  • Video of Michael Evanko fly fishing Ninemile Creek in Onondaga County, New York. This body of water is west of Syracuse and runs from its source at Otisco Lake almost 22 miles before emptying into Onondaga Lake. The water fished in the video is public water with all tackle regulations. There is a variety of wild and stocked brown trout in Ninemile Creek. This footage was shot over Memorial Day weekend 2017 and accompanied a blog post on the Wooly Bugged blog.

    He's standing next to one of the oldest railroad's in North America, the 'Auburn Road'. It was pre-steam/coal driven. That entire hill he's standing in-front of is *man-made*.
    Stop by the Martisco Railway Museum (that's open on weekends) up the road some time if you're in the area during summer.
    The Fish Hatchery that stocks it is about 3 miles away down Route 321. Also tons of history and the same era as the Hover damn.
    Where he's standing used to be Lyons Road that got closed about 10/15 years ago. It was a nightmare to drive in the winter time.

      @@raweslo11 I miss it too. I moved to Texas for work years ago. Utterly featureless. CNY is gorgeous in the spring/summer. We try to visit every year.

    I have fished Ninemile many years. The small brown you caught is wild. They don't stock fish that small. Good video. Good production values.

    My hometown. Grew up there and fished nine mile creek in a much different area: Running behind a bank of stores and Wegman's Supermarket off West Genessee Street. I'm 70 so that was in the early 60's. Fishing then was terrible. It definitely has been improved since my early teen years. Great video. Very well done and kept my interest throughout. You are a a very accomplished fly fisherman. Thanks for fishing my most memorable stream in Central NY.

      Hey John, thanks for the comment. It's good to know that Ninemile has improved. I was amazed at the number of fish in there. I'd like to get back up there at some point to fish it again.

    I live about 5 miles from where your standing. Yes, Nine Mile Creek is EXCELLENT trout fishing! I've fly fished there many times. If you can work your way down stream for about a half a mile… There are plenty of nice holes to nymph at.

    I've been meaning to get out to this creek, after watching this it looks like I'll be making plans soon. This is also pretty close to limestone and chittenango to make a day of it

    Great to see Ninemile getting some run. You taped at the 2 most popular sites on the creek. I wonder if you hit the many other great spots from Otisco Lake to the Village of Camillus. Many miles of great fishing. The USA fly fishing team had a competition there this past weekend. I talked to a young fisher who caught 30 in less than an hour. He was using the Czech nymphing style. Check out their website. I didn't add them all up but it is close to, if not over 1,000 fish caught over the 2 days by America's best fly fishers.

      Trout Bum Most of the wild ones have red or orange spots and the stocked have black. The stockys also usually have stubbed fins. If they holdover they get alot better looking

    Yes lots of scuds. I discovered that picking the green stuff off my nymph, they were a light grey. One day I was fishing a Usual and pulled it under to avoid a snag and fish swam out to nail it. I think they took it for a scud, so I use that tactic alot when fishing a Usual. Thanks, I subscribed. You have a recipe for your green scud?

    Grew up fishing this creek. I usually go to that section at Martisco and you probably saw me there this year. The creek is loaded with brown and brook trout, carp, a few bass here and there and tons of tiger muskie. The tigers are stocked in Otisco Lake and come into the creek to feast on the dumb stockies. At 5:21 the markings on the fish are called paw marks and they mark a young fish. I would guess it was a wild trout because the smallest trout they stock are 1 year olds and they are normally a little bigger and more pale in color. The best way is to look at their stomach to see if it is white or golden color. If it is a golden color then they are wild or at least holdover fish. The scud dropper is a great move because the creek is absolutely filled with them

    • @matthewdieffenbach2435
      @matthewdieffenbach2435 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fish at 9:30 is definitely wild or holdover. Anyways I love seeing videos of people fishing my home waters. I would love to see you try to pull out carp and tigers on the fly rod

    • @matthewdieffenbach2435
      @matthewdieffenbach2435 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can find them throughout the whole creek. A lot of them are in the Martisco section, but even more are in the section between the Amboy dam and onondaga lake. You can also find some big carp, lake run browns and fish from Onondaga lake

    • @matthewdieffenbach2435
      @matthewdieffenbach2435 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    All stocked trout in NY have a clipped back fin.

    They do stock juvis in Nine Mile as well as breeders. But if you want larger you need to go more downstream towards the deeper slower water about a half a mile to two miles.

  • @bigpapi3636

    Beautiful water! Maybe not a bad idea to dead drift a streamer in some of those deeper holes. It wouldn't surprise me if there weren't some large Browns in there, especially if they're stocking

    Those spots are pounded until at least mid-June. Never liked this creek because the larger fish aren't in there. That green slimy seaweed type vegetation is a spin fisherman's nightmare. Weeds on every cast. Much prefer WNY streams like Cattaraugus and Wiscoy. Larger fish and not as many people to walk around. Your PA stocking program kicks NYS ass btw. Great video.

      I agree. I do have to say that 9 mile holds a special place in my heart because it is where I learned to fly fish and it's only a 10 minute drive from where I live. I caught the creek at a slow time in May this year and i was the only guy out. Another fisherman came along on this gigantic creek, literally miles to cast, and he threw his line across my drifting fly line. I kid you not. Good way to ruin the day haha

      @@AJSUMMA90 I hear ya on the ignorant fellow fisherman. They're like when you have a classic car and you park way away in a parking lot, then you come back out to your car and there's some clown parked right next to you with plenty of other parking spots they could have parked in. Can't stop people from being A-holes I guess :)
