Ivar Hafskjold the inheritor of the Stav tradition is performing the runic stances at Sörmlands Stavhov in Sweden. The stances are essential to Stav as both a form of meditation in movement, gymnastics as well as programing the body for the movement utilized in the Stav martial arts as well as correct breathing patterns. There are five varieties of the stances, once for each class.
The Stav runic stances have a lot of correlations with the Swedish gymnastics of Pehr Henrik Ling who spread throughout the world and heavily influenced both modern Japanese martial arts as well as modern yoga. Everything indicates that the Stav stances predates Ling´s gymnastics.
In the 1930´s the German mystic Marby revitalized “runic gymnastics” and he spent 5 years in Sweden and Denmark when doing his work, it is unclear what he based his teachings on. But the German runic gymnastics/yoga lacks a lot of the functionalities and deeper layers found within Hafskjolds Stav.
