I've lived on Netherlands (6 years), Scotland (1 year), England(1 year), France (3 months) and Germany (2 months) ...maybe its a "BIAS thinking" but Portugal wins to all in several aspects, the most important in life!
      Like:
Food..from fresh-fish to salted-cod, veggies that grow without lots of chemicals...wines, several sorts and lots of culture about it... weather and beaches... hospitality has a quality-money-ratio better than 80-90% of Europe... we have also the islands, must see those pearls!
Yes, some people (40-50%) are stupid, rude, ignorant or less-educated ...still, if you are smart you do avoid many problems, just don't insist when someone is rude, avoid them if you can... you still have the other 50% that are good and reliable people, most like in many cultures there are good and bad people, or greedy, or thieves...
About safety: I do find that crime-rates are going up and the severeness of many crimes is going up...maybe like the rest of the World!
What I saw in The Netherlands about 20 years ago, now its happening here. Portugal is a peaceful country but some culture that came from outside in is damaging and young-people are looking to be the "next Ronaldo" or a gangster-rapper. Its also happening thru Europe and World.
There was a cultural-shock between generations. We were very closed and directed to the colonies, we were very poor. Few debt but no development.
From the Revolution in the 70's (25th April)...then in the 80's the opening to Europe (E.U). and now the people that were babies and children on those days, now they are having more impact.
      About financing and jobs:
you are right about here we do not input many limits to any foreigner, like many countries that are more rich than us. I did felt limited in the Netherlands since they opened the E.U. borders to Poland and others.
If you can learn the language, better...if not, you can find jobs that do speak English in the technology, hospitality, medicine,etc... be a good professional and you will have all doors open.
Many things to say but...each one has their own view and experience. What is good for me, hard or easy... that is just each one views.
      Must check this places:
-Porto Côvo, in Costa Vicentina. Food and beach, wine and parties... a bit over-packed in high-season due to this sort of publicity! ...still, one of my favourites.
-Odeceixe, in Costa Vicentina-Algarve. If you asked me wish is the most beautiful place in Portugal in a summer-day...or night...its Odeceixe. With a camping-park that has bungalows, near the river that flows to sea. Good people, they speak English. A hidden pearl!
-Cabo de Sagres, in Algarve. Just for the view, maybe some pictures of one of the Algarve's most iconic places.
-Tavira and Ilha de Tavira, in Algarve. Its a small village that over-packs in high-season. Much better in a nice calm day, with time. Lots of restaurants by the sea. Check also the country-side. If you look and like alternative-medicine and relax, visit Monte Mariposa near Tavira. You can book a room just for sleep, can book a experience/session/event in Alternative and Holistic Medicines.
-Barragem do Alqueva, in Alentejo. Its a damn, the biggest in Europe or one of the biggest. Some water-sports, camping, etc... This region has several Local Tourism Posts and Accommodation that give information about cultural events, local history, etc...
-Natural Park "Peneda Gerês", in the North, near Spain. A bit destroyed by fires, still amazing with many special spots like lagoons and water-springs.
      ...and much more :)
      So, welcome to Portugal :)

The English have the following saying. When in Rome do what the Romans do.
Basically go with the flow of the local culture.
    1. Use the same address as used on your Electric/ Water bills. Works fine for me, and I live in the back of beyond.
    2. If you live in a built up area with lack of parking anywhere getting stuff delivered is a problem.
    3. In every Portuguese driver is a formula 1 racing driver trying to get out.
    4. Most people in Western Europe suffer from stress on a today, today basis , and a large percentage of mental illness. Due to Portuguese attitude to life, Portugal has one of the lowest mental illness rates in Europe.
When in Portugal do as the Portuguese do, and you will be fine.

But I guess I have a slightly different mentally than most Portuguese folk.

"go with the flow of the local culture."
But it's that attitude is what's killing the country. The world is moving on and Portugal is dying! And as Anton Kreil says: "People don't understand that in the global company, if you're not competitive, you die!" th-cam.com/video/kDJ09pO8s0k/w-d-xo.html
I understand that Portugal has some foreign investment, and all at the tragic cost to the locals. However, IMO, Portugal is fast the ghetto of Europe. The public services are diabolical, there's little to nothing the government is doing … expect to sell to foreign investors … no doubt for kickbacks somewhere along the line.
There's only so much fish, custard tarts and a nice coastline can do. Bad services will drive any person with real money away … to the likes of Dubai, Singapore or worse still, the U.S. What does Portugal have?

