Also the effects in the GT-100 are really superb. I think what a lot of people don't do is try to create a sound of their own rather than create a sound that everyone else is using. You can do this with a GT-100. All these guys want to sound like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson, Clapton or whoever. These guys are either here or were. You're only going to sound like a bad version them. Be yourself, you're the only one who can.
But like many others I have had trouble getting the tones I am looking for. However, I believe that the challenge is pobably my ears not the equipment. When I played years ago, all effects were pedals. Now there are so many customizable parameters it is hard to find that just that right mixture. For example, it would be a lot easier for me to just plug in an old Fuzz when I do "I can't get no Satisfaction" then to play with all those dials. I just can't seem to get that pure fuzz tone?
Just heard this....great demo Paul, and great playing as well.....tone nailed perfectly....very helpful demo. Adding all that Middle and the OD boost really makes a difference without muddying the sound. Thanks.
Wow503, below thinks a Line 6 processor sounds better than the Boss GT-100 I used here in the video. But that's like Tony Iommi liking Laney amps, Wishbone Ash liking early Orange amps, and Pete Townshend liking Hiwatts. Actually in the early days Pete really liked a 3x10 Bandmaster and a Chet Atkins guitar in the studio. Of course, we all have different tastes. The sounds in the video were the sounds I was going for when I did the video. In Answer to Wow503: yes, I recently did have my hearing checked! I must admit after over 40 years of playing gigs, my top end hearing is not good. You may be right about that. ;-) On most Boss or Line 6 gear I can get tones that I like, they are both great companies and make amazing boxes! And, at a low cost too! I especially like the Boss ME-80, around 300 bucks! Btw, I compressed this video because so it would upload faster, that's why it's a bit grainy. (When I did it my internet was not very fast.) Rock on!! PH
Really well done video. Clear and useful explanations. I like that you demonstrated how to use the two signal paths in the GT-100 to get a lead boost with the Accel pedal. Nice guitar playing too.
Hi Paul. Thanks for the excellant tutorial. You really are a very talented teacher. I just bought a Boss GT 100. I chose it because I am doing a broadway style type of show which incorprates 9 period pieces. Since the show is kind of a History Doumentary I want to recreate the toe for each song as close as possible. That's why I bought the Boss GT 100 rather than the POD HD 500. I wanted those Boss chips.
I'm a die-hard tube amp analog effects guy, who's really into old-school sounds...not too high-gain, but needed something that sounds real, that I can use at church-I think the GT-100 sounds the best out of those i've heard. Paul you nailed Clapton's tone. Thanks for the great demo.
Hi Jaya, there are at least 200 sounds in the preset area (called patches). Play through every patch until you find the ones that sound like the clean one, and Gary Moore one you want. When you have chosen a patch you like press WRITE. Then select a User location like U 1-1 or U 1-2... etc., then press WRITE again, That'll save them in the User area, then start adjusting them. Call the Roland product support guys if you can't figure it out, they rock!!!
I'm not sure what makes these amps 'advanced', but I will say this: I LOVE MY GT-100!!!! In fact, I have sold EVERYTHING else. My signal chain is Guitar > GT-100 > powered speakers
Just bought a Headrush 112 powered speaker cab. Love it with the GT100! Can't believe that I tried using the GT100 through anything BUT a powered, flat response, cab! Such a vast improvement!
I have never tried the AXE-Fx. With gear I just start with the amp model pick an overdrive if I want, or other effect then turn knobs until it sounds good!!!
Hey Alan, thx for the comment! However, have to disagree with you a bit. I didn't do much tweaking on the GT-100 amp models and I think they sound pretty good. But tweaking is where it's at, I never leave my amp's knobs in the same place as where they were in the store. I have a challenge for ya. Tell me which was the amp model and which was the Peavey 5150 on "Mach Rocks" from my latest album? The rhythms or the leads? (I just posted the song here at youtube.)
