    As a 63 old grandmother who took HomeEc in high school so I could learn to cook, bake, do laundry and keep house, I would SO do things differently today! Today I would take machine shop and automotive shop. 😊

    Good stuff Jesse. Yeah, it took me a little while to understand that the internal seals don't affect cylinder drift. It's not obvious at first, but that's definitely true.

      yea I learned it a few years ago and it was hard to accept at first but then I watched a few videos where they proved it. I guess people are saying that only applies to if the rod was pushed into the cylinder, under compression. Mine was pulling out of the cylinder which would create a vacuum, I still think it is the same concept though, but I could be wrong

      @@jmuller86 you're exactly right. Fluids don't compress or expand due to pressure. They do due to temperature, of course, but both sides would be experiencing the same temp.

    Thank you Jesse, another well explained project, easily understood by an old novice like me. Can't help but think you would make an excellent tutor in a school of engineering. You and 'Mustie', Darren, are much the same ilk. I took Engineering as my subject matter at High School mid 1950s. Sadly our tutor was very hard for me to follow, not that he was a poor instructor but he did have a speech impediment which created a misunderstanding of technical stuff for me. Consequently i did not become an engineer in my adult life, but did just about everything else one could think of including, Infantry Soldier, Highway Cop and several other occupations. All history now as my senior years go by much too fast for my liking. LoL. Bob.

    Thanks for showing us the inside of the cylinder. Usually we send them off to a shop, but prices have gone way up and I believe the next one I will be attempting to rebuild it myself. Seals are not expensive.

    Its even more than the learning on how to do stuff for yourself, the honesty that you come across with would make me very happy to buy a machine from you because of the honesty factor. they come broken and leave fixed or the person will know without a doubt that you have given the best effort to make it right. Farmcraft 101 is the same way using common sense to repair or make something. It is a common knowledge tho that common sense is not common anymore

    End caps vary a lot, in a machine shop, we make a spanner to fit whatever end cap we may encounter. Yours came off easier than most. Overall, great job.

    watching your video, I am asking my husband some questions about what you are doing and he is telling me as I am watching your video. Then looking at what you are describing as the small ball or single bearing?? and it kind of stuck in the corner of that one small part. amazing, how that little something can cause such an issue. Then I am watching you take the Cylinder apart and se the plastic seal that looks like spaghetti, and so, again I am asking my husband questions, why not have rubber seals?? he he told me, it has both, the rubber seals are too flexible and will not keep the cylinder from moving all over the inside, and thus the plastic seals stabilizes it more to keep the inner cylinder form moving all over. .correct?? Thank you for explaining everything and letting even someone like me understand it all better. Very much appreciate it, and all your time with this video, top notch with this and all your videos and why I am still here watching. In future, your sons as they grow up they will have all of them to watch and learn form as well. a lot of be proud of Jesse. again Thank you, and look forward to more house video's! get this roof on before Christmas.

    Nice job rebuilding that cylinder. Get a macro lenses for your camera for close up shots. They work great. Just practice with it first.

    Like your shows. The packing should be cuped. One way for out and the other way for in. If one packing is bad the fluid will bypass the other packing which is cupped the other way. Just incase you didn't know. In my work (Logging) 80% of the time if a cylinder won't hold, it is the piston packing. Very seldom is it the o ring in the center of the piston. Like watching you fix things.

    Usually hydraulic creep 9 out of 10 times is always from soft seals like O-rings getting hard or going square around ball checks holding valves. Another good step is to bleed the supply lines going up the boom to clean them out.

    14:22 Yes, with that piston seal setup, it will cause drift. It uses two U cup seals facing opposite ways. With that bad seal there, the oil can simply bypass through the other one since it won't really seal any oil coming from that direction.

      It will still seal with just one seal working. And you can take the seals right out and it will not drift. I have seen videos where they prove it

      @@jmuller86 Yes, but that theory only applies if the cylinder is in compression. Not extending like in this case. That's why it's drifting in the first place.

      @@pedrobatista4439 extending means the rod is pulling out. similar to when you dip a straw in a cup and put your finger over the top, and then pull up. except in a closed loop it cant pull that liquid out

      @@jmuller86 When the basket drifted, it was extending the rod, so the fluid inside was just bypassing both piston seals, one because it was trashed and the other because it's not mean to seal from that direction in the first place.
      Again, the theory that the cylinder can hold it self without piston seals, only applies if the cylinder is in compression, which wasn't the case here. In fact, that's exactly how single acting cylinders works and only have a rod seal and wiper.

    Amazon has a set of 3 various sized gland seal pliers for about $24 in case you're having "cylinder deja vu" and don't want to wrestle those inner seals again. There's probably a second leveling block at the base of the boom which allows fluid to flow between the supply lines in order to keep the basket level when you're booming up and down.

      dont they all use a master/slave cylinder combination? there will be another cylinder at the bottom that moves with the main boom and is sized to send the appropriate amount of oil upto the basket cylinder to continually level it, then theres solenoids and controls incase the system leaks and gets out of level, or if for some reason you wanted it to be off level, maybe working up a slope on a building thats plumb

    For a quick and dirty gland wrench, take a 15-18" adjustable wrench and drill two holes the same size as the holes in the gland nut then insert roll pins the stick out, adjust the wrench to fit the nut, Cheap and works well.

