Should you draw every day? Sometimes I go through phases where I draw a little bit each day, and phases where I have long breaks between drawing. How often do you draw?

My mental health doesn't allow me too draw everyday, I love art but I just can't always do it. Especially because I deal with task avoidant adhd, I just become paralyzed thinking about everything I want to do but I can't bring myself to do it.

I draw everyday. Not for any particular reason other than I love it. It’s how I decompress and get rid of anxiety. I feel particularly anxious when I don’t draw days on end.

I used to think that drawing every day was the only way to make me improve in drawing. But for me it just isn't doable. And it causes me a lot of anxiety/stress at first. But it's definitely not the only way to improve and keeping art fun is so much more important!

I am out of a 2 years long burn out where I didn't do anything fun or art whatsover, I do work full time and I say art is my main ''hobbit'' I would love to make it a career too, but after a so long break, my skills needed to refine. Anyway, I do draw everyday between 5 minutes to 2 hours because it my happy place, when you are in a dark place for so long, when you find this feeling again it is so much fun and refreshing. I don't pressure myself tho, I'm just having fun in my sketchbook, playing with my supplies and stuff. Thanks for the video! I adore your content

I work between 40-50 hours a week in a fish and chip shop. So that tires me out, cooking and cleaning and self care and sleep all adds up to not a lot of time for drawing. I do try to draw every day. If I can do a page per day, I would be happy. Sometimes it’s only 1-3 pages a month. But I am an artist at heart and will always find time to draw. But Im terrible at consistency and don’t enjoy posting as much as I used to.
But, regardless, I will keep trying to draw every day, I have many new sketchbooks I want to try out so I need to keep on keeping on with using up my materials. And along the way I’ll get better :) It will all be worth it in the end, and regardless of how tired I am when I make the artwork. The next day when I look at a finished page I’m always happy that I did it. And that makes it worth it each and every time.

I draw every day. It started as a 100 day challenge in a drawing group and I just kept drawing after. 🤷🏻‍♀️ that said, the habit of sitting down to draw is more important to me than drawing for a specific amount of time, so if I’m busy or burned out, I’ll just draw a doodle. Other days I’ll draw for hours. On average it’s probably 30-60 minutes a day lately.

I don't draw everyday just when I can. I took 8 years off from drawing when my life got really crazy but got back into it a few years back. I've noticed that the creative streak comes and goes. Also, the chicken you were talking about is a bantam they are my favorite chicken besides silkies. They are small but have such big personalities.

Chickens are such adorable birds. Lovely sketchbook spread again. I draw or paint almost every day in the evening. An exception is usually when I am traveling for work reasons and driving a lot in a day. But on regular days, its something between one and two hours, after dinner. By that time, work and all duties at home are done. It's never uninterrupted drawing time, but I try to make the best out of it. I just need it as a balance to my job as an electrical engineer.

I'm a writer not a painter but one of my favourite quotes is "it's hell writing and it's hell not writing. The only tolerable state is having just written". I have a deep kind of urge to write, in some phases of my life more than others. I've had phases where I scribbled on bus tickets and grocery bills and the margins of books if I didn't have my notebook with me cause I had the need to get out the words in my head onto a piece of paper all day and I did write every day. But other times I have phases where I don't write a couple days or weeks. I love writing and I also hate it and the phases I write every day are phases I feel more restless and kind of hounded? In a way? I don't know if many people feel that way about their creative hobbies, but sometimes I feel like it's more of an urge or a need and less an enjoyable hobby even though I do love writing.

I think that I draw a few times a week because I have a part-time job, so at the end of the day there really is not energy to keep going and draw. Usually I draw on my days off like today, and up to 2 hours at a time, maybe more if I get in the zone.

I try to draw every day but I can't quite keep the pace... I keep a tiny sketchbook in my handbag and I try to draw every week day at work during lunch break, even if it's just a 5 min doodle. I also draw in the evening and on weekends! But I really think drawing every day is not a requirement. It should remain fun!