It is so amazing how the sound come out perfectly. I wish you can do some more videos like this. For instance, Carlos Santana, Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, etc. Thank you so much. You are the awesome!!! God Bless you!
Digital is really coming along. I've got a GT-100 and I absolutely love it. I've also got a few Strymon pedals and the El Capistan and Blue Sky Reverb sound better than any real tape echo or tube reverb I've ever heard or owned without the hassles. Tube amps are great but getting high quality tubes is almost impossible now-a-days. Every time you have to re-tube your amp you're running the risk of it sounding like a totally different amp.
Ho prob Christopher. For this I ran into a line input of my audio interface. Just an average USB audio interface that attaches to my computer. If I were to go into a 4X12 cab or something else like that I would need a power amp. The Gt-100 will work this way too. I use the VG-99 direct into a PA live all the time.
Tone comes from the brain!! If you have an old Fender Combo and a Maestro fuzz that'll do the Satisfaction tone but you still need to think like Kieth Richards!!! Btw, he's really smart!
Hi Peter, you are right, BOSS puts everything but the kitchen sink in their Multi FX!!! Maybe the sink will be in a future product ;) I was a clinician for BOSS and carried those BOSS products all over the country in planes, cars, etc... I used to drop those GTs in Guitar Centers then stand on the knobs to get the sales guys attention, maybe one or two knobs fell off but I don't think I ever had one break!!
Okay I have to confess, honestly I don't remember which were the 5150 and which were the VG-99, and I recorded it! I just don't remember. Digital is so amazing these days. Check out my interview with Andy Summers, Andy talks about having all these amps in the live room and feeling guilty that he never uses them: bossus.com podcasts, BTR 30
Paul thank you for the tutorial & you are a MONSTER player! The thing that is troubling me is that I cant figure out how to bypass the Gt-100 completely if I just want the sound of my amp ... my clean sounds better than the presets , would you know how to accomplish this ?
I've been using this pedal for a few months and the only option is to go totally clean with bass/mid/treble set at the same level. To truly bypass it, you'd have to use something like a bypass switcher (like the "Voodoo Lab Pedal Switcher True Bypass Loops") to take the Boss in and out of the signal chain.
Enable the S/R setting on a patch. If you also combine that with the 4 cable method and use the GT100 as a stomp box. You need effects loop or send receive on amp for4 cable set up...demos on you tube. You will retain your amp tone. In essence 4 cable plus that s/r setting on
Hey mate, great you tube vid. I use to think the same as BartoszXIV about multieffects, they just had this tinne sound to them but that was a long time ago. i went to a muisc shop and saw the gt 100, i pluged it in played around on it for some time, WOW!!! i thought is this digital. what great tones it had. i love it so i brought it. you can make and do pretty much what sounds you want from it. you can plug it straight in to a pa, play around with the sounds to make it sound like a jcm. i loveit
Paul Hi, stumbled on your excellent vid' ,I just got the GT for live gigs, duo work direct to P.A through a A&H 10 fx into an FBT vertus system, problem I have is that I set up my patches at home through a small mixer into Truth B2031A"s and great sound, through live rig C***p sound,no cut, no fizz. O/D sounds disappear in mix. I must be missing a few tricks, the manual is not very good on set-up details. Driving me nuts as I hear amazing demo's and get awful results, what am I missing here? my previous Vox S.E sounded fine just retired with age and W&T. The GT in no way compares to the Kemper' which we keep in the studio but that is not allowed out on the road and another one is too expensive, sadly as it is the No1 unit around.
Gear always sounds different through a PA than studio monitors. When I use a Boss processor live I will do small tweaks during soundcheck listening through the system that I will end up playing through with the band. That being said it sounds to me like you may have something going on, maybe the mixer trim settings, or a phase issue if you are running stereo?? or something else... Your output setting should be set to "Line" or if you like a darker sound maybe "Stack". You also have global eq settings? Maybe something is plugged in wrong, are you using it stereo in the studio then mono live? That could be an issue also. You should use a line input on the mixer not a mic in... You probably already checked this though...? Keep me posted I'm always interested in gear problems as I want to avoid them myself!! The GT-100 should have no problems running it the way you want, it's just setting it up right that's hard because there are so many choices.
