We need that Alcantara option! I am happy that the gap in differences between the US-spec and Euro-spec Mk8 Golf R is much smaller, but for once Megan let us loyal VW enthusiasts feel like everyone at VWofA is actually is advocating and listening to us loyal VW fans…please add the Alcantara option (In black, not that gray color too)!

This all great news because the pricing was way out of my budget going by the Euro pricing. Think this car will be a winner both here in ca as much as the US. Thanks for shedding some light on our as per usual late rollout. Do it Charles sell the mk7 if you have to lol.
Would like to see USA get the gray alcantara door inserts at least, interior needs some color contrast. Otherwise I’m good with the leather seats
She is great, VW has a great representative for NA and she is a manual transmission fan! Seats are great IMO. Cloth is the best.

True Story!
Well the release version of the NA variant will be a huge tell. I feel like Meg went out on a limb to assure us that we won’t be getting a watered down variant or an outrageous sticker price. If both of these things hold true that will show VW’s appreciation for her by backing her up after the sales pitch. She got our attention now they need to reel us in with a good product and price for our climate.
She always comes across as genuine and really loving the product that she is in change of delivering. A lot of of others in her position at other companies come across more as accountants than car lovers.
Her comment of "Save the Manuals" made me smile.
She came to personally congratulate me on my purchase of my '19 R. A very special experience unlike I've had with any other car in my life. Fantastic! And a genuine VW nut- you can take that one to the bank.
If we got the cloth seats in North America that’s what I’d want. Cloth seats, sunroof and the rear diff could get me out of my 7.5 R.

I hate all leather seats (usually). The alcantara/leather (middle alcantara like on Audi models) is better than all leather but I'd like to see what these cloth/alcantara feel like!
The standard loaded R is so nice, but I wish they made a completely stripped down one to bring the price down and allow more to purchase it. They really should offer one below $40,000.

Megan- Yes yes yes to cloth seats! They look so much cooler than leather and I much prefer them for both hot and cold days. At least give them as an option.
Option for memory & cooled seats, heated steering wheel, sunroof is for sure something MK7 was missing big time. After 11k miles of 7.5 ownership, I still wish I had those options.

Cloth is the best most comfortable fabric, v-tex vinyl is a close second, with leather not even making it to the finish line. I like those seats too.
Leather looks luxurious but I like the details in the cloth. At least we get a sun roof!
Also, as the other comments say, it's really nice to have a true enthusiast be the forward representation of the company like Megan is. She feels far more honest and personable than any press event or conference setting, she feels like she's open to real feedback and takes pride in the cars she's promoting. Super awesome.

The cloth seats make the car, so much better than plain ole leather, look back at all of the old cool VWs its all about the cloth seats. Even the mk4 R32.
While I do agree that the cloth seats are more traditional and probably hold up longer, my spoiled ass wanted something with leather seats and a manual transmission. VW offered it with the 2021 GTI SE, and I couldn't resist with the 13% employee discount I had.

@@derek723 I’ve literally never put fabric protector on any of my VW’s.. is this an actual thing? I’m 3 yrs in on my mk7.5 GTI and my cloth seats still look like new.. all I do is vacuum them fairly regularly.

Definitely bring the cloth seats! They wear better which well increase resale value. And they look so much cooler than the leather ones. I was sort of disappointed when I heard that we were only getting leather. Hopefully you can change that.
Agree, they appear to be stitched creatively as well. Love the look. Not sure I’d want a two tone seat though. Maybe one color. Black always works.

Absolutely LOVE the cloth seats! Never understood why that wasn’t at least a no cost delete option for the Golf R for those of us that don’t like leather. It’s also more environmentally friendly. I also think they look nicer, just like the Clarke plaid in the GTI. Cloth seats and some physical buttons and I’m a happy camper!

Current mk7.5 R owner here. I love those cloth seats and design. Looking forward to more and may be tempted to upgrade to this new one.
In response to Megan's question, these cloth alcantara seats are 100% better than leather seats. I hope they end up switching the US spec to having these cloth seats. Just look at the mk4 R32 as a reference point, most people prefer cloth seats over leather seats.

I know alcantara is tough to maintain, but man do those seats look sharp. If they don't have it as an option, then a cloth seat with that color scheme would definitely be welcome.

Megan, please tell VW that the infotainment/climate controls that are completely touch are actual deal breakers and many people can't sacrifice ability to easily adjust these functions while driving no matter how great the car drives. Awesome for VW to bring a 6MT only to the NA market but please bring back physical buttons!!!!!

Doesn’t matter how much torque a car has if it can’t apply it. One of my first thoughts when hearing the suspected torque spec and HP was how they managed wheel hop and traction. Are the aluminum subframe components she mentioned just bushings?
Ive got a mk7 R but in my heart..mk6 is the best looking r ever.

I greatly prefer cloth seats. Thats coming from a MK6 R owner. I liked the cloth seats in my MK5 GTI more. Would love to see a durable cloth as an option!
My mk6 gli pleather seats get so hot in the NC summers, it can be uncomfortable when wearing shorts (which are basically a necessity) that don't cover all the way to the knees. Cloth seats in a manual Golf R would be enough to get me to seriously consider an upgrade.
@@Beef4Dinner22 That and cold winters are the biggest reasonable why I prefer cloth. Not sure if your GLI has similar quality leather but I must acknowledge that the leather in my R is pretty good quality.

Yes, PLEASE offer the cloth and alcantara seats in the US. They look fantastic and many prefer cloth to leather, especially for a dual purpose family and performance car.

Beautiful seats!!! One of the things I missed about the mk7/7.5 R is the lack of the GTI seat options. The Alcántara gives the best of both worlds, retro look in the middle, classy sporty look around the retro.

