Superb skill builder vids. In 5yrs of watching fly fishing videos this is the single most comprehensive vid out there. Only Brian at Mad River Outfitters comes close. Minor point is why not have "Playlists" so us viewers don't have to wade through lots of flytying vids ( probably excellent ones) to find the scarcer skill builder/ actual fishing videos. I'm relatively new to fly fishing and the thousands of fly fishers who don't or don't yet tie our own fly's can get directly to your superb fishing skills content faster and won't overlook/miss stuff. But having said the above this is one of the very best fly channels. And Lance seriously knows his stuff and communicates so well and the editing is awesome.
Reely (sp.) enjoyed this. I had never considered putting floatant on the butt section to make for a quieter lift. Makes sense. For those of you watching this that have not experienced dry takes, I didn't either my first few years of fly fishing. In the past year or so, I have experienced takes. And SO CAN YOU! It's truly magical. Timing is everything in many ways and I will leave it at that...
I love these skill builders. Thank you guys so much for sharing your skills pun intended. Thank you gentlemen I love the way you guys teach. I love to learn from this. It is so awesome to be a part of it. Thanks.
Another great video! I got my first fish on a dry fly for the year last week during a baetis hatch in SW Montana, and it's got me STOKED to get back out there! Thanks for all you guys do 🙌
I know this is a flyfishing page, and I’ll probably get ridden out of town on a rail, but I use the paste on the last 3 feet of my line when I’m throwing top water lures with conventional gear. And yes, it does help keep the end of the fly line and leader on top of the water.
Hi Lance, great video … thanks for sharing some great tips…may I ask your view on using small tippet rings (1-2mm diameter) to join tippet lengths onto the end of a tapered leader please? Thanks and best regards
Lance, awesome coverage of dry fly fishing. One thing you didn’t mention was furled leaders. Many reputable fly fishing experts have mentioned these for dry fly fishing. What is your take on them and how to use?
I’ve fished furled leaders very little. I didn’t enjoy them. Water spray, ice when cold, and most commercially available are too short for my liking. That said, if you love them, why not use them. 🙌
What type of fly line do you recommend for something like a 10’ 3 wt. euro nymphing rod primarily used for nymphing, but is sometimes needed to throw a delicate size 20 cdc dry fly when fish start rising? (taper and weight)
Hi lance You must testing vision rivermaniac 9feet 3 fly in medium In 4 and 5 also But light fly IS better smooth and with a good timing you Can accelerate thé fly Line!!
Many offer fast recovery speeds but mostly in the high end price points. Standouts to me are the sage trout LL, Loomis NRX + LP, Orvis Helios F, and Scott G series.
I've been waiting through plenty of fly fish videos today and damn if this isn't one of the most descriptive and useful.

Another great video from FFF! Thats about 20 years of experience distilled down, for free, in 15 mins. Thanks Lance.
“Friggin” Awesome Lance! Job well done as always! Thanks to all you folks at FFF.

Incredibly informative and helpful masterclass, even for those who’ve been doing it for a while.

Seems like a great idea to me 🙌
Great info. Thanks.
Have you ventured into Glass rods! My favorite for small stream drys!

what a dynamic personality
Haha. Pretty boring if you ask me. 😂
All the fish think so, they all line up to meet him
Wow so much information to soak up for a newbie. Guess I have a large learning curve ahead. Thanks for confusing me 😂
Stick with the fly fish food guys and lance’s podcast with “the newb and the knower “.
Great stuff

Really good info. I’ve also heard the opposite about putting lubricant on your fly line because it gathers dirt and can damage your line, thoughts?
Agreed. This isn’t a lubricant, it’s a floatant. And I don’t suggest putting on the entire line, just the tip end. Maybe 2-3’.

Is stretching new line still a thing on these modern fly lines? I give mine a bit of a stretch, just wanted some of your thoughts!
Yes, I stretch my lines each time I pull line from a reel to start a day of fishing. 🙌
Which soft action rods do provide a higher recovery speed? That is information not provided by any rod manufacturer
Many offer fast recovery speeds but mostly in the high end price points. Standouts to me are the sage trout LL, Loomis NRX + LP, Orvis Helios F, and Scott G series.
