I GUARANTEE no one as a GM would've picked Giannis in the 2013 Draft with the 1st pick, let alone the top 5 picks. My Milwaukee Bucks luckily got him and he's the greatest steal in NBA Draft history at Pick #15! I remember it pretty clearly, he was considered pretty unpolished with shooting and dribbling as weaknesses. We drafted him based on 1, maybe 2 things: A) His potential was unlimited as he was only 18 still growing with the wingspan of a fuckin Pterodactyl (we've seen that now) and (B) he had a great work ethic.
I remember being happy with the pick because #15 overall picks are usually expected to be role players at best, and I saw his ceiling as like a fringe All-star But I DOUBT anyone thought he could be as amazing as he is today. He was also tough to evaluate because he was basically self-made, never really had elite coaching/training and his competition level was in the Greek League's 3rd Division in 2011 and only the 2nd Division in 2012 where his stock was then rising fast but the Greek 2nd Division is NOWHERE close to the NBA- probably around a top 20-50 D1 college program (?) where he averaged like 10 PPG and decent rebounding.
He improved by A LOT every year though (like +5 PPG every season!!) and the time I remember really noticing how good he could be (like MVP level, which NO ONE expected when he was drafted) was when we took the #1 seeded Celtics to 7 games as an 8 seed basically thanks to him alone (Khris Middleton was another surprise that took several years to develop) and we are a small-market team so thank god he's super loyal. He was already like All-star level at that point and CLEARLY willing to put in the work to be the best so it's been a dream come true b/c we weren't a contender since like 2000 w/ Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson.

I love this channel, but I think that this is a rare occasion where Jimmy is off a bit because the vast majority of the time NBA teams make a good decision with the #1 pick.
It's true that maybe the “best” players aren’t picked every year number 1, but the goal is not to pick the best individual player. The goal is to strengthen the team in the hope of winning a championship. That said, if you have a need on a team and you pick an eventual All-Star with the first pick, you more than accomplished the goal. In fact, in most cases, the team is probably better off.
12 of 40 (30%) were circled as the “best” in their draft year since 1980.
However, you certainly didn’t make a bad choice if the player you choose #1 is eventually inducted in the HoF or become an NBA All-Star.
Add Hall of Fame players: 17 of 40 (42.5%)
    - Worthy(82), Sampson(83), Olajuwon(84), Ewing(85) Iverson(96)
    Add All-Stars: 31 of 40 (77.5%)
    - Carroll(80), Aguirre(81), Daugherty(86), Manning(88), Coleman(90), L.Johnson(91), G.Robinson(94), Brand(99), Martin(00), Bogut(05), Rose(08), Griffin(09), Wall(10), Irving(11)
Subtract Players who were plagued by unforeseen early-career injuries: 31 of 38 (81.6%)
    - Ellison(89), Oden(07)
So, I would say that around 81.6% of the time the 1st round pick is a solid pick with the data they have, which is pretty damn good!
Okay, now look who is left over:
    - Joe Smith(95) Played for 21 years in the league!
    - Andrea Bargbabni(06) played 10 seasons, 14.4ppg / 4.6 rpg (~20ppg when starting)
    - Andrew Wiggins(14) active 7 seasons, ~20ppg / 4.4rpg
    - Ayton(18) - Certainly potential, All-Rookie Team, Not a bust
    Major Busts 4/40 (10%):
    - Olowokandi(98), K.Brown(01), Bennett(13), Fultz(17)
So, I would flip this conclusion and say that it’s pretty incredible that there is only a bust selected once a decade. And that “the best” is a debatable label, but the vast majority of the time the 1st player picked in the draft is a good, solid pick.
