The Cheng Ting Hua Shuaijiao pit explanation for the circle walking is the most practical and compelling explanation that I’ve heard. Hai Yang has a pretty extensive deep dive into the history on his channel, and it explains a lot about Ba Gua’s practical application, as well. No idea if it’s true, but, it makes the most sense to me in comparison to the story of adapting Taoist ritual to combat (which admittedly sounds much cooler and is better for marketing 😅)

I studied (casually), bagua and xingyi in the same park in Atlanta for a couple years. The bagua guys were Hung-I Mien lineage, and the xingyi guys were Hung-I Hsiang. This was my introduction to kung fu. From my perspective, the connection is unquestionable. It’s 2 halves of the same coin, and you may as well learn both if you want to bother with either.

I remember when I first saw a late 90s UFC bout on VHS, where a shootfighter trained by Ken Shamrock defeated his opponent with the crucifix.

Shootfighting,Shootboxing , Shootwrestling whatever you want to call it, it's a great combat sport that paved the way for modern MMA & is an effective way of learning basic hand to hand self defense skills This laid the framework for MMA while the UFC was still just an ambiguous no holds barred slugfest with fighters that had one dimensional skillsets. MMA itself isn't a system,Shootfighting tried to be ,but after you get past the very basics it's where you have to delve deeper into specialist knowledge in other combat sports & martial arts,as well as coming up with your own innovative ways of doing things .
