Beautiful Houses. Love the book. I want to buy it. However, we must not forget most of the houses were built on the back of the poor. Cuba needed a revolution. Castro killed the dream of the revolution in his first year in power. It is sad, their own people kept him in power. Cuba educated their people which is a good thing. However, their belies were empty.
As a child I use to spend 6 months in Havana in the Miramar neighborhood (winter) n 6 months (summer) in my parents beautiful sugar plantation in CAMAGUEY province....to say it was a beautiful happy life is an understatement...as a child I led a life in which the days were filled, while in the plantation w riding horses, swimming in the ocean...plantation had own wild private beach,or playing w my brother in our own 30 acres set aside by my parents as our own private playground complete w running Brook, caves full of bats, unspoiled land w lots of wonders that as children we would dream up...there are no poisonous animals in Cuba so no worry there but now as I remember I can't believe we had such freedoms to roam in our horses exploring...later on I found out cowboys were always on the lookout for our safety yet I never saw them...the bluest skies n the perfect temperature was always the rule...when the sugarcane season would end n hundreds of acres of empty cut sugarcane was all that was left we coulnt wait to watch the spectacle to come....many guests n friends n family would come that day to watch as night arrived to see in the distance from the verandas of the house on a hill overlooking a flat valley n in the distance the shoreline n ocean bathed by the moon in all of nature's glory...then as if in cue hundreds of men on either side of these empty fields would set the whole land on fire...I cannot but say it would start slow n in 20 minutes hundreds n hundreds of acres of land were engulfed by waves of giant fires each racing toward each other to meet in the middle n then burn each other out...it was a spectacle beyond words...lighting up the night as day as if the whole world was on fire...hundreds of feet tall flames swirling n unison embracing each other in their short life n the guests in awe mesmerized by the spectacle watching something that as city folks they never see...afterwards we had to go to bed but the grownups stayed up all night eating n drinking as the party spilled into the lawn in which pink flamingos my father brought as part of the show made noises protesting the raucus of laughter n voices exclaiming wonder at the impressive show...fresh roasted pig n fresh fruit n fresh milk or anything available right off the trees in large beautiful set tables w white linen that never ran out of food was the norm...the plantation had still not been connected to the power grid so there was a power plant...painted green I remember...in its own house that would start automatically whenever a light switch was turned on....I estimated now to have been the size of a car or larger...quiet n in the darkness of the night all around us the house was lit like a Christmas tree n the area around it...it was like a bright island in a sea of darkness...all this I took for granted n thought nothing of it being incredible but it was...after this occasion the rest of the summer became quiet n our world of wonders was all ours again...people still visited but nothing like what I described...there were bullfights n rodeos n once I remember my father n my brother n I went to a bullfight n after the inevitable sad end of the bull the matador cut off the ears of the poor dead beasts n offered them to me....I learned it was a great honor but I was sick to my stomach...those bloody black hairy ears cut out of its head are fresh in my mind decades after...by the way I didn't take them n my father of course did n politely excused my disgust....but it was disgusting. All too soon summer season was over n we all went to a nearby town (our family, tons of luggage n whatever we take back as souvenirs) in our two Willis jeeps...one red n one green...that would takes us to the train station n our cabins for the ride back to Havana n a more orderly, disciplined lifestyle which nonetheless was incredible w new things to do n learn obligatory in our position....dance lessons, going to swim club,tennis....I only liked the swimming n school...after school came tutors,n so on n on...by the way when I say school it wasn't like any school in the sense of the word...it was private,we wore uniforms n besides learning all u learn in a school there were a million other things I won't describe to u now.. After all that happened n the destruction of our world I can honestly say that whenever I'm down those memories make me realize that for a short time I lived the life few can imagine and as tears roll down my eyes I thank God he let me be borned into a world so rich n beautiful no matter what happens I have but to close my eyes n feel the joy n happiness as few have experienced.. As for Miramar n it's elegance, beauty n refinement ....that's another incredible tale to tell...I hope I live to see Cuba free n prosperous one day...n then all the ghosts of that long dead world can be at peace.....n the suffering of the living ended n free to bring back the laughter n happiness missing since long ago.
You mean when america will own and control everything and then make sure that racism and segregation is normal again and have the Cuba's work all the second class jobs. Hellllll no. Btw must of been nice to be a part of the white pivilege in Cuba. Btw you'll never see Cuba as a capitalist society. You or your great great grandchildren. Viva Cuba libre.
The cultures should never be broken by the militaries or law enforcement who work in the strategic plan to take what you have....which was a rich culture with incredible complexities and now almost ready to rise again!
One more thing I just remembered...in the final years in Miramar I remember riding my bycicle thru streets filled w shuttered n abandoned mansions of every description w their once immaculate gardens overgrowned filled w weeds b dead shrubbery n their swimming pools empty of water except whatever rain water had accumulated in them along w weeds n all kinds of yeah...u could go in these once grand mansions...their chandeliers dirty or broken along w Windows n once I remembered I went into the library n all over the dirty marble door there were hundreds of books as well as torn pages all over the floor...it must have belonged to a lawyer or judge for they were all law books....it was as if civilization had collapsed n we were in a dark age....the only good thing I could think of was that whoever once lived in this house would not have seen the destruction of their former grand home..that memory affected me long after I left the country because I imagined that a similar fate awaited my still beautiful home at the time...I never went back there....there were also portraits n scattered photos of the former owners broken n scattered among the debris....so very sad n traumatic for a child to see.
I’m a Santiaguero as well 😊 … is this book on Amazon ? you should go to Santiago as well that’s another city with unique houses such as Diego Velazquez one. Thanks for the info.
It's ironic how they show old rich White Cuban neighborhoods while playing a tune from El Barrio Jesus Maria. Most of the mansions are abandoned and falling apart. Cuba crumbles, it's citizens starve while the few have anything they wish. Don't let this happen to your country.
Interesting that he doesn't show the former mansions and hotels that were "given" to the poorest people in the country after the revolution. They didn't have the money, of course, to keep up the maintenance of the properties. 50+ years post-revolution, the properties are not habitable by most countrys' standards, yet hundreds of families dwell in them. They don't have adequate access to clean drinking water, nor do they have plumbing systems to safely dispose of waste. How is this "sophistication?" Reality is far removed from the sunshine and roses picture painted here!
Beautiful houses, but those are the one that turist can see, why didn't you show how bad it's now, very desaponted that been Cuban don't show the real Cuba now...sad
Havana is still beautiful in a different way, I think it’s the people, they were so welcoming when I recently visited.
Thanks so much for the memories of the Greatness of Cuba.

Blame that on US sanctions not Castro

Great book
Todo muy bonito, pero los hermanitos Castro (Fidel y Raúl) han destruido La Habana.
Han destruido no sólo La Habana, Cuba entera.

Is very sad that they don't talk about the gloriosos Dias in Havana, Cuba any more,....why????

😥😥😥
Rich White Cubans remember the Old Cuba differently from literally everyone else.
