    ABOUT THIS VLOG:
➡ Cascais, Portugal, has for many years been a popular tourist destination for sunshine hungry people. Cascais actually became popular before Lisbon, which is why Cascais is a very polished area that today is where the rich and famous live in their huge mansions.
Cascais has a lot to offer so it can be hard to know where to start.
What we did was to explore the best and most popular things to do which includes the old town of Cascais, Boca do Inferno, Guincho Beach and Cabo da Roca.
The old town of Cascais is super charming and a great place to relax and just enjoy life. There are a lot of tourists traps, but if you do your research you will be just fine. This is also a place where you can shop til you drop although the selection isn't overly impressive.
A short drive from Cascais Old Town is Boca do Interno, which is a beach front cliff area with magnificent views and nice restaurants. It's a wonderful place to come a unwind and just enjoy the waves coming in. And speaking of waves Guincho Beach is an obvious must-visit. This is the go-to beach of Cascais, where surfers, tanners, tourists and locals mix together in a good blend without causing too much traffic. The beautiful beach is surrounded by plenty of restaurants and hotels including Fortaleza do Guincho, which has a 1-star Michelin restaurant that is worth visiting.
Finally, visiting Cabo da Roca is great way to end the day and enjoy the sunset. This is the most western point of continental Europe, which is also why lots of tourists flock to the place. There are a lot of tourists, which is a drawback, but you can't beat that view. It's just incredible!
    NEW HERE?
    -
We're Amalie and Joen. A Danish couple from Copenhagen who have moved to Lisbon, Portugal.
This vlog is all about showing our new home, how life in Portugal is and of course a bunch of epic adventures around this beautiful country.
We hope you'll stick around. :-)

      fun fact:
Casino Estoril in Cascais inspired Ian Fleming to write Casino Royal..during WW2 , Portugal was neutral, so Lisbon became the center of espionage during the war, in which British and German spies mingled at the Casino...

    Interesting facts about Cascais area:
    - Biggest casino in Europe
    - During WW2 it was a spy hub from both axis and allied forces as Portugal was neutral during the war
    - The Italian, Spanish, Romanian Royal Families were exiled in Cascais for years
    - Ian Fleming creator of James Bond was a spy during WW2 in this area and he wrote Casino Royale while based here. The first Casino Royale was shot in part in Estoril and Guincho beach
    - It is originally a fishing town and by the end 19th century became hotspot for aristocrats and wealthy people, still keeping its charm and its fishing activities being one of the biggest fish markets in Portugal
    - It celebrated 650 years as a town couple years ago
    - It's one of europe's best sailing destinations having hosted America's Cup arguably the F1 of sailing; also the ISAF world sailing championship and others
    - It hosts one of the best horseriding championships in the world, the Longines Global Champions Tour for 13 years now
    - It host the European Tour Golf Portugal Masters
    - It has one of the most mythical race tracks where there used to be F1 and Moto GP - bikes are returning next couple years its under negotiation
    - Major surfing and kite surfing destination
Probably more but that's it for now : )

    Fun facts:
    1. James Bond first book, Casino Royal, was written...in Cascais (so Casino Royal is based..in Casino Estoril).
    2. Cascais was famous for having/living there ''more kings then 5 Star hotels" (examples: Edward VIII (UK) + Juan Carlos (Spain) + Umberto (Italy) + Carol (Romania), etc)

    • @pixelised
      @pixelised 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yeah, I thought it showed they didn't do their homework by saying Cascais isn't super interesting when there's actually so much more than what meets the eye (charming as it might be). It could have just been a pretty former fishermen town but became much more than that… Loads of stories which could have been told and almost mandatory places they didn't visit/show made this vlog a bit underwhelming.

I went to Cascais twice in my 3 months in Portugal. It’s a beautiful town. The first time was on a whim, with my Step-Mother after we dropped my daughter off at the airport. She has friends who had told her about it... and among her friends it’s known as the Portuguese Riviera.
Love that guitar player... big happy smiles!
The area was teaming with spies during WWII and did you know that the former King of England and is wife, Wallis Simpson moved there? And, Sir Ian Fleming was inspired by the Palácio in Estoril and it’s really the birth place of James Bond. Fascinating history!

if for you having a soul means being a poor city than maybe yes Lisbon was a poor city in the 90's from your perspective, but Lisbon was wild and untamed back then (watch Wim Wenders "Lisbon story" although I do think you will not like it and call it poor), nowadays is just becoming a big soulless city that has been swallowed by hordes of tourists.

