Although this doesn't take place in Chicago this brings back good memories of training in this system as a young kid with Sifu Jack Soderberg, Daniel "Johnny Cage" Pesina and Richard "Bruce" Lamoureaux. Thank you for that "ratatouille" moment!

I have all of sifu ross,s books, all are fantastic and i train from them, makes me wonder why robert w. Smith overlooked these styles in his writings, he also overlooked choi li fut and pak mei as well, all terrific styles...

Have you ever read Robert Smith's book and wondered about how he criticised Shuai Jiao master Chang Dongsheng? Want to know the FULL STORY? Among the comments Smith makes are that Shuai Jiao has no foot sweeps (Ti or foot sweeping may be the LARGEST of the 84 families! AND a foot sweep was the third thing taught by Chang in his arrangement)
Smith says the falling method is inferior to Judo's, then relates a bizzare story about how he fell down, used the Judo method and BROKE HIS ARM. He seems to imply that it would have been worse if he had used the Shuai Jiao method....
Bizzare enough on its own, but as someone who in the early days took falls regularly on a basketball court and was thrown once on a marble floor, I disagree.
But what is the BACK STORY here? It begins with an interview with Taiji teacher Cheng Man-ch'ing (back in Taiwan). Cheng Man-ch'ing was asked what he would do against a wrestler and Cheng stated he would use Dian 點. Much silliness is made of Dian 點 including talk of "death touches" etc but really it means using sharp tools (not just fingers) against vulnerable points.
Despite this, the interview apparently got back to Chang Dongsheng. Chang contacted the interviewer and stated that in all his years in the Wu Lin, he had NEVER seen successful Dian 點. Keep in mind that Chang was the heavyweight Lei Tai champion of China, undefeated in challenge matches, the youngest instructor every at the Central Kuoshu Academy and a military and police instuctor. His experience was VAST
Chang also state matter-of-factly that if he could touch you , he could hurt you. And that in all his travels no one had ever kept him from touching him. The context and subtext was clear, Chang was challenging Cheng to demonstrate his Dian 點. Cheng declined.
This left a very bad relationship between Chang and Cheng Man-ch'ing. There was one very clear rule afterwards, no one who wanted to train with Chang could associate with Cheng Man-ch'ing.
One day, Chang observed Robert Smith with Cheng Man-ch'ing. Of course, Smith was studying Taiji with Cheng and it was not hard to verify this. Chang told Smith he could no longer study Shuai Jiao. Chang threw Smith out.... and Smith responded with negative comments about Chang and Shuai Jiao for the next 30 years in that book and other sources

@@DavidRoss2780A yes i have smith,s books, his book on shaolin had me wondering if he learned shaolin in the Twilight zone, anyhow, Smith seemed to favor internal Arts tai chi pa kua, though nowadays, arts like aikido, tai chi, pa kua are regarded as not being all that effective, even john painter once told me that the older pa kua styles were not all that great. And while i do train in external styles, i also train tai chi, however my approach is more pragmatic, after all, i don't want to try using tai chi on a boxer or wrestler and end up getting murdered, that said, i hope to hear from you again and god bless you...

Sorry to say that Gei Bon Kyuhn is the only set I remember. Still, I don't feel under gunned.
