At first I thought that farm quest was broken for you, then the dogs showed up. It's common for the quest to be bugged.

What was that rifle that you missed on the floor, any good?

It was the Meusser Hunting rifle, the one I already have except worse quality. Picked it up later, ended in recycling :-)
