Whether we stop using oil or not, the global surface temperature will continue to increase, with known and unknown consequences. The opportunity to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels was missed more than 30 years ago, and we are already in an unpredictable future.
This is true. So now we are only left with the choice of either adding to the problem, and increasing the damage and death toll, or taking the foot off the accelerator and mitigating a few billion climate related deaths. The choice is still there to act now and cause less harm than is already locked in.
Serious though the climate debate is, this is not about that, its about some cultists playing at being martyrs so they can feel good about themselves. The fact that their actions are if anything having the totally opposite impact than their stated objectives doesn't appear to bother them, as long as they can get their faces on TV and talk the kind of ideological rubbish we hear in this report.

There is a lot of wisdom in this idea. Often motorists drive on roads, but general tax-payers (many who do NOT drive) pay dearly for the supporting infrastructure and the consequence of cars (eg. health). Oil companies pollute, but it's the public foots the bill for the consequences of that pollution. Politicians call for war, but dare not to step onto the battlefield, nor sacrifice their children. If companies, politicians, etc, were held immediately responsible for their actions, they wouldn't act so brazenly.
@@GraphiteIsCool You're deluded if you think that the volume of roads, or the majority of maintenance and infrastructure is for service vehicles and deliveries. No, they are built for CARS; millions and millions of cars, and the space at all of those cars require. Why should a person that doesn't drive, pay for the costs of your cars? Drivers can pay 98% of the cost, and the other 2% can be paid for by individuals that don't drive for "food" deliveries or public transportation. And you don't get to "welfare". We need a new low cost, efficient, green fuel to run our gas and oil hot water and heating boilers soon. Once that is developed and rolled out to the 25 million domestic properties in this country, then we can stop using gas and oil as fuel. Why isnt the government doing something about this, rather than allowing the manufacture and sale of gas and oil fuelled boilers until 2035. At least 12 more years of fossil fuel pollution from oil and gas boilers from millions of houses and small buildings across the country. No wonder the tories are exploring for new gas and oil - Theyve known this all along. This government needs to set out a strategised, low cost transition for the domestic and small building sector cos 12 more years at least of using fossil fuels at the ridiculous prices they charge is too long and killing peoples pockets.
It's ridiculous that they're debating money that is 'owed' by a citizen's protest group to the police - I'm sure they'd rather be policing real criminals - when the science is clear that our actions are causing climate failure - millions of people being displaced, going hungry, suffering quality of life, losing their homes, their loved ones, their livelihood. As I'm typing this right now 18 people have died in South India due to a cyclone, thousands displaced and lacking access to basic necessities. Extreme weather events have increased 3 fold over the last decade due to global warming. People who aren't effected or who don't care bury their heads because they think their privilege will save them.
Thanks Zoe for your extreme patience with this crowd. Where do they find them. If they represent the great British public, heaven help all thinking and intelligent people. The level of interview and so called debate from channel 5 is abysmal.

So if you are not happy why don't talk to the government and mps in the house of commons. Not normal people on roads! I want to just stop you just stop oil. I agree we need to cut to net zero but not like this!
Only a fool would question the current need for oil/gas/coal but we need to get serious about TRANSITION. Time to wind down the fossil-fuels as sustainable energy sources (solar, wind, hydro/tide, GEOTHERMAL) take up the demand. There is no economic/business imperative to embark on exploring/developing new fossil fuel resources. We have enough of it.
Actually, it is down to the government to make electric cars affordable to the poorest people in society. If the eventual ban on petrol cars makes cars more expensive then that is a failure of the government, not a failure necessity of stopping the sale of new petrol cars. To argue that oil should be cheap is not only ridiculous, it undermines the idea that a government is responsible to look after the poorest citizens by actually helping them, rather than by giving up on important policies.
It's not your right to have your demands met. Saying 'the government didn't give us exactly what we want, in the manner in which we want it' does not justify infringing on the rights of others. Hardly surprising that this loon has green hair. This lot don't have an original idea between them.
