    Lyrics
Words have come from men and mouths
But I can't help thinking that I've heard the wrong crowd
When all the water is gone my job will be too
And I'm trying to leave something behind
Money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
Oh the future ahead is broken and red
But I'm trying to leave something behind
This whole world is a foreign land
We swallow the moon but we don't know our own hand
We're running with the case but we ain't got the gold
Yet we're trying to leave something behind
My friends I believe we are at the wrong fight
And I cannot read what I did not write
I've been to his house, but the master is gone
But I'd like to leave something behind
There is a beast who has taken my brain
You can put me to bed but you can't feel my pain
When the machine has taken the soul from the man
It's time to leave something behind
Oh money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
Oh the future ahead is already dead
So I'm trying to leave something behind
I got this feeling that I'm still at the shore
And pockets don't know what it means to be poor
I can get through the wall if you give me a door
So I can leave something behind
Oh wisdom is lost in the trees somewhere
You're not going to find it in some mental gray hair
It's locked up from those who hurry ahead
And it's time to leave something behind
Oh money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
When my son is a man he will know what I meant
I was just trying to leave something behind
I was just trying to leave something behind

I am a musician of 65 years who has lost his wife to cancer and now faces the same fate. I will leave a son behind. I have played hundreds if not thousands of songs in folk and rock. These are the most powerful words I have ever heard. Thank you Sean Rowe for this beautiful poetry and powerful song, it has touched my soul forever.

Having been born with Asperger's Syndrome, The Accountant was the first movie I have seen that has put what we experience every day on public display, albeit with the usual Hollywood razzle dazzle. Still, I thank Ben Affleck for the way he portrayed the character. When I was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2006, I felt as though I'd leave life without ever seeing an honest account of who we are and what we live. I was one of six locals (a beautiful young elementary school teacher, a volunteer firefighter, a city police officer, a state wildlife officer, a co-worker in my office at the airbase and myself) who were all diagnosed with the same disease, at the same time. We all went through chemo and radiation at the same time. Of the six of us, I was the oldest. Of the six of us, I am the only one left. This is the second time I have had to deal with survivor's guilt. Why me? Why was I left? This song says it, the feeling I was left with, that I had to leave something good behind. I needed to do something to justify being the sole survivor. So I volunteer, I give, I try to understand things I never listened to before. And I would like to leave something behind. Something good.

Micheal, you have such a beautiful spirit. You have nothing to justify though, the world is simply a better place with people like you in it. Sending wishes and hugs. Be gentle with yourself, you´re doing the best you can.

In Dec 2017, I went to South Africa to care for my terminally ill father who had liver cancer. Over 12 days I cared for him. I walked him, showered him, fed him and hugged him tightly. On the night of his death, I helped the Congolese night nurse on her first night. Struggling to breathe it took 20 minutes for my dad to pass. Thankfully I managed to call the doctor who administered a tranquiliser to end his struggle. I saw my dad's head violently shake twice whilst my hand was on his forehead as he took his last breath. When I listen to this song it takes me back to that moment. The moment death was taking my father but how much love was in the room. I remember shouting to him "I love you dad" and him giving a small grin. After his death, I dicovered that he had kept every e-mail correspondence between his children ever written which he had carefully labelled with our names and put them in chronological order starting at the year 2000. It was his gift to us, to leave something behind that we would cherish. In all, I have 4 full folders of our messages to one another. In life, all that matters is that you live fiercely. Never be tempted to hold in high esteem that which is replicated. Time and love are all that matter. You can always make money, you can never make time. You have to be wise in how you spend your time. Life is long enough if you know how to use it. Short for those who don't. So I implore you to embrace death so that you can truly live.

I am sorry for your loss. The hole in your heart will never go away. And the hurt won't stop, you'll just get used to living differently. But I am so glad to hear that your father left something behind for you. And more than the emails, I'm sure he has left you with a lifetime of wonderful experiences and cherished memories. He has also left you. Through you and your children and your siblings and your bloodline, he will have left generations to continue the good work he did in his life. Y'all will build a thriving family, a collection of stories that will be told out over the decades and centuries. Through you, your father will be infinite and live on forever. Good luck, and God bless.

