Always make sure to check with your professional printer and/or client before you begin the process, to ensure you know what is needed in terms of file format, DPI, color model, etc. The advice in this video is what I have learned works well for my art for purposes of sharing it online in my portfolio, on Instagram, and printing of postcards. There are many factors that could influence and make other settings better for your art work, but here are some ideas to get you thinking about what settings to consider!
You can save time by selecting the layer using the free form tool and sliding the pen along the screen to adjust the selection threshold. Then invert selection and delete the background. You’ll be left with very little to clean up so it will take a lot less time.
Seems like creating the option to place just the bee on any background of choice alone would be worth the trouble. Bonus points for being able to have a clean, dust and crease free white background. Awesome job on your presentation and execution. I feel like already know hundreds more things after watching this!
WOW! What a wonderful, kind-hearted comment! Thank you so much for sharing your perspective. You put a huge smile on my face! I am so so happy to hear it was that helpful for you :). YAY! Happy creating :)
Loved the video tutorial. Art being a new retirement hobby, you have provided me with great insight from your many experiences. Best of luck with your creations and thank you ever so much!
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I am really happy to hear you enjoyed the video. Wishing you loads of fun with your new hobby / interest! :)
After watching several "Calvin at Drifter Studios" procreate videos I started to use his method of putting the selection tool on automatic, dragging either your finger or pencil across the screen and the selection turns blue. Try to select as much background as possible, then go to your layer and scroll down to the "clear" option. You can either turn off the background layer or change the color to see that it was removed. Also, the easier way to "undo" is to tap 2 fingers on the screen. Hope this helps.
Hi dear Mona! I don't have it here right now to confirm, but I believe I have the Apple 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro (Wi‑Fi, 256GB). However, I would suggest checking out videos by other artists specifically on this topic, or checking in with some artists who are doing the majority of their art (it seems) with a iPad, such as @HeatherCashArt. Hope that helps!

Hi Iveth! I am sorry, I do not have experience using these types of files for laser cutting. I do not know the right answer to your question. Thanks for watching and asking, though! I hope you find the right technique for your approach soon.
Hi, thanks for the video! If I need to correct some colors or brightness/saturation on a scanned piece of art, like watercolor or gouache for instance, what’s the best way in Procreate? Can you recommend which tools and methods to use that will be appropriate if the art was going to be printed? I scanned a gouache piece and some parts of the scan seem ok while others need to definitely be fixed (color is off). But I don’t want the touched up parts to look weird and artificial next to the original parts that don’t need retouching, if that makes sense. Is there a natural looking way to retouch a watercolor on Procreate?
Hi, thank you for your tutorial. I have just a quick question, if you would like to sell the bee as a sticker, and send it for printing, do you have to send the artwork in vectors or is it ok if you send it in high quality png/jpeg/psd (pixels)?
Hi there! You will have to check with your printer company what the accept. Format, DPI etc. differs between each company, what is printed onto, etc. I always use pixels, because the method I showed in this video does not create vectors. Programs like Adobe Illustrator can do that, but it is hard to capture watercolor art in vectors. Printing in pixels has its pros for watercolor, but some companies will not accept or guarantee a good result with pixels. Find some companies you might want to use and ask them what they are willing to work with :). Best of luck with your stickers!
Yay, I am so glad it helped! Thanks for watching and taking time out of your day to comment, I appreciate that :). Best of luck with your store, you got this!!
It's also easier to use the lasso selection tool in zoomed in mode to remove the white rather than using an eraser. The lasso has a much finer tip to go in between the fur bits on the bee.

Harmony, THANK YOU! This is really good. Question: If I have a drawing with multiple figures, background... can I do the outline to cut it as 1 picture, and then drop onto a page for a storybook?
Sorry it took so long to reply! Have been taking a bit of a hiatus from TH-cam, but will be back early next year with lots of new artist interviews and a few tutorials :). Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! In general, if I understand your questions correctly, you can definitely drop it onto the page for a storybook as one image. It will be a question of whether you like the style with the cut out and the background etc., but technically it should be an option. Hope you were able to find a solution in the mean time that works for you!
Harmony this is a great video. Do you think there is a "best size" for making physical paintings that would eventually be printed larger? I got conflicting advice on that and am trying to work it out
Sorry it took so long to reply! Have been taking a bit of a hiatus from TH-cam, but will be back early next year with lots of new artist interviews and a few tutorials :). Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! As for your question, I am not sure. I am certain you have found an answer by now, but in general: the larger you paint, the easier it will be. Otherwise you need a very high resolution with the scanner to blow it up large. However, you also need to keep in mind the size of your scanner. If you paint too large, you will have to stitch the scanned image back together into one, because it will not fit onto the scanner bed. I always paint small so I am a bad artist to answer this question well! Hope you find a great solution :)
It seems that removing background of the scanned art is the default way. That makes sense. But is there any style which makes more sense to keep the paper background?
