I'm stumped how someone at 6'3" would lower the wr250r. I'm only 6' 1" with 33 inseam and I find the stock height fine. You want the height in the dirt. Dirt bikes usually have a 39-40" seat height for the clearance you need off-road. I love this lil bike. I went with 47 tooth sprocket with D606 rear and MT-21 front but have yet to ride the bike with all my mods because I'm still modding the bike.
Yeah, I found I really don't utilize the full travel of the suspension since I'm not taking any crazy jumps. I'd rather have an easier time finding my footing so I drop the bike less in the really rough hill climbs, water crossings, etc. All personal preference. I've never taken the bike on the highway for an extended period of time so I don't really need a high top speed. Your mods turned out excellent by the way dude thanks for all your great vids.
Im 5ft 8 and i have been riding stock height with d606 tires also, but im defintely gonna do the inch lowering myself, with a 30 in inseam, its just a bit too tall for me for the single track trails we have around me.
Everyone has their own comfort level as far as seat height goes so, maybe you should respect his choice of comfort and tire choice. Some of us only have one bike to do multiple things so compromise is necessary.
I got an 08 wr250r & rode the thunk with stock sprocket's for a long time. Never had an issue stalling going up hills or through any terrain. I think its all about how you ride. But in the end i put a 49 tooth sprocket on my bike & love it. Should have done that a long time ago. Aside from that great video....have fun & ride safe.....
Just picked up a 2020 here in Southern Vermont. Stock tires and I can't decide between 47 or 48 teeth. I really need to pick one and just install it and see how I like it.
Nice video. I bought a 2012 wr250r a few months ago, I love the bike. I also put D606 tires on it. Tires made a huge difference. Keep the videos coming!
Thank you! I’m in the market and have narrowed it down to the husky FE250 and the WR. I know the husky is dirt capable, but I’m hesitant to spend the extra $$. I’m gonna be riding mostly on road but want a bike that is built like dirt bike. Seems like we’re on the same page there. After seeing this it seems like with the right sprocket the WR is more than capable. I will be getting the WR! Thanks!
Appreciate your perspective on both the tire choice but also the sprocket upgrade. The 2 tooth loss perspective makes sense and pushes me to consider the 49. Never considered that aspect. Also the whole reason for paying a bit more for a WR was for the higher propensity for dirt capability in a dual sport vs the others. Paired with the right rubbers makes it even more dirt friendly even though I’ll ride in street some. Thanks for the insight and video! Have fun out there bud.
I hope people that are thinking of buying this bike are not judging it by this video. the wr250r is an amazing bike. I have on mine for 3 years and have over nine thousand miles on it fully stock. the engine fully breaks in around 4000 miles and the bike gets faster my top speed is 95 miles an hour and I weigh 245 lb icruise on California highways at 80 miles an hour I have done Road Trips of 600 miles round-trip at 80 to 85 miles an hour and I've done that at least 4 times the reason why people change out that rear sprocket is because they're not revving the engine High Enough to meet the full potential. that engine loves to be revved it will make power up to 10,000 RPMs. off-road I have done everything that the bigger bikes have done I just do it a little slower. the trails hill climbs or down Hills that I did not do was not because of the bikes capability it was because of my own fear or lack of skill. I rode the stock tires up to 5000 miles. and now I am running the Kenda 80/20 tires because now I am more Street orientated. this is a great bike and you cannot compare it to any other motorcycle or dual sport. to see reasons why this bike is loved around the world and so highly respected I encourage you to look up the wr250r videos in Australia.
H Pac most of us change the stock sprocket to get performance off road. I live in the black hills of SD, and we have some pretty intense single tracks here where th incline is super steep. Having that lower gearing helps so much. But yeah if your not in the mountains then stock is perfect for u.
Woodrow Cooper Yes I agree, if the bike sole purpose is to be off road, because a rider wants a low maintenance dirt bike. Then it would require some upgrades, every dirt upgrade you make will take away from the street performance. Then guys make videos saying the bike sucks on highways because it's too slow. I'm just trying to say the bike is a perfect 50/50 bike from the factory. The other thing I'm trying to say is, if you want a well-performing dirt bike "buy a dirt bike". Other videos that give me a good laugh is when people compare the wr250r to the DRZ400 and they say that WR sucks lol. "It's a 400cc bike!!!" What did they think was going to happen. It is nice to know that the only bike it compares to has almost twice the engine size.