Yes...to be whole is to be one with life and one with death because they are but two sides of the same coin of consciousness. You have found much wisdom and have shared its gold, and in the end, that is all we can hope to do in our time upon this wonderful planet earth. And so, thank you for your heart's gift to this human being and humanity, and also, to the world. All gifts given from the commentary of a great song....gh.

I watched the accountant for a second time yesterday. I was surprised that this song came so strong to me like I was hearing it for the first time. I send me straight to my fathers final moments. Dying with cancer was hard and my father still struggled to honor his own father. He said to me "I want you to honor your legacy. I leave this family to you to provide leadership and direction" My father did not die as a man of means, but he kept his library and home office to his dying day. On his office table were 3 neck ties. I dressed him in one, gave my only brother the other one and wore the last one during his funeral.
    I miss my father!

@@seanrowemusic Your voice and your words are so powerful, it took an entire movie and one righteous samurai to set it up properly. I am fascinated to read Mburu's story, how his perspective had shifted. It is a testament to how music can influence us, but only with our permission, and to good songwriting, when so many recognize it. Recognition well deserved, Sean.

I cannot begin to tell you how much this song means to me. I have played this a minimum of once a month for years, and will continue to do so. For various reasons, I was never married and don't have children. So for years I have asked, so what was all my hard work for? My legacy will be to leave 5 charities some funding, and some very close friends that I got to enjoy life with - that is what I will leave behind. When I pass there will be no funeral, only a party for my long-time friends. I have selected songs to be played for each stage of my life, and "To Leave Something Behind" will be the final song because it defines who I have become over my life. Thank you for this amazing gift.

As a pastor I've conducted many memorial services over the years. I've always been taken back by those who stood to speak about what the deceased meant to them. Knowing the person's life and the humility they walked in, I had no doubt they would have been taken back by what others said their life had meant to them. Hero's are most often the first person to feel like they are anything but. But for others their lives had deep meaning and lasting significance. @@carlknox6802

We are everyday people. Most of us are not extravagantly wealthy, there won't be streets named for us, libraries built in our honor. We leave something much more valuable than a monetary inheritance. We leave our bloodline, children, grandchildren and if Weare fortunate we may be blessed to meet our great grandchildren before we are called home. God and family are our most valuable blessings.

I told her that I never get two pieces of pie for dessert, but only one, so that memory aid didn't make sense to me. I’m here because my father scent me this video. Today is my birthday and ever since I saw the Accountant, I always thought as though this song was meant for my father. Two years ago, to the day, my father was diagnosed with a rare brain disease. He was forced to go on disability but I thought he always hoped he’d go back to work eventually. Meanwhile I took care of him. Fast forward a few weeks, my father asks what we did for my birthday since he could not remember. It was hard but I told him the truth, we didn’t celebrate it. It was scary seeing how much he had cried that day. And last year he broke his arm, I was prepared to go another year without celebrating. But alas we actually did, even though I still think we shouldn’t have. He was getting worse but I think it made him happy that we had done something, something really special for me. This year… my father got diagnosed with cancer. Although I told him all I wanted was a small cake, in truth, all I want is for him to get better. From time to time he‘ll tell me or ask me what more can he bring into the world. My dad used to work as a machinist, making parts for airplanes, space shuttle, and his favorite was firearms. He may not think it, but I think he’s leaving a lot behind, great job dad! You are loved, remember that. Every time I hear this song, I’m thinking of you.

When you find a song that makes sense of what you feel after great loss and explains things better than I ever could for those that remain. Watching him sing it and then watching with the lyrics displayed made me shudder when the line about his son finally understanding what it was he’s been doing.
He finally knows what I meant is heart wrenching to me.
Then it brings me to father and son by Cat Stevens when he says you’re young and that’s your fault.
I may or may not wait for that day.
My father may or may not believe that I understand now but I love him for always being there for me and protecting me even when I was unaware and didn’t know what he meant.
I’m just trying to leave something behind.