Same, I'm surprised there aren't more comments about that, I am literally going to buy one because of this, I've been sitting on my 2012 camry for a long time for a affordable sporty car with ventilated seats.

I took delivery of my MK7.5 in May 2018 after waiting 2 months for it to arrive. I still drive with a giant smile on my face every day! When I saw pics of the MK8, I was so turned off by the front of it, but now the more I hear/see about the other changes, I just may not be able to resist getting it!! The front has grown on me...kind of. LOL As far as the seats, I was never a leather fan until my 7.5, but now I love them. I think having an option for cloth or leather would be the way to go though. And I'm soooo happy they are making manual an option on the US spec!!!! In my eyes, that's the only way to drive! #SaveTheManuals As a side note, it's awesome to see another female so into this car as much as I am!! Megan rocks! Thanks for putting this together, Charles. I think right before the US release, VW should give you the car for the day and let you make another video to help me decide if I'm gonna go put a deposit down on one again. =)

Learning this will also come in manual for NA was a game changer for me. I LOVE the plaid design on the alcantara german spec seats but do like the way the leather seats are supposed to look. It would be great to have the option of leather, leather w/cloth in the center (especially the plaid design) or the alcantara seats for the NA market. Also I know I'm one of *many* who also want the spektrum colors to return for the MK8 - it will be a big disappointment if we only have 3 colors to choose from. Also... really hoping you can opt out of a sunroof option too. Loved the video - thank you SO much for doing this & sharing it, greatly appreciate everyone involved!

My current lease is up next year and this car is one that I am really excited to try. Megan almost have me convinced and I thank her for her hard work. I just have to try it on to be sure.

@@patricenan No pricing or configuration options yet, just a deposit, with my preferences. He said they had 14 pre-orders so far and that I was the 5th wanting blue. They are also designating based on transmission preference, DSG for me please. I also asked for the sunroof and he's put that on my pre-order info as well, but he said they do not yet have confirmation from VW Canada that the sunroof will actually be available here.

Thanks for the video. Meagan is a great VW representative. Tell her that Alcantara seats are nice (just don't put that stuff on the steering wheel). I think that you should of course order a new model. My suggestion would be to pick a different color than any other model that you previously had. On the Canadian website it mentions "Two new modes - Special (Nürburgring) and Drift - bring a new level of customization to the experience. Larger brakes, now with cross-drilled front rotors, ensure ample stopping power." I'm excited about that and happy that VW will still offer two choices of transmissions :D
I lean towards wanting the Alcantara/cloth over leather; however, I know from experience that Alcantara is harder to take care of and is more delicate than leather. Also, I would prefer no sunroof. Unpopular preference I am sure.
Any plans for a head-to-head technical breakdown of the BorgWarner/Haldex vs. Magna rear differential?
I have Alcantara in one of my cars, I hate it with a passion. Worst material for a surface where it's constantly in contact with the user.
Im sold on this Golf R. A manual transmission, cloth seats, fair pricing. Im saving my pennies to buy one when it comes out.
These things will be worth a small fortune in a few decades anyways when vw only sells electric vehicles. I plan on keeping mine for life

I’d sell my 7.5 tomorrow if I could get the 5 cylinder. Sadly, just like getting a 2 door golf R I don’t see VW ever offing it in the USA.
Honestly think that should be exclusive to Audi.
I think the 2.5 tsi vr6 (from the Chinese market) should be the Top of the line Golf.
I heard the Arteon R was tested with a 3.0 vr6 tsi and there was just too much weight over the front axle and it kinda cancelled out the torque vectoring rear diff 😔, although the 2.5 vr6 would be lighter so that would help.

I dunno I mean I get where you’re coming from but it would be so awesome if it existed even limited to like 1500 examples or soemthing. It woold be VW’s equivalent to the 1M.
@@rokan81 😂 doesn’t VW make all the motors in the end? Both would be nice, but I’ve seen them swapped in mk7’s before so I guess it just comes down to what you’re willing to spend.
When I go car shopping next year the MK8 R will be at the tip top of my shopping list, and I would love to see a cloth option. After 9 years of use, the Clark plaid seats in my MK6 GTI still look and feel great, and nearly always draw compliments when someone new sees them.

Haptic controls?! I live in Western NY. So during the winter I have three options
1) Waste fuel, while waiting for the interior to harm up.
2) Take my gloves off and freeze my fingers (Which are sensitive due to a mild case of frostbite during college)
3) Not be able to use the steering wheel controls until I get 5 miles down the road.
For sure prefer the cloth/alcantara over the leather seats. Also hope we get amber turn signals

I'm stoked that it will have Nappa leather, sunroof, 2 pot brakes, and the DSG. VW doesn't make a BMW or Honda stick. But it's great they will offer the manual here. Really hoping for the Akrapovic exhaust or at least the ability to have dealer installation. This car stays above 300hp on the shifts, 50 more than prior gen on a stock basis. Pretty sweet. Can't wait to see what the tuners can do once they crack the ecu.

Kudos to Megan for talking about all the details while the car is being tossed around corners. Manual is awesome, cloth seats would be nice. The lack of buttons is a minus, but overall, happy to see that VW made another Golf R with a manual transmission.

This was excellent to have an actual representative from VW on-hand, rather than just re-iterating a spec sheet. Regarding the seat question: I’m happy with the leather BUT I wish the leather seats offered some kind of color contrast to the interior. At least with the cloth seats you get gray (dislike the blue center center however), and even the gray alcantara in the door cards would be nice to have in the USA version.
Any comments on 8R ride comfort? Is comfort setting more comfortable than an mk7? (... I’m assuming mk7 DCC was same as mk7.5?). I had a 7R and thought it was just barely too harsh for the roads I commute on.
