  • Best illustration books for beginners: Do you want to know how you can become an illustrator without getting a degree, without going to art school? Grab your favorite cuppa, your pen and pencil and get comfortable, because I have some great gems to share with you to get you started in your first steps!
    In this video, I share some of my favorite books and also some of my favorite online classes to start your "independent" learning, if you can't go to art school to get a degree. I only share resources I have tried and found impactful in my own path of improving my illustration skills and knowledge about the children's book publishing industry.
    Sit back and relax! I hope you find a good tip in this video that helps you learn! Please do comment if you do! Great listen also to have playing while you are sketching and working on your art... That is how I "watch" (listen to) TH-cam while I make progress on my illustration skills!

    I am an illustrator who shares her journey here on TH-cam, IG and on my website. I have been on this path since March of 2019, and I learn more every day. I want to share that with you! I LOVE being creative, and learning. I believe in the growth mindset and that though natural talent can make a difference, so can persistence, practice, and enthusiasm.
    My videos are focused on sharing my art work, focused on picture books and nursery room wall art, and what I have learned about: illustration time lapses, art tutorials and how-to videos, building an illustration portfolio, portfolio reviews, the children's book illustration process, my experience with attending conferences such as SCBWI, the Bologna Children's Book Fair, and reviews of taking art/illustration classes such as with Make Art That Sells, the Cambridge School of Art, and more. I love to grow, and I love sharing what I learn along the journey openly!

    It's beautiful to listen to you because the way you share all the very good recommendations is full with your joy and passion for Illustration. I know that myself very well to have thousands of ideas and then getting distracted by them. So. Your Book "Finish" is on the way to my home. Thank you 🙏💐

      Thank you so much for leaving such a kind comment, Mickey! I am so happy my joy carries through to the other end of the screen :). Having a million and one exciting ideas, that's a problem so many of us creatives have, isn't it? I hope you find the book "Finish" as helpful as I did! In preparing for setting my 2021 goals, I should definitely read it again, to figure out what my priorities are, and what I need to say "No" to, to be able to accomplish/finish them... :) It's an evergreen for me I think, I have gotten so much better much my inspiration and aspiration is always bigger than the hours in a day :D.

    I don't have any of these books yet! Although I do have most of Oliver Jeffers books, I didn't know he had a behind the scenes book! I was also going to recommend SVSLearn, they have great videos and the community on there is really good too. And their podcast 3 point perspective is a good listen!

    • @HarmonyHardin
      @HarmonyHardin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love their 3 point perspective podcast! In March of 2019, their podcast on a topic that was titled something like "is it too late to get into illustrating" is what kicked off my whole journey :). I hope some of these Children's Book Illustration resources help you in 2021, they really helped me learn a lot while I was pursuing that avenue. Still recommend them greatly though I have changed my personal focus since and for 2021. I will be creating a part 2 video as well, but it's taking me longer to work through some books and I only want to recommend what I have used and liked.

      @@HarmonyHardin I have to say, I read quite a lot of videos for Illustrations beginners but yours moved me so much. I like your voice :) and the way your present the books. Your kindness moved me a lot!! I'm grateful that I came across your channel. I followed you also ok IG and your pictures are beautiful! For me, I am a real beginner. I like to paint with water color and oil pastel also but I don't really have something particular I focus on, and thats why I am still exploring. Children's book illustration is another area Im fascinated but I think I must be persistent and draw more to see if I really enjoy or not.
      The most important is we enjoy from Art, isn't it?
      Yes!!! We are having Spring here and everywhere is beautiful blossom:) the best season to paint :)
      I hope to see more creation from you and I trust you would be successful from your great passion. I just feel it :)

    This was really motivating.😊 But what made you choose children book illustrations?

    • @HarmonyHardin
      @HarmonyHardin  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry it took so long to reply! Have been taking a bit of a hiatus from TH-cam, but will be back early next year with lots of new artist interviews :). Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! For this particular question, when you asked it a year back, I did not know how to answer. I have since moved away from focusing on picture book illustration, and have started my own greeting card line. However, I now recall how I selected picture book illustration as a field of interest back then. It was I think when I found a podcast about it, and suddenly realized that this was a career people did for a living! It had never occurred to me before. I then spent tons of time in book stores and libraries and realized how gorgeous the art was and the immense respect I had for the craft, and so the interest bloomed.

    I hope that you are still on. I am a total beginner and I draw and making a little picture book of my grandson and great neice and nephew. I was doing some research with amazon and kdp is it true they would take my rights of my book I designed? Im kind of upset with that. I put everything in this with damaged hand. Could you please let me know what to do or direct me to some understanding ideas to do instead with not to expensive. Ya I know it will be. Thank you

    • @HarmonyHardin
      @HarmonyHardin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi dear Chantal, it sounds like a wonderful and meaningful, very personal project ❤️. I don’t have any experience with Amazon KDP but will try to find out. What is your goal for your book? To print a single copy for your niece and nephew? To self-publish it online for sale, with production on demand? To submit to publishers?

    • @chantalmassin1756
      @chantalmassin1756 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HarmonyHardin id really love to sell them but have copies for my cherubs. I dont want to take my hard work for them to make a profit like I heard amazon does. So i would like to get help to get to the point of selling them. But I also heard it is rediculasly expensive to do so. So I thought Id ask you cause you have some ideas on how to. And you are very sweet to say so hugs

      Hi dear @asmroze, could you elaborate a bit on why you are feeling blocked? It is that you do not know where to start? Or imposter syndrome? Or feeling like you are not making enough progress? If you tell me a bit more about how you are feeling, maybe I can recommend some podcasts, books, classes or other concrete suggestion. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment
