    Hey everyone! In this video I wanted to talk about how to have fun sketching again. It's really easy to lose that creative spark and that joy you once felt when filling a sketchbook. I wanted to share some thing that have helped me regain that joy for drawing. Please also share your tips in the comments! I hope you enjoyed this one :)

      Something I've done a few times that is quite fun for me, is getting some reference photos and using highlighter to block out the general shape of the photo (can be a human, animal, etc) and then go over the highlighter with ballpoint pen to add the details. It can be relaxing in a way, and the end result looks very interesting and colorful!

    For me, I abandoned the idea of “spreads”. If I have five minutes to draw i pick one thing I like and go for it… it doesn’t have to match what’s already on the page; it doesn’t have to use the same media or colours that are already there; it can be whatever I want whenever I want…. While this doesn’t create the same aesthetic of a page all done in one theme, it keeps me drawing and creating and allows me to get ideas down on the page without worrying about the cohesiveness or theme of what I’m drawing. In the end, the pages are beautiful because they’re filled, and the style is uniform because it was all drawn by my hand in a way that made me happy at the time.

      the idea of a sketchbook is that, to put whatever. I can see myself beign obsessed with something adn drawing two pages of that. not all of it being polished, but all the same thing. often when i'm learning osmething (and i think i'm probably an adhder so maybe thsi explains why i can fixate on one thing for a while sometimes). but it's not consistent. i used to get stressed about aesthetics and all that, but i've found my personal happy middle ground is just drawing and over time refining at least one drawing. whether that means lineart, colorings with my markers or somethign else, shading, etc. and if i'm motivated without stress, i might even do a spread without realizing.

      This is so nice to hear from another artist :)) I’ve recently been worried about cohesiveness in my sketchbook, and I wanted spreads to look aesthetic and put together. But it actually stops me from drawing most times, so this is a really good tip!! ☺️🤍

    as someone who paints semi-realistic, i always find it hard to stylize an object when i'm painting. even when i intent to stylize it, i ended up following the photo reference to its detail like i usually do. stylized-cartoony-cute arts have their own charm, i always love and admire them despite not being able to make them. the ability to translate complicated detail and textures into more simplified drawing, to use bright pastel colors, oh how i wish to be able to at least try it. don't ever feel down about ur art, normies will be normies and say such normies stuff lol. as someone whose been following you for a while, i can tell from afar if a drawing is made by you. keep up the good work! ❤

    • @sourgreendolly7685
      @sourgreendolly7685 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes! At my most consistent, I can see that I learned something each session. Just from one day to the next, the difference was crazy!
      Sometimes it's a double edged sword for me because it feels like that progress is all lost but I think people pick things back up faster than we think so I try to remember that.

    • @inablackout1539
      @inablackout1539 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sourgreendolly7685 During my personal art journey, I have looked back at previous pages. My sketchbooks usually last about three months. In my current sketchbook, I can see that just a week ago I was struggling with perspective. And I've improved since then. But I've noticed that I progress and pick up on things faster.
      Also, I notice that some artists especially beginners feel that their sketchbooks are kind of trash. I struggle with this and maybe you have too, but (this is for everyone out there) sketchbooks are where your supposed to practice art. It isn't supposed to be aesthetic all the time.
      But I found a solution that works for some people I know. Have two sketchbooks. One for practice and one for great art pieces.

    • @inablackout1539
      @inablackout1539 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sourgreendolly7685 I want to add some more to this: sometimes your art will look somehow worse on some days than on others. You might have been able to draw excellently one day and then the next everything you make sucks. I've been through that and continue to go through that. Progress is not a straight line forward. It's not like leveling up Pokemon. Your best will look different each day.
      Something that has really helped me feel better about my art is that I stopped really caring so much. Or rather, I chose what I wanted to care about. I'm not sure if that makes sense. I've just learned to understand that perfection and progress mean different things to different people.

    Good tip from my Dad when it comes to whatever it is you're doing in life: Don't compete against others - always only ever try to outdo yourself.
    Translation: Avoid the comparison game.
    Thing is, if you go around worrying about what everyone else is thinking or doing, or how much better they're doing and setting that "thing" you envy or admire as the standard to go for, you'll only ever turn out as good as everyone else, IF that. It's also incredibly draining and becomes an extra weight to carry around, and turns into a real distraction and headache.
    My Dad always told me to just worry about myself and the job I'm doing, because that's the best I can do and I'm offering something others aren't simply by nature of being a unique, indivudal person placed on this earth by God to fulfill a plan that was very specifically designed for me...not everyone else. That and I'm not really accomplishing anything by worrying about others, so there's really no point to it (thanks for the reality check, Dad). He's held this philosophy his whole life - simply doing the absolute most and best he is capable of doing, being responsible, and not comparing himself to others - and he's come to be very successful and happy in his field of work.
    Anyway - sorry for the lecture. Hope this helps someone. Cheers.

