      Hey Scotty, I'm not a fan of the electric parking brake either but on the new Toyotas you can hold down the electric parking brake button for 3 or 4 seconds and it automatically retracts it and you can do the brakes.

    I've got a Mitsubishi L200 double cab, 1999. 100,000 miles. Changed 2 clutches, 1 thermostat 4 sets of tyres. Lots of oil changes. Runs like new. Thousands of them here in Cyprus. Like your show.

    Scotty failed to mention something useful about the startup process. When the car is first started and the check engine and all the other lights flash on, you can use this to verify that all these warning lights do, in fact, work. One VERY USEFUL tip as a car buyer is that if someone fiddled with the check engine light to mask an engine problem, you will notice it fails to light up when the car is started.

    I have a love/hate relationship with the radar cruise control in my Tundra (2019 TRD Sport). I love how it paces a car in front of you when it gradually slows, but if a slower car pulls in front of you (even if you have plenty of time to change lanes to go around) sometimes it will practically stomp on the brakes before you have a chance to change lanes causing you to miss your chance if other cars are coming in the adjacent lane. Also, if you do end up changing lanes and there is no car ahead in the other lane, the truck will floor the throttle to get back up to speed instead of a steady increase. I typically keep the distance set at the full three bars, two bars in very light traffic. (No, I don't use cruise in heavy traffic, only on freeways/highways in light traffic)

    Disconnect the battery or fuse relay to shut off the electric parking break may also work, but I like a simple manual brake...

    Turning off traction control in a Tacoma also turns on the electronic limited-slip differential. It's not a real mechanical LSD, it just uses the rear wheel speed sensors to sense when a tire is slipping and brakes that tire so that more torque goes to the other rear tire.

      @@kingshabazz1310 It's pretty clever. The Crawl Control system in the TRD off-road models is the same thing. It's just brake control software.

      @@jmpattillo Crawl control is a joke though, very clunky in its operation, you will be much smoother using your own right foot to crawl it. And they decided not to install hill descent control because of the crawl control. I've never used the E-LSD on my Taco because I have a TRD off road so have a real locker, if it's rough enough to want a LSD then its rough enough to be in 4Low anyway.

    Traction Control software assumes you are usually on pavement or maybe hard dirt, and the wheels are slipping from hydroplaning, or ice or sand/mud. It reduces engine power, applies the ABS selectively to slow the wheels for a few seconds until you "get past" the hazard and on to good pavement again. This is totally counter-productive to getting out of a rut or deep snow, so turning TCS off, and better yet, any mud/snow mode on, will greatly assist in navigating tricky off-road situations.

    for the record you dont NEED the scan tool for the break job... it just makes it FAR easier and faster...and a lot of cheaper scan tools can do it.

    I hate all this electronic crap. Just more junk to break and cost a fortune to repair. Basic cruise control is about the only extra I want. I"m 70 and remember when thing were simplier. Guess I'll be buying older cars that I can actually work on myself.

    Scotty, regarding the Electronic Parking Brake - For the DIY home mechanic doing the brake job, why can't you simply disconnect the Battery to avoid the issue?

    As a technician with 20yrs experience, first thing I'm doing to a vehicle with an electronic parking brake is figure out a way to install a switch to manually override that system....I'll be damned to not being able to do my own brakes

      Just disconnect it at the caliper or disconnect the battery before doing a brake job

    I have the same generation Tacoma and actually if you press it once it turns the traction control off but leaves the electronic stability control on. If you hold it for three seconds it turns both off. You have to be stationary and hold it for three seconds though.

      you really don't want to turn stability control off on the Taco unless you want to do donuts. Tacos will swap ends very quickly on ice if you're not super careful.

    Good video except for the Nissan comments towards the end. Personally I've had a Nissan prior to my truck and my wife has a 2009 Nissan rogue. It's 15 years old and the only work I've done on it was replace a battery, change brake pads, and a thermostat. Which admittedly was in a horrible place. But I feel like for 15 years that ain't bad. I feel like it's more about how you take care of the car. Any vehicle will be junk if u drive it hard and don't maintain it.

      He's said in other videos the rear wheel drive Nissans are pretty good. Especially Nissan Frontiers.
      FWD CVT transmission Nissans are known to have some problems and known to be not as reliable as other vehicles.

