I definitely fall into the category of people who got a working line GS before knowing better, but I am also very committed to fulfilling my dogs needs because I have fallen completely in love. This video was very helpful for me. My pup is 6 months old and I’ve already started meeting with a trainer. She’s connecting me with a group who does agility. I will definitely buy some frisbees too!

Hi Nate, I really like how you bring in other experienced trainers to share their expertise, also. I ran across this video just as I am deciding what bloodline of GSD to buy. I was leaning toward a working line, but after listening, I think my situation requires a lower drive GSD. Thank you so much for all your training videos. They are so helpful. You are awesome!

Even the so called “show line” GS can be high drive..I have a boy from X Can and Yumiko (retired) at the Del Cono Sur breeders, and he’s got a ton of big award winning German Shepherds on both sides of his lineage, like national champions, he’s 21-22 weeks old and I am already transitioning to a prong collar because he’s so, so strong already, and despite my constant training since 8 weeks old, I feel like it’s all meaningless in the real world, and I’m also enrolled in professional training, already passed the Star Puppy course, now starting scent and higher level obedience, but he’s definitely a challenge..

Great video Nate. Great find. I found her enthusiasm refreshing here on the internet - a perky, upbeat, energetic, balanced dog trainer.
When referencing the Klimb, she said she's obsessed with another product. It sounded like a Kettle Board or Kittle board. Anyway, if you could clear that up, that would be great. I, like she, you, and most passionate trainers, overtrain and hyperfocus. I've been training animals for 43 years and have found some ways that help me manage my problem. I started to share here, but I got hyperfocused and too wordy. Anyway, I too find keeping sessions short and ending on a good note the ideal, but those goals are often in conflict. If I had to pick, I'd keep the session short rather than end on a good note. I might, like when jumping the gun on distractions, find a face-saving moment and bail, or just end my session before I hit that dreaded point of diminishing returns. Keep up the excellent work. I learn something every time I drop by.

Yes..my 22 wk GS was crate trained the second I brought him home at 8 weeks. At the end of every meal training session, I keep a big portion or jackpot size kibble and say “let’s do your favorite part..crate!” but I can’t even get the sentence out anymore because he’s already jumped into the crate. I’m working on trying to get him to relax on the couch w me, it never lasts as he starts to wander further from the couch and inevitably finds something to destroy or try to run away with..pups are a lot of work!

I hit the jackpot at my humane society. My dog has no known issues besides dog-to-dog food possessiveness. Ideally he wouldn't have that but for everything else that he tolerates I'll take it. He's very dog friendly and even more human friendly. He actually comes to my dog daycare job and has tons of buddies there. He's a 45lb pit mix with a very good, docile personality. (I think with lab and border collie)

Hey Nate! Love the content, love the learning that comes from mistakes from professionals! I loved a recent video of yours that showed us owners an actual agenda of things to train. A problem I’ve seen is just like brief explanations of basic obedience things to teach your dog, but I really enjoyed that you not only gave us things to do, but also showing us how you do it. Would love more content like this and like that one where we have a “list” of things to be working on and seeing how you do those with newer puppies! Love the content though!

    Loved this!! Thank you.
One thing though- many folks use the “dogs are den animals” as a reason to lock them in a crate. Being locked in a small space for long periods of time is not ethical, and not natural for dogs or any animal or human. “Dens” don’t have locked doors…they can leave anytime they choose. As soon as you lock that door, it becomes a prison.
Our dog has two crates, but without doors. He loves to retreat there.
When he was a puppy, we used a large play pen and a large crate attached as a sleeping area, until he was ready to have full access to the house.
We have neighbors who leave their young puppy locked for hours (on average 5-hours) while she cries and whines non stop. We reached out to them and they stopped doing that…but the puppy is now neurotic.

Very good advice on crate training. It will save you emergency run to the vet to get non digestable items out of your dog after a chewing spree. My GS pup was CRRRRAAAAZY at 4 months, got out of the crate a few minutes at a time. By 6 months I didnt need to lock her in, she would put herself there during dinner or to sleep at night. It became her personal den. Now because my dogs are old, I got rid of the crates altogether. That was an adjustment for my GS but she still has her bed to "go place."

Basically the dog should know your on his or her side always.

@6:45 funny enough, I got told the opposite. I was told to get a show-line shepherd with a straight back (avoid the super sloped backs). He's three now, and I have always been frustrated with him, due to his low drive (calling him mid drive would be generous), and mid energy. I'm not going to ever rehome him, but I wanted a german shepherd for their high drive and high energy, but literally everyone said I wouldn't be able to handle it and to get a show-line, that they would be better suited as a pet (which for the average person, they would be). With that being said, I hate him due to the fact that he is no where near what I wanted or expected from a german shepherd and my next one will definitely be a working line

Nate Schoemer question. Which training school do you recommend to take to eventually be coming a master trainer like yourself???