    When mounting a seal inside, use a roundnose plier and press the seal in a figure of eight.
    It goes in a lot easier and is less stressful for the seal instead of trying to pry it in with a sharp object.
    Other than that, good repair and best that you didn’t continue working with it. Be careful with working on heights, you want to grow old in that house, not get cripple building it.

    I guess I should explain that the fluid can go past the packing from one side if the cylinder to the other inside the cylinder. The metal shrinks when cold and expanded when hot I'm sure you know that maybe why it leaked when cold. You are also right about the leakage coming out the head or gland packing to drip.

    Nice job on the rebuild, can't believe how brittle those seals were. I don't disagree about the safety blocks preventing the cylinder from moving however if I am understanding your comment about the rod not being able to move if the piston seals were removed I will have to disagree. While it is true that you would have a sealed amount of fluid in the piston, without the seals the metal part of the piston (which doesn't touch the housing) could slide back and forth freely as the fluid flowed past it.

      That's what I was thinking... without the seals on the piston the fluid from one side would transfer to the other ... so you wouldn't be compressing fluid. I would think the piston seals are exactly what would cause it to drift.... instead of sealing the fluid properly in each side of the piston the fluid could leak by and allow the piston to move

      After thinking further I now get it..... the piston couldn't push in because you are technically adding metal mass of the rod into a sealed chamber... so it would have to compress the fluid to compensate for that added mass... same thing with coming out it would have to expand under vacuum the fluid to allow the rod to exit as it would remove volume. Crazy to think about but yes Jesse you are right.

      @@KenMrKLC without the seals on the piston there is no compression of any fluid ( or very little), the rod would just be floating in a tube of hydraulic fluid. If the seals were blown the weight of the basket would pull on the the piston allowing the fluid to travel to the flat side of the piston and with the greater surface area allow the piston to move outward. It would be much more difficult for the piston to overcome the pressure the other way as the rod takes up a large volume.

Now on the whole extension vacuum theory I don’t know I guess I can see it pulling a little but going back to it’s position when no force pulling. Sure maybe it can pull out a little but I can’t imagine it staying out unless it had constant pressure pulling. And like I said it would return to where it was when you stop pulling

    in this case the position of the piston is determined by the volume of oil inside the cylinder, oil is incompressible if it cannot go up the pipes or out of the end seal, it's fixed in position, but the seals on the piston allow forces to be applied in both directions, without the piston seal applying oil pressure on either pipe would cause the cylinder to lengthen it's stroke,

    If you want to get the seals more flexible next time leave them in hot water before mounting, in our shop we have a dedicated water heater pot just for hydraulic seals, sometimes a little heat is all it takes to get a really stiff seal on a piston.

    11/27/22. Aerial boom lift...> unsafe < basket 'creep' tilt = hydraulic seal leak = today's video 'how to' analyze, disassemble, super clean & replace all (multi-shape ['o' ring, Chevron, & 'L'] engineered profile) seals... But big dissapointment!..🤔😮‍💨...no little kids 'drifting' into camera view!! ..ya know..grabbing those Shiney wrenches !..holding them for daddy..come on Jesse, just because they are only 3 years old, is no reason to withhold their vocational 'classroom' training! LoL!!🤣

    Hercules hydraulic in Florida has all seals packing for anything.
    Match by size or part number.

    unless I missed it, you didn't mention the second cylinder which is used to keep the basket straight automatically when you raise or lower the arm. it too could leak and be full of residue too. and as others have told you, without seals on the piston the cylinder cannot be retracted if it is full of oil and the two pipes closed, but it can be taken out.

    Jesse, I was wondering as you went through the operation explanation if it would have been possible to connect the supply and return lines for that cylinder together without the cylinder and just circulate fluid until you were comfortable that it had gotten all the fluid through the hydraulic filter. Might not be 100%, but should get any of the bigger pieces out without damaging any more seals?? Thanks for taking us through the operation, I always wondered how the safety worked on those units.       I was thinking that the supply oil from the tank should already be filtered and the oil in the return line will go to tank and be filtered so it wasn’t really worth worrying about, he got the main debris out so should be good right🤷‍♂️

    I think I'd try to rotate the end pin - you are getting it now. Is that cylinder thread lock tight to seal it to help hide dripping ?

    That little piece of seal material at 9:00 is indicative of what Teflon tape can do to a hydraulic system. A thread sealing compound specifically formulated for all types of fluid, such as Loctite 545, should be used on all threaded connections. Never Teflon tape.

    Don't forget these self leveling baskets also have a cylinder in the bottom set up as master/slave. Leaks in either cylinder could cause drift. also a leak in the control valve could cause it.

    You could use one of your skid steer’s to keep that arm from swinging and that would make your hits hit harder

    Hi Jesse. Did this end up fixing the problem long term? I'm having trouble with cylinder drift on my crane but only in cold weather. Same as you. Just wondering if the problem was in the counterbalance valve rather than the bad seals. Thanks man. Good video.

      This was the seals that were bad. I cant remember if I mentioned it in the video but the cylinder was leaking out of the rod end, so that was the issue. It definitely wasnt the piston seals

    You should consider a beefy air hammer. You'll slid those pins out almost instantly.