      It all depends on specific vehicles. He always goes off the overall of brands/models that he has dealt with. They can be made in various locations, or have had changes made depending on when they were produced. In the end, it's always up in the air if you end up with a vehicle that has a lot of problems, or one that is solid. If you watch Scotty at all.... he basically dislikes all companies now, if the vehicle is new.

      I will never own another Nissan ever especially ones with I think the bag transmission which comes in rogues my wife had one and the transmission over heated with normal driving and went into limp mode and she almost got killed on the interstate cause the rogue would not accelerate.

    The manual transmission is the best traction control tool. Along with the best fuel economy.

      That hasn't been the case for 20 years. You'll never do better than a modern TCS system and auto has beaten manual for fuel economy since 6 speed autos became commonplace. 8+ speed autos and CVTs are even better still for fuel economy. If you're talking 20 year old TCS systems or no TCS and old 3 and 4 speed autos sure. The only case for manual on a modern vehicles is personal preference.

      ​@@mrvwbug4423idk if this entirely true sometimes with more gears you're pushing harder on the gas and force a high downshift in city but will do great on long trips . While manual you're able to make shift points low due to higher torque than the auto version .also sits on neutral during stops while autos still revving on first gear . It all depends but generally manuals uses neutral most of the time in the city .

    I can put my Mazda CX-5 in Parking Brake maintenance mode in less than a minute,no scan tool required easy peasy!

      The manufacturer could actually make this easy to do without special equipment. They don't because they want you to spend more money paying THEM to do it! Same goes for OBD codes. Why should anyone need a special computer to read the codes? They could just make them display on the on board computer and it wouldn't cost them a penny! Same thing though...they want you to pay for something you could easily do yourself.

      @@jasonhaynes2952 Fords you don't need anything. On the trucks you push the gas pedal to the floor and push the emergency brake button on and hold them, turn the truck on off in 5 seconds and it goes into maintenance mode. do the normal brake job do the same thing but this time pull the emergency brake button and it take it out. 30 seconds max.

      Why you would ever turn it off on a Tacoma is beyond me. If you're stuck in a 2WD Taco you made poor life choices. If you're in a SR5 4x4, you have a few tools with the TCS to help you get unstuck (E-LSD does a fairly good job of torque vectoring on the SR5s). The TRD Off road and Pro have a proper locker and a whole plethora of TCS modes that are designed to work in 4Low and are legitimately good at keeping you from getting stuck, crawl control is a joke though. TCS on the rear also switches off when the locker is engaged. You have to go out of your way to get a TRD Off road or pro Taco stuck.

    I bought a 2017 tacoma trd off road. The fanciest vehicle I've ever owned, sure it has more technology then I'm used to. But it's still something I like because I can still be in control of it and how I drive.

    Electronic parking brake can be put into safe mode by the consumer. Press the foot brake while pulling up on the parking brake switch. To disable safe mode, keep your foot on the brake and push down on the parking brake switch. You will hear a chime when it disables or enables.

    Love you videos and I hate to say you were wrong but when you pushed the lane departure button and the symbol is visible it’s on it’s just telling you it doesn’t work below a certain speed. If the symbol isn’t there it’s not on
    Did your son get a letter from Toyota about a possible fuel pump issue? I have a 21 Tacoma with 57 thousand miles haven’t noticed anything.

    The auto dimming uses the forward-looking camera to detect oncoming traffic. An attentive driver is much better than the auto-dim system; you can see the oncoming headlight beam on roadside trees, powerlines, or structures; and dim. My TRD OR has that system and by the time it reacts on a hilly or curved backroad, I've already given the oncoming driver a dose of high beams; or you drive 500 yards behind someone with your high beam headlights in their mirrors.

    My adaptive cruze control on my 2021 f150 will change speed to limit posted and car lengths till truck brakes or speeds up and i can let steering wheel in curves and it will take it on its own for the most part or hoghway after you ride the lane line or long or X amounts of time's it will ding and make you grab wheel and maintain control for about 2 seconds then it can take over again and honestly very very accurate on all topics above

      He didn’t really like it . He said it was good for what it was if you didn’t have 10-15 grand more fore a Toyota with possible dealership markup . Plus the dude had like a 10 year warranty & got it cheap which Scotty also stated was part of it along with it being made in Japan 🇯🇵 & think of all the problems it could’ve had in over a year since Scotty first made that video to now ? Probably numerous because the video was at the end of 2022 & we’re in the beginning of 2024

    I have auto high beams on my 2021 Ford Ranger. I never use them. On an undulating road, oncoming car lights can go below a hump in the road, then my brights come on right into the windshield of the oncoming car. Several people got really pissed at me the first time I drove at night on a dark country road.