Hiya! I have noticed some artists recently just cutting out the image close to it, i.e. leaving a tiny white border around the shape. Then placing that on a different color background when they are making a pattern. I definitely think this can look beautiful too, and is a stylistic choice you can make as an artist ✅
Hello! Thanks for watching and asking! I do not have any recommendation on this topic. I know many people choose external hard drives for backup. I really like cloud-based options myself. Sorry I am not more help on this topic!
this is an awesome tutorial. my next question would be - i need to add back in some small details i needed to remove to clean up the artwork. Whats the next step to do that? For example my style has little bubbles and tiny lines added around the work, whats the best way to add back in?
Hi Veronica, do you want to add the original back or recreate the same on the scanned version? I would recommend adding a new procreate layer and testing out different procreate brushes as you draw in that new layer to try to recreate the fine details digitally as a last step.
Does it matter what iPad you have? I would like to purchase one and am trying to find a cheaper model than the one you have linked but I just wanted to know if there's a certain year/model that this process works better or worst with? I don't mind spending more money if it's worth it but if I can get away with a cheaper option I'd rather that. Thanks.
Do you have an entire course on how to become a self taught illustrator ? Cause if not... Like where do people even go to learn how to use these programs haha! Are you self taught or did you study in college? Do you illustrate ever digitally or do you always do handdrawn? Thank you for this video tutorial... Loved it and your bee is perfect.
Hi dear Chantel, thanks so much for watching and leaving this comment! There are definitely online courses like a masters in illustration that one can take, and many many artists offer more targeted courses like how to use a specific Adobe product or procreate for example. There are also lots of courses on picture book illustration. I don‘t have a course myself, but if you have something more specific in mind, I am happy to share about the courses I have heard of for that theme! Sorry this is not a more helpful answer. Feel free to write back and I will answer again :).
Thank you for these instructions! They’re so clear 💕 I have a quick question… I do have a scanner but muy new iPad takes great pictures of my art… the image is bright and the colors are really good. Can I use my iPad instead of my scanner?
Hello Alexa, Wendy and Angie! I just posted an answer of thought of when Angie asked a similar question below. That suggestion did not occur to me just now, so I bet it is no longer helpful for you :(. If in the mean time you found a different way, please share your way in the comments for others to try! :) And thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for posting this it is very informative! May I ask what tablet do you think is the best to purchase? I do not have one I only have a MacBook Air but I am in desperate need of a tablet for the purposes that you have shown in this video.
Very helpful. Allí want is to do is to be able to combine certain elements from my different paintings and have them printed into cards, etc. for my personal use. Is it possible to scan directly into my iPad w/o using a PC? Thanks for a great video
Hi Angie! I don’t use them so cannot recommend a particular one, but there are several scanner apps for iPad in the app store. If they allow you to select a high DPI (or have those as a default), that could be an alternative. Then you would still simply import the file into Procreate. If you have each image on a separate layer, you can easily delete the background and create a beautiful composite image by drag and dropping each layer until you like the composition. Let me know if you have additional questions/ try and this is unclear.
Nice work but when you said you are not very good at tracing around the drawing that was when you almost made a mistake. You have to say you are pretty good at this and then you will be less likely to make any mistakes. My friend Mavis Nicholson once suggested I try this type of design work. You can see her on one of my play lists interviwing Elizabeth Taylor. Sadly she died last year. The water colour bee you created and designed. I thought you might put it in that colourful garden image on your laptop about 37 seconds into the video. Now I'm inspired, by your creativity. I will try to improve my novel book cover design that I simply scanned from a water colour drawing I made.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a kind and thoughtful comment. You are right: the way we speak about ourselves and to ourselves matters, and I should be kinder and more confident when I do! I will try to remember. Thanks for reminding me :). I will have to have a look at your playlist too! And I hope you created something you love, if you did re-do your cover. Wishing you a great day!
