The problem I have with Shane is that he constantly plays off of his low self esteem as an excuse for the bad things he's done/doing. He is a terrible manipulator, and he gaslights his "friends" a lot. He's emotionally manipulative and toxic, while playing off that he's a "nice" guy.
If he says he is doing well, pleople get mad coz how can he be doing well after what he did- he needs to feel terrible. If he feels terrible - why is he acting like a victim!! I get why some people dont like Shane, or decide to never watch him again...What I dont get is the constant need to remind him and everyone else that why they hate him...honestly even a mentally healthy person d be after all the hate on the internet at worst suicidal at best a sociopath no longer caring for other opinions. I dont get the hate mob culture, I really dont...especially I dont get who anyone who is part of it can think they are a good person.

There is an inherent unfairness in being a celebrity: everyone has an opinion about you, even when they don't have the facts and they don't know you. This is always the case, and it's always unfair. The unfairness is the situation that you just described there: nothing is ever good enough. Whether Shane presents as sad or as happy, there's always someone who thinks he's having the wrong response, or that he's not being genuine. No normal person outside of the public eye has to endure this level of scrutiny, and yet we treat it like it's normal, that it's the price of fame, the same fame that gives these people their immeasurable wealth. But the thing with "mob mentality" is that it's just individual people having opinions. We have opinions about the non-celebrities in our lives as well. We make judgements without actually knowing someone. The unfairness of being a celebrity is the scale of the negativity you actually have to face, but behind it is just normal people. The scale of the individual sin is not that large in the end.
But the important thing is that none of this excuses Shane's behaviour. Even if you want to condemn people leaving nasty comments, Shane is still guilty and a toxic person to be around. Both Shane and his fans AND his critics can be toxic at the same time. Nasty comments are nasty comments, and they might be despicable. But so is Shane.
The biggest problem with shane is it was all about how his “cancellation” effected him rather than any consideration of how his actions hurt others
The thing about Shane is that he has the talent to manipulate his audience into feeling bad for him. He can manipulate the situation and make himself the victim and say that he has grown as a person. Not only that but he never left the internet. He was making appearances in Ryland’s channel/podcast and constantly posting on Instagram

Here’s the thing about Shane; his sincerity only goes so far. I’m gonna use his Shanaynay character for example. This character from 2008 is obviously a stereotypical caricature of a black “ghetto” woman. He received backlash for the character and using blackface, but he initially doubled-down that it was harmless “shock-jock comedy.” When the backlash kept coming, he stopped doing blackface, but kept doing the character. When he was called out for it again, he stopped doing the character, “apologized”, yet kept quietly selling Shanaynay merch. After that apology, the backlash died down, merch with the character appears in a video in 2018. And with this last round of backlash, people noticed that he was still selling Shanaynay merch as recently as 2019.
The problem isn’t that he keeps getting cancelled and recancelled for the same things over and over like he claims; the problem is he has to be pushed and reminded over and over or he will just continue the same behavior, just at different levels.

What gets me is most of the people doing the “cancelling” were too young to be online during that time. The internet was a very different place back then. Not saying it was ok, but it was different. Comedy has changed significantly. I’m also a firm believer in forgiveness and that people can change their views. People love to condemn others these days.

tbh, he did grow out of that gross habit and I do think he completely disavows his early 20s self. I've been watching him since FOREVER and a lot of videos on his old original channel were deleted. And that was before ANY "canceling", he just woke up and said, "I'm not going to be awful anymore." But one thing that hasn't changed was his victim complex and his "I'm an empath" facade, and him pretending he is poor. And what he did to Tati on his live stream was SUPER disgusting. So I love Ethan and while everything he said was right, I find it disturbing how he rejoices in other people’s failures. Hila and Dan constantly keep him in check, which is pretty cool. Ethan! You have a huge platform and when addressing issues that impact minors, be a little bit more professional. Ethan was not this involved in people’s drama until Trisha came into the picture and now that she has left, he is really keeping up with shading people. Eye rolling and snickering comes off as juvenile. As someone who survived assault as a child, it became a trigger for me. I know it’s s podcast so it’s laid back but there has to be a certain level of composure when addressing grave issues. AB was smart to stay out of it.

i see no correlation between amount of time taken off after being canceled. To how responsible or irresponsible someone is handling it. Everyone is going to react to being canceled differently. I disagree with the notion that it is some how more responsible to take more time off of producing content. The real concern is the behavior, and lack of willingness to change.
12:49 Here's the thing, the content that Shane provided at that certain time may have been because he understood that controversial meant traction and inadvertently subconsciously made that younger audience then feel like it was okay to act on those things in real life because they laughed at it on youtube and that's the bigger issue. I don't believe the intention was to be hurtful but rather trying to come out of a dark place through laughter which seemed then better than the alternative. I feel like there are so many aspects to this cancellation thing... for me the hard part is how I like some people and feel way more understanding towards them than others...Trisha for my taste could be cancelled away from the internet for good... also I think it wouldn't matter to me if they cancelled Ryland...
