I'm from Afghanistan and I went to Shaolin Temple in China 5 years ago. One of the important thing I noticed that Chinese people really respect the fact that Budhidharma is from India and he brought this shaolin culture to China. Many cultures and countries don't recognise an art or fact that isn't theirs. my respect to both India and China ❤

This video is exactly how I have been taught AND experienced Shaolin kung fu. We regard Bodidharma as the first patriarch of both Shaolin kung fu, chi kung (internal aspect) and zen. And before him ofcourse the line of teachers back to the Buddha. Unfortunately the current Shaolin temple in China is a tourist trap. I mean no offense, it is a great wushu school but the essence of Shaolin was almost eradicated from China in several instances from before the fall of the Qing dynasty and especially the cultural revolution. Fortunately the arts live on outside China and in China itself several Daoist schools still maintain a very high level. For those genuine in their searching, when you are ready a master appears. Don't limit yourself - genuine yoga, kungfu, Taoist arts - different brands but the same essence. They are humanity's greatest treasures.

I remember going to stay at Shaolin Temple in 2000. Hard training. Bodhidharma's Cave is up on the hill above the Temple. Dhyana was pronounced "Chan" by the Chinese and Chan Buddhism spread to Korea where it is known as Seon and then onto Japan where it is known as Zen. We can say that Shaolin was the first Zen Buddhist Temple. This is a great connection between India and the Far East. Also, later the Chinese Monk Xuanzang in the Tang Dynasty travelled to India to collect the Buddhist Sutras. India and China and the Far East share strong spiritual links.

    • @MyChannel-bk3ef

Chinese Martial Arts was not quite given to it by BodhiDharma, Shaolin monks were incentivised to practice martial arts from then, in China, martial artists were everywhere, Even in First Emperor Q'in era, a lot of generals and kings were already well versed in it. Shaolin martial arts were also given by a lot of other contemporary artists, so it has many styles and forms and shapes

One of the most recently invented and familiar of the Shaolin historical narratives is a story that claims that the Indian monk Bodhidharma, the supposed founder of Chinese Chan (Zen) Buddhism, introduced boxing into the monastery as a form of exercise around a.d. 525. This story first appeared in a popular novel, The Travels of Lao T'san, published as a series in a literary magazine in 1907. This story was quickly picked up by others and spread rapidly through publication in a popular contemporary boxing manual, Secrets of Shaolin Boxing Methods, and the first Chinese physical culture history published in 1919. As a result, it has enjoyed vast oral circulation and is one of the most "sacred" of the narratives shared within Chinese and Chinese-derived martial arts. That this story is clearly a twentieth-century invention

Yoga actually means discipline. So there are many types of "yoga". The martial arts disciplines were banned by the British in India. Martial arts also existed already in China when Bodhidharma arrived, including at the Shaolin Temple. Taoist masters, as well as Chinese military had their own styles for centuries before Bodhidharma. What made the Shaolin Temple unique in regard to martial arts was the monks practiced every day, all day, for most of their lives, and so were unparalleled masters. With that reputation, many martial artists from all over China, and the world, went to study with them, and in turn shared their own styles. The Shaolin Temple was the first time all these styles got fully documented, and their training was systematized.

The important part of this story is that bodhidharma had laid the foundation of the patriach lineage of his teaching called Chan Buddhism, which illuminates the Mahayana and vajrayana teachings. However, because the Chinese had not understood the meaning of his visit and had not listened to his wisdom he had only left them written teachings, which later had to be translated into Chinese by another Indian monk that was in China at that time. Bodhidharma continued his journey back to central Tibet and taught the Tibetan people his wisdom of the vajrayana teachings.

I've researched the history of the Chinese & Japanese Martial Systems years ago quite in depth. From an Historical scholarly perspective, or any other for that matter, there are a great many versions and accounts of these histories, depending on WHEN/WHERE & from WHOM these "historical re-accountings" are sourced. The vague & oversimplified story here is a popular one and asserts the Indian Buddhist connection/origins of contemporary popular Martial Art systems throughout Asia. Yet, here is so refined and condensed so that it is almost non-sensible.

I have heard that Prince Narendra of Kanchipuram, third in line for the throne, became a Buddhist monk. He is not from Mahabalipuram but could have roamed around in his pet elephant and horse. Perhaps he walked north and reached China via Tibet. I was wonder stuck when a cultural show there about 30 years back had Silambam demonstration. I knew the same movements and twirling of the long stick. I understood immediately that it has travelled from Tamilnadu to China. Hail Tamil, (Thamilh), one of the ancient living languages. I always thought it was to buddhist monks, carrying around stuff as they hurried along the monastery corridors to attend classes and services, but who still needed to salute and greet teachers respectfully along the way, that the one-handed gesture was attributed. But then, if these ancient monks was taught Shaolin kung fu as part of the obligatory training so they could protect themselves on pilgrimages, I guess there's no real difference anyhur.

Bodhidharma ‘’達摩‘’ went to China to teach the Zen meditation method, we consider him the first patriarch then came down to 6th generation where it blossomed. Before Bodhidarma left Shaolin temple to leave for pilgrammage he left some yogic breathing exercises for the monks to practice to strengthen body and for protection, e.g. "Bone changing classics" 《易筋經》and "Washing tendon classics" 《洗髓經》. Then over the centuries, martial arts developed on its own inside the two Shaolin temples, and likely some travelling monks (even laymen) across China when visiting the temples should have also contributed to the volume of these Shaolin martial arts.
