    I think people have become averse to correction because we are not doing it correctly! These tips on proper leash correction were really helpful.

      I think they are averse to correction because they think love will conquer all. If your dog is unmanageable his life will be limited with no ability to be taken around with you. The dog will have a safer and better life if it's reliably obedient, it listens to it's owner and is clear on consequences.

    Hi Nate, thanks for including other trainers in your videos. I love to hear their nuggets of dog training as well. I appreciated how you both emphasized the lifestyle of training our dogs is ongoing not just from 8 weeks to “trained”. I just got back from Mexico and leaving Jedi for the first time. He was home in great care by my niece who did practice some commands with him, but very informal compared to my sessions with him, and he was a little rusty…choosing not to comply when expected. We’re brushing back up on skills and what’s expected. Consistency is definitely the most important thing I have learned on this journey. Cute little note, while away we FaceTimed Jedi and he followed my commands through the iPad and that’s thanks to the great engagement we have built as a result of the knowledge you have so kindly shared with me and this community…so thanks Nate!

    6 weeks on with a 3 month old Shepsky and I'm going through my days like a total zombie. I donnt think there's a cure for separation anxiety other than time. It's a very powerful and overwhelming emotion for them and my fella never stops wailing all night(in crate).. Until I capitulate around 6am and take him up to my bed, exhausted! He gets walked 3 times a day.. 2.5 hrs daily. A friend, who has 2 dogs, told me the first 3 months are really tough and the one night it just stops. Dear Lord, let that be soon.
    Thanks for the video and best of luck.

    Regarding crating to stop destructive behavior...My destructo dog was a little houdini who could open her crate from the inside. I had to use thumb clips to keep her locked in! But it did provide her a calm place. It worked best when both dogs were crated next to each other. After a couple months the crate became the den they went to sleep in on their own, no locking required.

    Providing their own bed helps too. We use baby crib mattresses so they're comfortable, they're easy to wash with the crib sheets, and less likely to be destroyed by the dog versus the cheap beds that fall apart in one wash.

    Another great video, Nate, and again, one where I gathered more tidbits even to the areas I thought I had covered, You never know when that special nuance will provide that extra benefit. I really appreciated Ms. Lafferty making a point of training the dog in front of you (paraphrased). I relate to this in that I have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi who is extremely intelligent and trainable; however, he will never have the ability to perform certain maneuvers as flashy as a Malinois or other high drive dog. That's ok. We work with our abilities and have a lot of fun.

    Do you have a video you could point me to for treating anxious aggression? I have a 7 month old Belgian Groenendael/Laekenois that loves people but very randomly will have a bad reaction when on leash to some men. He approaches the men, accepts a pat and then after 5 seconds he turns and becomes extremely aggressive towards them and he just bit one. Outside this behaviour he LOVES people and it's extremely unpredictable who, how and when it may happen to figure out how to correct it.

      He believes this is fun for whatever reason…Try correcting him and adding another small step…like a place, giving him something else to do or chew, or calling him to you and rewarding him for doing that thing….basically trying to communicate to him this is not a game we’re playing but this over here (whatever you’re calling him to do or offering for him) is a lot of fun! You can also stay right by that thing he’s messed with after you correct him once, up your ante a bit with the next one (in other words, a bit more strongly making a point with this chair that you do not want the dog to play with it) and you’ll see very quick learning take place.

    Hi Nate, firstly your videos are the best and very helpful and your the only one to reply to me so here I go with another request of advice from your vast knowledge of doggy issues. I have an issue which I’m trying to find an answer to,Toby my
    2 year old un- neutered border collie, my choice not to neuter as I think it’s barbaric. Recently the roaming behaviour as escalated and when in local park the sniffing is his main priority and everything else, training, play, begins to fail in favour for the scents. I know it’s a natural behaviour as he’s trying to track down females in heat and I don’t blame him I would to😂. Do you have any idea as to whether this behaviour will diminish with time like many other phases he has gone through whilst growing up. Many thanks from over here in the uk.
    Gavin.

    • @adrialafferty2162
      @adrialafferty2162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stick with your training…when he goes to sniff, show him YOU will allow him to sniff when it’s appropriate but not just every single time he desires it. Use a heel command (or any command) and work with him using those drives he has so strongly. Then, you can release him to sniff on your terms. After some training and enforcement of that…he will look to you for guidance and understand you’ll allow him to do all of that but when you ask for obedience, he needs to work with you on that and not ignore you. Just take a bit of time and practice and really focus on having him follow the commands and THEN going to sniff.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with the advice that Adria has given. Cheers!

    • @gavinperry6491
      @gavinperry6491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NateSchoemer
      Yes I will be trying that, just keep thinking whether or not having him neutered is the best way to go.
      I’d prefer not to go that route but it’s looking like i may have to, as it will be better for him and me.
      The reason I haven’t is he is fear reactive and I’m scared it will make things worse, here in the uk they now do a implant that’s takes away the testosterone either a six month or twelve month I might have to try that.

    Hey nate, i am picking up a puppy this weekend but i am not sure what the smartest and safest transporting method is, it is a 2 hour drive. I’ve got a 2 seater so there is no way of having him in my backseat with someone watching over him. My car is a ”minivan” with large storage in the back kind of like a shipping van, and i have a cage ready for him when he gets older. I am scared to just put him in the cage of a moving vehicle as that will be his first interaction with a cage and one of the first interactions with me. Am i overthinking this? Or is there a smarter way of doing this?
    Hope this question wasnt too long or weird.. thanks anyway if you respond

    • @NateSchoemer

      I always transport puppies in crates sized for them. Make sure the crate is secured and just big enough for the puppy to stand up, turn around, and lay down. In addition, placing a towel in the crate can help and covering it with a blanket to help keep the pup calm.
      I hope this helps!

    This whole no correction movement makes no sense to me. It seems to stem more from humans projecting their own feelings and behaviours on dogs, instead of actually learning how dogs works. There is a time for positive rewarding and a time for corrections, which most trainers who work with real working dogs like adria realizes.
