'they've got a wall in china, it's a thousand miles long, to keep out the foreigners they made it strong...and i've got a wall around me, that you can't even see..it took a little time to get next to me"/ with so much "music" these days that is just noise, this musical poetry will stand the test of time for a thousand years. Thank you Paul Simon. When you couple that with the guitar work and the simple delivery it is magic in a bottle. Nothing else like it, effortless, as good as it gets. 40 years ago he sang it and I remember the phrase from memory, and I am 70 years old. Nothing compares.
I am 73 years old and, during a power failure, I took my Annie Lennox CD and played it on my portable CD player. She chose this song and sang it so well. I had to come and get it from Paul himself. Have always loved this song. Yes, the lyrics are brilliant. I have spent years building walls around my heart and I never thought I would hear these emotions put to music so well. I think he has not been given credit due for his ability to say what is felt with words. So to the point and heartfelt. He has something that few people are ever gifted with. If you know "For Emily Wherever I May Find Her" you know what I'm talking about. Listen to it sometime "we walked on frosted fields of juniper and lamplight." If i am in a state of panic or anxiety, all I have to do is listen to something by Paul Simon and I am calm. Of course, the sweetness of Garfunkel's voice cannot be denied.
It was May 2000 I Met a man and immediately he became my "something so right" I moved from Venice to Maggiore Lake where our wonderful smiling daughter Is Born in 2002. After few years we moved to Lake Garda. Great places to live but my husband wanted to divorce 10 yrs ago. Maybe he wasn' t really so right ...🤔
Yes, the words"genius", and "top of his game" definitely fit here perfectly. What an amazing legacy of daring and unique songs he has. So diverse.....maybe more so than anyone in history.....it has to be between him and Dylan. Dylan's peaks were higher in some ways, but Paul is more consistent than anyone in quality of material and performance.
I wish with all my heart that I could have produced a sound like he did, both instrumentally and vocally. If I could play an instrument, it would be a guitar. I thought about it once, but I didn't think I could ever play as well as I could sing. Paul Simon is a genius in his own right...WOW! Thank you for this....
A magnum opus. He has so so many great songs in his remarkable repertoire that I've loved for over 60 years, but this one to my mind, is the most sublime. The chord changes are magical and the melody and lyrics equally so. The bridge is almost another song in its own right.
I knew Richard Tee and he was not only an incredible musician, but a wonderful human being. It showed when he played, i believe. I really miss him. Sometimes i see these videos and it suddenly hits me again and i do admit i shed a tear.
Ever notice how Paul's fans are so familiar with his songs that he needs to play the fewest notes for them to recognize the song? I am proudly one of them.
He writes unique intros though. The opening to The Boxer for example is just iconic. His earliest works in the Simon & Garfunkel aren't as distinguishable.
I woke up this morning with this wonderful tune bringing me into the brand new day. "How wonderful", I thought... I'd like to share it with as many of you as I can, so that it may also rub off onto you too. And I hope it does. With every day that passes, I seem t be becoming more grateful. Yes, there are some nasty things happening in the world around us, BUT when I look at how much I can be grateful for, much of that just seems to fade away. I have tried to become more of an "open book" & you know what ! It's great. Why shouldn't I ! If I was, I'd be scared to share & that would be a travsety of why I & yes you, are here. Even a little bit of sharing is good & for those who don't have it can seem to be a LOT ! Try it. The more we share, according to our means of course, the more the joy that comes from it grows. Love you guys ! You know it don't ya ! Thanks Paul Simon for this wonderful song & having such a nice way of putting many things into perspctive ! Love you too ! Bet you knew that too !
Great song with some lovely jazzy chords. The electric piano blends beautifully with the seemingly effortless guitar playing, sweet singing and subtle self deprecating lyrics.
To the earlier question: There's a pickup in the guitar, and he's transmitting wirelessly via a transmitter mounted on the guitar strap (behind his back). If you watch him pick up the guitar at the beginning of the clip, you can see it as he puts the strap over his head.
What a great song always been a one of my favorite Paul Simon songs and I trying to learn it on guitar at the moment but it's hard what a genius Paul Simon really is.
Paul Simon mostly writes stuff that falls very easily under the fingers. When you see the TAB, you'll find this one is really not so hard. Check it out: www.paul-simon.info/PHP/showsongtab.php?songnummer=147
You are right, I didn't know. But thanks for putting this up. If you have extracts from the concert, including the atmosphere between songs, I'd love to see it. I've seen Paul do this song on TV many times, but this is the most beautiful rendering of the song I've ever heard.
Wow, this brings back memories. I remember watching this concert on HBO, and I videotaped it (unfortunately the old VHS tape is unplayable now), and I also had this portable Panasonic tape recorder that I held up to the TV so I could record the audio on these crappy Certron cassette tapes. I used to go to sleep listening to this concert...
Wow.. All this time I thought Annie Lenox was the original singer of this song. I loved her version so much I would put it on repeat. His original is a masterpiece.
thanks maslick for taking the time to post this....it is just so very good. this is one of the best song paul wrote and he has written some of the best songs of all time.. thanks again
If anyone knows of more songs from this particular concert, it would be GREAT to see the rest of THIS show.~ Please post ~ By the way, we know this is Paul but it's REALLY ART :)
Hi maslick, yes i did. We were close friends. He was someone who could light up a room with his smile and such a gentle and sweet soul. It's hard to watch these videos sometimes.