Paul Hanson Cheers Paul,I started to revamp my sounds today by setting the Vertus up facing me and re-e.q.ing the patches and what I notice is that what I hear coming at me is a lot different than I hear on gigs , the system is active with 2x8' 600w bass bins and 2x6x4.5'' +4x1' horn columns at 700w each with internal dsp . Using a PRS studio with GTech midi out to GR55 then driving GT100. I followed some of your tips and results seem promising.Still not Kemper' class but very usable for m,o,r gigs.
When I upgraded my notebook Windows to version 10 my GT 100 no longer was recognized for the system. Before that upgrade the gear worked properly. How do I proceed? Thanks.
+Eduardo De Castro, I am not a Boss product support guy but sounds to me like you just need to install the latest Boss GT-100 driver for your computer. Make sure the driver is for Windows 10. If that doesn't work then contact Boss.
Great demo Paul, thanks. If you don't mind I have a question, I would like to control the system function to turn on and off the USB control by one of the pedals, can this be done?
I am pretty sure the USB in the GT-100 is for two things, 1) using Boss computer editor program "Boss Tone Studio", 2) streaming audio into your DAW with the driver you can download at BOSS. I'm not sure what you application is but you can probably find a work around to do whatever you want with this box. The GT-100 is very deep, and BOSS, in typical BOSS style, includes so many possibilities you'll need to ask Thomas Nordegg, not me.
I have a series of soft instruments setup in Abelton Live, and I am using the GT100 (connected by USB) as my interface. I would like to be able to enable and disable the mix signal, which can be done manually, however, I would like to enable and disable by using one of the pedals on the GT100.
Hi Sky Gale, nope, the GK is on that guitar mainly for my VG-99, my favorite box!! It uses modeling technology, not pitch to voltage like guitar synths. It's regular guitar pickup processing, amp modeling etc. is great too!!! The GK on the guitar is for guitar modeling, I use that for looping gigs so I can play bass and acoustic tones with my guitar. (Btw Roland does not make the VG in any more). I always have issues with guitar synths because they have tracking problems and false triggering. The newer GR-55 includes pitch to voltage along with guitar modelling so there are advantages if you blend the two, it'll cover the tracking issues. It was all the GT-100 in the vid, amp models and effects etc...
well my next question is have you noticed the the false triggering and tracking in the GR (side note# I will probably never play speed metal or licks that fast simply because I can't)? I was looking at the GR simply because going down to one guitar makes so much more sense when the synth can be a bass, acoustic, 12 string, & etc. anyway I want to say you definitely have me looking at the GT-100 now as a likely alternative and I will make do. Thanks
Sky Gale Yep the GR synths will false trigger once in a while. Go to ebay and get a Roland VG-99! You can do bass and acoustic guitar, synth type sounds, organ etc. But no pitch to voltage so no false triggers. Guitar modeling! You'll still need a GR pickup and 13 pin cable. Some people swear by the GR synths but I like the VGs!!!
Sky Hi,the GR55 is a good unit in lots of ways but a frustration in others,I found that setting my R,R strat up was a breeze but the G-TECH PEIZO system a nightmare, also a lot of sounds from the GR 33 are missing like choral patches that I used a lot,for tracking the fishman wireless unit is tops but needs an iPad or lap top.
TheAngello120 My advice is get used to using the free GR-55 Librarian program for your computer. You can load in a Multitude of patches to find the ones you want. Here ones by famous artists and my 25 based on famous synth songs: www.rolandus.com/go/gr-55_artist_patches/
Hi. I'm wondering if you can help me out with a problem. I have a problem that both my MacBook pro and pc are not recognizing the gt-100 when connecting with a usb cable. The usb cable is very thin but does work with a presonus faderport. Does this just mean that the cable is to thin or is my gt-100 faulty?