  • @Joey-vy1iu
    @Joey-vy1iu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

As a new dog owner, I can totally relate to the over-training part. As per your guidance, we use their meals as their reward during training. However, as the dog got bigger and bigger, she needed to be fed more and more. This resulted in very long training sessions (15-20 min/3x a day, because big meals). Now it got to the point that she doesn't listen any more and doesn't want to train at all (even if it means she won't get to eat the whole day). How do I fix this and get her back motivated again? And the recommendation is 5 min, but I can't get her to eat enough in 5 min and don't have time to spread it out to like 10 training sessions a day... Would appreciate your thoughts on this!

I do 5-10 mins training before my dogs breakfast and dinner then give the meal to her. I would never expect to deal out the whole meal through training, that sounds painful. My dog knows a great meal is coming after those 2 training sessions. We also do a couple of short random training sessions through the day. If your dog now has a negative association with training try changing your approach initially. Choose one command like 'come', make it fun with lots of praise/games/ high value soft treats. Have the dogs meal ready so afterwards they eat immediately.

First time small breed owner but experienced large breed owner here, I’ve successfully house broken my little guy by limiting his access to the larger home, keeping him contained in one room, then expanded room by room but still not allowed upstairs in my home unsupervised. He’s only with us for 54 days so far, but the accidents are now very few and far between, one last week and none this week… yet…
Although at his regularly scheduled puppy play date on Monday he took a dump in my girlfriends bedroom. I was not happy… But that’s because her house is wide open and her two dogs are untrained themselves. 😒 Somehow she thinks they’re trained because they know the sit command and they only lift their leg to mark territory in their house, they don’t do a full urination or poop inside 😂 And yes, ones an overly spoiled Yorkie that is NOT food motivated at all. The other is a King Charles Spaniel/Chihuahua mix who she thinks isn’t food motivated, but he likes what I bring for training (my guys puppy kibble) enough that he sure does listen for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ But her issue with her Yorkie not being food motivated is precisely because she keeps their bowls always piled high with food 🙄 The one thing I insist on when I bring my boy over is that the food gates taken up while we’re there.
They’re really great social dogs, which is why I will bring my boy there to socialize. And her older guy is a chill dude that she rescued and I want that influence on my boy. He’s put my boy in his place a few times with a takedown and they still get along great, my boy has to learn when enough is enough and respect boundaries. Who better to teach him than an older chill dude? I had to stop their owner from trying to intervene, in the butt sniffing and the takedowns. She doesn’t understand that dogs have their own language, butt sniffing is our hand shaking & get to know ya small talk. And the takedowns she thought was her dog acting out of character being aggressive, but he definitely wasn’t. That wasn’t aggression per-say, but just a firm & matter of fact: stop, I’ve had enough your shit little dude. And my dog backed off and understood the message. Their owner is learning now 😂

Another question, not sure if you have a video about this. My 2 neighbors have dogs. 1 neighbors' dogs run around the yard playing, as the other neighbors' dogs constantly bark at anything. So how do i get my puppy to not bark at the other dogs through the fence, while the other dogs are barking at him?

    • @NateSchoemer

First you can try redirecting and if they doesn't work, then you can correct the barking. Check out these two videos to learn and understand the process:

  • @NativeNYerChicHK

If you get a working dog, then you need to not just exercise it but to work it. Every breed has their needs outside of exercise requirements. So everyone should do their due diligence before they set their hearts on a breed. Or if you do want to rescue a dog, you should look into what the breeds they’re mixed with need because chances are that dog might have multiple needs, one more than the other or a balance of a few might satiate them. But either way, all dogs need the proper amount exercise, their specific needs met and discipline for them to learn self control and confidence in their decisions. People don’t understand how fulfilling your dogs needs and giving them enough exercise creates the docile dog inside the house that they’ve been dreaming of.

And sometimes it just doesn't matter what you or experts recommend, they still pick the wrong breed. I had my own free public service to assist people picking the best breed/breeds for their lifestyle. Even referring to local rescues and shelters of the breeds they should get. Oh no, they picked the exact opposite of what was recommended and then they wonder why they're having issues. Unbelievable!?! But they have the dog now and still want to keep that dog. Training sessions: Even Susan Garrett who trains world class Agility dogs only trains 3-5 minutes max at a time. Sandwiched with fun play sessions. Pattern training door exercises and sit for everything, especially your supper and the door.
