
If your trails are steep with lots of sharp corners i say go for it
@@hardtailparty very good to know thank you ! Loven the Slack-R kit now on my chameleon
Hihaaa this is riding the trail !!
Welp that’s a trail I’ll never find myself on no matter the bike. The good ole risk reward matrix needs a new “Nope” column.
Out of curiosity, what would your go to hardtail be for a trail like bugs springs?
Lots of hardtails would fit that bill nicely. Something slack and rowdy with a complaint frame and a short rear end. I'd probably choose plus tires too. The bike I'm designing should be perfect for bug, prison camp, and Millie.
@@hardtailparty I'll be looking forward to seeing what this mystery bike is!
That was awesome. Not gonna lie, I was sitting on my sofa clenching my cheeks on a couple of those sections. I bet your wife “loves” watching these videos.... after the fact.
Wow! The testicular fortitude it takes to ride that!!!
Yikes! I'm not a fan of the exposure. Looks like a great hiking trail to me.
When I saw the tittle I thought you were calling "monkey" to a guy going fast on a hardtail jaja
How many people buy the farm on that trail every year?
Search and rescue seems to be out there almost every day
What pressure did you run? And were test cush core?
No cush core. I was around 15 psi, but I rode it like a hardtail not a fs.
Too much exposure for me in a few spots. Looks like a great trail otherwise!