H Pac i agree with you, it is a perfect 50/50 bike straight from the factory. I myself like my wr to be 70/30. I want a low maintenance dirt bike that i can ride from my house to the trails. But I also own a street bike for when I just wanna ride on the road.
Woodrow Cooper You hit the nail on the head. For me in the L.A. area, I use it to split lane's like a hot knife through butter. Have you ever seen 25 miles of traffic lol...
I have 13/48 now, but I’m changing to 13/53. I like to be able to go slow, and I’ve run out of torque in the rocks. I think I will have to move the back of the chain guard up.
It's true, it stalls very easy in the rough stuff with stock gearing. I found fuel economy worse though.I tried 14 x 49 but like 14 x 48 for mixed use. At some point it's like you get a new low gear but your 2nd gear is like your old first and so on. I use 14 front to avoid swingarm rub from the chain. Last swap I went back to 13 though.
Great, I'm glad I could help. The 49 tooth is ideal for someone who likes to venture off the trail (quite literally). It's great for tractoring through brush that's as tall as the bike and navigating through other really tough terrain. Probably not the best size for highway riding, I might recommend a 47 for more versatility. However if you plan on switching sprockets regularly for different riding, you might be able to go with a 49 tooth but then swap out the front to a 14 when you want to go on the highway. Haven't tried this though so can't say for sure.
coming from a guy that has only riden a 1975 honda xl350, the stock gearing on this bike is trash. i went to a 46 tooth rear and man is it night a day you can actually put it in first and put along now. stock gearing 1st gear was very high. on my old honda first gear you can just put without it almost stalling. first upgrade to my wr was rear sprocket switch to 46tooth and skid plate and then hang guards! love this bike
the front "lowering" was all in your front forks. looking at your top clamp the forks stick wayyyyy out. That shortens your wheel base and makes the front veryy agile for single track and such, but at the cost of stability.
I know what you mean about getting weird looks....I live in the country and when I ride my WR to town, EVERYONE looks at me weird, it's hilarious!! I just play along...when I see them looking at me, I start looking around all sketchy like, as if watching out for the cops...lol I have never seen another dual sport anywhere on the road where I live so people just assume I came off the farm with my dirt bike. I actually had one guy ask me if I had some kind of special license to ride "that bike" on the street. He seen my veteran plate and thought that, for some reason the military authorized some special license to me for it....I just told him I stole the plate off some dudes Harley and then took off. I am 5'9" and 185lbs. At first, I found the WR to be quite awkward trying to balance it on my tippy toes when coming to a stop...now, I am just used to it, I just skootch my ass to one side and lean. I used to want to get the Yamalink to help lower it a bit but I am just used to it now.....all personal preference I guess. Did putting the larger sprocket on your bike screw up your speedometer? Obviously, you would have had to replace the chain with a bigger one....also, does the change in gearing get rid of the jerky throttle in first gear?
The speedometer is way off now. Probably by like 25%. The gearing helped the jerky throttle a little. I have another vid on adjusting the TPS to try and get rid of the jerky throttle if you're interested.
I just got a set of D606's and a 48T rear sprocket. Those tires were a bear to get onto the rims using spoons. Some advice: standing on the pegs(and having the right body position) will improve your offroad ability more than ANY aftermarket parts! Your bike will find grip much better, it takes few rides to get used to...but definitely worth it!
