People forget so easily: a majority of these soldiers were KIDS...18 and 19 year olds who had never left home prior to this.
Everytime you hear, "MOM" or "MOMMA" you gotta imagine that happened a LOT...in real life. The thought brings me to tears every time I think about it. And this movie beautifully reminds us many times.
This is one of the many reasons that I always have, and always will, sincerely thank our veterans

For all the realistic horror on Omaha Beach, this is the moment from this film that I have never forgotten. It has stayed with me all these years. It is one of the quietest moments in a very loud movie, and I cannot believe that you were able to find it. Thank you.

I love this movie but admit, I'd forgotten about these two Ribisi scenes until the first few seconds of this video reminded me of him talking about his mother. Instantly i remembered this monologue, but then more powerfully, his last cries for mama echoed in my memory. The same tone and repetition, the same desperation and confusion, the same raw instinctual cry out for a mother's safety - exactly how i could hear my own son waking up from a nightmare when only 5 years old - still had me break down into tears like the first time i saw it.

I agree, Spielberg's masterful character development is a huge part of what makes the film so unforgettable. For me, it's the initial meeting with Ryan that truly shows his character. He has a ticket out of the war but he refuses to go. He will not leave his brothers. While the scene of him recalling the last time he saw all of his brothers together is heartwarming and adds to the character development, I was already rooting for Ryan. He not only refuses to leave his brothers, Ryan asks for the names of the two soldiers that were killed in the process of finding him. These details, in such a short time, make the audience feel connected to him.

Great take on this! I would also add that the use of practical effects in this movie make it seem even more timeless and realistic. If this movie came out in 2024, it would be just as believable and visually amazing.

@@JayLaxer Yes totally agree! CGI ages, where as practical effects are timeless - good point 🙌🏽

One of my favorite lines is also the only time I can think of that Tom Hanks swears
"We're not here to do the decent thing we're here to follow the fucking orders"

Oh brother i absolutely remember this scene in the begining of this video. In my opinion thats some hardcore stuff right there. More than any hand grenades and SS officers

Thr only fault this film had was the Captain's last line, telling Ryan to "earn this!"
If he had said something along the lines of "This is not your fault. Promise me you'll always remember this was not your doing!"
It would make Ryan's framing visit to the graves even more impactful.