I'm sure I'll need it again later still but absolutely right. It's such an easy thing to forget when everything worldly is trying to make people feel like they have to compare and compete, but that's not the plan for us all.

    I'm now realizing, I think the artstyle thing is my problem 😅 as you also said, I feel like I have to draw realistically, or in a certain way in order for people to even like my art. I've always been attracted to more anime styles, but always avoided them because some of my past friends made fun of the style and how generic it is for people to do. But I think I should just embrace it, the only times my art looked more anime than average were the times I actually really liked my art. The way I have fun is when I draw my family in a silly and wiggly style which is really easy to use because you don’t rely on it being neat you make it messy because it’s the type of style for when it is neat it just looks as if I have no skills but that’s how I distance away from people because the people who draw super realistic and good are usually famous or popular so my style makes people think that I don’t really know how to draw very good because I don’t erase lines that aren’t straight or curved it just stays there as a memory that I actually remember (I can’t remember many things even if it happened the same day) and because of that it makes me happy that I’m having fun and I am not stressing about it being good.

    Yes!!! Gotta keep it fun. Definitely making your own sketchbooks is super rewarding. I've been using the leftover cut sections of my signatures (9 x 21 cm) sections and making some smaller sketchbooks with those. I'll use them when I'm waiting for food at a restaurant, or before the waiter gets to your table for a drink, the bus, or other random from life observations. But since they're so small and they're the leftovers of my bigger books I'm freed up to draw anything in them without as much pressure. So switching between the two kinds of sketchbooks help keep things fresh and fun.

    The second is more messy and quicker and much less finished. Like even with sketching. Also, usually when sketching for fun, I'm paying more attention to youtube and often pause. I usually stop sketching/drawing for fun before it becomes tiring/not fun.
    I only learned to regularly get into the first mode in 2019.

    I started art as an adult after a lifetime of "I can't draw" so I super struggle with white page paralysis so I often want an idea of a subject before I pick up my sketchbook but since my ability is still pretty limited it is hard to pick something that is fun, not overwhelmingly hard, and still hopefully can push me to grow. It is slightly rough to start art as an adult because it is extra hard to not be too hard on myself for my mistakes and it is a struggle sometimes to be painfully aware how expensive some supplies were so they become too precious to just play with; though I try to unlearn that kind of mindset lately.
    Question, if you were starting art now at the age you are now, how would you learn in a way that doesn't kill the fun?

    • @fuzonzord9301
      @fuzonzord9301 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      Why use expensive supplies when you can't draw? You can just use an office printer paper and pretty cheap pencils/gel pens - it's just important for them to work smoothly so that using them wouldn't be unpleasant. I use about 16 cheap 100 page sketchpads per year and for a long time my main tool were 0,4 Euro gel pens. I only started using more expensive quality materials when some people started being interested in obtaining originals of my works.
      IMO getting momentum and fun and self-expression is more important for beginners than pushing oneself. The reality is that regardless of how much you're going to push yourself, you won't get good for a long time and getting good usually isn't fun so if you can't enjoy drawing badly, you're not going to get anywhere. That is unless you're a masochist.

      im going through what you described. the way I tackle this problem (white page scaries) is I write a quote in the middle of the page -something positive. or I just do a big mark somewhere in the center with a bright color. that way brain registers the page as 'already ruined'. its much easier to draw after that step.

      What helps me is to turn on music that matches the feeling of what I'm drawing. My sketches are more dynamic and I enjoy it more with less thinking and more feeling, which the music really helps with. I have playlists based on emotions and other themes.
      Also, drawing imaginary creatures is pretty great, because you have so much freedom. You can make them ridiculous, creepy, cute, etc. You don't have to worry as much about anatomy, and you won't rely heavily on references. It may help you find your art style. I always enjoyed sketching most when I had no plan, started drawing anyway, and ended up with a neat little creature that no one's ever seen before.
      Best of luck on your art journey! ❤

    Thanks for the advice, I'm deffinately saving this video for later ❤

    Hey Jel, its' great to see you slowly starting to upload again recently. Loved hearing this talk a ton. I slowly myself have been getting back into practicing art myself in my sketchbook. I discovered tipless pencils recently, instead of tips they use nib attachments like a stylus. It surprisingly draws really well and affordable to. Probably my new fav art tool and would continue to use them in the long run when I art. I have been slowly working on different things to draw to get better so I can truly start on my world build project I wanna start doing.