Hi Harmony. I love this video and your drawling! I’ve been struggling to make the background transparent, and clean up the scar, in Affinity Photo, after following a course where the teacher uses photoshop. Then I saw this video of your today and I thought it would be easier on Procreate, as I love it! You mentioned Google Drive, so I downloaded that. Well, 4 hours later, I can’t even put the photo into Google Docs, I can’t import it to Google docs, through Google docs, and I can’t send it to Google docs…. I’m about ready to destroy my desktop I’m so frustrated! I can’t even email it to myself and open it on my iPad, where I have Procreate. It’s 4.38pm now, and I’ve been at this all day and haven’t gotten anywhere! - Oh, and I’ve just noticed you haven’t checked on this channel for a year….. Something tells me I’m not going to get this artwork done today…….
Hello there :) What makes you think I have not checked on the channel in a year? I am paused on creating new videos until late winter/early spring, but I do check in a bad try to answer comments about once a week. Yours seemed more urgent :). I am so sorry you are experiencing such troubles and setbacks trying to get Google Drive up and running, and alternatively emailing the file to yourself. Can you describe what error messages or issues you are encountering? I am no expert, but I can try to help if I know the answer or if I can find a solution online.
This was a very informative video, thanks for sharing - I wish that this scanner worked with my 2019 MacBook Pro, it is so cost-effective but it was unfortunately not compatible (even with the dongle converter and software)
Hi Jannah, I am so sorry it did not work for you. I am still on a 2015 MacBook though I update the operating system to keep current, but surely it will stop working soon. What scanner did you end up purchasing to go with your 2019 MacBook Pro?
@@HarmonyHardin @Harmony Hardin Illustration I am budgeting for the Epson V600 (~$250) - I am hoping it will capture the subtle washes of watercolor, as my cheap 3 in one I have right now does not :(
Scan at 600. 72 for web (unless you want people stealing your high res work) 150 to 300 for printing. 150 is sufficient most of the time if your image is sized right.
I was selecting automatically and losing a lot of the lighter parts of my paintings, and then having to use Procreate watercolor brush to try to correct🤦🏻♀️ now I’m having another problem too, when I save my designs and try to use it later but on a smaller size, it get blurry. Or if I want to create compositions using the same design over and over on the same sheet, they also come out blurry. Do you know how to fix that?
I am not sure if this will help you, but I do sometimes experience such issues in Procreate and will be looking at these settings next time before I resize. I have not tested it yet myself but it sounds like an interesting approach to try: adventureswithart.com/quality-loss-resizing-procreate/
I am just exploring this scanner myself but I am able to find that resolution setting there while it seems limited to a max of 600dpi in the Photo option. Someone (Chinese man?) does a review of this Canon Lide 400 on TH-cam using a PC and a setting called Scan Gear which is not available on Mac. I think Driver is the equivalent?
Thank you so much for sharing! I tried a few times to scan my artworks, but I'm not sure if it's just a problem with my scanner because mine always turn out super dull and even with the wrong colors 🙄Super annoying, but I won't give up! 😀Yours looks so amazing, the bee is just perfect 🥰
Thanks for watching and commenting! My first scans also looked that way. It got even worse when I then printed them out for a portfolio for a conference, it was truly embarrassing. It was dull and dark. When I started experimenting with the settings, things got much better. The switch to TIFF for me did wonders, and the higher DPI, too. I know this is nothing new from what I said in the video, but definitely worth playing around with until you find the right settings for your art work. Worst case scenario, sometimes I up the contrast/vibrancy a bit in Procreate in post-editing, but I try to avoid it if possible. Let me know how it goes!
Hello Harmony I really love all your videos. There’s something that I’ve been struggling with of late a lot is converting my hand painted art into seamless pattern on Procreate. I’ll be so glad if you could help me out with it. Please
Hello! I am so sorry that it took me so long to reply. I do not currently have a video on that process, maybe in the future. But you have already waited long enough :). If you have not already found a solution, I would propose combining the instructions from my video "how to digitize your artwork" to get your watercolor digitiyed, then hop to with videos from @BardotBrush or @BeeJayDeL to understand the repeat pattern piece in Procreate. It is not much different from a fully digital pattern, once you have all your pieces scanned in. I hope that helps!
Hi Harmony this was super helpful and thank you for sharing. One quick question. When you scan do you find that you lose the brightness abs vivid colours you may have used a little .. so the scan is more muted than the original or am I missing something I should be doing. I think I have the same scanner as you. J
Dear Juli, thanks so much for taking the time to watch this video and comment. I am really happy to hear it was helpful! I looked back at my settings in the scanner software, and did not see any additional settings I had configured that would have an impact on color. I do recall the first few times I scanned watercolor, it was very muted/faint. The colors were totally off. Once I switched to a higher DPI and most critically scanning in the TIFF format instead of JPEG, that issue mostly resolved itself. Sometimes I do find the color needs a bit more oomph. In that case, I add a layer on top in Procreate and use the watercolor brush to add some more saturation. Alternatively, I select the little wand icon for adjustments in Procreate, and adjust either the Saturation, Brightness or Color Balance to get more vibrancy. I am sorry, those are probably things you have tried already and not some new trick. I hope it helps anyway!
