  • Game Designer Adam Porter explores the mechanisms used in racing board games. The video is a toolbox for you as a designer: an exploration and distillation of what has gone before - how a mechanism has developed - lessons learned and new avenues to explore. Take these mechanisms, combine them, subvert them, and create something new.

    Great video!
    If I may, I would add 4 additional racing games that may be worth considering, even though they are quite old:
    - Elefantenparade : basicaly leapfrogging, the boardgame. Each player has 2 elephants, but has to move 3 at their turn, mostly by leapfrogging. There are pitfalls (rivers), and intermediate objectives.
    - Hare and Tortoise : here, the players choose to spend carrots to go forward (in triangular number), or go backwards to earn carrots. There are mandatory pit-stops (lettuces to eat), and in order to pass the finish line, the amount of carrots a player can own is very limited. There are some catch-back mechanisms
    -Turfmaster : a simple but elegant horse race. The lane changes are quite limited, the leaders are quite hampered in their speed, and the game is quite fast-paced and tactical.
    - And, of course, backgammon.

    Thanks for the video. I have a prototype for a rollercoaster game and, although not technically a racing game and would be excluded using your criteria, I did get some inspiration for some rules tweaks. Thanks for the coverage and especially enjoyed the transitions from one game concept to the next within the same game to make it flow better.

    One example of a weird racing game (well, it is a racing game for me) is Freese's Fast Sloths. It is similar to Powerboats in the sense you don't have a set track. You need to visit 8 locations, in any order.

    Excellent as usual Mr. Wales, I have tried my hand at making a few videos and even tho I'm just doing a voice over a clip, man, it is a lot of work. Your videos are so well produced and edited, I can only imagine what goes into each one, great job!. You should think about kickstarting your Stratego game, its a risk but maybe you could have some sort of survey to see interest?

    Great video and its given me stuff to think about with regards to my design. Also wanted to throw out there 'First Past The Post' as it was known here in the UK or Lose your shirt, as it is also known. Was a horse racing game with card movment and you had to take a card from your hand at the start of the race to place face down, as your 'bet upon horse'.

    very good video! and love the series. you have missed my favorite racing game though. Speed Circuit, or CFR is the newer edition. its another game that doesnt use dice rolls or cards for speed. you build a car with limitations like acceleration and each turn you simply decide what speed you want to go within your parameters. there is a die, used only when you want push your vehicle. this is a very old game that uses the player in first goes first mechanic.

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Speed Circuit does look very similar to the Waddingtons Formula 1 game - perhaps it was an evolution of that system?

    • @marcbennett9232
      @marcbennett9232 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AdaminWales I haven't played formula 1 so I'm not sure on that, it may be. Maybe it inspired this. Although in speed circuit there is no dashboard, you just write things down on a pad including creating your car. The newer version CFR uses cards just to keep track of current speed and what your car load out is.

    in Heat the "weather condition" token doesn't apply for the whole track, just for the parts of track that have weather token drawn. So if you don't draw weather tokens for any part of the track weather doesn't apply anywhere, and from the main weather token only starting cards modifiers apply. I've checked this several times during our playthroughs since it seems really weird - but that's how it is in rules.

    • @mr_cysio
      @mr_cysio หลายเดือนก่อน

      I nit-pick here specifically because from the design point of view it seems like an odd choice and I still don't get it why it's done like that. I love Heat design overall, though.

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      TH-cam selects the most appropriate definition for each video - for a video like this, I use a number of clips and images from publishers’ promotional materials. So I would imagine that some of those were lower quality and reduced the definition of the video as a whole.

      I agree with you. “Action” games really need to get out the way of themselves - heavy rulesets tend to slow a game down and dissipate tension. Dexterity works well in action games - Pitch Car is a good example on this list.