i suppose you don't even know how:) each concert consists (along with lovely music and great voice and guitar play) of warm atmosphere and very very funny jokes!!!
hi! so very good?! :) smth so right:)))))) as far as i know Paul has written the words to this marvellous tune, or i might be mistaken.. Still it's my favourite song and i'm collecting all of its live performances. I like the arrangement of the 1993 Lifetime tour very much!!! :)
Yes Captain!! after sleeping out the back Jack :) just pick you guitar and play, play, play.. this wonderful song. Great, there are many variants Paul did - so you won't be bored. More over it's rather complicated :))

My favorite song for ever. Paul was and is still a genius songwriter and singer.
just like a child longing to be told

I knew Richard Tee and he was not only an incredible musician, but a wonderful human being. It showed when he played, i believe. I really miss him. Sometimes i see these videos and it suddenly hits me again and i do admit i shed a tear.
He really made this song and so many others. Can you imagine this song or "Still Crazy" without the Rhodes?
Paul Simon at the top of his game
What a treat
What a great songwriter

That's a likely way to put it. Life is short, take everrything in stride and enjoy the ride.
Com certeza, música boa não tem prazo de validade, é pra sempre, que Deus o abençoe sempre que tenha muito sucesso pela frente, muito obrigado!
What a talent,
What a guitarist,
What a song of soul striking.
And one more thing,
What a great guitar sound of his Guild f-30r special !
The best song writer of our generation
Bridge over troubled water is incredible and this tune.
Amazing.
HIs chords are sublime
What a beautiful song and performance. Thank you for posting.
This may be the greatest song he ever wrote. Brilliant!
Yes it is 👍🏼
Wonderful wonderful song beautiful lyrics! One of Paul Simon's best evers in my humble opinion!
Handsome man with wonderful voice :-)
I haven't much knowledge of music but I suspect of all the wonderful songs he has written this is one of the most technically gifted songs.
Great song with some lovely jazzy chords. The electric piano blends beautifully with the seemingly effortless guitar playing, sweet singing and subtle self deprecating lyrics.
Is it Richard Tee on piano and Steve Gadd on drums?
@@davidkorneliussen5577 Yep.
Time to say he,s a great guitarist also who influenced me to play.
I was just listening to this on my iPod and came here to find a video. Thanks for posting this.... one of his most beautiful songs.
He's so young here. I love his music. The lyrics are amazing....so beautiful........so true.....
Paul Simon The Great!
The best piece of pop-music EVER (IMO!).
Poignantly beautiful music.
Paul Simon is the man
the words, the feel--wish I could go back in time; would pay all my savings just to see him play that night ...
If Bach was a singer-songwriter. Paul Simon is one of the best

I have one favourite song after the next from Paul's albums, this song I is a special song - love him very much!
Always come back to this
I love simon so much!~~~
What a great song always been a one of my favorite Paul Simon songs and I trying to learn it on guitar at the moment but it's hard what a genius Paul Simon really is.

Jesus H. Christ - What a performance. I'll think I'll go and faint now!!
This guy's artistic talent was kissed by God himself!!
Simply a masterpiece
Incredibly beautiful.
Stunning performance of a lovely song.
Haunting.❤️🎼
there's another one in concert from Chicago, 1980 which i really think is the greatest version of this beautiful tune :)
This is a brutally difficult song to play on guitar. It's like he threw in as many chords as possible. The result is, of course, splendid. :)
***** Yuck, don't know why you had to take my comment to somewhere so low. I'm straight anyway, so I don't want a female.
Paul Simon mostly writes stuff that falls very easily under the fingers. When you see the TAB, you'll find this one is really not so hard. Check it out: www.paul-simon.info/PHP/showsongtab.php?songnummer=147
I bet 7 years ago you that the chord sequence was 100% lifted from Bach
lyrically, harmonically, tonally... genius.
You are right, I didn't know. But thanks for putting this up. If you have extracts from the concert, including the atmosphere between songs, I'd love to see it.
I've seen Paul do this song on TV many times, but this is the most beautiful rendering of the song I've ever heard.
His guitar playing is excellent.
Soooo sweet...! ♡