Hiya! I have had this happen. For me it was because there were tiny specs of dust on the glass. Give it a real good wipe down for example with a microfiber cloth and try again. If that does not resolve it, I would suggest contacting the manufacturer as they often have other suggestions for troubleshooting. Hope it gets cleared up!
@@HarmonyHardin I bought it down to the technicians and they were like we dont repair these... So sad I was really looking forward to making prints with a scanner but now the streaks made me unclear what o do next
Hi Henry, that is definitely possible! I just started using Illustrator in the past couple of weeks. Before that I only knew how to use Procreate. That is why I do not have a video on AI or PS, as I am so new in those applications myself. I found this video for you though, which might be what you are looking for. I would like to purchase one and am trying to find a cheaper model than the one you have linked but I just wanted to know if there's a certain year/model that this process works better or worst with? I don't mind spending more money if it's worth it but if I can get away with a cheaper option I'd rather that. Thanks.
Thank you so much for all of this advice! I was searching for information to scan my illustrations and this video was what I needed!!🙂
Thank you for watching, Galetta! So happy to hear it helped ❤️
I wanna know this too!
Me too!
Thank you
Thank you so much for posting this it is very informative!
Amazing tutorial 🥰🤩 thanks for share
That comment means so much to me, @blocnotesartstudio! Thanks so much for watching and leaving that comment 💞
THANK YOU ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

@@HarmonyHardin @Harmony Hardin Illustration I am budgeting for the Epson V600 (~$250) - I am hoping it will capture the subtle washes of watercolor, as my cheap 3 in one I have right now does not :(
This is really useful! Thank you for sharing. 🙌🙌🙌
You are so welcome, it makes me very happy to know it is useful. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment ✨💞✨.
Scan at 600. 72 for web (unless you want people stealing your high res work) 150 to 300 for printing. 150 is sufficient most of the time if your image is sized right.
Love it! Very easy and informative. Much more eficiente than the way I do.
I am so happy to hear it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! ✨💕✨ How have you been doing it up until now?
I was really hoping you would explore the Driver scan setting on this scanner as it can do a much higher resolution (1200)
I haven’t heard of that but am intrigued. Can you tell me and everyone reading the comments section of this video more about that?
I am just exploring this scanner myself but I am able to find that resolution setting there while it seems limited to a max of 600dpi in the Photo option. Someone (Chinese man?) does a review of this Canon Lide 400 on TH-cam using a PC and a setting called Scan Gear which is not available on Mac. I think Driver is the equivalent?
Thank you for sharing this important information. I will check it out!
This was so so helpful, thank you!

@@HarmonyHardin This is a massive help! Thank you so much!!! 💕
Thanks!
You are so welcome! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! ❤️
If I airdrop it from my desktop to my iPad will I lose any quality?
I just purchase this scanner and there are streaks appearing on the scans. have you encountered this?
Yes he's gorgeous
You definitely will get picked up for a licensing deal
What an incredibly kind comment! Thank you so much! :)
What if I don't have an iPad? :( what can I do?
Can you Digitize the art and it be editable for illustrator or photoshop?
Hi Henry, that is definitely possible! I just started using Illustrator in the past couple of weeks. Before that I only knew how to use Procreate. That is why I do not have a video on AI or PS, as I am so new in those applications myself. I found this video for you though, which might be what you are looking for. Hope it helps! th-cam.com/video/rrpGkszbjO8/w-d-xo.html
Maybe try using multiply
Thanks for this tip! Would you be willing to elaborate on that suggestion, so that others watching the video can benefit from your idea? Thanks so much!
WHAT 20:59 wow!
Isn’t that cool? It’s the high DPI that makes that possible 😊
Now you have a new option: use AI tools to enhance ordinary photos into high-resolution, print-ready images.
you can erase with Two fingers tapping
Great tip, thanks for mentioning it! 👍🏻💗
Hi! I have a little probablem, my editor told me to draw 25×25, how can I convert ?🥲🥲
Hi Irene! Oh no! I have not been in this situation before and am not certain I understand exactly, but maybe this will help you? procreate.com/handbook/procreate/actions/actions-canvas/
