On location with 'Simon & Simon' in 1986 at Santa Fe Depot and Balboa Park in San Diego

Though set in San Diego, the CBS detective series “Simon & Simon” didn’t always film here. But when they did make the trip south of Hollywood in 1986 to film scenes for two episodes, News 8 was there to scope out the action, and lead actors Gerald McRaney and Jameson Parker, at the Santa Fe Depot downtown. In part one of two, reporter Lorraine Kimmel spoke to locals - one who studied acting and another who was a self-described “San Diego housewife” - who got to be extras on the shoot about the excitement and the funny outfits. In the second piece, during filming at Balboa Park, Lorraine got to ask one of the show’s stars Gerald McRaney himself what question he liked to be asked.

I was WILDLY crazy about SIMON & SIMON. In 1988 my best friend and I went to San Diego, mostly a SIMONQUEST. We went places that were in different episodes. Of course, A CASE OF DON DIABLO had so many SD sites in it. The Santa Fe Depot was a favorite of ours. It was so beautiful inside.

My favorite show of the 80's, never missed it. Want to go back in time and watch this show all over again for the first time. Great cast and writing.

The show filmed in San Diego alot more than most people think.
I moved to San Diego winter, 1987, I worked at the wWestgate Hotel And actually saw a lot of celebrities come through there.
Other television shows filmed in SD as well, So actually got to see all types of filming for different films & shows!
I even got to play extra and About 10 films including... HEIST with Pierce Brosnan and Tom Skerrittt...Silk Stalkings with Mitzi Kapture and Rob Estes... And the last film and which I had the privilege to play an extra was Titanic , 1997

The whole first season was shot here. Then they did most of it in L.A. and only came down for special scenes to make it look legit.