As for the dents on the car, you just have a "a hole" parked on your side because I have no dents on mine and it's parked outside for almost 4 years.
To deal with the portuguese bureaucracy you just need 2 things to be polite and have a humble and pleasant smile, portuguese people will go all out of their way to help someone that they "like" even if they don't know you. Well you can occasionally find some bad people that don't care.
Next time try to smile and tell them first thing that you don't know anything and really need their help

    • @pvfsm
      @pvfsm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I would advice to start with a smile but when they don't do nothing about it, then get angry and demand them to act, and don't accept a "No", or "maybe next friday" as an answer.

    • @madsdgdhg
      @madsdgdhg 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The problem is, there's a lot of "a hole"s around with no respect for others property. And this means parking to close for no reason, blocking your car, or opening doors with no care causing dents. That dents can easily happen on a public car park or shopping car park. Unless you are picky where you park, and this means you have to be constantly worrying where to leave the car.

"Don't want to come across as negative people..."
Do it. If you want to inform people, it comes with negative impressions as well. I am portuguese and always show and tell first foreigners about what unpleasant experiences they are likely to have here. This way they are prepared and will come less as a shock.
I do have to say about how long things take to get done around here...the main reason is not a cultural thing of laziness. While it's true that portuguese do privilege a more relaxing lifestyle than other european countries, they are simply not enough job incentives for you to give your hardest. Productivity is low if you feel that your employer pays too little, have crap workplace conditions and zero care about your well being. So things are expected to take its time mainly due to that, which is not a nag at you, but I often find out that people that come from richest countries have little understanding of. Somehow believing the stereotype that people are lazy is a good enough reason.

    • @Apilif91
      @Apilif91 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

trailoffiends I just wrote o paper on the Portuguese economy and referenced this exactly. Wages have stayed flat in Portugal while rich people have gotten richer. This generates unproductive workforce that is unmotivated since there is no real reward for hardwork. Career advancements were frozen for years and we are only now getting on our feet. Hopefully we continue to invest in technology and fight corruption and nepotism.

    • @annamoura21
      @annamoura21 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@hypnotechno If it's stuff that you're gonna have to pay import taxes on, you should always use a courier service like FedEx or UPS. You pay a premium for that, but they handle everything for you, and trust me, it's well worth it! For cheap stuff, regular mail is just fine. I buy cheap crap from China all the time and never had any issues with customs/CTT. I also never seen a shop closed when it should be open. Not saying it never happened, but it's not a thing. Definitely not a thing!
If the address is wrong you can't expect the package to be delivered... and when it doesn't get delivered, don't blame it on the postal services, blame the sender who misspelled the address. If you're in a rural area where you've probably lived your whole life and where the mailman has been the same guy for many years it will most likely still get delivered... in a city like Lisbon? No chance! And for good reason.
I've had good and bad experiences pretty much everywhere. No service is perfect. That said, overall, I think the postal services work fairly well... and no, I don't work at CTT and don't even know anyone who ever worked there on personal level. I'm just talking from my 30+ years of experience with them.

The things you complain about are the things we also complain about every day: the maddening bureaucracy, the lack of civility of the drivers, the bad paying jobs, the lack of a good working culture... all of that can be really challenging for a foreigner, especially when you are coming from a more developed country such as Denmark. The good things are what you mentioned: the weather, the people, the food and wine, the amazing landscapes, the festivals... I really hope for you the pros keep outhweighting the cons. You seem such a nice couple and your videos are awesome. Please, if you manage to deal with our flaws stay with us for a long time! And, because aparrently you have a nice financial stability, you don't face SEVERAL other problems that a lot of portuguese face.
As to the worker's "flexibility", try to live a very moderate lifestyle with the same wage they do and you'll see that your flexibility will all be spent trying to survive until the end of the month.
Prices in Portugal are going crazy, just compare the prices with other European countries versus the wages. It's a miracle that people get out of the bed everyday to work so they can pay their rent and electricity bills.

It is easy to take advance of lower income countries to spend some holidays... It is what they call cheap heaven. Try to do the same in Denmark while working in a minimal wage and then you'll get the picture, it won't be that different. You get the point.
If you live as a couple in denmark, sweden, uk, france, germany, luxembourg, switzerland your life will be easier, you will be able to afford high end smartphones, computers, clothing, food, etc.. while in portugal you will probably get low end smartphone, old car, lowest quality services, cheap clothing, cheap groceries, no money for dentist, etc.. and on top of that, EURO coin created some kind of pricing standards all around europe for certain goods. I pay for some goods in Portugal the same I would pay in Germany... so if Germans earn more $, this means they can can save some $ in groceries, diesel and usually better health services. Unfortunately, this happens worldwide.. (I don't park parallel to cars that have 'Baby On Board" signs or children's car seats; Scuffs Guaranteed)
But if you think this is happening or has happened in your own private car-park; then I suggest you speak to your building's manager because to anyone in the world; "This is unacceptable !" Tip;, take pictures regularly of your car's exterior, in case you need proof that those dents weren't there 'the night before' - you know the drill.
And for the Postal Services in Portugal; The address was wrong !!, How do expect them to give info if they cannot get to you?. I think they were actually really good sending it back so promptly to its sender so they could rectify the address and send it back to your correct address.

