Are Silicone Products A Safe Replacement For Plastic Cookware?

- Is silicone a good replacement for plastics in cooking utensils and Tupperware?
While fairly inert at room temperature, silicon can release volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) when heated.
These compounds can be absorbed and enter cells in our bodies.
Most researchers currently believe that these compounds are not as dangerous as chemicals released from plastics. However, we do not have long-term studies of exposure to these compounds. Therefore I would caution people using silicone compounds in food preparation when heating is involved. For storage purposes and cold forms for example for making Popsicles, I think silicone is most likely safe to use.
Whenever possible, it is best to use stainless steel, ceramic, or wood when preparing and especially heating food.

How to find out if something is 100% food grade silicone, or it has additives in it (hence toxins or fillers) - basically, how to do a "silicone check test"?
Thank you. I’d like to see us use bioengineering for safer polymers. Think of enamel, bone, horn, and spider silk. No micro/nano-plastics or endocrine disrupters.
Caustic exposure leech anything? Is there a SDS for food silicone?
100 agreed so well said ! Cold and hot are two different temp we must be careful for ! I do not use silicon spatula for cooking at all, esp strict NO for anything warm /Hot
Can you make a non toxic fridge organization video soon please?
good vid doc thx!
What would you say about silicone PopCorn microwave making containers (PopCorn popping bowls) - they are supposed to be a better alternative to making healthier pop corn but not as messy as in a pot, however, that's heating it up in a microwave. Please advise.
It's heated in the microwave, so probably better to be on the safe side and do it the hard way if you're looking to minimize exposure and risk
Use a cast iron pot and organic coconut, avocado, or *true* extra virgin olive oil.
But bothering about the silicone seems a bit of a side-line if you are using a microwave!! ?
How do you know which wood is safe? Are wood products coated with anything? I always feel like wood never really gets clean.
Lots of low cost wood/bamboo items at Dollar stores, these make me nervous though.
The wood for cooking utensils should not be treated with chemicals. if it looks like a coating has been used, it’s best not to buy the item.
Very help full , thank u
Glad it helped
Does this mean that it's safe to use silicone when you freeze in popsicles and ice cubes? as long as it's not heated or in form of any fats
Yes, if the silicone is not heated, it should be safe in contact with foods.
Very helpful. Thank you 🙏🏼
Hi, I was planning to buy air fryer. Most of them comes with teflon non stick coating. I was thinking if I use parchment paper will it make my food safer?. Also teflon leeches at higher temperatures than max temperatures in air fryer 200C. Should I at all be worried about teflon on my food in air fryer?
Parchment paper is often coated with silicone. This may cause issues but it’s safer than PFAS. Teflon will leech even at “lower” temperatures but in higher and more concerning amounts at 450-500 degrees Fahrenheit.
Have there been any discoveries of negative impacts from the copper water pipes and/or the solder that holds them together?
We have a power-free Reverse Osmosis system by Kinetico that produces filtered water with 4 ppm, down from 200-400 ppm from our well. Unfortunately, the tubes delivering the water are plastic...
Consuming too much copper may be problematic. Copper pipes are generally thought to be safe for drinking water. I would not recommend to use copper cookware. A reverse osmosis system should filter out copper from your water.
How about copper or brass food containers?
I would prefer to use, stainless steel, ceramic, or glass.
Incise the mokapot also there is silicon, what about that is it safe ?
There is a thin silicon seal, but it should have minimal if any contact with the inside. I do not find that to be concerning.
Hello, Do you advise against silicone mats for baking?
I would
Baking uses heat...
why? when you have other options
I was doubting whether this is good for health when heated but google told me that is safe. I was skeptical because I know this isn’t safe and the internet can lie so I came to TH-cam and found this video. Now I not gonna buy it. Thanks for the video.
TH-cam is not internet ?😂😂😂
natural rubber maybe safer
are tires made out of natural rubber? i heard recycled tires cause cancer
Is there any kitchen tool made of real rubber
Question: Is it completely safe to pour a hot liquid like a hot gelatin liquid into a silicone mold?
Silicone is much preferable over any plastic as it comes to flexible forms. Short exposures to warm or hot temperatures like gelatin should be OK. I would not necessarily cook or bake in silicon forms for prolonged periods of time though.
@@JonasKuehneMD thanks for replying.
@@jmnueva3969This was exactly what I was searching for,… I Appreciate you asking 🙏🏼
yes. I think i will stay away from silicone cookwares too
Is it safe for babies?
It’s better than plastic. I Still prefer glass bottles and wood utensils.
Remember ! When Plastics were introduced, those were deemed as eco-friendly, sounds almost like oxymoron today but back then it was Greta Thunberg grade logic. 😂😂😂
Similarly I won't be amused if after some decades, some other "scientist" will declare silicone as mother of all problems.
😂😂😂
I prefer iron and wood.
😂😂😂
The basics are time-tested and best.
Iron, wood, clay, best optiona