I took a 2yr break from drawing while becoming a sciende teacher and all that. I still draw ton, and recently went back to drawing every day. I sleep with sketchbooks in my bed and carry little ones with me. I missed drawing every day because it's how I decompress and it's... like a meditation of sorts. It's fun! I get lots of ideas, and I can revisit them during school breaks. I wish it was my career but, it may never be. For now, art for fun :)

It doesn't have to be a big painting but a five or ten minute sketch while being on the phone or listening to the news whatever it is people do where they could draw at the same time.
I think it helps a lot with muscle memory and I feel I am faster now in capturing my motif.

I think that mental state for the hobbyist plays a big role in the frequency of drawing. When my mental state is poor, everything is a chore, even drawing, even though I love it. Also, they're all chickens, just a matter of rooster or hen lol. Love them, they're too cute.

I was (and still) mostly that person who draws every day. But when I does it, sometimes it can be a whole day, a few hours or just a few minutes. When I didn't had much time I just made sketches. I think when you draw every day, is important to have fun with it. And when you do not feel to draw it is okay. Your brain sometimes need rest. And when this is happening it's okay, and you can do other creative stuff or just relax. :3

I'm one of those insane people that draw pretty much every day, it's my favorite thing to do. It brightens my day, brings me peace, and I just enjoy creating character concepts and thinking about interactions between nonexistent people and creatures HAHA !! It's very rare I get artblock at this point although this month has been slower than most, but I'm starting to regain my flow which is nice :3c Also yes those are chickens since those are tail feathers and not sickle feathers, and males have bigger comb/wattle :] Anyway, lovely video !!!

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! It's nice to listen to you while I try to do my own art.
Honestly, I try to make "art" every day, I've been drawing and painting "seriously" for 3 years, can't say I'm an artist, not at least like people think of it by social media standards, recently at the loss of my job I started my artistic journey of trying to do something even if small every day and post it just to share with the 3 friends that care for it.
I do think that It has helped me feel more comfortable with the tons of art materials I have bought over the years, I always felt some kind of "guilt" of using them because my art isn't as good as the artists I follow, but I am trying to do something, even if small, even if I don's like it at the end, I try to do it because I enjoy the process, to choose what to do, to choose the colors the materials, the sketching to the final piece, even if sometimes I struggle in the middle I try and trust the process, it helps me keep my mind occupied and stay focused on a task.
I hope to one day, do something big, something without guilt of using the materials and something that I love so much I want t share it with the whole world and not care if they don't like it, because I DO.
Thank you again, and sorry for the semi-rant, I can't wait to see what more of your beautiful sketches, they always give some spark to my day.

I'm a beginner artist, so far I have been looking at art and whatever I like I draw about, I dont normally copy but for art pieces that have a thing that I want to improve on I draw that, like last week I found an art piece that had simple hair, but it looked voluminous. Still not great at drawing hair or eyes but I will get better the more I try.
I have also given myself a break day (that I sometimes break cause I want to draw lol)

I think a lot of people with jobs and responsibilities that are not TH-cam influencers might only find themselves only with time to draw once a week this would leave them feeling their no improvement to their skills while being bombarded by the “you need to draw everyday” mantra. While I had children I found myself with the need to actually put aside artistic pursuits altogether until they were grown and out of the home do to myself getting angry over being interrupted every time I sat down with my pencil to try and draw. But everyone has a different experience.

Even though I’m not really happy with my current output, and I sometimes go several months at a time without drawing anything at all… it’s okay if I don’t feel like drawing! It’s not my job, and I already struggle with keeping momentum with every other hobby, so it’s not at all surprising lol. Everyone draws at different paces, and as long as it still makes me happy to draw, that’s all I really need! ❤

Usually I draw for at least 30mins-1hr on most days, sometimes more if I'm particularly inspired to work on something or another, or if I'm trying to get a lot done haha.

i had a three year period, from 2020 to 2022, where i did end up drawing every single day, but by the end it felt more like an obligation than a way to make sure i got in touch with something i love to do. So 2023 and 2024 have been really refreshing to me, to not have this obligation to draw. I still draw most days, but its more because i want to than because i need to, especially now that I got into new hobbies, so theres a healthier balance of things i like to do, instead of only having drawing or watching youtube when I'm not busy with stuff
It helps to try and draw every day short term, if you want to build a consistent drawing routine, but its not really realistic nor manageable in the long term
Edit: as for my drawing routine/how much time i spend on it, now that I'm taking a break from college, i can easily spend 2 to 5 hours a day. I usually like to start at the table, doing traditional art, mostly sketching and such, and more towards the evening | move to the couch to do digital art, as it is more comfortable for me.