    Great work Scotty. There is another interesting feature of the automatic trans. If you are in a lower gear and want to go to high gear all at once (like from 2nd to 6th) you simply push the shift lever forward and hold until it shifts directly to 6th.

    The electronics in my truck are an am/fm radio and cigarette lighter.
    Neither has ever failed and somehow gets done what needs gettin done
    without radars and computers. 🤠

    You have the lane departure alert backwards. Without the light on no alerts, with the light on it does alert if you cross the line. The warning is to tell you that it isn’t going to work below that speed, similar to how the adaptive cruise control stops at 25/27 mph on some models of Toyotas.

    Holding the cruise button down for a couple seconds activates non-radar cruise control.

      Why you would do that is beyond me though? I've had my 2019 Tacoma for almost 5 years and have never used the non-adaptive cruise. The only time the adaptive has ever acted up is when the radar unit gets covered in ice or the windshield gets so dirty that the camera can't see, I can count the number of times that has happened on one hand in 5 years, living in Colorado so plenty of snow, and a quick clean of the windshield or radar unit fixed it right up.

      @@mrvwbug4423 i have a 2022 Tacoma I drive for work. I like it and really like the cruise control, but I have 1 major issue. If you're behind someone on the highway and they get over to turn, sometimes it thinks I'm still behind them and starts to panic brake. They're all the way over in the turn lane though. Very annoying and dangerous when someone is behind you.

      I have a 22 Taco also . I hate the dumb speed control . It breaks when people are turning ahead of you and makes passing in some conditions on the interstate impossible . I never use it ! @@joeg5414

    Personally I prefer the electronic brake from a service perspective but for a safety and fun perspective I prefer mechanical. My cars EPB has a setting in the infotainment system to deactivate the EPB system to do the brakes at home… so that is nice

    Hey Scotty, my 2021 Toyota Camry XSE Hybrid doesn't require you to push the lever forward. All I have to do is turn on my automatic high bean button. My 2019 Avalon XLE, you had to push the lever forward to get the automatic high beams to work.

      It's the same on the Tacoma, that switch is to enable/disable automatic high beam when you put the lights into high beam. The Tacoma's auto high beam is flaky on 4 lane highways, so I find I usually only use the auto high beam on 2 lane roads.

    I have a 2010 Tundra with the 5.7 flex fuel engine which I plan to keep till I'm dead, because the new Tundra has a twin-turbo V6, and the Ford EcoBoost twin-turbo only lasts about 100,000 miles when used for a lot of towing, I doubt Toyota has solved that problem, the extra heat from the turbos running all the time when towing will take its toll on the engine...no pun intended. Time will tell, but I'm not going to be the test dummy.

      Yep. 55 caddy, auto magic eye, a big blue anodized chrome teardrop shaped light sensor on the dash, AND dual zone AC!

    I remember being stuck behind a big BMW 7 (rear wheel drive obviously) stuck for 10 minutes on 3" of snow on ice on a long incline, and traffic building up behind us - I got out, went up to him and politely advised the old dude to try to find his Traction button and switch it off - he looked at me as if I was mad, he switched it off, then looked stunned as he easily and slowly drove off.

      Mine does too but unfortunately doesn't work and I have been waiting several years to get it fixed. Apparently octopi are on extreme back order. It's very unfortunate as there have been a few tailgaters that really deserve an octopus to the windshield!

    If you want to destroy all your cordless chargers go ahead and use that rear 120v modified sine wave receptacle. You still need to buy a full sine wave invertor. 400W is about $500. If all you want is something useful for 2-3 normal power drills the Tacoma receptacle will work. Will even make a microwave work but it will buzz.

    You dont always need expensive equipment to do rear brakes that have an electronic handbrake. On VAG cars you can remove the motors and wind back manually

    You don't need a scan tool to do the brakes on a vehicle with electronic e-brakes. You can just disconnect the battery or disconnect the wires connected to the calipers.