GUYS: You skipped the nicest things about Cascais, that was really poor sorry..... As foodies, you were supposed to have something in the marina (or sail even) or other lovely restaurants, Santini, visit the fortress for art galleries or painters' house Casa das Histórias (Paula Rego) and Museu Condes Castro de Guimares , the sea museum or Cascais cultural centre or something. Also gardens, several old palaces, restaurants and a sushi hotel Casa da Guia over the sea worth visiting. You also missed heavily on the History part. Do something about Hotel Palácio in Estoril and the Casino or places to stay like luxury airbnb's or hotels, since you say you love luxury so much...

But there's also the non touristy part of Cascais and that includes the historic neighborhood (not where you said it was, it's a little inland), Quinta do pisão (pick your own organic vegetables), cut through the beautiful park near the marina (Marechal Carmona) and walk on the dunes near praia do guincho. And you can explore tiny towns on the way to Cabo de Roca, like Ulgueira. Just more suggestions for another day trip. :)

Congratulations on your Vlog which I follow with great joy, however I must say this video about Cascais is the poorest I have seen. Maybe it’s because i live near and I know the gems you were looking for and didn’t showed. You’ve just pin pointed the spots where all the tourists go. I really really really like your Vlog 😉 but being a Cascais local I had to say it. Feel free to speak to me if you want to know some hidden gems in Cascais. Enjoy 🇵🇹 and thank you for showing our ( yours too ) country.

Jon and Amelie, you are a such a cute and beautiful couple you seem to have a such a sweet playful relationship. I know Amelie wants you to propose to her, and you day you are not for the institution of marriage, but it's not really about that to most women. An engagement is and marriage is like a vow of commitment through sickness and health and happiness and sadness, a bow to spend the rest of your lives together. A wedding does not have to be over the top and it can happen some years later after engagement. My advice to you is just to do for your sweetheart Amelie, know as a women how important that vow is and the ring is just a symbol of that vow and commitment to each other. She already knows you love her I'm sure buy that official commitment will make her live you even more! Just do it for her💕💝💖😍 I really admire your relationship, its so sweet to watch.

Ads, ads, ads. You have a fun, energetic attitude, guys, yet we could do with a little less guitar and a little more on the Largo do Camoes, Viscont de Luz, train station, the real Mercado. But are you really making enough money from the annoying ads?

Boca do inferno it means mouth of the hell.
Is there a fantastic restaurant and much more about Cascais.
Some people had died there, they got to close to the waves and disappeared under the caves.
Them bodies had being found days later.😢

In guincho you don't read the 'u' as it is silent
As to cabo da rocha when there is a 'c' followed by an 'h' you read it like the shhh sound in shut
    So its more like rosha

Another great vlog! Super relaxing too! But I must saw that a part two could exist ;) Rua direita and other little streets could be featured (really pretty houses), Santini icecreams (1st ever santini shop in Portugal) , images of the baia de cascais, praia da rainha, parque marchel carmona (beautiful city park), cidadela de cascais, Museu Condes Castro de Guimares (stunning fairytale building), casa das Histórias (cool building -Paula Rego is a well knowed Portuguese artist), marina de cascais and the guincho road is a super scenic road (maybe you guys could cycle along there - they rent bikes along there. Also casa da guia has nice cafes (pricey) and super nice view. beijinhosss

"Lisbon was just some poor city in the 90's"!! LOL Most random snobbish northern european comment ever.... Cascais has been upper class for decades and Lisbon started the 90's as Europe's cultural capital and large extensions of the city were renovated to host Expo of the Oceans!! Basically all the area of Parque das Nações and more were built by then!

@@jetstar1972 Personally I would not stand him for 24h, but that's just how mediterranean girls roll (I've had nordic boyfriends thanks, I know that mild comments like that one hide a lot of hypocrisy and sometimes even racism - you saw how he treated her when sparkling water run out?)...besides Cascais was never a poor city, not even when his parents were around, it has been a snobbish upper class one for decades now.