Maybe a setting in the GT-100, somewhere. I don't have a GT here but as I recall there is probably a USB setting in the System Settings that's turned off. Read about using the GT with a computer in the manual, or call Roland product support, it's free!
Excellent tutorial but a noob right here. I thought you created two patches there by adjusting the other patch in a different signal. One is for rythm and the other one is for solo. You saved the two patches all at once? Or is it only one patch?
should I buy gt 100? should I keep my gt 10? I have to decide right now and I dont really know what to do, is gt100 much better?? is it worth the upgrade? not worth?
Anyone know how these units sound with the amp modeling bypassed? Do they suck your tone or leave a pure signal? I've always like boss / roland effects but prefer real tube overdrive & saturation so this may be a great way to get multi-effects in a single unit if the sims can be bypassed.
Bypassing the amp models and cabs are easy, just turn them off in the patch. All the GTs work great this way. Insert the GT in the fx loop and you'll get very nice delays, 'verbs, modulation effects etc. I would suggest to try this out first and if any of your tone is missing, you could add a mixer to run the GT at 100% effect and then dial in the effect by percentage from the mixer... but the mixer might suck tone too and it just adds more gear and more hassle. Try it out first. But read the manual because the GTs are deep and can do just about anything and there are a lot of settings in there. The Boss MEs are easier to run but not as deep.
Hey many amp models doe this thing have? This thing is great, awesome! Off the hook. This is going to be my first pedal, is it better than the BOSS ME-80.
Hi Asdf, you'll need to install the latest driver from Boss into your computer. Also check your PC software is compatible with the driver. I seem to remember there may be a USB on/off switch in system settings. The manual will tell you. Pretty sure you can download the manual from www.BossUs.com. If you can't figure it out you'll have to contact Boss product support. All the best! PH
Paul Hanson i did researched that 2.03 version does not work for windowd 10 and that is my operating system for my pc. i cant believe a flagship device is giving me issues like this. my older boss me-25 is plug n play auto install. anyway thank you sir!
You know, after it's mixed it's hard to tell what is real and what was mic'd. I think the main difference is that real amp tones have more artifacts. Weird crackles, things vibrating in the room, loose screws, microphonic tubes, rattling in the cabinet... on and on... I guess the Line 6 and Boss engineers need to add these? But the poor studio engineers have been trying to remove these artifacts since amps were originally mic'd!
It really depended on how much hairspray I used. Unlike other players I didn't use Auqua Net. I used a generic pump spray from Ralphs. Better for my scalp!! Btw, the Ralphs on McBean Pkwy in Valencia, is the best! Next door is the Wolf Creek Brewing Co. so... after shopping you can have a frosty one!
Paul Hanson Paul what conditioner do you use these days apparently Johnny Marr and Peter Buck use Head and shoulders " Ultra" and they said it improved their guitar playing ten fold and beyond ... thanks again Paul just love that Layla intro, just like the real thing nice one bye
The saddest thing about the GT series is that there are very usable amp sounds in there but you have to tweak so much to get even close to a real amp. A lot of the models in this video sound like a heavily eq'd DS-1.
Yes the GT-100 has many tentacles... very deep and complex. the ME-70 is much easier! The ME-25 is cheap $200! And it sounds as good as the GT and ME-70 but it is kind of hard to program. Not bad when you get the hang of it. You have to go into editing mode then all the knobs do editing. Also you can't jump from patch 2 to 5, you have to step through patch 2, 3, 4, then to 5. But the ME 25 is a killer deal!!