      Nope, completely disagree.
When I started working I already knew I was going to compete with people who already had their job there more secured than me. Basically I became competitive with them myself.
I started as a part-time, then became full-time. Started with contract, then became fully employed. Started earning very little, now I earn a lot more and I've earned a few prizes for best employee. Been there for 20 years now and I seriously doubt any boss in the world has interest in sending good employees away. I'm a manager now.
I've always arrived some 5 minutes early and worked some extra time everyday before leaving, my rythm/pace was more accelerated than others, I was always available to work on my days off, I never complained about heavier work, I always tried to learn new tasks and did them better than others (not my words), I hardly ever talked with coleagues while working and when I did it was about the work itself. I know I seem arrogant but I'm not lying. Can you imagine anyone in their late teens, early twenties doing the same thing today, or even back then?
And have you seen how young employees work today? They're ridiculous, lazy, pathetic, idiotic and unisterested. It's like they were born sleepy and unwilling to work BEFORE being rewarded.

There was a time I worked 4 hours for very little money and that only made me work "pretty harder and all". That's when I started to be given opportunities and I took them.
Alright then. What do you consider to be the right incentives to work since having money in your pocket for a house, car, independence, everything else, apparently isn't enough for you/anyone to sweat a little? Again, shouldn't you work first and then expect to be rewarded later accordingly? Isn't that the way it's always been? And don't you see a clear difference in mentality between older generations and the younger ones? The more you're used to have with no efford, the least efford you make to have it.

I also started in a poor family of 8 sharing a house with 2 bedrooms, only felt on my skin what is it to have hot pressurized water by the age of 10. I don't assume if other people had a tougher life than me, what matters is to make a comparison basis to other countries and check that low productivity is based on shit incentives.
Some people work hard with no rewards down the road. Some people do not comitt the effort to work hard when the contract is precarious and there are red flags about the employer. It's that simple, don't project your life unto others and think it will work just as fine.

Do you really need extra incentives and rights to work other than wage? Should you NOT work if you don't have such extras and just give up? What do you want?
If you're not aware of how poorly trained youngsters come out of school (mentally and even physically) to the job market, and if you're not aware that most of today's parents treat their kids as friends who shouldn't suffer disappointment in life, there's really no way for you to know the reality of the country. Ask anyone in charge of anything inside any companies here (and even a few other countries in Europe it seems). If the topic of conversation is about new employees, the opinion is absolutely unanimous because they all see it as well. One of our clients in France complained about the same and another in Spain lightly mentioned it as well. You don't have to take it from me or the " projection of my life unto others ", just ask anyone else I've mentioned (managers, bosses...) and they might even tell you their stories so you can see the pattern. The point of my personal example was to illustrate the difference in behaviour and attitude regarding work and also opportunity because it does happen sooner of later.
And it didn't work fine for me since it took me 23 years to be where I am. Some people make it as early as 8 elsewhere in my company and totally deserve it.

I loved driving in Portugal and I didn’t even mind driving in Lisboa. I worked more about not understanding all the signs (since most are not used in Canada). The primary highways are great, and so are the smaller ones without tolls. I’m an explorer and was in the car often and I usually used the roads that started with ‘N’ or IP.
As you know, my experience with the language, up in Atouguia, was quite different. Most people on the stores or cafes didn’t speak English so I got to practice a lot! It’s going to be a lot of work to get my conversational Portuguese up to par, but I will plug away at it.
The weather is a huge positive coming from here where the snow is finally starting to melt away.
I think if you are kind, thoughtful and patient most of the time you will get along fine. Oh, and I will be buying a little used hatch-back, so I bet it won’t catch as many scratches and dings. That is just Murphy’s Law.

I was quite upset with the girl from Instagram that said the cons of Portugal are "old school, traditional, stupid mentalities". Portugal owns a very large percentage of its tourists to the fact that the country is "old school", it's the feeling of freedom and safety that comes with the "old school" that attracts tourism as well as the "traditional" part. If it wasn't for the traditional portuguese food or even the traditional education Portuguese people get while growing the country wouldn't gain the attention it has. Finally, and what got me the most was the "stupid mentalities" part, it doesn't matter if you're a local or just visiting, saying something like that isn't very kind. Especially to people who try their best to make you feel welcome. Old portuguese people (and even some teens) may have a closed mind but overall portuguese people shouldn't have to deal with people telling them their mentalities are "stupid". Because if it was to be like that locals wouldn't give a shit about tourists and they for sure wouldn't try to help as best as they can. Portuguese people are probably one of the kindest natives you'll find around the world so please, have a little respect. One thing is saying people are close minded, other is calling them stupid.

