  • The cable routing on the Shimano Sora R3000 and Claris R2000 front derailleurs can be a bit tricky compared to the previous models. In this video, I go over some of the common mistakes and make sense of Shimano's tech manual on cable routing and setup. I made a couple other videos with links at the end of this video covering the last 2 generations of Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, and Dura-Ace front derailleurs with more detailed set-up procedures, which is the same as the R3000 and R2000 front derailleurs.

    Thank you! Shimano now doesn't include a users manual. They have a QR code, but that didn't take me to the manual. I just didn't feel like dealing with it so I searched and found your video. This tells me exactly what I wanted to know.

    Cable routing was the problem for me. It's not totally obvious like other front mechs. If you are unsure (like I was) of how the gear cable goes through it, scroll to 4:25 and it will all become clearer. Thanks for this video Joey.

    thanks, Joey- like others have said, it was that pinch bolt setup that had me- allowing cable slip. underneath the pin and next to the bolt did the trick- thank you!

    I have found these like a bit more initial tension than other front derailleurs. With most front derailleurs I pull out the slack with my fingers, to not interfere with low limit. To get one of these Sora's working I had to use pliers, and pull pretty snug, and fine tune with the in line barrel adjuster.

    My issue was cable alignment and the front mech needed to be cleaned as the cable tension was impossible to set with varying levels of spring tension depending on what chain ring I was on due to sticky pivots.

    I still have an issue where I can't get the chain to the big ring. I think it's due to the cable tension but it's tight.
    I changed the H limit and it doesn't change anything. If I put pressure on the derailer or apply more pressure on the shifter it will go on the outer ring

    Just bought a new bike with Sora group. Everything seems to be OK except the front derailleur, which I found to be too stiff. My friends Tiagra is way smoother. I have already checked cables, housing, positioning etc, and it still demands an "additional" effort to front shifting. Would like to hear other opinions about that.

      Check cable guide below bottom bracket of the frame, could be more friction

    • @alanbarrosdeoliveira5617
      @alanbarrosdeoliveira5617 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hellborn7514 Came back here after all these months to say I finally solved my problem using Jagwire's Road Elite Sealed Shift Kit. This kit comes with a very thin teflon housing (which goes inside the "real" housing) and it extends all the way from STI up to derailleur, indeed sealing the cable avoiding contact with any external agent (water, dirt etc). Specifically below bottom bracket the friction reduction was incredible. Now my front shift is as smooth as the rear one. Couldn't be happier 🙂

    Question for ya, Joey. What do you think of the new 'arm' design on the latest iteration of Shimano FD's? I'm still running 10 speed 5700 stock groupset, but with a 5800 FD with the longer arm. It seems that they got rid of that idea and now have these newer shorter arms and other gizmo's. Is the shifting vastly superior with these newer FD's and RD's on 105, Ultegra and DA, or is it just slightly better?
    A 5800 FD works well with 5700 components as the chainring spacing didn't change, yet with the newer stuff like 11 speed, cable pull ratio and the new chainring spacings, I can't use anything newer than 5800. I'm not gonna buy a new groupset for my 2011 bike. I'll probably just save up and buy a whole new bike with a newer groupset on it, when I actually have some dough.
    Have a great weekend, mah man.
    Regards from England

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I've never tried a 5800 front derailleur with a 5700 shifter. The long arm style works well on most bikes, but there isn't a definitive standard among manufacturers as to what angle the cable should be from under the BB to the front derailleur, so on some bikes with the angle really shallow, it's difficult to get the shifter to start initially moving the derailleur. The newer style 5801 doesn't have the long arm, but it's the exact same ratio as the 5800, it's just easier to get started into it's shift on all bicycles and it's got a cable tension adjuster built in.
      Thanks for taking the time to give feedback and ask questions! I really appreciate it!!

    The cable routing on these derailleurs is terrible, even if you set it correctly, if you have the inner stop screw set up with the derailleur quite close to the frame (as that’s where it needs to be the correct setup on some bikes) sometimes the cable will not shift the derailleur from the little ring to the big one, because the angle/leverage is all wrong, and it really doesn’t seem to matter how you adjust the cable/ set up the clamping arrangement, the design is terrible. Also in your video when you pull up a picture near the end after looking at the Instructions that cable seems to be routed incorrectly…. I think apart from the fact the cable is all frayed up, it should be clamped on the “outside“ not the “inside“ of the plate behind the bolt. If that makes sense, it’s almost like the cable needs to be curved all the way round and down and out the bottom

    Looks like you helped a bunch of people here so good on you. Personally I came looking to see how to route cables on a new sora brifter so it wasn't helpful at all to me. going from the title it would have been far more useful to see a sora being installed (there's some new outer cable bits it seems, narrow arrow like ends) so a downvote for me but I hope a constructive one. Peace.

    • @JoeyMesa

      I changed the video description a little so hopefully it's less confusing. Most all of the issues I've experienced are with how the shift cable attaches to the derailleur.

    • @duathlete827
      @duathlete827 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@djdelarosa25 Front derailleur is usually for 2 or three chain rings. Mine is for 2 and is a Shimano Claris FD-R2000. My rear cassette is an 8 sp. If you have the same model, make sure you use the backup plate it comes with along with adjusting the support screw if your derailleur mounts via a braze-on. The converter judgement tool that it comes with will indicate if the converter adjustment should be on or off. Mine said set it to the off position but it actually works better using the on position.