Boss used to have a digital model of a Rockman in the GTs. Not sure if it's still there but as I recall it sounded close the the classic unit. I don't know if you've heard a Rockman recently but none of the amp models I played in this video sound like one. I admit if you A/B, in recordings of the combo model in this GT to a "59 Bassman combo recording they will sound different. But have you ever A/B'd one Bassman to another, they sound different too. Btw, I am a huge Tom Scholz fan!! Rock on!
Hi BartoszXIV, my recent album Mindscanner was recorded with Marshalls, A Fender Princeton, a Peavey 5150, and the Roland VG-99 (a completely digital unit, no tubes, no mic, just direct). Check out this song. Can you detect which tracks are digital and which was the 5150? youtube(dot)com/watch?v=5PNJxS03s_Q
Anyway I think multieffects like gt100 work only with metal because of its shitty digital sound in the background... 2:50 AC/DC?? No way... I had boss gt-10 and before I bought it I tought that it is the solution (all in one, less cables etc.) but now I don't. If you need toy you can buy it but if you want good sound let it go and buy some of real pedals
The best tutorial about the GT-100 I've ever seen so far! Awsome, thank you
An excellent demo of the GT100 and outstanding chops! Wow!
Just bought a GT100 and you've explained creating a patch brilliantly! Thank you!
But like many others I have had trouble getting the tones I am looking for. However, I believe that the challenge is pobably my ears not the equipment. You are an awesome tutor and guitarist.. thanks a lot for this VDO
Really well done video. Clear and useful explanations. I like that you demonstrated how to use the two signal paths in the GT-100 to get a lead boost with the Accel pedal. Nice guitar playing too.

Hi Toomath, when patch making I research what the guy used and try to match the gear in the virtual world. That's we're to start at least. PH
Thanks Paul you are a great teacher and an amazing guitar player , the video really helped out
That's the way I feel about my VG-99. You get used to the tone and how it works... it becomes a part of your playing and sound!

The leads are with the VG-99.
actually, every fourth patch of a bank is a clean or somekind of clean channel
cheeky smiler lol. love the Clapton tune
It was plugged direct into my computer's audio interface.
I am gonna do that too. After you get accustom to the sound, go for it
Detail is very important even the virtual mic!
Damn, that was cool & fun. Get mine tomorrow. I'll be Bach!
Great demo thanks
Right on point dude sounds just like it
Does anyone know what's the difference between "system 1", "system 2" and "system 3" in "System/preference/preamps"?

Hi brother', can You help yo do the SOUND OF THE Radiohead creep distrosion please something like that un this gt 100 thanks a lot
Tnx Sir , i found your vidio very help full
When I upgraded my notebook Windows to version 10 my GT 100 no longer was recognized for the system. Before that upgrade the gear worked properly. How do I proceed? Thanks.
+Eduardo De Castro, I am not a Boss product support guy but sounds to me like you just need to install the latest Boss GT-100 driver for your computer. Make sure the driver is for Windows 10. If that doesn't work then contact Boss.
ah, thanks, Paul! No matter what, when you compare side-by-side the Gt-10 and the Gt-100, the GT-100 sounds MUCH better.
Uaaaauuu!!!! You're greate, big musicia! Congratulations!!!
I would like to be able to enable and disable the mix signal, which can be done manually, however, I would like to enable and disable by using one of the pedals on the GT100.
amazing! at any point is the GK3 pickup involved in your tone with the GT-100? What is your opinion of the GR-55?
Thanks
Sky Gale
Yep the GR synths will false trigger once in a while.

My advice is get used to using the free GR-55 Librarian program for your computer. You can load in a Multitude of patches to find the ones you want. Here ones by famous artists and my 25 based on famous synth songs:

i just got a gt 100.. do some more vid. on it..
Read about using the GT with a computer in the manual, or call Roland product support, it's free!
thanks. I replaced the usb cable and it worked.
Nice demo.
Excellent tutorial but a noob right here. I thought you created two patches there by adjusting the other patch in a different signal. One is for rythm and the other one is for solo. You saved the two patches all at once? Or is it only one patch?