WOOOOO smash Hope you didn’t brake anything .. shit happens .. I just picked up a 2018 and did the usual mods. No motor adds. Good videos. Around Bend Oregon out !
wait your 6ft3 and lowered your wr250, why? im 5ft8 and had it lowered as well when i first got my wr250r but went back once i got use to the bike. i paid for the yama link and the 300+ seat concept lowered seat. in my opinion the concept seat was the best option (not the price) because wr riders just want to lower the seat height not ground clearance and remember the reason the wr250r is the best 250 duel sport is because its the most capable with the most HP and better suspension and higher ground clearance with best maintenance intervals.at 6ft3 you just need to ride some more.
great video and great commentary. and great bike. bash plate underneath? hand guards are must in the woods. but those stock mirrors may get broken off. also, if you dont ride two up, u might ditch the passenger foot pegs. thanks for posting
I went to a 47 on the back seems to me a perfect compromise really good tral gear, it will hit 70 with not much wrap out but anything more it is screaming also it will pull the front wheel up with not much effort. With the stock gear it was almost impossible.
nice man i'm about a half hour from there, and have a wr250r now, send me a message if you're ever looking to ride, always looking for people to ride with
I’m 250 lbs, 63yr old. Would love to get a WR but all the reviews on power concern me. I want it for trail riding, no jumps or racing. Can anyone comment please? I can’t find one to test ride.
250lb might be a little hefty for these low compression 250's. I have a klx250 with a few less hp than the WR. Im 215lbs, it was fine for offroad or around town once u swap the front sprocket to 13t. But max speed was 81mph, hills a lot less. Most bigger guys go for the DRZ cuz of the power and torque
The trail wings aren’t too bad after the hey broke in. Just lower air pressure some and soften your suspension. They last longer than Dunlop’s. Yeah the wings are better on road. Dunlop is better in the mud for sure, and better off road.
is the gearing for off-road really that bad??? you need to feather the clutch anyway on dirt so exact gearing is not necessary. Planning to get that bike soon.
+Enduro Riders I think the gearing was definitely biased towards road riding. For a dual sport that might be what some people want, but it just didn't cut it off road, especially in any thick stuff.
+Pete It's not really a problem it's more just preference. For example my KDX200 feels about the same as this now. I like to be able to ride at very low speeds without having to feather the clutch like you would in stock gearing.
Really I'm not sure since this mod threw the speedo totally out of whack and I don't have a GPS setup. My gut feeling is probably not now that I've felt the bike out more. Maybe 70 if you're tucked in and right under the rev limiter. Sorry I can't be of more help.
+fender7802 Okay thank you for responding. Still wondering about buying one of these. I ride a RM250 for woods and mountain climbing and was just thinking about the switch.
Yeah sorry about the late response. If you definitely need street legal I think this is the best option if you want a light bike unless you can afford a KTM.
Yes, I used the turn signal bracket from the yoshimura fender eliminator kit, which is designed to hold the stock blinkers. I just called yoshimura and ordered that bracket, I think it was about $20. Then I used the normal DRC 2 license plate holder and tail light. The yoshimura bracket needed to be dremeled a little bit to align with the screw holes, but it wasn't hard. Just use some big fender washers so the screw head doesn't slip through the enlarged hole.
Yes, I tried it, but unfortunately it didn't improve anything. I'd still recommend giving it a try, lots of people report mixed results. Pick up those little vacuum caps at auto zone to plug the end of the hose, makes it real easy.
I had to rewind to see what caused the drop. Looks like the way that branch was angled when you attempted to go over it was the reason. Which I know you figured out. I'm 6'3 also, 200lbs, 36inch inseam I'm planning on buying one and definitely getting the after market tires. Did you have the suspension adjusted to your weight (plus gear etc)? I hear that helps.
I've actually never bothered with adjusting the suspension to my weight, it always felt fine out of the box. I think you'll find a 36 inseam makes this bike so easy to ride, just wish the bike was a little lighter, but it's manageable.
fender7802 You could make it a little lighter with mods but of course that will cost a pretty penny.I heard that the weight helps it not get as squirrely though. Later.
It was a video about gearing and you didn’t once show the bike starting in first gear from a stop. You explained first gear but every single time you started from a stop you were in 2nd. A demo of first would have been appropriate and a beneficial add to this video. 🤷♂️
I hope you did not forget to install Speedohealer v4 to correct your speedomenet and odometer (compulsory item once you change your stock sprockets and/or tires unless you do not care whether your instrument readings are correct).
