Yea, that album took it to another notch from Sweetnighter. From Nubian Sundance to Jungle Book (like Jaco's John and Mary playing with his children, just brings tears to your eyes) , Such a beautiful album.

It's amazing to think of the amount of music memorisation Chester has done in his career. What with Weather Report, Zappa, Genesis and Phil Collins solo he memorised alot of notes, grooves, figures, arrangements and cues.

Jazz as a spiritual instrument? Absolutely. This group actually changed the consciousness of the entire planet. Many a low vibratory entity was eliminated through this higher consciousness evoking band. That's the purpose of jazz in its entirety.

I love jazz for this reason. Jazz is my approach to life! Improvisation and unbridled expression of the inner self…what could be more spiritual? I am so thankful for this music and all it’s brought to my life.

Alphonso Johnson played a fretless bass, before Jaco did.He never boasted about his abilities or him being the first to play a fretless in the band.A very good read is " ELEGANT PEOPLE ".A history about the band Weather Report. By Curt Bianchi..Backbeat books..publisher.In this book it talks about the band from the very start ,the line up changes, the music changes challenges etc.A must read for those who follow this band.As Joe Zawinual said the greatest band that ever was.

Alphonso paved the way for Jaco to fit in to the vibe of Weather Report which was more of a progressive approach than Miroslav Vitous had envisioned. Alphonso was my favorite bassist from his work with George Duke- I liked that fuzz sound that he used occasionally.

Alphonso Johnson put out some great live grooves with Santana. Santana sounded more like jazz than rock at times when Johnson played with him in the late 1980s.

Everybody keeps on raving about Jaco and Erskine, but these guys had a completely different groove down. The early Erskine was simply out-classed by Pastorius (with a few exceptions) but Chester and Al were on that same high level. And look at the size of Chester's cymbals and hi-hat. Some noise.....

That's how I felt about the first album by Chick Corea Elektric Band. It was like a puzzle to me at age fifteen, listening to the way all the parts intertwined. I bought that album because I was reading a lot of Modern Drummer magazine and I kept seeing all these ads with Dave Weckl in them, so I had to see what all the fuss was about. I've been a huge fan ever since.

The kid, Alphonso Johnson, was very influential when he hit the scene. One of my favourite WR albums once they became more composition oriented is Tale Spinnin’, with he and Ndugu Chancler on drums. Following this album they would do Black Market, and Jaco would join. Zawinul showing off some wicked piano chops here.

Unreal-eakin' Joe. I am just blown by this music...AGAIN. in 2014, tonight. Heard this version of WP band in '75 (?), similar versions of Mysterious Traveller et all, of at Michigan Theater, Detroit. Just bleeewwww me out, then, and again, now. But you know, now, I see up close in this video, this spirit of this band and how it seemed to rEALLy catch the power of all players together in this special film. Stunning performance in Berlin. What a different vibe than Amerika...I read an earlier comment on the various Jaco WP versions, et all. I agree to a point. But they all had their own character...Joe Z...Just is so INCREDIBLE isn't he? I mean he was a genius and and told stories with every note...whew, that is an art! - - I think this and the live Sweetwater period were golden, personally, as that was my first exposure, after their first self-titled LP. & then Body Electric just threw me into space jazz, even more following SunRa's electronic space mystic approach, which I also just latched onto...seeing them for the first time in New Mexico in '81 as part of the NM Jazz Workshop... This WP band, however, with the melodic beauty of the Shorter, Alphonso, and Acuna......wow. It caught me right now, again, even stronger....Thank you Josef Erich Zawinul July 7, 1932-Sept. 11, 2007. Enriched by this band's music...what a gift to have heard this in my life.

Marc Worthington I can add to this: when Steve Hackett left Genesis, and the remaining members decided to remain a trio but add 2 part-time members to play live with them, of course Chester Thompson became the drummer... and Alphonso Johnson was one of the final 2 choices for the 2nd touring member of Genesis. They essentially let Mike Rutherford make the final decision, and Mike chose Daryl Stuermer primarily because he thought it would be easier to incorporate a guitar player who also played bass, not a bass player who also played guitar like Alphonso. If I remember right, Phil Collins still used Alphonso for some of his early solo stuff, so there weren't any hard feelings.

Amazing band at this period. Far in advance of anything around really, in the jazz world at least. I think they've just re-released the album (with extra material) re-mastered in a box set with the other 5 early albums. I'll be heading down to my local shop to find this. Thanks for uploading.

Saw these guys. Wow end of concert a Joe looks at Chester to see if he has one more song in him. Chester shakes his head no, and that was it show over. Never saw a drummer put so much into a performance.