    Ive recently started my first sketchbook in years, and i have been dedicating a bit of space on each page to journal my thoughts, something that made me happy that day, etc.
    Its pretty therapeutic to put things in writing and transforms a sketchbook into more of an art journal. I look forward to flipping through my own sketchbooks again in a few years and reminisce on who i was back then and what was happening in my life.
    Maybe this is something others will want to try too 😊 happy artmaking!

    I really loved drawing, but as I grew older it became work related then it slowly became a matter of always creating something better than the previous one.
    I took a break and when I came back I told myself "I wanna make it easy for myself and just have fun".
    Which was a horrible mistake, bc I wrongly thought this meant I should draw easy things.
    Nope, to me easy is super boring and it made me question if I even liked drawing.
    Turns out I like to torture myself with trying to create challenging stuff lol
    The difference is the mindset, now I'm not going with the intention to outdo myself and put the pressure on making "something good".
    Now it's just "look at this crazy thing, what if I tried it too?"
    And it becomes fun, bc I'm able to laugh over wonky attempts, and being able to clearly see where I messed up motivates me to try again.
    So yeah, try to find what feels good/right for you, it's different for everyone and if it works for you, then it isn't wrong.

    Something i find that happens to a lot of people, and even myself, is that you draw a lot and sketch a lot, but not in an actual sketch book but rather on maybe random school papers or just random papers in general. Something you could do, is simply just cut out those drawings and paste them in an actual sketch book! So you still have those doodles and such but in an environment that you actually want them in, and after some time, you might even start drawing in that sketch book directly, since you already have all those other doodles and sketches in that book. It gives yourself freedom, and it makes it fun and makes you want to go home to cut out those sketches and put them in your book!

    I've done 2 things to help myself be more creative, one is to make tiny daily doodles in the monthly pages of my planner (since I didnt use those anyway) and the other was to make a generator list that I could use with my dice (I play a lot of TTRPGs) where I made lists of mediums and topics that I enjoy/want to work on and then some topics had their own sub-lists, so they function as daily art prompts I can roll to determine when I want to sit down for it and dont have particular things I want to do. I saw someone decide that they'd draw daily and if they didnt have something they wanted to do or try they'd draw a chicken cuz they loved chickens, I think that also is a good thing, having a go-to topic to fall back to just to keep going.
    Also I love the raccoons you were drawing in this video, they are adorable!

    Art is a sliding scale of pride and self contempt for me. What I found helps me with artist block is finding lovely artists online like this one. I'll watch a few videos and then draw my own version of something they made that I find inspiring. I always include the artists site, insta, whatever they use. That way when i go back and find these pieces that are very different from my norm, i have the artist cited! Never find shame in pulling inspiration for practice! Just remember to credit your inspo and enjoy exploring new techniques that maybe you hadnt considered previously

    You talking about making it an addiction made me realize something. I've started to hold myself back with a lot of things after my partner told me on several occasions that whatever I was doing was an addiction. He's not trying to be mean, he's been addicted to a lot of unhealthy things in his life, so he recognizes the patterns and mentions them. He does word it in a way that makes me think I'm doing something wrong though, so I've stopped a lot of my creative pursuits because of it. This was a good reminder that being addicted to something isn't always a bad thing. It can give you the necessary motivation to get things done that you wouldn't have otherwise.

    One time in middle school, I experienced a specific art block where I didn't want to draw faces because I was frustrated with how they were coming out. Was still drawing but no faces for weeks. After almost 2 months I draw a face on a charger and I was shocked at how much better it was than anything I've done before.

    I like the term "Procrasti-drawing." I've seen so many you tubers that only draw manga-lisa frank art. There is no individual style from one to the next. The same goes for comic book style art. Everything looks the same. What makes a artist unique is they are able to consistently create in a style that is new and never before seen. This takes muscle memory which takes practice and evolving over time. The beauty of a sketch a day with different subjects and themes forces you to break out of the manga mold. I love your raccoons. As you were drawing, i thought that a good exercise in observation might be to imagine a raccoon (or other subject) and without looking at a real one or someone else's rendition of a raccoon, just sketch what your mind conjures to be a raccoon. Where you are finished, and satisfied that it looks like a raccoon, find a photo of a real raccoon, and draw another one in the same pose as your first drawing using the photo as a reference to observe things like stripes or feet. Once you understand the observed elements, put away the photo and your 2 previous sketches, and draw a third raccoon in a different pose that incorporates the learned stripes and feet. Redraw it exaggerating the size of the feet or other elements you find interesting or amusing. Tomorrow pick another object. (Roll a die or pick a card that imposes randomizing themes such as animal vegetable mineral, indoor, outdoor, next day repeats, 1-week repeats, 1 month repeats, 100-day repeats etc until you find your own style.