+kparks24 Do you mean fender? It's the DRC Edge fender eliminator with the Yoshimura bracket for the stock turn signals. Kind of a bizarre solution but I'm happy with the results.
WTF ..IM 5'8" N 160LBS.. thing. is abit tall but ..still ridable n yea. Will get around to lowering. ...maybe..but anyone over 5. 11 shouldn't need to ..but hey if inspires confidence then wth right
+Pete Sure you can walk next to it but you'd be feathering the clutch. I'm not the first person to change gearing on this bike, in fact it's the first thing most people do. When the bike came out in '08 the first mod people jumped right to was a bigger rear sprocket (lots of 46 and 47 tooths). Congrats for hitting 93 on dirt tires, but I think our riding styles are somewhat different.
+MX Hunter Actually I do get a little scared. Some guy in the distance kept giving me the taxi whistle the other day. I must have been on his property.. not sure. Thought he or someone else was going to jump out at me.
I'm stumped how someone at 6'3" would lower the wr250r. I'm only 6' 1" with 33 inseam and I find the stock height fine. You want the height in the dirt. #45 subscribed! I been looking at the WR250R as my first dual sport/adventure bike. I used to live in Boston 20 years ago but never rode around there.
+YamahaR3Racer010 Thanks man!
wait your 6ft3 and lowered your wr250, why? im 5ft8 and had it lowered as well when i first got my wr250r but went back once i got use to the bike. i paid for the yama link and the 300+ seat concept lowered seat. in my opinion the concept seat was the best option (not the price) because wr riders just want to lower the seat height not ground clearance and remember the reason the wr250r is the best 250 duel sport is because its the most capable with the most HP and better suspension and higher ground clearance with best maintenance intervals.at 6ft3 you just need to ride some more.
Looking at getting a used Craigslist 2012 wr with a 48 tooth rear sprocket, with stock that comes with it. Good idea? Yours is an inspiration!
I went with a 48 sproket, perfect single track gearing and still fine on the road
bought my wr250 from Billerica also. How is the 49t working out for you? what is your top speed now?
great vid ...if all goes well i should have one of these by the end of the week
Did all go well?
I have the same set up (plus) and live in NE Mass, where are you riding ? I'm looking for some new locations ...
great video and great commentary. and great bike. bash plate underneath? hand guards are must in the woods. but those stock mirrors may get broken off. also, if you dont ride two up, u might ditch the passenger foot pegs. thanks for posting

How much did your top speed suffer when you changed the sprocket?
Where in MA are you riding here? I'm in the Boston suburbs and there's not much to ride around here on my crf250l..
I'm in the Newburyport MA Area on my wr250r ...
nice man i'm about a half hour from there, and have a wr250r now, send me a message if you're ever looking to ride, always looking for people to ride with
I’m 250 lbs, 63yr old.
Tie One On I bought one already. It has plenty of power. Awesome bike.
I'm 6'1 240 get me up the trails and down the road just fine! But at 53 not looking for speed on the road or in the woods
Hey man great video! I'm curious to see what you have for a radiator protector! What brand is it?
whats size are you running of the dunlop d606?
The trail wings aren’t too bad after the hey broke in. Just lower air pressure some and soften your suspension.
They last longer than Dunlop’s.
Yeah the wings are better on road.
Dunlop is better in the mud for sure, and better off road.
The hey
Weird typo??

Will the bike easily hit 70-75mph still with a 49 tooth?
Really I'm not sure since this mod threw the speedo totally out of whack and I don't have a GPS setup. My gut feeling is probably not now that I've felt the bike out more. Maybe 70 if you're tucked in and right under the rev limiter. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Yeah sorry about the late response. If you definitely need street legal I think this is the best option if you want a light bike unless you can afford a KTM.
+fender7802 No KTM would be nice. I really like the Husqvarna 701's but they're like 11 grand. But yeah I would definitely go with the WR.
Cool well let me know if you got any more questions and I can try and help out
what kind of fender eliminator kit did you use on your bike? it allowed to keep original rear blinkers, right?