Any gt 100 owners ever utilize the direct mix of the amp modelers? I really don't know how to use the direct mix level...
Is that at the speaker cab page?
As I recall you can select Direct or one of the speaker cab models.
On the last page of the effects (amp models or stomps) its an effects level and a direct mix. I don't know what the direct mix is used for...
should I buy gt 100? should I keep my gt 10?
Hey Paul i'm about to trade a guitar for a Boss GT-100 and would like to use it for effects only, how I go about doing that.
I recently got a BOSS GT-10 ver 2.03, does it work with Windows 10? still not being detected by the pc for TOne studio... anyone can help?thanks!
That's kinda cool. I mean your style lol 👌keep it man
Sound Good in a PC or PA but in a Preamp with the 4 Cable Method its sound not so good, but great Video 👍
Is this good for Fender Mustang 1 v2 amp?
No its not good...no no no...well maybe
+STRICKEN any good amp you can suggest? The one that is easy to carry and good sounding amp coz I travel due to the kind of work that I have.
very nice man,.,.can you make a video creating heavy metal tone or metal tone.,.please thank you.,. i need your help for my gt-100 .,thanks.,.,
Awesome video..... perfect explained
your not fooolin anybody, your the bad ass who did the back to the future stuff...lol 8-)
Excellent thanks for the tip will download this vid into our file for personal use only.
Cheers.
Jk
Comedian Jon Reep?! I didn't know you played guitar too! "I'm from Hickory!"
Paul, be honest with us now... just how big was that mane of hair in the 80s?
It really depended on how much hairspray I used. Unlike other players I didn't use Auqua Net. I used a generic pump spray from Ralphs. Better for my scalp!! Btw, the Ralphs on McBean Pkwy in Valencia, is the best! Next door is the Wolf Creek Brewing Co. so... after shopping you can have a frosty one!
Lol, I knew it. You looked too much like CC Deville not to have huge 80s hair.
Paul Hanson Paul what conditioner do you use these days apparently Johnny Marr and Peter Buck use Head and shoulders " Ultra" and they said it improved their guitar playing ten fold and beyond ... thanks again Paul just love that Layla intro, just like the real thing nice one bye
dermot51 I really like Infusium 23. Really helps damaged hair like mine!
great video
Thanks so much for help me. Thanks,, very clear
Can you please clarify whether the gt 100 is connected through an amp or a PA system - thank you
I think they are called "advanced" because they are new and use a newer more advanced modeling technology than the older models.
Hmmm.. funny how we don't see his reply calling out exactly which tracks are digital and which are not.
very good review
Thank you!
Sounds like a rockman to me!!!
Rock on!
not to sound like a dweeb but I was just wondering, so you legit just take your boss gt100 and run it into a cab? do you go through any heads?
Powered cabs
Nice ass arpeggio sweeps
I heard Boss uses a new chip in the GT-100, more powerful.
This looks like a video from the 90s
Hi BartoszXIV, my recent album Mindscanner was recorded with Marshalls, A Fender Princeton, a Peavey 5150, and the Roland VG-99 (a completely digital unit, no tubes, no mic, just direct). Check out this song. Can you detect which tracks are digital and which was the 5150?

Tone sucker?
His Face @2:24
Thx Razvi!! Btw, have you checked out shredguitaronline(dot)com? You can sign up for my free tips and tricks!! I promise no spam!!
i did that too
Anyway I think multieffects like gt100 work only with metal because of its shitty digital sound in the background... 2:50 AC/DC?? No way... I had boss gt-10 and before I bought it I tought that it is the solution (all in one, less cables etc.) but now I don't. If you need toy you can buy it but if you want good sound let it go and buy some of real pedals
GT10 is better then GT100, the GT100 it is all about money GT100 sux a lot path is crap the software is worse GT10 onwed GT100
He has an awfull tone throw the video am i the only one noticing?? Like no mids or smth