    I'm currently on a journey to draw regularly again and to completely change the look of my art. Here's some advice I'd like to add on!
    - if you find yourself watching tv or scrolling through social media for hours a day, set daily limits. This can be done through settings on tv and your phone or through an extension on your internet browser. When you want to kill time and have run out of time on these apps, you'll be basically forced to invest in your hobbies to pass the time.
    - if you get embarrassed about the idea of other people seeing you draw something new or bad, then have a separate sketchbook for "experimental" pieces. I did this when my dog passed away and i struggled to pick up a pencil & no longer feel that shame.
    - figure out what gets you in a headspace for drawing and try to invest more of your free time into those things! For example, i have cut back on gaming videos to watch more art videos
    - if you ever catch yourself shaming yourself as an artist, make addressing that negativity your top priority

    I feel that i lost my joy of drawing when i started working and going to college. I think i began having that mindset of "everything i do should benefit work or be monetized" so i slowly abandoned drawing without even noticing. I still did some freelance illustration but it just wasn't the same... Also social media had an impact too, i would always compare myself to others and thinking everything i created should be instagrammable and that if didn't attract likes, it wasn't good enough. I started going away from my art because my mind shifted to drawing for others and not for myself. When I was in school, i would draw during classes, when i got home i would draw more, it was my whole life! And back then i did it because I loved it, not because i needed to show it off somewhere and expect something in return. We should do that more, for ourselves, without this pressure of monetizing everything. This video made me want to start sketching again and having fun drawing again! Not everything needs to be work :)

In drawing i usually try to make it perfect and i once had a style i enjoyed but an artist on a video said something that people do in art that is bad and i did it so i dropped that style, i had a crisis on my style, and I tried to put all the things that i "learned" together and it just became a big mess and I didn't wanna draw again. And I wanted to be accepted by doing really good realistic art, but deep down i really wanted to do a Silly simple style :) Now I am drawing exactly what i wish to. Tysm! :D

They forced us to draw flowers or specific themes which I just wasn't interested in, I never got to draw stuff that was actually fun to draw so I stopped doing it in my free time because it was getting really draining and boring. There was a lot more about that class that took away a lot of my passion for art and made me hate it but I won't get into that here. I took a fine art course for a year before moving to animation and never felt so unmotivated in my life. I knew about the no cartoon rule and drew everything i didnt like, i got great grades but i remember my tutor comparing my personal and college sketchbooks and being surprised by how much more life mine had. He said he usually disliked anime adjacent stuff because the students would refuse to experiment, he wasnt exactly fond of it in mine but it was interesting and after that I added my own flair to things again, never had any complaints. I hated drawing by the end of the year but animation really clicked, its a little less of a constant rush for creative ideas because a single project takes longer and has a wider variety of tasks to engage with, some technical, some designing etc. Sometimes just trying to draw draw draw, especially as work, can wear you down, and trying new related things to drawing can give you breathing space. Recently got back into sketchbooking and having it as my own project no one will see is like being 13, coming home and drawing my ocs over and over again lol.

    I think for myself (and others) I used to buy nice but spendy sketchbooks and would neglect them because I put really high expectations on what I draw in them. I was wayy too precious with them and felt every page needed to be a finished, fully rendered masterpiece. Once I changed my mindset and realized it’s just freakin’ paper, I relaxed more and enjoyed the process again. Setting unreasonably high expectations and thinking the way I used to really hinders creativity and even heightened my anxiety lol. I also stopped comparing my sketch books to others. That was another big roadblock for me, I felt like my SB needed to be on other peoples level and it only further hindered my creativity.
    I draw. I make tons of mistakes. I doodle when I’m feeling a block. Once I dialed down the pressure, I truly ignited my excitement to practice & learn in my books.
    Great video!!

    Despite being interested in art my whole life and starting to draw more around 12 yr old, I had a lot of fear and not much imagination or creativity. Idk why exactly, I think some of it really was just me, but its also worth noting I had a narcissistic bully of a sister and my parents never really tried to nurture and encourage that in me either. So I've never related to the whole concept of "art was so free and fun and imaginative when you were a kid"
    Building technical skill and confidence and trying to be more creative (creativity is a muscle after all!) I definitely enjoy art more now than I did when I was a beginner. That said I still feel like I'm lacking creativity compared to your average artist. I know its not good to compare yourself, but I really feel like I'm very unusually dull amongst most artists 😂
    But I'm slowly branching out, and trying more and more to start doing the sort of stuff i've always wanted to!

    I never knew the feeling of being excited to draw, it's almost always pure stress because I suck, every drawing looks like absolute shit and I always end up erasing everything, my sketchbook has like 200 pages or something and only like 7 have drawings on then because it's rare for me to make a half decent sketch, sometimes I ask myself if I really like drawing, it doesn't feel like other things I love like playing my favorite video games or listening to music, there's almost no enjoyment or discovery in this and somehow I keep coming back to it