I started an a6 Daily Doodle Diary where the focus is consistent drawing, not good drawing, I still miss about 4 days or so every month, but in general it’s made me feel more like an artist, like this is what I do with my time. I can finish a page in under a minute if I want and it still counts other days I’ll spend a full 15 minutes on it 🤷‍♀️ I don’t think it’s helping me improve but I think it is helping me stay motivated, like I can start a drawing whenever because I’m used drawing consistently. Also that the first sketch can be as messy and scribbly as you want, as long as you start getting your ideas down. I think if you are trying to improve it’s better to do a shorter challenge, if your challenge is too long you’ll lose steam. Instead of “100 heads in 10 days” I want to try a “how many heads can I draw in 7 days” or maybe even 3 days for a long weekend, I think this is a good way to avoid burnout

I also collage fairly often, and I do that when I feel like I want to create but don't really have the energy to do a fully painting or drawing. Sometimes I do silly/ easy doodles or sketches but a lot of the time rn I'm doing finished work, even if it's just in my sketchbook. I'm in an art course at school, so I do need to draw every other day. and I also draw outside of school every day if I can (somedays I can't because of schoolwork or tests to study for). but it's like- an hour ot two of drawing with regular "breaks" where I'm looking at my phone (it's more like drawing is a break from screens than the screen is a break from drawing). It's not something I wish to change though. If I actually drew for two hours straight I'll probably end uo burnt out to do anything at all for the next two days

I was just binge watching you yesterday!! 😂 I draw nearly everyday, but out of habit not obligation, I sit down draw what comes to mind, take requests, brainstorm ideas, work on commissions, etc, and when I get bored or tired, I stop lol ❤

I draw everyday for the most part, maybe 3 days a year i don't draw and that's on holidays. Art's the most important thing in my life for the most part, and even if i go out and experience the world more, i will want to draw what i experience. Im currently a college student (off semester) and while i would also put in about 7 hours a day for drawing classes, i would draw a lot more in my freetime, many times for about 12-16 hours total daily. A lot of people talk about burnout, but in my experience, as long as I keep the amount of work i do for myself above the amount of work i do for others, even if it ends up being a 16 hour work day, i still feel refreshed after it all because i got a lot done for myself too

I tried drawing everyday once for inktober, and I burned out so much I haven't been drawing for years at this point.

I do not draw every day but it irritates me. I have the time but not the energy.
When I practised playing the flute I played every single day for at least half an hour up to two, two and a half. I improved a lot and forced myself through some difficult exercises that helped me out a lot.
With drawing I am still at a skill level I am not happy with. I do see improvement in certain areas and generally I am a lot faster with my line work and stuff but I have long ways to go still.
My thing here is is that drawing is a very productive hobby unlike music. Music is gone the second you stop playing and if you sucked that day, it will leave you with a bad feeling, whereas your drawing is still there and often it helps to take a step back, come back tomorrow and see that it wasn't so bad after all.
Filling a sketchbook and looking back at what you created is a nice feeling as well.
So I kinda am angry at myself for not drawing every day and I try to help myself a bit now by implementing some things you do. For example I don't force myself to finish a sketch with colour all in one go but rather focus on some outlines and colour them in tomorrow. This also helps a lot with the empty page pressure to be perfect.
All this I learned from your videos and I am very happy to have found your channel.
I wish you good luck with all the work you have and energy and joy in all the tasks related to your business!
    Have a nice Sunday!

Where did you study art? Do you think it's a necessary to get to the point you are into right now? Was it helpful on your journey?

I went to Sheridan for Illustration (Canada). It definitely helped, since I'm motivated by deadlines. But I don't think it's necessary at all, it depends if you have the funds & if a school setting works for you!

If it’s a hobby, no. You draw when you want to draw. It’s supposed to be something fun and relaxing, it isn’t supposed to stress you out.
However, if it is your job, then yes. You need to practice as much as you can so you don’t lose your art, if anything, you improve.
