I went up to the Crown during my first ever visit to NY in 1990. Back then there was no advance tickets or anything. It was simply a case of being on the first ferry in the morning and running as fast as possible to join the queue to get to the Crown. The intertwined spiral stairs and the views of the amazing engineering and then the views from the crown will live with me forever.

My wife and I was just there last week. We got caught in the snow on the jersey side cause my torch lighter wasn’t allowed thru security. Well it was a hundred dollars lighter so I wouldn’t leave it behind. So we went the day after where the weather was clear again. I’m so proud to have been there. That was amazing. I've only been to the Statute of Liberty once in like the 6th grade (waaaay before 9/11) and I realize that despite the security and tourist hassle, I need to go again! That cloudy image of the Statute of Liberty is so haunting....how many immigrants saw that exact same image on a cold snowy NYC day 100 years ago?? FASCINATING! Thanks for sharing!!

This is a classic NYC landmark in winter! I miss the statue of liberty and the winter cold a lot! I went to the statue of liberty in May of 1996 and went up to the pedestal with my cousin and brother and waited in that cold spring afternoon in that line for almost 40 minutes and took great pictures inside and outside the statue and of the NYC skyline and of the Twin towers of the World Trade Center. Then we went to the Ellis island museum and had lunch there! Great memories! Thanks for sharing this awesome video!

It might be corny these days, but thinking of all the poor, tired, huddled masses, yearning to be free, who passed that lady with the torch and were filled with hope is very moving to me.

I went with my sister, mom and Aunt right before we went to England to see where my grandpa and his parents were from. It was really neat to do a backwards version of their journey. To stand where they were processed, to then go see the house my granddad was born in, the cotton factory where his mom worked. We went in April and it was still a bit snowy. I didn't know how far in advance you had to reserve for the crown, so we only got to go to the pedestal, but we thought it was great. Also, we never saw the elevator. ROFL.

Though my family and I didn’t immigrate to America. Seeing the registry room part of the video made me teary thinking of when I was only 12 and hearing for the first time “Welcome to Australia” when my parents, siblings and I first arrived in Australia. It’s a moment I will never forget, at that time I didn’t know much about Australia or even the city we were going to be living in. ❤️❤️

I am very blessed to have worked at the Statue of Liberty during the summer of my junior year in high school with the National Park Service. I have been everywhere there is to go on Liberty Island. One of my job duties was to cut the grass using the various riding lawn mowers along with many other things. I have been in the basement & all over this magnificent hollow structure. I have also given the duty of going where very few visitors have been allowed to go & that is to climb the very narrow stairway way up to the Crown. Traveling up that one-way ladder was exciting and terrifying all into one. Once at the top of the stairway, I opened the door to the torch area to inspect the lights for the 4th of July holiday celebration. I had to inspect all of the lights & to notify the Park Ranger supervisor if there were any lights that would not come on. Once that duty was concluded, I returned down the stairway backwards on the one-way ladder. A feat that I will forever remember. Everyday was completely different working there meeting and talking to people from all over the world that come to visit the Statue of Liberty. Beautiful memories of a wonderful summer job including visiting Ellis Island before it was completely renovated.

Always wanted to go to the crown. When it reopened after hurricane Sandy, my son encouraged us to do the trip. Tickets purchased 3 months out. Son, granddaughter and I did the climb- from pedestal base to the crown! Awesome! I found the manifest papers from the early 1900’s when my parents came to America. Mom was a baby, her papers are handwritten. Dad was 16, his are typed. They are a treasure!

Our first visit to New York City last December. Didn’t do the crown but had tickets to the pedestal which was well worth it. I would suggest getting tickets to the pedestal at the very least even if you don’t do the crown. The views from there are worth it alone. If you don’t want to take the stairs you can do what we did and wait in line for the lift. Ellis Island definitely worth going to. As well as standing in the place where so many immigrants passed through, there is so much fascinating history displayed in text and photographs throughout the museum.

Actually the best way to see both the statue and Ellis island is go to battery park and there should be a stonewall/ fort thing and there will be a booth/ hut selling legitimate tickets for the statue and Ellis island. Now they aren’t cheap but whatever it’s legitimate and legal. The dock they will point you in the right direction for the boat. It’s a lot easier than going online and having to reserve those spots. Now the crown on the other hand forget it unless you either want to shell out the money or be put on a massive waiting list especially when they only do about 200 tickets for that a day. And honestly no elevator and thousands of steps to climb to get to the crown not worth it. Ellis island though is worth it as you can sit in the seat of the inspectors and imagine a sea of people just waiting to try to get into America in the 1800’s. That and the museum really worth the trip. The sections closed off are the rejection quarters (people who were rejected entry due to various reasons but never illness) and the back of island where the insane asylum was and the illness wards.

Yes, it's the same company. Statuecruises willcall requires you to go to that little armory. It's the only legit company.

Easily one of my fav videos you have done. Top 3- This vid, classic/antique subway car vid, $100 grilled cheese vid.
I'm from west coast, been to nyc a number of times, but only once did I visit the SoL. I was in 7th grade, and won a contest via the Los Angeles Dodgers fan appreciation day contest. I won a trip for 2 to the World Series. I was lucky because the series was the Yankees vs the Dodgers. I say lucky because the american league championship was between the Yankees and Kansas City Royals. What city to choose? Duh! Anyways, I remember climbing the stairs to the crown. Back then (as others have mentioned) you just did it. There were no extra tickets you had to buy or anything like that. It was also at a time as the guide in the crown said that you could look down and see the entire way down through the stairs. I don't remember the view at all. Maybe I was too small/short to see. I remember how tight the staircase was & cramped the crown was. I went up by myself. My aunt at this point was in her 60s(?) and did not want to do the stairs. I was this 13 year old with the energy of a lightning rod so making that climb was nothing.
And yes, whenever I see Ellis Island I think of the Godfather!

We were here in February 2020 and it was amazing the weather was great and the views were stunning in the crown👍😎
We are from the Netherlands in Europe and we found only one Smits and only one Masselink on the walls of Ellis island……
    Good memories 👍👍👍
Nice videos also I have learned a lot of things from your videos before we came to New York

I can't believe there's a 2 month waiting list. I haven't been to the Statue in 25 years, but back in the day, we used to just go there on a whim, completely spur of the moment, and go right on up. Of course, there was no war on terror yet, so security was very minimal.

Last time I visited (2010) the museum was inside the pedestal. Access to the pedestal was 'free' (probably included in the ticket price for the boat). Came unprepared so no crown tickets.

Oh my goodness...we may have to do this in April when we go! I don't care for heights or small spaces lol but I feel like it would be worth it! I've seen it from the water & been to Ellis Island but it's been years so I'm excited to go back. My great grandpa came from Germany when he was 15 & went through there so it's pretty amazing to see that place. 😍 Thank you for the awesome video as always Jon! The video quality was top notch👌 New camera?

As of May 2022 crown access is currently closed 😞 not sure if they’ll open it back up. Would appreciate it if you could update the pinned comment with this info as it would be helpful for others!

Great vid jon. Loved the portrait ya gave of the beautiful and stunning lady. Wish one day I can be there. I changemy mind regarding that spot thanks to your video. I thoughtit was a waste of time due to its touristy nature but now I realize it's a must. Thanks to both of you fosuch an exquisite ride. Regards from Caracas 🙋♥🗽