      Yes but certain ones won’t release them regardless. My brother had the high-end Mercedes SUV model, and tried all that, but couldn’t get em’ to release. He had to look it up online & talk to the dealer about to get them to open up from the Infotainment screen menu…

    Auto-highbeam is pretty old tech. I had it on my 85 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham with the Autronic Eye (created in 1952 by Caddy). Very analog tech compared to today's sensors it uses.

    Scottie stop bagging on Mitsubishi. Ive had an outlander sport for quite awhile almost 100k miles AWD the thing is reliable , parts are affordable and it off roads pretty good.... plus i used to work on these car 15 20 years ago all& all in the car market i think their pretty good... i mean their not Toyota but they don't cost as much ether

    When you start the car and all the lights come on, that's not really because it's doing system checks. It could do system checks just as well without any lights coming on. The reason all the lights come on is so that you can visually verify that the lights themselves work. Otherwise, you could be overheating and not realize it because the high temp light is out (or oil pressure, etc.).

    I bought a 2016 Ford F-150 in 2016. Haven't had any major problems with it except brakes and rotors. And always tires losing air. Have to put air back in then every couple of weeks. I don't drive it a whole lot. It sets a lot. Just aggravating I have to put air in every couple of weeks. What would suggest to stop this from happening. I've put sensors in three of the tires already. There 75 a pop. Plus 20 dollars to have the tires broke down every time

    Scotty the outlet in the bed of the truck only works in Park or neutral. Not very good idea if you cannot use it while driving to keep refrigerators running or other power hungry items. They should have added a 12v plug along with it. My 22 Tacoma plug really is useless. And if used for power tools check your manual and for sure your tools for power draw!

    Scotty I just am blown away with how knowledgable you are about all cars !!! I am a women who had an X-husband who owns his own shop ( still does ) and also had a boyfriend for 10 years that built drag bikes and trucks and I always sat and watched them all the time and I actually learned ALOT about cars ....older ones , not the newest cars. When I walk in anywhere to ask anything , they can't screw me , once I open my mouth , they know I am knowledgable about cars ......if I go to the same place , they run when they see me coming 😂 Can't get over on this girl !!!!! I watch you all the time , I have gotten a few great tips from you !!! I own a 16 year old Toyota Scion XD with only 77,000 miles on it , still looks brand new !!! Runs like a top !!! Thanks for all your advice , it sure comes in handy for me as a women !!!😊

    I drive lots of narrow, slow and windy mountain roads with ample pot holes and icy spots and departing the lane regularly just happens. In my case not being able to turn the lane departure warning off would become real obnoxious.

    Scotty, you’re wrong about the Kane departure assist. When it is on it gives you the warning saying that the Kane departure assist is unavailable at the lower speeds because it works at higher speeds. The green light means it’s on.

    You not showing everything the traction control you need to push and old to disable the advance traction. The cruise control there is two type the radar and normal cruise control. You also didn't show the wireless charger

    If you hold down the button on the cruise control lever, it'll turn on normal cruise control without the radar.

    Two things about newer vehicles that frustrate me. 1. Why do engineers put components they know are going to fail behind 10 parts we have to remove before we can access them? And 2.     The owner's manual for these new cars must be two feet thick with all the switches, dials, buttons and levers they have. Most people won't read the manuals, and those who do probably get get totally confused. I know I do, lol.

    The lane departure warning is actually inverse in operation from how you described it, If the indicator is on, the feature is on.
    Saying its unavailable below 32 mph just means that it won't warn you of lane departure below that speed even though the feature is enabled.

    Promise you the jerky lane departure “assist” is absolutely horrible and almost caused me a few accidents when traveling through highway construction zones. The fact that it’s not optional at higher speeds is stupid.

    Took me a week with a magnifying glass to read the small-font handbook with very tiny icons (coves all 7 models so some do not apply) - just to forget the 20 dash lights may switch from green to yellow or red and what they mean - or lane control does not work under 35mph, and cruise works over 25mph etc (probably got them wrong lol) - handy for split second decisions lol

    Brands I personally would avoid and stay away from: Nissan, Dodge/Ram, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover.
    Honda and Toyota have proven themselves time and time again for higher resale value, dependability, reliability, cheaper to maintain and parts are cheap. Plus they last a very long time.
    Nissan CVT transmission are notorious for failures and problems.

    Shutting of lane departure control “Unavailable at high speeds” ? Having this “whistle & bell” is questionable from the get go. What “study” determined that forcing you to remain in any lane could be a problem. What happens when the vehicle in front of you impacts a vehicle that enters the lane in front of them? Will you be able to respond quickly enough to steer and brake to avoid?