I've been listening to indie (non-mainstream) for almost 20 years, but there is always new music to hear. I always loved the song by Harry Chapin 'Remember When the Music' and the line; "imagine...all the melodies I'm missing, and all the magic words..." It makes me ponder about all the beauty in life we've yet to discover. It reminds you that life is always full of beautiful surprises, and that you'll never stop discovering them if you never stop looking.

A reflection on life's priorities and the desire to leave a lasting legacy. The songwriter acknowledges that they may not know the person well, but they perceive a lack of authenticity or honesty in their actions ("you can't lie to me with all these books that you sell"). The songwriter expresses a reluctance to blindly follow someone or be caught up in worldly pursuits, instead desiring to leave something meaningful behind.
The lyrics touch upon the idea that words can come from both wise and foolish individuals, and it can be challenging to discern the truth amidst different voices ("but I can't help thinking that I have heard the wrong crowd"). The mention of water running out and the impending loss of the songwriter's job suggests a sense of urgency and the need to make a lasting impact before it's too late.
The song emphasizes the contrast between the value of money and love, highlighting that love is more precious than material possessions. The reference to a broken and red future implies a world in turmoil or conflict, further emphasizing the songwriter's desire to make a positive difference.
The lyrics convey a sense of detachment from the world, with the songwriter feeling like a stranger in a foreign land. The line "we swallow the moon, but we do not know our own hand" suggests a disconnect between humanity's accomplishments and its understanding of itself. Despite this, the songwriter acknowledges the pursuit of a goal ("we're running with the case") even if the desired outcome is not yet attained.
There is a recognition that the world is changing, and the songwriter feels compelled to resist the negative impact of technology or machinery on human experiences ("when the machine has taken the soul from the man"). The song urges the listener to leave something meaningful behind, suggesting that there is more to life than material wealth.
The lyrics express a desire for wisdom and a frustration with society's focus on external appearances and superficial markers of age ("wisdom is lost in the trees somewhere... not gonna find it in some mental gray hair"). The songwriter contemplates their own mortality and hopes that their son will understand the deeper meaning behind their actions when he becomes a man.
Overall, the song seems to be a reflection on the importance of love, authenticity, and leaving a positive impact on the world, despite the challenges and distractions that life presents.

Wow what a song, so moving. I have listened to it a few times before I realized that I have three good, honest and hard working children and three beautiful grandchildren who I am very proud of, perhaps this is what I will be
    leaving behind.

Was your Dad a believer but possibly not a 'church goer'? Did he leave you with strong and/or pleasant memories? Play the song! It's his funeral. Your memories.

Maybe it's just me as I've been fighting for my son his whole life of nearly 11 years for his right to have me and my family in his life. I try but my eyes betray me every time I listen to these two wonderful songs. Thank you Sean Rowe for the magic you create.

My grandfather died next to me on December 10 2012. He went to sleep as I was taking him to the doctor and he passed away next to me. This reminds me of him so much cause he taught me everything I know. He left the best things behind for me to teach my kids.

evert beckner it’s not that he left the good things behind. It’s that you pick & choose the good to pass along to your children. Then, hopefully they pick and choose the good to pick up and pass along to their children.
It’s a cycle. When your grandchildren pass it along. Only then will we know if your grandfather passed along the good.
As you share with us. I’m sure he did!!!

Scott Burns my father died December 4 1978.
I don’t remember when my grandfather passed away. I was but a very young man when he stuck a 357 Ruger in his mouth. Pulled the trigger. That didn’t kill him. He went to the closet and pulled out his 308 rifle stuck it in his mouth & pulled the trigger. Once again it did not Kill him. If nothing else he was determined. He grabbed his 12 gauge walked out to the tree. Put the butt of the gun the tree an the Barrel in his mouth.
That was some day. I had spent the week at their house during the summer.
Oh by the way. The third shot did kill him!!!