There's there a slight sense of superiority thats rude. Arthur, I wonder if it also depends on what part of Portugal you live in... whether it’s a small town or the big city. If you live in a place that everyone knows who you are, then the people delivering the packages 📦 might be able to discern that “the address isn’t exactly right, but I know where that family lives.” In the bigger, busier cities it might be much harder, especially if the apt # is missing.
That being said, Amalie did say they had a tracking number no there was likely a phone number too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@JenShea Yes, I'm really convinced it depends on where you live. But it's not about people knowing who you are, it's about people being willing to walk the extra mile and to think, instead of blindly following the rules. That postman was probably just strictly following rules, he didn't pause to think because he just doesn't care, the big city made him numb.

    Hey,
Sorry to say but it is cheap to live here if you come with the salary from Denmark for example, but the salary in Portugal does not make our living cheap at all, for example in Lisbon you don't usually find places to live that costs less than 750€(talking only about the appartment) and the minimum wage in here is 600€ and usually what the majority of us receive is like 600€ clean what makes it completly impossible to make a life alone. You need to be with someone and even like that the dificulties are huge for the couple or friends.. So I'm sorry but that is not a "pro" for the Portuguese people. You go eat at a restaurant one day and you're screwed for the rest of the month doing some magic to survive(even if you don't go out you need to do some magic to survive).

Hi guys, first of all, burocracy... Yes, some services are really bad and slow, the trick is pressure and don't be nice and understanding to them, or else you always will be the last one to be served. I live in Ireland and it's funny how things are relative, here I miss the Portuguese services (so imagine how bad these ones are). About the flights, any flight in Europe depends on competition. Check how many companies do the route you want and if the intention is low price check the same route but through London (any airport). I'm guessing you will find that through London the flight becomes super cheap.

  • @Tripaslx

Well I guess when you move elsewhere we all have this tendency to compare with what we are used to. When it comes out of our comfort zone it's easier to point fingers. I'm not criticizing in anyway. It's nice to get to know a different perspective that from the one we take as granted. I'm portuguese and I've been living mainly all my life in Portugal. I've spent 20 years in Porto and now in Lisboa for 20 years. I mean there's some differences but not that many. The burocracy overall in Portugal is something that really drives me crazy but we it has come long ways. Believe me in the 1980 and 1990's it was much worst. As for what you said that in general Portuguese people have some difficulties to get out of the comfort zone and go around the problems to solve them I don't agree with you that much. In fact there's a word in portuguese - "desenrascar" that it just fits like a glove there. As a latin southern culture we tend to leave mainly everything for last minute. And that's when "desenrascanso" comes along and saves the day. And different solutions for the same problem are presented and resolved ;)
As a general balance if I were not living here already I would think seriously on moving here. But hey keep it a secret otherwise all the good things of living in Portugal will be gone in no time.
Enjoy the weather, the wine and the food. And ok the people too. Of course we have assholes (a lot of them) like any where else but that's life.
By the way I love Copenhagen and the people there
    Cheers

@@joenandamalie My point is: Pretty much as you guys I live abroad, and obviously every country I'm in it's always so hard to take care of anything , including bureaucracy. The reason why I'm saying this is because I'm living outside of Portugal for the last 5 years and yes after all this experience I believe that Portugal is way ahead of most European countries. For you it will be always frustrating because in the end your not in your country, so things will always be a "tiny" bit harder than in Denmark. I have been told in different countries that Portugal does not belong to the European Union, so believe me the struggle there is minimal compared to a lot of countries in Europe, especially the Eastern Europe ones, which is where I'm located now.

Let me tell you something that could help you from now on. You are spot on in everything, But there is something you still don't realize. Portugal have a lot of burucracy? Servers never know how to agilize processes? Portuguese are lazy? It appears that all is true, But it isn't. Nowadays burucracy is easy and fast. And portuguese are really good at thinking outside the box. It's even our biggest achievement as a culture. Desenrascar is the thing we are best at. But portuguese are really really really lazy. Most of the time servers (public and private) don't help, make problems, and say "try go to (somewhere else) just to " pass the ball", someone else to do the work. And it really is nerve breaking. It's not magic, But it really helps: be nice, But if someone looks like they don't are doing the job they should do, don't be afraid of ask for the reclamation book. See how fast they solve your problem. But be sure what you want to write. Most of the complains is about the server being unpolite, and that isn't a valid complain. Be sure to write (or want to write, because most of the time they solve the problem and you don't need to write) something that really works bad. And if possible, in public services, try to speak with younger people. Old public servers are way to far gone in lazyness. They are completly useless.