    Mitsubishi used ti be in bed with Chrysler in from 1984-2012 as DSM (Diamond Star Moters) in Bloomington/Normal Illinois. My uncle worked there for 32 years before retiring and their bankruptcy. Rivain electric trucks are made in the old DSM plant off of I-74 Exit 132 Diamond Star Parkway formally now its called Rivain Moter Way I think.

    Can’t tell you how many people get stuck pulling into driveways and parking lots in the snow that the plow pushed while clearing the road. 1st off going to the snow bank at a crawl speed is not going to get you thru it. And the people in the cars wonder why they are stuck but then they’ll sit there REVING the engine yet don’t realise THE WHEELS ARE NOT spinning! Yea the motors reving so sounds like it should be doing something but it’s not.
    Or they’re on a hill and get stuck midway and they’ll floor the gas thinking the tires will grip and they’ll sit there for 10-20 mins in one spot or the front of the cars going right to left in the same spot and won’t get up the hill cuz the wheels are not moving continuously
    And when the wheels do it’s only for a quick couple seconds at a time..
    That’s cuz the traction control is ON!
    If you want to get out turn it OFF then your wheels will spin full power constantly
    But also keep in mind
    A light acceleration from a stop will move you better and grip better so feather the gas pedal and you’ll get up the hill.
    If possible get some speed before the hill and don’t floor it 😊

    Those aren't all that "modern". My 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland has all these things...plus when reversing, not only does the camera show what's behind you, but the side view mirrors tilt down so you can see what's beside you.

    The Tacoma turns off rear traction control in 4Low when the locker is engaged but will keep it on up front and its multi terrain modes actually do useful stuff, crawl control is a joke though. If you're rocking your 2WD Tacoma because you got stuck, you might want to rethink some life choices. ECT is a crude tow/haul mode, but lacks the aggressive downshifting and torque converter lock that the tow/haul in a full size truck has. Also to engage 4Low on the Tacoma, you need to stop and put the transmission into neutral like most modern trucks. Lane departure doesn't work below 32mph, if you turn it off its off period. the button above the lane departure button sets the follow range on the adaptive cruise. The only thing I usually consistently keep off on my 2019 Tacoma is the automatic high beams, they're flaky on 4 lane highways, they only work decently on 2 lane roads.

    Here's the problem. One, owners manuals typically come with used and new vehicles, do people read them? No, most do not. The majority of this information is covered if you read the owners manual.
    Two, the salesmen at the dealership aka stealership. Do they explain or demonstrate the vehicle to the customer and what things do? Most nowadays do not. Why? Time is money, more sales more money aka commission in the their pockets.
    You may get the occasional person who'll actually take the time to explain what each individual button does but understand this, most don't and they care more about getting you in and hope to make a sale, which makes them profit aka commission and move onto the next person. The more time they waste the less sales they make. Sorry, not sorry.

    Our '62 Coupe de Ville had auto-dimming headlights via a photocell pod on the dash. Sensitivity was adjusted by a knob on the rear of the pod. To my recollection, my folks tried to find the sweet spot between blinding people and driving in the dark. Ultimately unsuccessful in finding this balance, they wound up just turning the system off and using the dimmer button on the floor.

      @@hondafan20111 yes it is, guidematic was the first iteration of it. guidematic just happened to be an unreliable POS that would fail and leave you stuck in high beam permanently. I had a 70s Caddy with this system, and Twilight Sentinel was the other part that was normal automatic headlights.

    hummm so this is what the stuff is supposed to do. Rear wheel drive traction control is useless. we used to call it posi traction. And as with the cool traction control step on the gas at a critical time your rear end will come around to kiss you on the left or right cheek. And you don't even have to be driving accelerating fast. It's also critical tires play a big part of the equation

    Not correct on the e parking brakes My F150 has a pretty simple procedure to put the brakes into service mode and it doesn't require a scanner. I can't remember what it is but there is a ton of You tube tutorials

    Don't know why car makers don't group the dash lights together logically, instead of 20 all over the place, a real confusing mess. All headlamps, side lights, fog, indicators in one group, and optional safety systems like traction, lane control together, and warnings of low fuel, battery, tyre pressure, oil, seat belt together, and Emergency like brake failure, stop-engine/driving together.