Yes, I used the turn signal bracket from the yoshimura fender eliminator kit, which is designed to hold the stock blinkers. I just called yoshimura and ordered that bracket, I think it was about $20. Then I used the normal DRC 2 license plate holder and tail light. The yoshimura bracket needed to be dremeled a little bit to align with the screw holes, but it wasn't hard. Just use some big fender washers so the screw head doesn't slip through the enlarged hole.
awesome!
I also noticed you commented on moto strike unit regaring his flapper mod, did you ended up doing it?
Yes, I tried it, but unfortunately it didn't improve anything. I'd still recommend giving it a try, lots of people report mixed results. Pick up those little vacuum caps at auto zone to plug the end of the hose, makes it real easy.
I did it yesterday and I didn't find much improvement either...
Later.
True, the weight helps make the bike feel more planted, on road especially.
Hey,
I’m a little late to the party as usual. Lol. Do you still own this bike and are you still enjoying?
MRUNDISPUTEDCHAMPION just got mine this week.
Can you post where you got the sprocket from?
how much this your yamaha WR250R sir
will I need new chain when going from stock 42T to 47T ???
+Pizdzirynka1 Stock is actually 43T but yes, you will need a new chain. You can only go up to a 44T with the stock chain
dude...did you have to get a new chain when you switched out the sprocket ?
+DirtRider WR250R Yes, I had to get a new longer chain. I forget the number of links though.
My 13 / 49 tooth rear uses a 112 link chain
“ it’s almost mandatory. You pretty much have to do it” haha well said though. Stock gearing sucks!
Where do you ride in Mass?
NIce vid dude. We should go riding some time
When you get a bike we will go riding :)
did you have to get a new chain ?
+DirtRider WR250R He said yes
To lower the front you just raise the fork tubes up in the triple tree
It was a video about gearing and you didn’t once show the bike starting in first gear from a stop. You explained first gear but every single time you started from a stop you were in 2nd. A demo of first would have been appropriate and a beneficial add to this video. 🤷♂️
I'm glad you can enjoy this bike off road in Massachusetts. I can wait to buy one and find some trails. Have the cops here bothered you much?
ItalianStallion1415 They have not bothered me. i bought mine with a fmf exhaust so it's beyond loud and surprisingly I have not been bothered.
I hope you did not forget to install Speedohealer v4 to correct your speedomenet and odometer (compulsory item once you change your stock sprockets and/or tires unless you do not care whether your instrument readings are correct).
Stock gearing would climb that hill in first no problem I know this cause I have the bike
what finder is that? i got the stock finder and i keep ripping my tag off the bike.
+kparks24 Do you mean fender? It's the DRC Edge fender eliminator with the Yoshimura bracket for the stock turn signals. Kind of a bizarre solution but I'm happy with the results.
+fender7802 yeah my tag is trashed it ripped off the other day I had to go find it.
haha when you fell you just say balls! haha
I have a 2007 WR250F and I rode it in 2nd gear in Alaska with some of the hardest trails and I have never stalled just learn how to rev match.
Bro stand up
WTF ..IM 5'8" N 160LBS.. thing. is abit tall but ..still ridable n yea. Will get around to lowering. ...maybe..but anyone over 5. 11 shouldn't need to ..but hey if inspires confidence then wth right
10:13 dude stock gearing i can walk next to this bike in first gear I think your confused man
+Pete Sure you can walk next to it but you'd be feathering the clutch.
Ya I definitely can’t walk next to mine.. but it’s very easy to get in the power and get it to pull as hard as you want (in most terrains)
山葉最高。
dont u get scared riding in woods alone i always think a goblin will jump out or something
+MX Hunter Actually I do get a little scared. Some guy in the distance kept giving me the taxi whistle the other day. I must have been on his property.. not sure. Thought he or someone else was going to jump out at me.
i was riding once and i saw a old shack thing from like the 1800s and i thought there was something chasing me all the way out of the woods
Nice crash...balls..haha
ha i got 15,000 on my wr
Ha ha I got 50,000km on mine
You need drive chinese scoter not wr 250 r ....
wtf ???? he's giving noob advice
Riding off road alone - not the best idea.
